Did you leave the stock cooler in place, or did you remove it?
Twin Cooled Twin Cams and M8's do Not have a factory oil cooler. This is a design flaw. Oil runs Hotter on most Twin Cooled Bikes than on the air cooled bikes. On the air cooled bikes, that have a factory oil cooler, we have found that adding the secondary oil cooler, along with the oil filter relocation, is very effective in getting the bike closer to optimum operating temperatures. www.dkcustomproducts.com/why-how-to-cool-down-the-twin-cam-engine-part-i-dk-cl-tc-dn-1.htm
DKCustomProducts thank you for the reply! 👌
@@DKCustomProducts ,I could have sworn ours has an oil cooler on it. I will take a picture.
@@kevingleason5434 If you have radiators in the fairing lowers (Twin-Cooled), then the place were the oil cooler normally sits (right behind the front fender) is the water (coolant) pump.

Bought the kit a couple years ago and could not do the install because of using full size love jugs cooling fans on my 2019 Tri Glide but, since then, I have switched to the Mighty Mite Love Jugs and now was able to do the install finally. Also, I had a buddy make me a custom 5/16" diameter shift linkage rod out of 403 stainless steel with 5/16-24 threaded ends. the shift rod is 1 inch shorter than Harley's standard rod; this allowed me to keep the rear shift lever on the transmission in the stock position and not need to move it back one spline. Along with the new shorter shift linkage rod, I installed the DK Customs Heim Joints to finish up the installation. Note, you cannot just cut the factory shift linkage rod off by 1" because the rod diameter itself is less than 5/16" diameter, the factory rod threads are rolled onto the rod, so, there would not be enough thread depth if you were to simply chase on new threads with a precision die tool. I also bought and installed the DK Customs Outlaw high flow reusable oil filter. I am extremely happy with heat engine reduction of the new system.
Sounds like you have gotten it dialed into a good spot. 👍😎👍
Thank you for the report, and we appreciate your business.

I just added this oil cooler and a reusable oil filter with the relocation kit. Took it out yesterday on a 96 degree day. ET never got over 274. Where before even with my mighty mites I could see 350. This is on a 107 trike. Good stuff.
Good deal! Glad you got your ride dialed in and where you want it.
Those are some good numbers.
Thank you for your business, we appreciate it.
Wishing you many miles of smiles!
@@DKCustomProducts. I was hoping to get a little lower but the ET improved significantly. I’m going to try to mount some fans behind the oil cooler next.
@@steves2837 Easier, and less expensive, and more productive at reducing ET is a Tank Lift and/or Cooling Deflector Wings. You can see them at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/cooling-components-c661-248.htm
We have been testing various fan setups on the oil cooler for quite a while now...they are good for reducing oil temps when going less than 30 mph, but have no immediate impact on ET, and no impact on ET when going over 30 MPH.
@@DKCustomProductsI crossed Nevada yesterday on Hwy 50 and saw a high of 315 degrees. I don’t think a tank lift or wings will touch that. I’ve got mighty mites, oil cooler and remote filter with fans. The only thing left is to give it more fuel. I had a tank lift. All it did was screw up my gas gauge. No effect on ET.
The good news is the oil cooler and filter got me about 35 degrees.
@@steves2837 Good news on the oil cooler and filter! :)
The video is very helpful in the installation on my 2015 Freewheeler. It took a few hours but, it is worth it to me.
Glad you're now set up to have Much easier and cleaner oil changes, along with improved cooling. Appreciate your business.
I think back when I was your age, I discovered how nice lift tables that were wide enough for Trikes were, and how much less they cost than back surgeries. But then I didn't have young guys doing all the work on my stuff!
Yeah, lift tables are very nice. We have two, and bikes were already on both of them...plus, as you mentioned, Devin does not mind working off the floor....YET. :)
When you start an installation I think it would be a good idea to show all the items to be installed on the bench.. Not a big show and tell, just a quick intro.
Who’ll watch one current show I was jumping out of my skin to see what the part was. Plus the lighting could use some help good tip though, I’m going to do similar work on my own 2020 trike.
Thanks.
Yeah, all good advice. Thank you. We are still working at getting better at making videos.
Hi 2021 FLHTK I'm not sure if I would like the look of the oil filter relocation. If you do just the oil cooler does that make changing the oil even more difficult.
I assume you need to move or get around the added oil cooler? Good video. Thanks
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. Below is a link to another video on the subject, that you may find interesting.
If you are running passenger floorboards on your 2021 FLHTK, the oil filter relocation is not very visible, unless you go looking for it. Standing up, it is pretty much hidden by the passenger floorboard.
Changing the filter in the stock location would be very difficult with the oil cooler installed right outboard of the OEM location of the filter (behind the lower fairing vent).

Looks good, like the fans a the heads also.

Did you prime the lines, cooler and filter before starting your engine? Also interested in how much additional oil is now needed for an oil change. Thanks.
I did not prime the lines, nor the oil cooler, however, I always fill the filter about halfway before installing it. 4-6 ounces extra with a cooler and filter relo.
@@DKCustomProducts so your not increasing as much oil as you could?
@@porkchopspapi5757 Of course, after an oil change, one should always start the engine, to fully circulate it, then after shutting it off and letting it sit for a minute check the oil level and fill it to the appropriate level.
There is a different part number for the twin cooled oil pump versus the air/oil M8's. Some say the oil pump on the twin cooled is lower capacity than the air/oil M8's because they have an oil cooler in the oil routing from the factory. The question is, are there any issues with flow rates of oil on the twin cooled if you add oil tubing and an oil cooler? That is, will the flow be restricted too much given the difference in oil pumps between the two types of M8's? Since I've just gone past warranty on my 2021 RG Ltd, I'd like to install an oil cooler as my test, (75 mph 1 hour at 102 F ambient), showed max 255 deg F oil temp.
Great question...and good that you are looking into cooling things down some. 255F for oil temp is higher than you want to be seeing.
Common Question we get:
Does the oil cooler or oil filter relocation put extra strain on oil pump?
They do not. Some of the passageways in the engine are much more restrictive than the passageways in the oil cooler & oil filter relocation.
The one factor in the oil loop that can put a load on the oil pump is a paper (OEM & most aftermarket) oil filters.
That is why we use permanent performance oil filters, because with them there is much less strain on the oil pump.
There is no measurable increase or decrease in oil pressure or oil flow when installing either, or both, the oil filter relo & oil cooler.
Thank you for looking at our parts, and always feel free to email or call with any questions.

By adding this oil cooler, does it void the Harley warranty?
It looks so, but can you confirm that the passenger floorboard will fit back on after relocating the oil filter? Looks like the passenger board will mount above the filter. I have a 2015 Tri Glide.
Yes, the passenger floorboard will fit back on with the Oil Filter relo. It works in conjunction with the floorboard mount and does not interfere with the floorboard itself.

We all talk about trying to cool our bikes down many of these ideas seem good. I have a question' what about the tuner itself, how much of a difference can it make. These engines seem to run so lean
Hi Gary, we like the tuner at the following link, it is what we use on all of our bikes at DK. www.dkcustomproducts.com/dynojet-power-vision-flash-tuner-w-auto-tune-dk-pv-cmp-pkg.htm
The Twin Cams, especially since 2007 come pretty lean from the factory. A good tune will bring the temp down by about 10-15 degrees. This is a good start, not enough, but definitely worth it in performance and cooling benefits. M8's are Not lean from the factory. By the front, do you mean looking at the bike from in front of the front tire? That view does not look any different. New Subscriber here: Question- I see you’ve done a considerable amount of adjustments and updates (per your several videos) to you trike, I’m starting to think is it worth spending 30k- 50k for this, because I am not mechanically incline?
Most of the mods are fairly easy, and accompanied by step-by-step instructions.
There are a ton of folks out there that would be able to do the work for you....just make sure they follow the instructions.
There are also a lot of folks that don't do anything to their trikes, they just ride them. All depends on if you are comfortable with them stock, if you ride a lot of miles, or not too many.

With the Oil Cooler installed on my 2018 Tri-glide would the vent in the lower on the left side be totally blocked? What % of Felt Heat removal would I loose by covering the vent? TIA
It is not blocked. About 25% of the air coming thru the lower left vent does not go thru the oil cooler, the other 75% does go thru the oil cooler. There is no drop in felt heat removal. This is because the entire engine that is radiating heat onto you is dropped in temperature. So even though there is some air going thru the cooler removing heat, without the oil cooler, that air is going past the engine fins and the primary, both of which are Much hotter than the oil cooler.
I have a road glide is that relocation place gonna be in my way for standing and moving my bike around?
Good question. We have not seen that on our 2 wheelers, nor had any Customers state that it got in their way. It is tucked up pretty close to the rear left exhaust, behind the primary.

Do you have to add more oil with this relocation kit. Also you don’t really show how the oil lines are run, if your only doing the filter relocation.
it is only an extra 2-3 ounces, plus whatever you might spill during the process.
Here is a video on line routing. Yes, it has the oil cooler in it too, but just ignore that and run them along the bottom frame rail. I like to run one on the inside and the other on the outside, but that is just a preference, you can go both on the inside, or both on the outside.

Any issues with rubber hose degradation / oil contamination with the hot oil running through it? Hot liquid + rubber hose is bad juju
There is no more issue with it than any of the rubber hoses running on hundreds of millions of cars and motorcycles with hot oil, transmission fluid and vapors (PVC valves) for the last half century. Look at every Harley that comes from the factory with an oil cooler for the last many decades...hoses are rubber. I personally have run over 80,000 miles on an oil filter relocation and had zero issues.
That said, all hoses need to be inspected (ours & factory), with years of sunlight and other exposures, they will eventually weaken.
What planet are you from?

Will adding this void the factory warranty seems like anything you do voided it
Some dealerships, if you use non-Harley brand oil, they will tell you your warranty is voided.
The reality is there is nothing about the filter relo that will legally void your warranty. So there are two ways to deal with a possible warranty claim on the engine:
1. Have an honest dealer that won't give the filter relo a second thought.
2. If you have a dealer that can't be trusted, remove the filter relo before taking it in for a claim on the engine. It takes 30-45 minutes to install, but only takes 5-10 minutes to remove it.

@@b87flst good deal, we appreciate your business man!
It does not have any negative effect on passenger and will not be in the way of pushing bike forward or aft on 2-wheeler. Even if it does not help cool down oil it is a great mod. I have been riding Harley since 1977, oil filter location has always been a pain in the ass, especially on a dresser. This relocation is worth every penny just for the ease of service. I change my oil at least 2 times a year here in SC because of the summer heat. Say for instance you went to bike week and decided to be like so many other Harley riders and ride the stop and go strip in 100-degree weather while blipping the throttle so everyone can see you on your Harley. LOL. You have cooked your oil and broke down the viscosity during this event. If you really want your bike to last after returning from the showoff event you should change your oil. MOST DO NOT.!! I run straight 60 wt. in the hot summer heat here in SC and 20-50 the rest of the year, ATF tranny fluid for clutches and 75-140 in tranny, brand is a puzzle on oils, I say try different brands and let your machine tell you what it likes not your riding buddies. Hope everyone is well. RIDE ON!!!
Can the oil cooler be mounted on either side of the bike/Trike?
Most of the time...it can depend on the bike and what exhaust you are running...sometimes there can be a conflict with mounting on the right. On my ABS Softail I have the oil filter relo on the left downtube and my oil cooler on the right downtube. I know quite a few other that have done that. You can see some images of that at the links below-

@@h3r63rt I've never seen that, and would have to measure. The reason no one tries is because on a Street Glide the oil filter relocation is better suited to go under the left side passenger peg. This leaves plenty of room for the oil cooler on the left side downtube.
Where is the video where you measure how far back you put the shifter?
Kevin starts talking about the Shift linkage at the 3:30 mark on this video - ruclips.net/video/GiYjkpZaNYg/видео.html

Harley just increased the size of the oil filter on the M8 motors by 1/2 inch longer .
Yes, they did that about 6 months ago to fulfill government regulations. Tests to date do not show any significant impact on oil pump drag, filtration, or cooling.
Why not earlier tc88 touring,?
This is the installation video for 2009 -Up Two Wheel Touring Models.

The reason it will not fit the pre-2009 (earlier TC88 touring) is that the frame is different and the relocation brackets will not fit the older frames. Thus the reason to use the Universal Mounting Oil Filter Relocation linked above. KP
good video woold this go on a 2013 trike
Thank you. Yes, this kit will fit any HD Trike from 2009 and up. Here is a link to more details - www.dkcustomproducts.com/oil-filter-relocation-oil-cooler-combo-pkg-for-harleytrikes-dk-ofr-dcoc-tri.htm
Locating the filter at that location isn't it susceptible to road debris and being hit
No, it sits behind and higher than the primary case. something would have to come off the road after the primary, but before the oil filter relo...and even then, it would hit the steel bracket. In millions of miles ridden, not a single report of road debris hitting one or causing any damage. I've personally ridden over 100k miles, including many thousands on questionable roads, with no issues. See this RUclips for one of the roads- ruclips.net/video/RqNawzvP-c4/видео.html Also, on the two wheel bikes the unit is tucked in enough that when leaned over the primary will scrape far before the Oil Filter relo gets close to the ground. Kevin.
Taking rhem lowers off would cool it down too.
Jimbo, the water cooling system runs through the tops of the lowers & tank is in the right side. On my old bagger, in the heat of summer, I would take the lowers off for cooling. I carried leather covers in case of bad storms. I know, pussy, no just plain luxury while riding. The whole idea was to cool motor down.
You gotta be careful with Zip ties, they can cut through the hoses.
Yes, do not tighten them/cinch them down, and pay attention to the routing. If you do that, all should be good. I've had zip ties on rubber hoses for well over 50K miles with not even a hint of wear on the hoses.
your prices on the kit are ridiculous, I'd expect that from an HD original but not aftermarket.
Thanks for your opinion.
It is not cheap to make quality parts in the USA with USA citizens.
Don't know of any Harley part, or aftermarket part that has a Lifetime Warranty.
All the parts that we make have a Lifetime Warranty. 👍😎👍
@@DKCustomProductshe probably voted for obiden
It would be nice if it was fan forced.
If what was fan forced?
Unnecessary in my opinion, maybe if it wasn't already double cooled.waste of money and time. I always use a good after market oil cooler on my bike s.
Yes, every now and then there is a bike that does not need these to cool down (although a no-mess oil filter change is always nice), but the vast majority of Harley's, since 2007 run too hot for their own good. The worst are the Twin Cooled M8's. They have no way to dissipate heat out of the oil...they have no oil cooler and the liquid cooling only runs in the heads. Most of the heat that goes into the oil is from the oil being squirted at the bottom of the pistons...no where near any air or liquid cooling. See heat testing video (skip to the end to see the results) at this link- ruclips.net/video/2ruppXkp2CU/видео.html
