As a current owner of the 1 II though, I swear to hell, it has pretty much EVERYTHING ELSE. This thing is a fucking beast in performance, functionality, and reliability. It even has native bootloader unlocking, though I wouldn't recommend that at this time as doing so voids the warranty. (And also wipes the DRM keys. >_> Whyyyyy, Sony?)
As great as the Xperia is, I do still miss the Galaxy S5 days. :( Back when Samsung actually gave a fuck, didn't care what Apple was doing, and was an ACTUAL leader in smartphone design.

Do you guys get CrossCall phones in north america? Cuz I've only used those for the last 6 or 7 years and I don't miss my old Xperias.
They used to be only "indestructible" but now they're also starting to make them repairable with 10 years of parts supply. No glue holding front and back, but 14 screws. Thicc bezels tho.

The real takeaway here is that this implies that Norway requires phones to have replaceable batteries which is the most important part for a long lasting mobile device.

They've ground it down to the same retarded bland, idiotic, stick shapes, fucking ugly colors, and to wag their dicks about camera mega pixels. Long lasting like you said includes: removable back, SD cards earphone jacks, and a fucking charger.
The battery is still required to last 5 years, but it is only expected to last optimally for 2 years (e.g. if it drains faster, isn't charging optimally etc. then that can't be claimed under warranty, but if the battery just outright stops working the seller is required to fix it at no extra cost).

Terracube has one thing going for it over the Fairphone - it's available in North America.
That might be the only thing, but if you can't get your hands on the better one, the better one may as well not exist.

Fairphone hands down has a better product but Teracube competes with the price point. Unfortunately with those specs Teracube will most likely end up as a kid's first phone (and that kid will want to upgrade to a better one after 1-3 years of use) or elderly's last phone.

2:33 the phone can't last 4 years due to the Helio A25 SoC alone. MediaTek is known to not support it's chipsets for more than 2 android generations so Teracube needs to develop for compatibility themselves which they will (probably) suck at because they are a start-up so the phone becomes unusable and people will get rid of them no matter what.
Like that the Helio A25 SoC will explode after 2 years?! 🤦

@@VojtechRozsival Not a unlikely event with Helios. They have such a huge variance in their SOCs. Some are just horrible garbage.
Updates could just mean security updates. I don't think they would update the android version that often, because that could slow down the phone if the new version takes more resources.
Meanwhile Jolla had 7 years of Sailfish OS updates to their "Jolla phone" that launched back in 2013.
What's even worse is that if hardware manufacturers released open source drivers you could mainline the Kernel and basically have software support for as long as that device will continue to work. Sort of like linux PCs, take any computer that can run it no matter how old it is still capable of running the latest OS even if the device was released 30 years ago.
We shouldn't really praise phone manufacturers as much as we do for supporting their devices for over a year, obviously back when phones has 512m or ram that was a necessary evil but now it's completely arbitrary.
@@xhivo97 I think the movement should be to manufactures to release the drivers from old smartphones so it would be easy for the community to maintain old phones. I have an old Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus, a model that was famous on India and Brazil, it had official updates up to Android 6, i can still update it to Android 10 due to open drivers. But most of the problem with recent Android updates is also that old hardware have problem with current android functions due to using update Arm instructions and OpenGL drivers

Agree, the one company that i'm sure will be good is framework, because of the sector they're focusing in. People tend to buy phones morr frequently than laptops.

I've had the Teracube 1 and Teracube 2e since they came out and love them. Anthony didn't get the best representation of the phone. Updates and tweaking settings makes a difference. I will agree that they don't hold up to more feature rich devices, but for $200 CAD they are pretty awsome.
I also like the support they have, like root instructions on the official forum, from the company themselves. And screen replacement is only $69

I see two problems with that. The first is non-removable batteries degrading into uselessness. The second problem is the technical challenge for laypeople to flash a custom ROM.
Now, if you were to start a business which replaces the batteries and installs a fresh OS for customers, I could see that possibly working out.

I watched this video on my Teracube 2e. I use it for RUclips, Reddit, WhatsApp and little else. Whilst it's fair to say that it's obsolescent, it runs everything fine if you don't play games (I never bothered or tried; I have my Switch Lite) or need a good camera.
For me it's a phone for putting my money where my mouth is. I can't use the Fairphone here, so the Teracube is my only option for a phone trying to be nature-considerate and I want to support that endeavour.
I accept a weaker phone for that sake, and it's fine, with a little patience.
(I use both Sim slots, the SD, and wired headphones. I intend to replace the battery after 2-3 years.)
Do you mind if I ask why you can't use the Fairphone where you are?

I really enjoy the videos where you guys cover the edge case / weird technology. It's much more interesting than the latest iphone / samsung etc where it's just like "Oh wow it's exactly like the last one except with a slightly better camera". Please keep doing these!
It would be nice if you could make a "life expectancy" video about buying different "tiers" of electronics (low end/midrange/high end) and compare their environmental effects. I feel that the low end products are usually (like Anthony hinted) borderline e-waste, because the user experience suffers too much. On the opposite end of spectrum high end products use often more rare/expensive materials even when there is no advantage for it from a usability point (glass finish on the back of the phone etc).

cheap samsung phones? 2,5 years of updates, battery deteriorates after 2, becomes obsolete after 2 years. flagship gets 4 years of updates, s8 still going strong today and can be re-equipped with new ROM (unlike the midrangers that cannot run it), yeah flagships are the only way to go if you actually want some sort of "environmentally safe"

I wish some one made a phone for people who aren't photographers. I want a solid phone, good screen, processing hardware, battery with maybe one small basic back facing camera for feature like QR, paper scanning and other tools.
It could make them cheaper and have no notch and other bulges for cameras i don't use.

any cheap phone with high specs, the XIAOMI, realme, ZTE phones all have their flagships which are cheaper because the OS is barebones and the cameras as well

MediaTek Helio A25 is the chipset they have used, I'm giving it 2 years max to be able to handle updated apps, it is in the Snapdragon 450 territory.
i have a phone with the sd425 and tbh it works really well even to this date (galaxy j2 2018) so id say it all depends on the software

Legit, Anthony's explanation of how he uses his phone is my favorite thing to hear. My iPhone 5C was ran into the fuckin ground, I did the same with my 6S, and only recently did I buy a phone too early on accident, cause I thought I broke my SE, but I didn't and now I just have my SE as a back up.
I use my phone like I use a good pair of shoes. Yeah, they look good and I love having them around... but I'd be lying if I said I didn't put them through the ringer the 2-3 years I usually have them.

However watching Anthony was my main reason for watching and sticking around, the environmental initiatives are awesome I live on the coast in the UK.
Anthony, you are my hero, man. You are as smart as they come and NOBODY has more fun making a video than yourself, and you're good enough to bring us along. I LOVE the fact this thing has a replaceable battery. Freaking YEAH! Fantastic review. It is good to hear about products that DO instead of just promise. I think we both agree the phone is underpowered. But gosh it's a good step or two in the right direction.

Thank you for making this video, I love these kinds of phones.
After 13 years of iPhones I switched to an Android and this is the phone I bought. Teracube sells in North America, so that's the one I bought. Would've sprung for a Fairphone otherwise. I was interested in a Pinephone, but Anthony here convinced me not to bother. Thanks, Anthony. I'll hopefully go that route next. Maybe there will be one with a better camera by then.
Couple things, the 2e is usable as a communication device, a little slow sometimes, really slow at others, but usable. It's not an entertainment device. It's a budget phone that lets you replace the battery rather than the phone. If all anyone cared about was performance iPhones would be all anyone ever bought, because they smoke Androids for breakfast. There's no bloatware on the 2e and the promise of years of updates is a bonus.
Another thing is I'm not spoiled. I know what I use my devices for and this one... mostly fits. Other than the OS, the only thing I truly miss is a decent camera with an OK light. The camera and the light are really low end. The camera I suppose I can understand, but there's no excuse for the dim, bluish LED on this thing.
All that said, I believe Anthony hit it when he said it's going to miss it's mark because the user won't make it four years even if Teracube's support does. It's a budget phone that should be sold as one. People who are willing to, for lack of a better term, vote with their wallet would go for a more "snappy" experience and not want to lament that their snapshots look bad.

I've used all my smartphones for ~4 years+. All I do is making sure that the device can be flashed with a custom ROM and being very careful with charging the battery; I.e. not discharging below 15% and not charging over 85%, making sure the phone isn't plugged in over night. These strats served me well so far, made sure that I always had access to the latest Android versions and spared me from having to replace the battery.
Im still on my 2015 moto x pure, although I've changed out the battery twice already. Stuck on Android Nougat tho, can't be bothered to install a custom ROM yet

Batteries are available for pretty much every phone and are usually easy to replace.
I leave my phone plugged in overnight, I just use a low wattage charger (4W) when I do it.

Good SoC is definitely the key for long-term use (and a good wallet case with magnetic latch so it also protects your screen in my case :D). I still use my Asus Zenfone 5Z that's now 3 years old but it's still perfectly usable because it has SD 845. Only problem is that it's the base model so it only has 64gb of storage and I like to take pictures :D
Yup, I had to replace my 5Z today because battery was pretty much dead after 3+ years and no repair shop in area had replacement battery but the performance of that phone is still cery good and if I could find replacement I would certainly still use it for quite few more years happyli
This is definitely true. I keep my Phones in such a good condition, that after two years with my IPhone XR I could gift it to my sister. My IPhone 7 that I had before that is now been used by my mother. The only problem with the IPhone 7 is battery, but with the battery case it still does the job.

Plus SD has more active community so if no longer supported by OEM then it's easy to make your phone updated. MediaTek in the other hand...
I've got an iPhone 8 since almost four years. I replaced the battery in an Apple Store and now it is running like new. Easily I could use it for two more years without a problem.

4:05 problem with not including a charger is that when you buy a new charger because the old one is too slow for your shiny new phone, there's gonna be way more plastic, packaging and fuel being used.

I bought an iPhone XS Max that was one-year old, kept it for two, and sold it to someone I know will keep it for two more years, and honestly, he could probably sell it again and it’d get another year or two easily. Phones do not “last” 2 years, they last much much longer than that.
Hell, I have a 3Gs that still functions entirely fine, except for its hardware limitations and limitations of the web technologies smartphones rely on, and this phone does nothing to solve that.
the only thing that lasts 2 years is the battery; they are main culprit of performance degradation; especially with how many people are hemorrhaging their battery with constant overnight charging to 100%.
Iphones last that long yes. Had my Iphone 5s, pre-owned from my brother for like 4 years. So it lasted 5-6 years I guess. In the end, updates stopped coming to 1-2 of my apps stopped working on ios 12.
I got an original Samsung Note when they were released in the U.S., and didn't replace it until it became to unreliable and I got a Note 10+. The old one was easy to change the battery and I was able to get one made by Energizer at the local battery store off-the-shelf.
Yeah, at this point the unsold phones will be gathering dust and turn into e-waste.
The eco phones while good on paper, is not that viable to buy.
Yes, it has warranty of 4 years but as it was mentioned, the user themselves won't use it that long since the SoC won't be able to keep up and more and more essential apps needs more RAM to chew through.
My Oneplus 5T has been with me for 3 years, the SoC was top tier and 8/128GB is nothing to scoffs at even by todays standard.
External SD and 3.5mm jack also still available.

This seems like a phone I would get for my mom, who is still running a used iPhone 5S with a pay as you go plan for 2007. Her current phone is almost never charged or turned on but can be used in emergencies. You could almost suggest at this price point that people get it to keep in the glove box in their vehicle in case of an accident or emergency

A used iphone 8 or 7 would be a better buy. It's a similar price (in my region) and would be supported for similar amount of time or even longer. You also wouldn't be subjecting your mom to a completely different os to learn.
My mom is using my old s5, my dad my old s7. Im on a s10+ and honestly dont think il upgrade in 4 years at this point. If my batt starts to really suck il prob try to replace it, i did after all work on fixing electronics at my last job and if i kill it il upgrade, but im never really far from power and keep a batt in my backpack so even then...

I think most people that care so much about the planet are not very materialistic so they don't care about getting the best. And I think the average person doesn't buy a flagship phone, mostly just tech enthousiasts. So it's a more safe option to make a midrange phone

At a guess: If you want to make a phone with those specs, it'll cost a hefty bit. If you want to sell a phone at that kind of price, you need to be somewhat of an established brand. If you're an established brand, you don't give a shit about sustainability.

I had my Motorola X2 running for 5 years until it crapped out last January. The non-replaceable battery finally gave up the ghost. That's the only downside to all these newer phones. The non-replaceable battery is the major issue in most cases. Otherwise, I'd still be using my Motorola X2.
You can typically take it somewhere to have the battery replaced.
"Non replacable" often means only one screw driver, old credit card and a hair dryer away though. Unless they add some additional bs like Apple.

why do all these sustainable phones have to have such garbage CPUs? if you're supposed to use them for more than 2 years that's literally the most important component
They dont have the money or the volume for the more expensive processors so they usually end up getting worse processors. This also happens because a lot of these types of phone companies are also trying to be more ethical as well so they source what they can from more fair sources, sources that don't use Uyghur slave labor, African child labor, etc.
Qualcomm CPUs existing in a phone means that both companies agreed to hostile NDA's and proprietary contracts. MediaTek is the more responsible option for openness, transparency and sustainability.

MediaTek has its new Dimensity series and these chips are by no means secondary class, they actually forced Qualcomm to create this atrocity known as SD888 just to have an edge in benchmarks. The problem lies with manufacturers that just use cheapest components available to create an illusion of affordable phone. It lags today but in 4 years it will serve as a nice paper paperweight, serviceable and eco but a paperweight nonetheless.
@@kamilkilian7861 Well the thing is that these chips are "secondary class" because CPU peak performance isn't the only thing that matters. Typically these chips have some combination of; worse wifi performance, worse cellular performance, worse battery life, worse GPU performance, not as many codec's supported, worse image quality for photos, worse audio recording, poor background power consumption.
However I will tell you that in me testing many tablets over this year; the cheaper SoC's are getting much better than they used to be. Gives me hope for better stuff in the future.

Just wanna mention for the Genshin test. No matter where you play the game it’s choppy on the loading screen. That shouldn’t be a indicator it’s slow.
But frankly speaking it's not going to run well on this phone. I tried it on my iPhone 6s and it can barely run on the lowest settings. The highest settings maxed out my new iPad mini.
only iphone 13 can run genshin on 60fps, every thing in genshin is real time 3D but not pre-record video.

If you're coming down from higher-spec phones, then the hardware in this one may be disappointing and the idea of it being functional in a few years may seem delusional. I've been using my phone for three years, and it was a year old when I got it. It was also a super budget phone because I wanted a replaceable battery and that was the market segment to find it, which is funny because the phone is less disposable in its design than high-end phones. Going back to when my mom used the 2015 Moto G with the Snapdragon 410, I was surprised how good an experience that provided in general usage(browsing and video streaming). It was comparable to my SD800 at the time. I still find those old SD400-class chips usable, and the whole experience hasn't really slowed down in my observation all that much. I don't use my phone for heavy stuff like gaming. The newer chips in that class are much better too than the 28nm quad-core A53 chips that I'm still using. I could see myself being happy with the specs of this thing for years. The only issue I have with Teracube is that I heard there were software issues, though I should look again as I love seeing companies provide phones with replaceable batteries.

As much as I love the idea of the teracube, I bought a OnePlus6 a month after release back in May of 2018 and I'm still using it. I'll have to replace it by February of 2022 only because my carrier pushed out a notification that I have to have a LTE voice compatible phone. If that wasn't the case, I'd honestly be using this phone for another 2 years which would put it at the 5 year marker.
I don't know the specs of the OnePlus 6, but it's possible that if you're using it unlocked on AT&T (sounds like your carrier is either them or an MVNO of theirs, because they said the same thing about my mom's Nokia 6 from 2017), it'll still work even after the 3G shutdown date. Obviously this should be taken with a grain of salt because I don't know everything, but you should be fine if VoLTE shows up in the status bar. I'd do research on this and have a contingency plan, though.

I like it that there are initiatives like this. We do need quite a bit more common sense in tech! But maybe something mid way between Apple and this. Something reasonable both performance and sustainability-wise. I don't mind some compromises, and we all have to work on our expectations, but this is a bit too extreme for me right now.
Solution is make a good average spec phone with a removable back cover to change battery but without bothering with all this recycle plastic and paper bullshit that increase costs.
No, because we can all feel wholesome for this phone existing, while everyone is still buying the phones they actually want, i.e. the ones where neither sustainability nor repairability plays any role. Because these companies have to make a product that's worse, in this case, no IP rating and bad HW specs, at a comparatively high price point, and that puts them at a disadvantage. Instead we need legislation that requires commitment to sustainability and repairability for all manufacturers.
If I wasn't set on the pinephone pro this would be a lot more interesting.

Same, Anthony, same, 5 years on my iPhone 6s+. Had to upgrade because my camera was making a clicking sound when focusing and the slow down was getting annoying. Actually dealt with the camera until COVID sent us into lockdown and I needed to be able to photograph my work for exams. Now on iPhone 12 Pro Max and hope it can last just as long.
I've been daily driving mine for about 6 months and it really works fine for what I need. I don't do any gaming or anything intense on it. I mainly use it for calls, texts, sending pictures here and there, looking things up on the browser from time to time, listening to music, etc so I'm clearly a bare bones use case, but for that it runs smoothly, no lag. Maybe it runs better for me because the e/os (degoogled) version is more light weight?

I want more products like this that take the environment into account. Have been waiting for Fairphone to be able to be used with US cell towers, but also knowing of other options is definitely welcomed. This one may be a bit lack-luster, hoping they can improve on their quality/QA
