For some UK context of what Joy said, the leaders of our country who imposed the lockdown rules got caught breaking them on numerous occasions by having a load of parties. The PM at the time lied to parliament a number of times, first saying there were no parties, then saying there were but he didn't know about them, then he did know but wasn't at them, then saying he did go when photos got leaked. He got fined by the police banned from parliament for 90 days (triggering a by election) but quit before the ban came in and resigned as PM months before that, leading to Liz Truss being prime minister for about 3 and a half minutes and crashing the economy. That's what she meant by "those people having parties" and why there was so much anger, rather than just sadness.
Fun fact: the 2 guys on mount Everest was the first to reach the summit in 1953. One of the actors is the actual great-grand nephew of the real life mountaineer! They cast him without knowing.
For those who didn't realise, when Joy talks about following "The Rules", she's VERY MUCH referring to Covid and the restrictions put in place during the pandemic. The rant Joy goes on (which isn't in this cut-down reaction) is specifically about how the British government at the time put all sorts of rules into place to try and stop the spread of Covid... only they themselves didn't bother to follow them, throwing actual parties and doing all sorts of really quite shameful behaviour. All while ordinary people suffered under lockdown, doing what we were told to do and even having to say goodbye to loved ones remotely - just like Joy describes here. A lot of people were in much the same situation as her, so her anger is extremely relatable to many. I'm incredibly lucky not to have lost anyone during that time, but even so, hearing Joy go off about parties... I knew EXACTLY what she meant, and it hit HARD.
Fun fact, Joy's mum was staying at the Royal Hope Hospital, the same hospital Martha used to work for. Happy New Year, it's good to be back watching your reactions.
@gestaltdude true. But I'm sure the US had the same thing of not visiting people in hospitals at the height of the pandemic. It's been almost 5 years. People start to forget already. It's fair that he thought it's a crazy mysterious Whoniverse rule. It's just interesting to see how fast that goes
@@stephjovi That could be a defensive mechanism. A lot of people were traumatised by what happened, and for some the only way to deal with it is to repress the memory. Not suggest this is the case with Ugo, but the reality is it did affect people in different ways. Personally I didn't have much of a problem. True, where I live we had only 1000 cases in 18 months, and our lock downs, of which there were three, last maybe five weeks combined. Plus I never leave the house unless I have to (allergy to light), so being given an excuse to shun the rest of society was a blessing. :P My immediate family were even joking that, through having to live with the restrictions of the allergy, we had in fact been in training for such an event for years before it happened. :D
I forgot that this is your first Moffat Christmas Special!! He's written my favorite Christmas Specials, so it's fun that you get a feel for what he brings to Christmas.
It all comes full circle. The first vid I seen of yours was ncutis first Xmas ep. Instantly fell in love with your chanel and am still eagerly awaiting every upload
seeing you get back to ncuti somehow feels really great (somehow because I'm still sceptic as always when a new doctor takes over, but I love your reactions and this just feels right for some reason)
@FROSTIIFYY your opinion. Personally he is one of my favs and I think his proformance as the doctor is perfect. It's fine you don't like him cause again its your opinion but posting negativity on a positive post about my personal enjoyment is interesting behaviour and mabey you should look at yourself more instead of criticising others for no reason.

really waiting for the continued reactions to the rest of new who, there's still SO much good stuff coming and it's been great rewatching this through you.
I've said it elsewhere and I'll say it again, I love this TARDIS design, like it would be good to see a chair in the main room but I love how clean and futuristic it looks, it's my second favourite in the shows history
Location report - The Sandringham Hotel in London is actually the Sandringham Hotel in Cardiff, St Mary's Street (which is next door to the now closed The Main Stage, a local gay bar). The hotel in Manchester in the 1940s is Cardiff University in Cathays Park in Cardiff.
I like Joy, but Anita was the true highlight of the episode. I hope we see more of her in the future.. and Trev, bring back Trev somehow! Joel Fry is just too cute!
While i'm waiting to watch your reaction, i wanted to ask you if you'll consider watching "Good Omens" , you already like David Tennant (he's amazing in it, as usual) and the series is only two season long. i assure you the fan base of "Good Omens" is as passionate as that of Doctor Who.
Christmas special is always a bit one off , I liked this one Stephen Moffat came up with an interesting plot and a good cast made it work well . The Doctor spending a year with Anita , living a normal life and making a friend was touching . Joys not being able to be with her mum whilst Downing street ignored it's own covid rules reflected many people's anger , hurt and regret . The star being intended as a weapon , Trev coming through for the Doctor and eventually through Joy the star becoming a beacon of hope . A tearjerking end , Ncuti carried it well and I really enjoyed this one . Nicely summed up by Ugo as always .
This is a very Moffat-esque Christmas special (not his best but his specials tend to be more sentimental and focused on the theme of Christmas than RTD who tends to do “Monster of the Week” but at Christmas) I personally prefer the latter because I’m not a big Christmas person but a lot of people love the Moffat specials because of how Christmassy they are
Yeah it's not Moffat's best christmas episode, but it's not his worst either. The worst imo is The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe. But even that episode has some moments of brilliance.
I can't remember or find the exact words but I loved when Moffat was asked if he'd return to Doctor Who now that RTD is back. And he said no he won't but he moves Doctor Who something always goes BOOM and it brings JOY TO THE WORLD 😅😅. Before the episode titles were known
Was anyone else left wanting more information as to which mum Ruby was talking too? Please forgive the appalling sentence structure. Fun fact, the actor who played the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay was actually the great-great nephew of the man himself, though this was apparently not known at the time of casting. How surreal it must have been for this man to play a member of his own family. :D And yes, that is a door to a hobbit hole you saw, perhaps in an attempt to lure Peter Jackson to do an episode. He has state he would love to do one, but apparently the BBC is unwilling to meet his fee; Jackson cares nothing for money, he just wants a Dalek as payment. Joel Fry, who played Trev, sound so much like fellow Who actor David Walliams I had o double check to make sure there wasn't some mix up with the casting notes.
You’re not the first reactor I’ve watched who didn’t understand that Joy was talking about the Covid rules. Has everyone just completely blanked out 2020? Or was the UK the only country to do lockdowns? 😂
the "rules" quarantine. covid. dont think ive seen any other show comment on how we couldnt visit loved ones on their death bed during covid. not really a social issue i can side with since i lived the covid lifestyle 5 years before it even happened. and i dont think i will visit either parent on their death bed. i dont see the point. just like wakes and funerals. we live, we die. it is what it is.
Overall, this was pretty good, but I found the ending problematic. I liked the stuff with Anita, and Ncuti has great energy. I felt sorry for Joy and not sure if her sacrifice was entirely her choice. It kind of felt like because she was having a tough time that it was okay to kill her off. Would be great to see Anita again sometime.
This episode to me highlights the only problem I have with Ncuti's doctor and it's that a lot of his actions and dialogue is something Tennant's doctor would do. It just feels like they made Ncuti into Tennant V2 rather than Ncuti being his own Doctor.
Welllll Tennant closes his emotions off and he losts more than Ncuti. And reminder Ncuti is the latest Doctor. All those deaths from his 14 previous lives are all in at his face.
Дружище, продолжай смотреть перезапуск Доктора (2005-2017). И наслаждаться. А печальное зрелище новейшей эпохи - оставь на темный день.
