I think the real neat thing is how WE THE VIEWER are also used in the episode. Think about it. The angels only move when no one is looking at them, but there are scenes where they're still even tho no one is watching them. Because WE'RE watching them. This is especially noticeable in that one scene in the house with the three angels. We see two of them behind her, face covered, but then, she passes between them and the camera and when we see them again they've uncovered their faces. They moved because WE COULDN'T SEE THEM. WE, the audience, kept them frozen in place. But when Sally kept US from seeing them they moved.
@@awesome3995 they ruined the weeping angels in that episode. the limited budget they had this episode forced them to be creative and simple. and they produced one of the most terrifying beings in all of dr who. then the next episode happened and they arent that scary anymore due to us being able to see them move them talk and other things I might have missed. been a while since I watched the episode.

But yes you got it right imo, angels are best simple and i’m not a fan of the increased knowledge we get over them, they’re best as an unknown entity, scary because we understand so little yet they pose a great threat.
The best part about this episode is that most of the time, the angels are not statues. They're people in makeup, and they got so good at holding still that people were offering refreshments to the actual statues.
the actors were ballerinas, used to holding still in uncomfortable positions, they were also given bicycle seats fit to the floor to sit on yet still stand perfectly still!
The Weeping Angels (and the Vashta Nerada) are the BEST New Who creature additions IMO! (Mostly because they have an amazing "psychological terror" aspect to them,) I'd even say they rank up there with the Daleks from Old Who! My favorite thing about this ep (my second favorite Doctor who episode ever) is when you realize there are moments where no one onscreen is looking at an Angel, but they’re frozen anyway…and then you realize that the Angel’s freeze when ANY living thing looks at them. After I saw this episode when it first aired (I was seven), my dad thought it would be funny to move around the garden ornaments and statues, including a full life-sized statue of a child that was nearly as tall as I was. He placed that one right in front of the back door.
I anticipate lots of head shakes (nope nope) with purched lips, a couple of “they are about to get snatched!!” And at least one “I’m out of there. Gone. Not me!!” Also a new fear unlocked.

The genius of of the way it was filmed is that you never saw them move. To me Carey Mulligan will always be known as Sally Sparrow. Yet another actor who made an early appearance in Who.
Moffat said in an interview the inspiration for this episode came from an angel statue he once saw in a cemetery, only for it to be gone the next time he walked the same path. When he asked about the statue, no one could find any records it ever existed.

For a show that's "about time travel" I think a lot of it is very light on the actual dealing with the mechanics of time travel side of things (cause, y'know, writing good time travel stories is hard), normally the fact that the TARDIS can time travel is just a vehicle to get you from one setting to the next. Which is what makes me appreciate the episodes that do play with time even more, like Blink, or Under the Lake/Before the Flood, or A Christmas Carol (both from much later seasons), because they have such a different feel to them from most episodes of Who.
The angles are such a great concept, makes you look twice at statues after watching ahaha. I feel like they could have their own horror movie outside of doctor who

This is one of the most popular episodes in Modern Who. The only problem with this episode is that it's so overhyped that whenever a reactor starts to get close to it, people start mentioning it and how great it is. It was great to see you go in with no hype and really enjoy it. As I mentioned before, the 2nd half of this season is a really strong run of episodes. Enjoy.

While there are many reasons to love this episode, one I rarely see people talk about is how great the music is. The use of bassoon (one of life's underrated instruments) is perfect. One moment it's rather eerie, the next it's incredibly emotional (see the scene with Billy in the hospital).
Location report: the police station is actually the former National Westminster Bank on West Bute Street in Butetown in Cardiff Bay - which was the next street to where I used to live. The statues at the end are scattered through out Cardiff.
You have no idea man, for years after this episode people wanted Sally to come back as a full-on companion, or just to return in general. The early discussion boards etc. dedicated to Doctor Who at the time were filled with people begging and pleading lol Overall, probably Moffat's best episode to this day. He's had some real bangers over the years, but this one is still considered his best of the bunch. Plus, Carey Mulligan is just so great in the role of Sally, smart, brave, willing to take a risk in the end and wants to help as well. Basically, the Doctor or a companion of the Doctor. The best of humanity as the Doctor might say. The other characters are all good also, and well wwritten, even the bit parts like Sally's friend who gets sent back in time first.
This is one of my favorite episodes too! If I'm introducing someone to Doctor Who, this is the episode I will have them watch first. Many times they actually have actors in costumes of the angels. They used bicycle seats underneath the costumes to keep them comfortable and still.

So, I like this episode because it gives the feeling of a little open timeloop. I think that Sally after dealing with the angels herself, leaves the angels there, and the place is a police parking lot, so obviously someone got there later and took the angels away making them awake again, which possibly is why the Doctor appears one year later to deal with with them but get send back, and the cicle begins again. I know that the Doctor possibly dealt with the angels after he got the Tardis back, but then the reason as to why he gets sent back kinda dissapears, at least in the context of the episode. So having the angels be around after Sally until the Doctor returns one year later feels more right.

The fact that the Angels only move when even WE , the audience, can't see them just adds an extra layer of fear to the monster. What's more is, keep in mind, the Weeping Angels are among the few creatures to BEAT The Doctor. It was dumb luck that he wasn't sent farther back in time and that he had the tech to relay to someone how dangerous they are and the threat they could pose if they got inside the Tardis. There is a reason this, alongside Midnight, is considered the gold standard for Doctor Who episodes to this day.
the day this episode came out i was a teenager and we went shopping after in leiden in the netherlands and was sight seeing at all the old churches and stuff. i was giggeling nervous all day watching all the statues.

Even if you can’t ”blink” … you kinda could close one eye, open it, close the other without losing eye contact … but here’s me overthinking :D
Thanks for the suggestion, Amelia.
Great reaction! This is my favourite episode you have reacted to so far, and one of my favourite 5 episodes.
I was looking forward to you reacting to this episode. Just knew you would love it! Don’t blink!
Wonderful reaction video. This is one of my favorite episodes, so I was really looking forward to watching you react to it. You did not disappoint! Remember! Don’t Blink!
It's actually people in Angel costumes. Not just cgi. It's quintessential Doctor Who
This was on my explore feed, subbed instantly💪
the edited-in "O.O" i love itt lmao
Definitely one of the great "watching from behind the sofa" episodes.
I used to have "The angels have the phonebox" on a shirt too :)
I love the noise Ugo makes when he sees a weeping angel lol 😂
Yup. The 'budget' episode is one of the best. Very little Doctor and Martha. We never see the angels move. 😂 Awesome
Why does Carey Mulligan look like Carey Mulligan, now that's the question!
It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it. =:o}
If only more people looked like Carey Mulligan...
@@reverance_pavane if there were more people that looked like Carey Mulligan, they could organize into Mulligangs!
@@reverance_pavane That could get very confusing. We'd have to start calling them all Bruce! =:o}
Not every statue but potentially any statue.
the day this episode came out i was a teenager and we went shopping after in leiden in the netherlands and was sight seeing at all the old churches and stuff. i was giggeling nervous all day watching all the statues.
Brilliant episode and great you loved it. Wibbley Wobbley Timey Wimey ❤
One thing you get from nuwho, is a list of things that you become wary/anxious or terrified by, that may have just been a normal thing before you watched Doctor who.😂💙
When people ask me if they'd like Dr. Who, this is the episode I send them to. It stands alone. It's not like the others, but it beautifully represents the others.
A great episode ...Love watching your reactions. You are getting close to the end of season 3... so make sure you do not start Torchwood season 2 until after Doctor Who season 3 finale. Also, make sure to watch the Children in Need short "Time Crash" after DW season 3 as well, but before you start the Christmas special just before Season 4 starts.... Are you confused yet?! LOL
This is one of my favorites!
