I think we should also really start blaming the bosses (greedy assholes who own the companies) of game developers. There's no way that people who worked day to day on a game don't care about it and it's players.
One time while playing No Man's Sky, I was exploring a system approximately 50 thousand LY away from my home system. I found a kid who just started playing and was absolutely loving it, we spent the entire day just exploring the planets in that system, by the end of the day, he was rich with units and had a really cool exotic ship. He and I are still friends to this day, and we still play No Man's Sky together. It's a great game when it comes to teamwork, it's an amazing experience and it's not a cash grab. No Man's Sky's currency system depends on how long you play and how you play. There are 3 currency types, that being Units, Nanites, and Quicksilver. Units and Nanites are relatively easy to get but Quicksilver has a bit of a catch. Quicksilver is obtained by completing missions at the Nexus which is at the Space Anomaly. The Space Anomaly is the Hub for Travelers, Travelers are what you and every other player are. No Man's Sky is a very underrated game but I guarantee in the next 3 updates or so, it will have hundreds of game companies falling below and it will be getting loads of attention. I'm a Derelict Explorer in No Man's Sky which basically means I explore Derelict Freighters. Derelict Freighters are Freighters that had "Biological accidents" which caused dangerous biological entities on the ship to escape and infest the entirety of the ship. Derelict Freighters are jackpots for Travelers looking for stuff to sell, there's a crate full of loot around every corner, you just have to be careful not to awaken the infestation. Going through a Derelict Freighter can be really unsettling and scary at times, it reminds me of Dead Space, which is exactly why I made my traveler look like Isaac Clarke.
ive only every seen 1 video of this game all the way back on release this is the 1st time ive really looked at the game since then and it just looks so stunning with so much content and i totally gotta try it
I keep trying to get my bro into the game but he's kinda impatient when it comes to gaming most times, like trying to get him thru the beginning parts went kinda, eh I guess. Maybe I can try again one of these days. Lonely Traveler or not, I love the game, wish I played it more
"some people will forever look at the devs as liars and con artists" The difference is intent. NMS did commit to their mistakes but I, personally, never got the feeling of ill intent. It just felt like "idiots that bit off more than they could chew". Empty promises. A dream. (looking at you, Star Citizen) They have redeemed themselves over and over and over by now. They overcame their BS and metaphorically transcended into what they are now: extremely committed developers with the best possible outlook. "What is better? To be born good or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?" I think everyone deserves the chance to truly redeem themselves through hard and honest work.
@@motorcycle-man i played star citizen during the free fly week and couldnt believe how buggy and unfinished this game is after so many years. no mans sky did so much more than CIG in less time and probably a smaller team in my opinion
NMS made like what? 400-600mil? If all that went into development I would expected more gameplay aside from base building and basic trading functionality after 10+(?) years of development. The game is in a good place and made its own niche (little bit like minecraft in space) between the played Space giants such as Elite(even though it’s in a rough state), Star Citizen and upcoming StarField. still feels like they could have done more variety of gameplay experiences. P.s. From research I did, NMS features so far comes down to Base building and trading with some combat too, but if I missed more gameplay loops the player actively participates in - do tell me.
@d R I've read several reports that the dude is like this extreme perfectionist type dude over every tiny little detail. Dude is probably a nightmare to work for lol.
Key thing you mention: the developers took that money and dumped it right back into development. Whenever I'm a little underwhelmed by a change they make to it, I remind myself that the ONLY money I've ever spent on this game was the original purchase price back in 2016. None of the NMS DLC has been paid DLC. That in itself sets Hello Games apart and it's something other developers could really learn from.
Paradox interactive could learn alot then considering they have almost 30 dlc's now i know its over 27 but not sure is it exactly at 30 mark yet, they keep releasing more dlc's,i saw back in 2020 not sure was it a bug but the freaking utopia cost 300$,but now its 30$ for that specific dlc.idk was it a bug or something, but one thing's for sure they got alot of hate for overpricing the dlc's and only putting fun stuf into those, base game feels lifeless and you can't even mod it sinse 90% of mods require you to own a dlc to function.
Uhm Fromsoftware is the only one I know which hates microtransactions sure it ask some money for dlc's but if you just wait a few months you'll get it free eventually
@@theicyphoenix_7745 while I'm not sure I fully understood everything in your comment (it's a little all over the place, no offence) I agree that paradox are greedy bastards Any game they publish is given tiny updates but endless amounts of dlc. Cities skylines is almost unplayable without dlc, it is like an entirely different game, the dlc completely transforms it into a Sequal with hundreds of more systems to play around with but the issue is the dlc costs over 150 euro or some crap like that, even tiny dlc like green cities is more than 12 euro and all it does is add some building models and cars
I played in VR just for less than a hour, I have to say that going into a spaceship, take off, cruise the space and land in another planet, in VR, was one of the coolest things I've done playing video games
Just bought the game a week ago and Im addicted. Im still trying to comprehend how vast the open space is. Hello Games did more than we could ask for. They have my eternal respect
The game is supposed to be the size of a litteral universe, housing around 18 quintillion planets, with each planet taking a good while in and of themselves to explore with a good starship. It is incredibly vast
Played it when it first came out. Definitely left a lot to be desired, but if you looked you could see the potential. Coming back to it after 7 years is mind blowing. Just amazing, and they are still providing updates.
A lot of people didn't get told the story about how over Christmas everything they had was destroyed in a flooding of their office. and they were able to salvage what they released. they were trying to push back the release to add more to the game before release but playstation basically told them to release regardless. so yes. shit launch. but they have fixed a lot and have brought back their vision, and that dedication to the player is something that needs to be repeated by others.
None of which justifies the fact that blatant lies were told about WHAT WAS ACTUALLY IN THE GAME. People like you are basically evangelists for ponzi schemes. If companies lie about stuff and prosper then guess what companies will keep deceiving people. Did you ever consider all the game developers who didn't lie about stuff, didn't raise the capital, and never got anywhere even if they had a great product while Hello Games repeatedly said THINGS WERE NOT TRUE ON MULTIPLE OCCASSIONS and a ton of money. I don't even blame them for that, I blame people like you that encourage scumbag strategies like this.
Damn that's sad. I didn't even know that. It was being called no man's lie for awhile but it looks like they were very dedicated towards this game. I honestly thought this game wasn't gonna be salvagable/ fixed back then. Thought it was gonna be a anthem situation before anthem was even released
games like these are stored on multiple servers and online depots, you can destroy your entire studio multiple times over and still rebuild from source because the source is stored online. Getting setup however sounds like a nightmare after a flood
@@shimlaDnB Hello Games was not a big AAA studio at that time (I dont think they even are rn) iirc, so they likely did not have any extra backup in case something like that were to happen
I bought it at launch, knowing that it wasn’t worth the hype around it, but I liked the concept. It’s a game I return to every now and then, 6 years later. The soundtrack has become one of my favorite albums, even when I’m not playing the game. The community of this game has to be one the nicest there is, just taking a look at the NMS subreddit is a breath of fresh air. People there seem to just enjoy themselves and that’s what gaming should be about.
Oof, don't be too proud of it yet, once people know the game is getting better now, you'll know it'll attract "bandwagon" players, and you know how toxic it'll be, cuz well... It happened to these 2 games that I played for 8 years, the game still good, it's just the community kinda crumbling
Im completely agree with you sir, well kinda disapointed at first launch, but they choose to not abandoned the game gave me hope, and now this game become one of my fav space explorer game.
The game has a soundtrack? "People there seem to just enjoy themselves and that’s what gaming should be about." Every gaming subreddit is like that though.
Just picked the game up last week for the first time ever and wow I’m impressed. I love it, see myself playing it for long in the future and I just want to say thank you to everyone who stuck with it to make it the masterpiece I’ve discovered today
I remember the original disappointment that surrounded this game upon it's first release. Not too long ago I found that it was released on the Switch and Xbox and so I tried it. I was blown away.
@@rafaelmotta5480 simple answer, yes. Thoroughly entertaining to play solo. Plenty of missions and stour to do and just general like farming, upgrading base building etc… but it also would be fun with friends. I’ve only ever played it solo and love it for the exploration and complexity, so I’d say give it a shot!
I held onto my PS4 copy in good faith that the developers had good intentions and I wanted it to be good because I've always loved the idea. Moving on 6 years later and I've now given both my PS4 and No Man's Sky game to my best friend who wanted to start playing games (she's 40 years old and never owned a game console in her life). I jump on my PC version of the game and we explore the universe together every weekend. We both absolutely adore this game to it's core.
I sold my copy. I was not that angry about the game but I was so hyped I preordered it and felt personally embarrassed. I feel kinda dumb for not hanging on to it, I never sell games but needed the money to buy Red Dead 2. I should buy it again cuz it looks so cool now.
honestly this showed what makes a good game. The devs listened to their fans and fixed all the bad things together with tons of improvments. No "it's good in the long run", no grab and run. Straight honestly and actual actions instead of empty words
I mean, that's wrong because that's LITERALLY what happened. It took them a while to actually do what you are saying. If what you said was true, then they would have released the game they promised, instead of going about everything the way they did.
Tell that to rockstargames do they ever listen to their loyal fanbase? They all care is screaming kids and sharkcards Do they ever remove or fix glitches, god mode bs, modders no they just want your hard earned moolah Imagine releasing a 10 year old game on 3 different consoles funny right ? Im not joking
@@Funhaus_Ryan That's a bit of an ignorant statement. Hello games was a small, very small studio with only like 25 full time employees. They had no person responsible for sales or marketing which is why Sean did it all himself. Related to this is also why they needed money. They signed a publishing deal with Sony, who then pushed them to release the game in an unfinished state. I fully recommend you watch the video from the internet historian on No Man's Sky. He covered it excellently.
It got good in the long run because they fucking committed to fixing the flaws as best they could. I honestly want to know how the devs feel now? Going from probably being a little depressed with the shit they were getting, to now, where people love them for what they've managed to achieve.
I remember doing a quest that led to a broken ship, at this point I still had the beginner ship so when I saw the ship I knew I had to have it. With whatever I had on me at the time, I made it air worthy, even with most of its systems broken I got that thing in the air and rode all the way back to my base with my friend. This was possibly one of the coolest moments I had in a video game where I felt like I carving out my own story as a space traveler
Trying to get a couple of my friends back into it who had it when it released and haven't went back because of how it released. I've played it over the years and really love how they've turned it around. Thank you for the video. I shared it with them to hopefully improve their attitude towards it.
I feel the same way. After like 7 days straight of getting on as soon as I got home from work, I would be at work and I would start thinking about it as though I was actually going to a physical place, not going home to play vr. Real wild.
@@HAmzakhan2 Quest 2 VR with AirLink (you'll need a fast router with clear line of sight) and a beefy desktop PC (I use >= 8 cores and GeForce 3070 GPU)
It's nice to see how far the game has progressed. It would've been received better in the beginning had they not over promised. I'm enjoying the game nowadays.
The video Internet Historian did really explains why they got the beating they did. And how it didn't phase them, and they chose to finish what they started.
They could have handled the release a little better by saying which stuff was NOT going to be in the game at launch. But within one year from release most of the stuff found it’s way into the game.
The absolute devotion to keep pushing and not give up on it is commendable. Even when people were saying “this doesn’t make up for it” they kept working and shelling out FREE updates. There are 20 FREE major updates this game put out. They are LEGENDS
This game reminds me of a journey through life. Falling over well trying to walk, tripping over well running, not slowing down in time and ploughing your bike into a fence as a kid. But you get back up, you try again, you keep going and eventually you succeed. What people love about no mans sky is the human factor, we don't always get it right first time. But you can try again, not give up and keep moving forward. And ignore what people say about you, because it doesn't matter to them, it matters to you.
I was a day 1 player and I'll say Hello Games DEFINITELY redeemed themselves! I would most def support their next game because it's clear what they are capable of AND the long time support and love they've put into it. This is a company that listens and truly cares what the fans think and want. They care about their reputation. Everyone makes mistakes, but not many people clean up the mess they made.
@@geoffok You are absolutely right. They straight out lied about what was in the game and then it took them years to polish the game yet these people still praise them.
@@ronelz999 its almost like people are happy that a studio is actually fucking willing to fix their mistakes they did bad things but somehow they should never be at all praised for fixing their mistake go ahead and believe that but don’t fucking insinuate we are some how mentally deficient for praising a studio for caring enough to deliver what was promised even if it took time
I feel so lucky to have gotten into this game when I did, a few months ago. I got to experience something so much bigger than I ever could have expected, and it is amazing. I could genuinely get lost in these worlds for a long, long time. It’s shocking to see how far it came from the beginning.
I remember being so sad when I found out this game was coming out and I couldn't play it because I didn't have a decent computer. It was everything I love in exploration. Then it came out and it was terrible and I was glad I didn't play it. Now it's 2022 I have a computer that can play it and I'm happily chugging along exploring planets finding ships building bases and learning alien languages. Is it the game I imagined, no, but I couldn't be happier with the comeback story of No Man's Sky. If more companies were doing things like this instead of churning out endless mediocrity and never changing anything we would have a much better gaming community
Same, came back to it after a few years, my pc still couldn't run it well but I was able to get a few days of enjoyment. Looking forward to playing it again once I get a good pc setup
Crazy I’m legit playing NMS and scrolling through YT then I see this. Over 500+ hours. I leave the game sometimes but always find myself coming back every now and then but definitely during a new expedition. Congrats to HelloGames for all the recognition it has deserved for everything they’ve done to the game since launch. Thank you for continuing to add to a game for free.
Wow I was a day-1 buyer. I played the game for a couple of months and really enjoyed it and then uninstalled it and never revisited. I’m seeing a lot of comparisons to star field now which led me to looking up some current gameplay of no man’s sky. The game looks incredible now! Definitely diving back in now
This literally my thought, I installed no mans sky last night after the showcase & so far really like it alot & after seeing everything that was added in this vid makes me even more excited to play
Just be warned; when you dive back in the new content will literally be screaming at you to notice it, if you don't start from scratch - as soon as you load in you'll have planetary settlements shouting at you to become their leader, smugglers declaring their need for your services, etc. It feels like you walk into an outdoor shopping area with all the vendors trying to get you to notice their stuff, and it can be a little off-putting.
Played this game when it came out and I gave up on it. Just downloaded it yesterday and it is a completely different game, this game quickly became one of my favorite games
I just got into the game and it's so immersive I wish I was living in this universe... A good game will do that for you and the dedication that Hello Games put into No Man's Sky is indicative on the passion and the love for it! I'm so glad it's finally the game that it was promised to be!
The progression of No Man's Sky is perhaps one of the most amazing rides I've ever had with a video game. It's been quite the rollercoaster of emotions, happy to have made it.
do you like star citizen? because NMS launched as a husk of a game and over half the features that were promised at launch were drip fed into it over the past 8 years.
What not many seem to talk about with Sean's appearance on late night talk shows is that they weren't publishing the game entirely on their own. Sony Interactive Entertainment helped them with publishing their product and organized the entire off-development public reception of it. Sean never wanted to pretend to play the game on late night, but Sony's suits pushed for it to make pre-purchase sales. So many people hated on Sean directly when he was backed into a corner by a media behemoth he had no chance of swaying. It wasn't entirely his fault. They made a deal with the devil to get the game out and they were manipulated because of that. Then there was the flooding of their offices. In the end, Hello Games are exactly the kind of developer company us gamers look up to, because despite their sacrifices, they still strive for years to make the end product they originally promised. I for one appreciate that immensely.
Yep the hype train and media got way out of control, that doesn't excuse hello games but they were in a rock and a hard place but in the years since they have proved they care about the game and wanted to create something noteworthy and special and that they had respect for not only themselves and their reputations but also the gaming community and players who bought their game
Well they recovered some stuff didn’t the flooding of their office like set them back a year or two game wise? I don’t remember but it definitely ruined the launch product
As a veteran NMS player who has milked the game for pretty much all it's worth I can officially say that from the story to the base building to the space anomaly to the endless discovery to the land combat to the space combat to all of the wierd and wild things to all of the other things you can do to the completely unlimited possibilities, this game was an unbelievable experience from start to finish. The story behind it is as good if not better than the story within it. It just goes to show that perseverance and determination can redeem almost any piece of crap into something that is a breathtaking experience. Sometimes things just need a second chance. Props to you Hello Games, the fact that you took what was already a good game and turned it in to one of the best on the market when you have only a team of about 15 people and when you could've just taken the money and left a mediocre game with so much potential mediocre is an astounding achievement that, at least in my eyes, will always put you up there with the biggest developers and companies.
I got into it late but in a world of let downs, seeing a gaming company stick to the script and produce something so fleshed out after so long.. it's honestly a breath of fresh air
Lul no. It has no voice acting and you have to read text.... Lul god no. Imagine gtao or elder scrolls online with NO voices.... Like come on NMS is crap.

This game has beyond redeemed itself. You truly are exploring a rich, vast and endlessly interesting UNIVERSE along with your fellow man. Finding your first planet that has been heavily colonized into cities is just a WOW moment as a player. Digital manifestations of the human mind, like Minecraft, except WAY more complex, imaginative and fucking FUN. If you haven't played, get on this. Now. xD
No it hasn't, stop proliferating opinions and masking the truth just like $ean did 6 years ago lol. It's basically at where it _should_ have been 6 years ago (minus of course the fresh new visuals which are welcome.) But it's not all about 'graffix.' There's still no proper story, no real ''Adversary Race'' or Final Boss. It's just happy being a 99% pacifist game - and really the Best games need some edge. Even then, the space is so vast, casual gamers just wanting a relaxing time don't need to get involved with a plotline. But what the heck - don't remove the plotline completely??!!!!
I had purchased No Man's Sky only just a few months ago in 2023. However, the game just sat on the shelf because I hadn't done the research and wasn't sure what to expect. Hearing of Starfield releasing this year hyped me up, until I learned it was only for PC and Xbox consoles, and even locked at 30fps for consoles. So I finally just decided to try out No Man's Sky, and I am so impressed with the game. I keep discovering new things to do every-time I enter the game. Fortunately I am entering the game at a time when all the dlc content and updates have occurred, so the game to me is a massive fun exploration. Almost every direction I turn presents opportunities....and I haven't even left my first system yet! The things that I wanted to see in Starfield are not there at all. However, No Man's Sky has these things which include: ability to adopt companions and ride them, manual travel from planet to space, MULTIPLAYER, and probably so much more! I was looking for a Space game to settle on for years to come, and I am pretty enthusiastic that No Man's Sky filling that position. Thanks for the video too! I wanted to see how much work had been done on the game after release and am excited to learn they kept working on the game to make it the incredible experience it is. Time to get back to more exploring, see ya'll in Space.
That little clip of Anthem (3 seconds) was priceless. Thank you Jake, for still showing it as an example not to follow on videogame creation. EA really dropped the ball with it...
Last pre-release I ever bought. Nowadays..idk.. I dont even really game anymore. That one and then cyberpunk.. Man.. Just ruined the whole.. Feeling.. Of what gaming meant growing up🙄😞
Game should’ve been one of the goats. Still furious about it every time I’m reminded. Absolutely ridiculous! Iron man concept with endless possibilities I hope someone picks the concept back up some time
As a game developer, I'll always say that I respect Hello Games more than most studios. Most studios would have folded with a release like that, I've never seen a studio try so hard fix their game. I wish Anthem would have done the same, but you know. EA
I love this game. Seeing it grow into something special has been a lot of fun for a few years. I still play it regularly and it's one of my favourite games ever. Best comeback story in gaming. They still aren't finished with it either. I think it's better than they initially promised and Hello Games fell victim to what they wanted to make versus how much time it would take with the small team they had and the pressure to get the game out. So glad they stuck it out and gave us an all time classic game.
Was there when it launched and stopped playing for the reasons mentioned. My friend told me it had changed vastly since and I am hook and feel that the game now has that something special I wish it did back then. Really happy I came back to the game and especially that the developers didn’t give up on it. Other companies should take note of this journey, looking at you Anthem.
I have been with them since day one, but I know I have had my on and off streaks. They are very inspiring and wish other companies put in as much effort as hello games. Almost 6 years since it’s release and it’s just been improvement after improvement even if it’s little. I can honestly say that even though it was a very rough release they are one my favorite game developers.
As a long term NMS player, I can say they more than delivered on the original promise of the game. All of this content, and no microtransactions or battle passes.
My thoughts exactly. We got it day one, and then put it down after a week. Came back to it a few months ago. The sheer amount of content in this game now, is worth 2 or 3 times more than the original $60. All free updates too.
Been traversing the universe since it’s release! I honestly loved it since day 1 and it just got better and better over time! What a great developer being so dedicated to its fans!
no they f+cking dont... THEY OWE IT TO THE PLAYERS who spent their hard earned money on this boring, shallow, buggy and unfinished game mounted on false and empty promises... they r not doing the players any favours by fixing their shitty game
The absolute CRAZIEST thing to me about this game and really any other out there is the fact that people in the game have created their own ENTIRE communities, home planets, colonizing parties, even fricken LANGUAGES!!!! its mind blowing the actual Empires that people have made, they all have federations and officials and capital buildings and cities and all of the fixings its insane.
I bought No Man's Sky on day one and still actively play it, it's been quite a ride seeing how well the devs have evolved the graphics and mechanics. They didn't take the money and run, but instead forged ahead and turned everything around. Thanks for this documentation of that history, nice job!
I quit playing years ago because having ADHD, if I didnt write down notes on what I was trying to accomplish, I had no idea what was going on when I booted back up. Edit: write > right
The last time I played was when they first added the ability to buy cruisers and I got one and made a base on a pretty nice world. Seeing this vid made me want to re-download to check out the new stuff though. I think I might do so.

My cousin talked me into it and I was hesitant because I was familiar with the drama. But I love it and jump in at least once a week. It’s a very satisfying, soothing, dynamic experience.
I love how they kept their word. No other company has done this like they did and they just really didn't quit until they had it perfect. It's really a work of passion
@@samgoff5289 They followed through. It's not like they lied. He genuinely wanted to complete the game the best he could. If you can't differentiate this from EA, then that's pretty sad. EA has the funds and they purposely deliver an unfinished game to sell more. NMS didn't ask for more. They kept working on it despite the challenges and no more income. Not acknowledging this is a huge reason why companies like EA get away with their bs.
It's an amazing redemption story. What it really brings home though, is how utterly ruthless this industry generally is - we never expect this because we rarely ever experience it. I'm not a huge fan of NMS, for all it's bells and whistles the same fundamental issue I've always had with the gameplay loop remains. But Hello Games (and to a significant extent SOE) do deserve all the praise for their consumer-driven heroism in a business environment that sticks to the Friedman doctrine like glue.
Gamedev is a weird industry. Sometimes, the money to make your game simply doesn't exist until you have a product to sell, because absolutely nobody gives a fuck about your WIP game. But when you have a product to sell, there's suddenly everyone and their mother ready to go, invest now now now buy buy buy. It effectively begs for charlatans and fakers. Drives me insane.

@@geoffok You are way too overly negative in regards to the game its current state. Like honestly mate, it has been a few years. Leave the salt from 2016 in 2016. The world keeps turning. It's time to move on from the saltiness ahahaha It has been six years now
Internet Historian, Did a really great job on telling the story on how this team manage to pull the impossible. I was personally inspired on picking up on my worst and failed projects and attempt to recover them. they did the greatest and the most possible comeback in the game development. The darkside about this is that most developers think its ok to release a half-assed game. like that cyberpunk where most of the budget went to keanu avatar. The keanu was great but the rest of the game is a flop.
I've feared that possibility too. But thinking over it, to be honest, many AAA games have already been doing this years before NMS did. Just that most devs who do just abandon the game instead of taking any steps to fix it.
"pull the impossible" you mean lie to everyone and launch and release a half baked game, then drip fed the features promised at launch back into the game over the course of 8 years.
@@thelasthallow are you really not that well informed? The creator got carried by the hype and started promising things that's we're not even supposed to be part of it. And when I say "do the impossible" I meant instead of leaving with the money they chose to fix their game and rise from the shameful condition they are in. I really suggest you watch Internet Historian Video before you commented. You just made yourself a clown.
Exactly. I dont know why everyone is praising this like its acceptable to buy a game and have to wait 5 years for it to finally be playable. "Here let me buy this game in 2022 and hopefully by 2027 ill be able to play it!"
I’ve played other space sims like Elite Dangerous, etc. At the present, NMS blows them all away in terms of amount of content and bang for your buck. I was a day one buyer and like many others was underwhelmed, but I have kept going back over the years and I must say it’s the one space sim that I haven’t gotten tired of and is my favorite among the bunch.
I had an Atari, I’ll be 40 in September. I just started this game a couple weeks ago, I heard about the bad launch and I follow the gaming community everyday as a personal hobby. This game is spectacular I gotta say, like wtf else can you ask for? If you forget all the hype and just sit with this game you can feel the heart put into this, the vision. From pong to this, shit gets me all emotional as an old gamer, the torch is getting carried in spectacular fashion. Cheers.
when the game came out i was fairly convinced i'd just been conned. triple A pricetag for a game with nothing that was shown, there was no multiplayer, no character customisation, no space battles, it was literally just "farm materials so you can fly to the next planet to farm materials there." but now it is one of the most fun VR games out there, i can spend hours building bases, its so good.
I replay once every two years or so, and by then I've forgotten most of the details and am always wowed by the expanded content. And I really don't replay games overmuch, so it speaks to how much potential this game really had and how they are seizing this potential successfully. I've never regretted the original spend.
Very good review! I installed it on my XBox last week just because of this video and now I'm addicted to the game. The game is much better now and what I expected from it was also different. It's a lot of content and a lot of stuff to do, I'll probably keep playing it for the next years.
I was satisfied with this game a few patches ago, and it's more than made up for the terrible launch in my book. The fact that we're still getting more updates this many years later is a testament to the studio and their vision for their game.
Hello Games were so, so disliked after the original release. I can't believe how thoroughly they turned it around, just by the old-school methods of working their butts off and talking to the community. Frankly, the rebuild of their reputation has been as remarkable as the rebuild of their game.
I think the most impressive part about it is Hello Game's consistency. And I'm not talking about just releasing updates regularly, I mean it's seriously impressive with how consistent they've kept the theme, art style, direction, etc. of the game. Even with this recent Outlaws update, they might've added a new cloth physics system and some shiny new ships but even with all these new additions the game is still drenched in that "No Man's Sky" vibe you'd expect from a game like this. Most AAA studios seriously struggle with keeping their game consistent through updates like Hello Games has and they honestly have my respect for it, they must have one hell of a creative team backing them up
I was just playing last night for the first time in a while - it is truly overhauled, and I love it! You know a game is good when you're at work and it's all you can think about.
This has been my mind all week. I started playing it last week and i've been super busy, but I want to do at home is play it. Haven't had that feeling since I played Skyrim like 9-10 years ago
It's impressive how the devs really care about their game and their community, it's awesome how they started from a terrible launch to an amazing game. They even used the money they got from the launch to make the game we have today. And I love the VR gameplay even tho it needs some bugfixing
Sure, if you FOCUS on comparing something terrible to something par there's relative improvement, but that's the only type of comment we ever see. That's a huge red flag for people who are interested in comparisons to the wider market and have no interest in endless parroting of the same narrative.
Other companies thereafter sort of followed this type of release formula, releasing early - over promising, under delivering, and ultimately failing at the launch. However, the one thing that hello games did get right was that they took it upon themselves to SERIOUSLY deliver as much as they could from release and on... For free. AND without even actually shelling out any empty corporate roadmaps or repeating the same mistakes with their major updates.
And absolutely ZERO microtransactions to boot! Like Destiny started off kinda boring and got better but was also riddled with microtransactions towards the end. Same with Battlefront and Battlefront 2. No Man's Sky improved without all the corporate bullshit and a complete lack of microtransactions. It's amazing.
Sean Murray and the team at HG have certainly learned to be very disciplined in what they say about their work before release: show, don't tell. These days, the only indication we get that something is incoming is a single, cryptic emoji from Sean, a few days before something drops.
There are a lot of other indie games that are released to standard and fulfill promises while also getting years of free updates. The only reason why it seems special for Hello Games is because the launch of No Man's Sky was so infamous that from there to now looks more grand even though it's actually quite standard.
tbh this is a trend I'm seeing in devs industry, and especially gaming with all the modern techs and budgets, devs seems like they always over-promising about some features, then realize it is way more harder to make than they realize, hell they even failed to learn an ass old engine it seems (battlefield 2042) but what we can see from Hello Games is, they realize that and actually still pursue their dream game, IN THE SAME GAME THAT EARN NO PROFIT. Of course people are still buying the game occasionally, but any sane business will make a no man sky 2.0, or maybe ask a little fee for DLCs, but no, they make every content for free I don't know and don't play this game, but man as a web dev myself, these devs earn my full respect
Bought it in 2016, never stopped playing despite the lack of content at first The space exploration alone had me hooked Thank you Hello Games for keeping us happy
Yeah, me too. It was able to scratch a very specific itch I had since Freelancer. I only deleted one save game after the Foundation update, but have been playing it since then.
the space explortation was so bad in my mind. Everyhing looked it was made with the same handful of ingredients like Subway or some shit. Every galaxy was more or less the same, dull, quiet. Static.
I’ve played since around the Atlas Rises update and even then I felt like I had my money’s worth, but the sheer amount of content that’s been added since has just been astounding. It’s got so much to offer and anyone looking for a space sim should take some time to try it out.
I started playing this again early this year. I was blown away by how much they have added, it's much closer to the vision they pitched all those years ago and far more entertaining
I saw the hype back in the day, and knew it just cannot live up to it, so I ignored the game for years and just laughed at the results when it finally came out. Then I was introduced to Internet Historian back in 2020 and watched his "The Engoodeding of No Man's Sky". Not only was that an eye opener about the difficult situation Hello Games found itself in, but also got me to buy the game DRM-free on the next sale. I played for a while enjoyed it, but trailed off playing relatively shortly, though kept it installed always expecting "one day I'll play again". Since then I saw multiple updates, which I expected to be paid DLCs, but no... it always installed and updated, no extra cost. It is truly a game made with love, passion, and despite it's rocky launch, integrity.
Watched this over a month ago. I picked this up on PS5 and wow so glad I did this game is really something else. Thanks gameranx for the recommendation
When it added VR I went in & it’s like Top 5 VR game ever. Feels amazing in VR to run around a planet, jump in ship, take off, fly to another planet. Yes, I really feel like a spaceman
Recently joined my friends in a galaxy and we already have dumped over 100 hours in total together, because it’s just that damn fun. It’s not perfect of course but the enjoyment of the music, the ambience, and the amount of exploration that’s truly possible. My wonder of exploration is more than I originally expected even when I was hyped for the games first release date.
@@gabrielfelix1759 well yes, but not heavy combat survival like destiny gta. Love this game, I didn’t buy it immediately but I’ve had it for years. Every once in a while I find myself going back to start over and see what’s new. It is still the best VR game you can buy imo. I’m amazed at how they can provide so much content with such great quality compared to other VR games. I wish more companies put the time and love into their product that Hello Games does. I can’t help but wonder how they can afford to keep expanding this game for free but I appreciate it so much!
I tried this when it came out, stopped playing and forgot about it until now and man, what a game! Almost overwhelming to start it off now and not grow with it. I should have stuck with it over the years but glad I picked it back up
This video was a real nostalgia trip. I remember each of these updates and how the game slowly became a game I was proud to play with a community I’m proud to be a part of.
I just wanted to point out that from a micro view every "small thing" people have asked for that most games would ignore has mad it into the game. From sand worms to space whales we really have gotten all we asked for and more.
Those sand worms were actually teased before the release, they just failed to deliver. As with most of the things they promised the buyer before sales started.
@@OnyxAnger yeah. everyone knows they failed to deliver, so just dont try to sound cool, the point of it all is that they didnt take the money and run, they updated the game into making it what they told us it would be and more
I really really hope they keep No Mans Sky going for at least another 5 years; my son is just shy of 7 and has taken over my ps4 save since I moved to pc. Wonderful experience to share with him
I only bought the game about a year ago. I had been on the fence for a long time but I eventually cracked because of all the positive reviews people had about the state of the game now as opposed to how it was at launch. I really enjoyed it. It's not a game I could play for hours and hours on end but also one of those I can pop back into from time to time to do some exploring, check out a few new planets, see what's new... I am pretty amazed every time when a new update is announced. It's like the developers will never stop adding more content to it :D
I was extremely hyped when NMS was announced, then let down by the reviews so I didn't buy it on release. I found it later for a discounted price shortly after the VR update. That first dive into the universe was amazing, of course I was in VR. I was literally in that reality for 18hrs straight I didn't even realize how long I had been in there. There was a sandwich sitting next to me when I started playing. It was still there. The bread had gotten stiff and it had one bite taken out of it and my drink was warm. Just talking about it is giving me an itch to dive back in.
Very happy I stuck with it. Played the original release on PS4 I believe then I think a few years back played it on Xbox game pass on Xbox 1 and just recently bought it on steam and didn't even notice, considering I bought a VR headset to go with my PC, that it had a VR support. (Well I noticed after buying and looking at the page but you probably get what I mean, it was kinda cool and surprising)
I remember when I first heard of no mans sky and I was mind blown, I didn’t realise that a game could simulate an entire planet, let alone hundreds of them. And I am glad that the developers managed to save this game.
@@lorencelaflair4306 No need to be sad. While there are quadrillion planets, the amount of assets is very limited and so, many planets look the same. :)
@@Osmone_Everony Yes, and quite limited. By about 30-40 planet visits you've already seen it all. Still sometimes you come across a planet that feels unique due to how it was generated.
For me, an old Sci Fi- fan, NMS is like a dream came true and i consider it as something very special because of this amazing comeback Hello Games was able to pull off.
I’m someone who loves space games (Elite:Dangerous, etcetera) and was interested in this but thankfully I don’t buy games blind, I wait for reviews for the exact reason why I gave NMS a miss. On principle I told myself I’d never buy this after they did their customers dirty. Having said that, I eventually caved and bought it a few months ago because of their amazing redemption arc. They deserved a second chance and I have to say, it’s a great game. All free updates, too.

Lmfao look at GTA online...launch vs now. They definitely updated tf out of GTA
What a cool narrative!

Lonely Traveler or not, I love the game, wish I played it more
That is badass!
"some people will forever look at the devs as liars and con artists"
The difference is intent. NMS did commit to their mistakes but I, personally, never got the feeling of ill intent. It just felt like "idiots that bit off more than they could chew". Empty promises. A dream. (looking at you, Star Citizen)
They have redeemed themselves over and over and over by now. They overcame their BS and metaphorically transcended into what they are now: extremely committed developers with the best possible outlook.
"What is better? To be born good or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?"
I think everyone deserves the chance to truly redeem themselves through hard and honest work.
Yeah I still can't help but feel like Star Citizen is the biggest fraud ever pulled in gaming.
@@motorcycle-man i played star citizen during the free fly week and couldnt believe how buggy and unfinished this game is after so many years. no mans sky did so much more than CIG in less time and probably a smaller team in my opinion
@@farcry677 Yeah, same here. Have you looked at how much money Star Citizen has cost so far?🤣 You gonna fall out of your chair.

I don't even blame them for that, I blame people like you that encourage scumbag strategies like this.

honestly this showed what makes a good game.

That’s an interesting take
If they released it in this state I think they would of been praised anyways

Omg same here started Friday this game is. Crazy awesome

It really was Minecraft in Space, as both games just kept overhauling the game year after year.

The progression of No Man's Sky is perhaps one of the most amazing rides I've ever had with a video game. It's been quite the rollercoaster of emotions, happy to have made it.
Some of us who sticked to it sure did
do you like star citizen? because NMS launched as a husk of a game and over half the features that were promised at launch were drip fed into it over the past 8 years.
@@thelasthallow They promised that all features that were ever shown would be available on Day 1?

Most AAA studios seriously struggle with keeping their game consistent through updates like Hello Games has and they honestly have my respect for it, they must have one hell of a creative team backing them up
hopefully they can buy star citizen now and fix that mess.

Sure, if you FOCUS on comparing something terrible to something par there's relative improvement, but that's the only type of comment we ever see. That's a huge red flag for people who are interested in comparisons to the wider market and have no interest in endless parroting of the same narrative.
Is this game now everything you expected at launch?
After 6 years, I'll re-buy it.
Thanks for the video really good work here.
I got this on Gamepass not long ago. Man, one of the most beautiful, therapeutic games I have ever played.
The only reason why it seems special for Hello Games is because the launch of No Man's Sky was so infamous that from there to now looks more grand even though it's actually quite standard.
tbh this is a trend I'm seeing in devs industry, and especially gaming
with all the modern techs and budgets, devs seems like they always over-promising about some features, then realize it is way more harder to make than they realize, hell they even failed to learn an ass old engine it seems (battlefield 2042)
but what we can see from Hello Games is, they realize that and actually still pursue their dream game, IN THE SAME GAME THAT EARN NO PROFIT. Of course people are still buying the game occasionally, but any sane business will make a no man sky 2.0, or maybe ask a little fee for DLCs, but no, they make every content for free
I don't know and don't play this game, but man as a web dev myself, these devs earn my full respect
Bought it in 2016, never stopped playing despite the lack of content at first
The space exploration alone had me hooked
Thank you Hello Games for keeping us happy
I'm with you on this. I started playing on day 1, and have never regretted jumping in.
I come back from time to time. Every 4 months or so I put a couple weeks in. I love where it is going
Thanks for this update, I haven't played for several years, but I'm going to reinstall and give it another try because of your review. Cheers.
When it added VR I went in & it’s like Top 5 VR game ever. Feels amazing in VR to run around a planet, jump in ship, take off, fly to another planet. Yes, I really feel like a spaceman
i found myself yelling at me several times "Holy cow, i am in f*cking space, man!"
It always seemed boring to me. Maybe il finally give it a go
what do you guys do? I'm thinking of getting it
I'm watching the video sorry now I know. is there any actual survival like destiny/gta?
@@gabrielfelix1759 well yes, but not heavy combat survival like destiny gta. Rather there are difficulty modes like survival that up the severity of planets your on, making it so you have to manage recourses heavy and work fast to get off the planet and to a safer location. There’s dozens of weird anomalies you can find while flying around in space and I haven’t seen one that wasn’t interesting too. If you don’t like a bit of repetition and grind it might not be for you.
@@OnyxAnger yeah. everyone knows they failed to deliver, so just dont try to sound cool, the point of it all is that they didnt take the money and run, they updated the game into making it what they told us it would be and more
@@justanothereldenlord8165 Have fun with your meaningless worms and spacewhales. THey dont do anything in the game and are entirely useless lol.
Hopefully they add more stuff, I would like to have fun.
The terrarium was my idea.
The game still has so much potential! Can’t wait to see what the future has in store for this game ❤️
I really really hope they keep No Mans Sky going for at least another 5 years; my son is just shy of 7 and has taken over my ps4 save since I moved to pc. Wonderful experience to share with him
This game's community is probably the friendliest I've come across
18 quintillion planets*
"hundreds of planets" is the biggest understatement I have ever read about NMS. LOL
Bro you won't be able to visit all the planets in NMS during your lifetime 😢
@@lorencelaflair4306 No need to be sad. While there are quadrillion planets, the amount of assets is very limited and so, many planets look the same. :)
@@Osmone_Everony Yes, and quite limited. By about 30-40 planet visits you've already seen it all. Still sometimes you come across a planet that feels unique due to how it was generated.
I WAS ONE OF THOSE RARE TYPES, WHO ACTUALLY ENJOYED THIS AT LAUNCH AND STILL DO. THIS AND VALHEIM ARE 2 OF MY FAV GAMES
You guys should totally make a ranked list over open world space games!
Always make up your own mind dont listen to reviews
@@markling5058
How can you make up your own mind if you never play the game or read/listen to reviews?? I’ve got a handful of reviewers I trust who enjoy similar games to me and I listen to them all to help me decide if a game is for me or not.
@@stanettiels7367 because opinion is subjective and just because someone u like likes game doesnt mean u will
@@markling5058
Yeah I understand that but you can find people who share the same or similar tastes to you. That’s why I said “people who like similar games to me”. What you’re basically saying is never ask anyone for advice because it’s subjective, yet we still ask people for advice.
@@stanettiels7367 no all im saying is make ur own mind up i must be old because i come frim a time when u bouggt games blind with no reviews just hope for the best
