Bought this many years ago. Only started really playing last year. Took me completely by surprise how good it is. I've been a gamer since the 90's. It's rare a game can totally overtake my time like this one did. Ship hunting is now my fave way to play. Such incredible variety. Going to a whole new galaxy blew my sox off. If hello games did put out dlc i'd gladly pay for it.

Luckily for you, every singular content update has been and is expected to continue being free. Every 3 or so months they release a large content drop for absolutely free. It's why everyone who plays it now always recommends it to anyone who is curious enough but not confident in taking the step to try it.

No mans sky is very much about owning all the things, owning mutiple multitools, owning multiple starships, owning a base, owning a freighter which is just a base that can warp, owning a fleet of frigates to do missions for you, and even owning a township that passively generates money for you. As far as crafting survival games I feel like it has the biggest sense of power fantasy when you near the end game.

it's also a game about enlightenment, or at least what i think is one of the ways we can look at it. the devs clearly know what they want, which is to give the players as much of a fun gaming experience as they have the time to play. they just want to build the game.
because it doesn't matter how ever much you own, at the end of the game main story line, you'll always be asked this simple question: keep playing the same universe, or let everything go and start anew?
no man's sky own development story has been something of a redemption story. it took on an entirely new identity when the devs said, enough was enough, it was never about the money. now that we have it, what do we really want to do? and then they started really working on making the game they promised. there was a very a turning point, even if from the outside view, it looked like they were doing fuck-all. it was complete silence. they didn't communicate with game journalists or publishers or anyone still talking about it. and they delivered. they didn't have to talk, because having suffered the consequences of releasing a game before it was finished, there was but one thing to do, and it just so happened to be what they loved doing the most: make the damn game.
and so they did. and they still keep doing that, even now.
i think you brought up a dang good point. no man's sky is very much about owning all the things, and i'd add that it's also very much about realizing that no matter how many things you own, in the end you can't really own everything. it's a procedurally generated universe out there, and boy do i need you to tell me about how vast it is. the definition of having an infinity to discover and play with is probably this: you can definitely own all the things, but never ALL of the things that there are. chasing that ultimate power fantasy can be very enjoyable, and they let you do that, because it will eventually lead you to the epiphany that it's a never ending sort of experience if you simply wish for it to be. oh and they're still continuing to develop the game and adding to it every time they get the chance.
talking about the story line, that one question at the end is also giving you a real choice. it's letting you decide whether there are yet still many interesting things for you to see and do in this universe, and you'd rather stay and keep doing this, or if you're ready to start fresh, and do it all over again, but with a brand new beginning. and you know it's okay whichever option you do pick, because you know it's your choice, and you'll end up having tons of fun either way.
man i love games that people created with love. i love playing them and i love talking about them. they're so inspiring and urge me to do the same.
no man's sky is really a gift that keeps on giving. friggin' love this game, man.

I got it right after they added the base construction. And while there are still lingering bugs, it is the type of game you can just take your time through and just explore stuff. It is possible to get to a point where you have done pretty much everything at that point. In which case, you wait until the next Expedition and start over, which isn't a bad thing.

They were ambitious and sadly the game and the hype around it was bigger than what they could manage. But the fact that they stayed with it and managed to turn this into a success story is unbeliveable. Congrats to them. Barely any company stays with their failed projects, but it is even rarer to turn it into a success story. They outdid themselves and I just hope they learned how to do the marketing for their new project if they ever have one

Just shame that they made it into something completely different than originally planned. The art direction suffered greatly. While the visuals are really well done, they are bland and lacking the personality it used to have and was hyped around. Colors are so desaturated it is almost insane to think it still holds the same name despite looking nothing like it used to.
It is great they put out the updates though don't get me wrong, though it does not focus on the Universe and generation algorithm which was the sole purpose of the PR for the game back then.

The other week I was completing a Sentinel mission where I had to defeat 2 Sentinel Walkers on my Steam Deck. I had the sound on, but as I was in the middle of the last wave, I didn't have time to turn the sound down. A fellow member of staff came running over, hearing the Sentinel Walker stomping and having a temper tantrum outside my base, wondering what I was playing. It still lacks meta-game. They have added so many things to do, but not WHY to do. Get space rich, get best gear - cool stuff but what to do with it? It needs some reason to use all these. Examples: Faction conflict where you can impact/join to turn the tides. Some colonization/base building/outpost incentive, could help grow your empire or help faction. Could boost reasons to trade and related piracy/defence options. etc.

    • @TowerWatchTV

      That's right.
Well the funny thing is, the "Why" do it reason was always the exploration and mystery. Always seeing something new, never before discovered thanks to the algorithm, but that never came to be. Planets are highly restricted with their generation, meaning the variety is quite predictable no matter how many are explored, there is a pattern that is painfully obvious even though the vanilla was more varied despite not even being the promised game either. It baffles me how they left the original idea behind so easily instead of like doubling down and bringing it to light. for literally 7 years people blindly praise these updates as if HG did a comeback, meanwhile they are working on a whole different game now.
Long story short - NMS Pre-Release wins over any current updates of NMS in 2023, just look at those juicy screenshots and vids out there you will know.

No, meta play styles has ruined games these days, that’s why world of Warcraft became what it is today because there has to be some meta play style that everyone has to min/max and only play a specific type of way to get the best results possible it bottlenecks creativity and imagination and just turns into a game of who has more autism

I started playing in April or May and have played nearly every day since. The one thing that I desperately wish they would overhaul is Build Mode. Love building but I don't glitch build, which limits what I can create. More limiting is the fact that things that should snap frequently don't for whatever reason. Lots of items can't be color edited. Makes building insanely frustrating at times. Otherwise, I love the game. It's a crazy time eater and I'm retired so that's a good thing.

Some people claim that if you upload your base to the HG servers, in your build computer menu, then the land does not regrow, but i've never tried it, as I don't build underground.

Fun to see the images, I have every setting on lowest, so that's how I know the game. And I probably wouldn't go as far as buying a gaming PC just for NMS, but admittedly, I am a little bit jealous now, of players who can play with everything cranked up to the max ;-)
I Started playing a couple of weeks ago, by the way, so I did not really experience the whole development, and have not done and seen about half of what is shown here. I was a bit overwhelmed though, by the sheer amount of stuff that there is to do. What I like about the premise of NMS is that the game very much does not try to keep you small. Somehow it feels really satisfying to walk through my self built base overlooking a settlement in the distance, with the silhouette of my freighter and frigate fleet way up in the sky. (Lots of crashes though, but again, most of that probably has more do do with my own lightweight system than with NMS itself. I mean, you CAN run it with 8 GB and integrated graphics card, but then don't whine when it doesn't run as good, and won't look nearly as good as in this video)

I have around 4000 hrs across multiple saves on Xbox1 unfortunately it's starting to struggle, So I brought it on PC and have around 500 hrs so far, again on multiple saves, I was 30+ galaxies on Xbox, I get to do it fresh all over again, this time with my wife, daughter and grandchildren.

I thought full-coop multi-player was not in the game ? From the hour or two of multi-player things I've tried to research, there is no full coop. You have individual saves and you can join up at some points. No shared inventories, research, etc.
It's not really full coop like raft for exemple.

I have put 1000 hrs already, nowadays I just join to complete expeditions, I have to find a cooler staff and also find a better location to establish and do my colony proper. Only regret it feels lonelier as a survival gamer, also have manually traveled with my freighter to an unpopular galaxy (elkupalos), I use my freighter exclusively now and I also have bases on some galaxies near to portals to be able to visit locations and collect cool stuff. Oh I also have to decorate my freighter base...

Hello Games team regretted their decision (more like Sony's _brutal_ decision, if you guys knew the story) of releasing a game that was basically still on its alpha/beta test because of some unfortunate circumstances, and decided that, "Hey, y'know what? How about giving our disappointed customers some love by _giving them everything they've asked and more, without charging them more money?"_
    And the rest is history.

They announce expeditions well in advance, and they typically last for 6 weeks, so if you miss one, it's not HGs' fault.

@@wolfen210959 That's fine, not playing that often anyway.
Just saying I would play more if the seasons ran on a overlap.
I tend to skip reinstalling NMS because it's normally the "wrong" time when I want to play it.

I've been playing it again over the past week and it still doesn't have anything to make me want to stay. Most planets are nothing special to look at, they all have the same bases\buildings and the little objects for you to discover and open. The main purpose of the game is to work to gain new objects so you can do more of the same pointless planet discoveries. It's like Farming Simulator where the only purpose is to gain more and better farming equipment so you can do more farming, rinse and repeat.

this seems like a whole new game but... are any of these systems deep enough to actually be fun? Or is it a bunch of shallow half-baked mechanics that offer a little variety but then it all becomes incredibly repetitive?

Um NMS was a scam at launch and took 6 years to even come close to completion. It still isn't complete btw. Atleast Starfield was not broken, it's just boring. And modding will do wonders for the game.

Ive been playing destiny since launch back in 2014 cant even think how much i spent on that game and how much time i put into it but since im paying so much and have already payed so much at this point in time i feel like they are trying to milk moneybout of us, but as for no mans sky i only started playing it like 2 weeks ago and already have well over 100+ hours on the game and im loving it i love the grind and tbh i think i rushed alot of things so i have soo many missions 😅 but im happy i found this game now instead of just passing it by, kinda sucks tho idk if its my console or if its my internet cant handle so many things happening at once but my game gets a lil laggy at times and sometimes crashes but its really good that the game automatically saves during some of my missions but what im tryna say for someone whobis a hardcore fps gamer i really enjoy this game soo much😁

I feel like I need to give this game a real go. I never get past the first hour or so because it just doesn't seem that interesting. But everything displayed looks WAY more interesting than the first bits. Must just be one fo those games you need to play for a few hours before it gets good. Usually I despise that, but I played and loved Death Stranding so... Ya I need to got for it.

Might be worth jumping in during an expedition, then. I had that same problem when I got the game, and then coincidentally an expedition started later that week. Starting over with the somewhat more goal/task oriented gameplay of an expedition got me past that first hump, plus the expeditions tend to bypass the long drawn-out tutorial questline (which you can also disable in a Custom difficulty game).

I love the game so much, but it always ends for me a bit too fast when I come back to it. I think it's mostly because of the fact that money becomes irrelevant too fast and you upgrade all your weapon, ship and mods too fast as well. If they will introduce players economy in this game, along with maybe arpg loot modifiers on gear you can drop / craft and then sell to other players it would be a perfect game.

Fortunately, HG have no intention of adding such a feature, an Auction house added to any game is a complete and utter disaster, Diablo 3 anyone? Why would anyone buy anything from another player, when they can go and get it themselves within a few minutes, ludicrous idea. If you want to play a game that has an auction house for players, try World of Warcraft, you'll have to buy the game and pay extra for each and every expansion, then pay a monthly fee, but at the end of all that you'll get a game with an auction house, where con men try to convince foolish players to "buy this now only $3,000", "step right this way to purchase our fake money, using your real money", yeah, no thanks.
