Google is back with their new mid-ranger phone, the Pixel 8a, but does buying it make sense when the Pixel 8 is still available to buy? With a familiar design, similar specs, and somewhat similar pricing, does Linus think the choice is obvious? Find out today on a very special episode of ShortCircuit.

Finally someone that mentions how if the Pixel 8 often goes on sale, the Pixel 8a will also be going in sale
Exactly. This whole idea of them being the same price is a myth.
The main reason for the hate that this phone gets is the terrible pricing in India
@@user-xj9vf4xb9p well to be fair the logic is that they're the same price if you're comparing an on sale 8 vs a non-sale 8a, and since 8A is a brand new release, it is not expected to go on sale for a little while, while the 8 which has been out for a while has already had decent sales.
The pixel 8 was 500 the other week... There is zero reason to get the 8a. Maybe if it had the 5000mah battery that was rumoured but nah, it has chunkier bezels, slower charging, and no battery share
ive literally been eyeing the pixel 7a for months and it rarely goes on sale in comparison to the 7a
My Pixel 4a is still rocking.
Mine too, but I really want to upgrade
went from 4a to 8a, the 4a is SO MUCH lighter and thinner, smaller then the 8a. Google gave me $140 for the trade in and $100 store credit, too much to pass up...4a was $349....nuts
Mine too, wish it still have software update. Wish smaller phone + audio jack still a thing.
@@kazuyatachibana1397 my solution to the audio jack was cheap bt ear buds (not $100, more like $2 on Aliexpress)
My Pixel 2 was getting troublesome, battery full of sadness causing soft resets when demand spiked. Upgraded to 7a on the blowout special last month after some bad experience with dodgy aftermarket batteries and the P2 display often not surviving the removal process making a "fresh" battery a poor option.
The 7a is much faster and the battery is great, but I miss the big bezels, small size, light weight, fast laser autofocus, front speakers, and *especially* that impeccable rear fingerprint sensor. Fortunately you can add more bezel with software, but I can't shake the feeling that I'd have been happier with a lightly used Pixel 5. I still miss the plastic-shelled 110g 4" phones.
Well that's the point.. you never buy a Pixel at full price. You wait for one of the many many many sales they have. So in a few months this Pixel 8a will probably be on sale for like $400..
Already 400$ on Amazon.
Best Buy already has Open Box of the 128GB version for $440 lol
I think the reason Google advertises the MSRP to be so much higher than what they will sell. The phone to you at is so that way Telco companies can sell it at MSRP and keep there whatever percentage they take and Google doesn't have to worry about losing any money on that sale because the vast majority of people who buy directly from Google will be giving them not that much more money due to all the sales they run
@@the_undead Makes sense, and those companies would complain and cause problems if the unlocked direct sale version was cheaper.
Bought mine new for 360€ with trade in deal in EU
Price on Androids (esp Pixels) drop like crazy just after the first year. My only advice buying a phone: Get a last year or 2 yr old flagship than a latest mid-range or budget. Almost same price and UX is on another level.
Yes and now with 7 years of updates it's not a big issue getting an older pixel phone
stupid advice why would u buy something so expensive without a warranty? I buy devices with warranty regardless of this pricing trick you are trying to play. Laugh now and cry later.
Exactly what I did. Grabbed a near-mint pixel 7 for 300€ last month. Looking forward to it hopefully lasting at least another 5 years
Facts
Got an awesome pixel 7 for 275 bucks
1:09 I mean the Pixel 7A literally won the MKBHD blind camera test, which had multiple dozen flagship phones, you literally can't get much better than that.
and the 6a
MKBHD gets sucked off by apple and google. I doubt he did it actually blind or any of his co workers did, when u take a look a youtubers who ACTUALLY work in the photo and video industry, its not the same. Most videos that I have seen have the 7a and 8a in the best or top 3 in the mid range category. While it never really enters top 5 (nor do most of the pixels, 8pro hit top3 on some). The thing with pixels is the sensors are not as good as most other flagships, but rather rely too much on post processing. In laymen's terms this means that phots taken will look more "fake" in terms of professional photography. The cameras and photos look great for an everyday user, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty and actually looking at which cameras and which phones take the best photos, its generally not google at the top 1 or 2 spots anymore as people like samsung, apple, and xiomi have caught up with their post processing
@@douglasgudenkauf1952I think he is referring to Blind Public test with that ELO rating. People choose the photos and not his team.
But I agree with you on the matter that its all post-processing. I haven't seen google in top 3 when independent outlets reviews a phone.
I guess its more of people's choice / social media ready photos than actual quality of photo.
@@douglasgudenkauf1952 they had many viewers blind rate them online, then took their ratings
@@douglasgudenkauf1952blind tests are done by opinions of the general public, not professional photographers with a trained eye.
as a pixel 6 user, I actually like the camera bar bump, and sometimes wish it was a bit bigger. If you put your index finger below the bump, it's really nice for holding/maneuvering the phone one-handed
The difference in Tensor G3 is actually because they're made differently. Pixel 8 uses FoPLP whereas 8a's G3 is packaged using iPoP, which decreases cost but in return - decreases efficiency. Google compensated for this in software and thus you see the differences in performance and thermals.
I assumed they just binned the chip but that is interesting
thank you for those details!
I thought all G3 are made equally. 😢
It might have been a good idea to label them differently then. Calling this version the G3a seems fitting with the name of the device.
@@DigitalJedithats actually my take. The decision itself and the impact it has makes total sense to me for their budget phone. The only issue is it being marketed as the 8/8 pros equal
am I the only one who goes to skip the sponsor section but stops myself when its Dbrand? Not because I want the product necessarily, but because it's generally hilarious? 😂😂
The 3 amp cable thing makes no sense because 9V at 3A is 27 watts. If you mean the cable is only rated for 15W then that's a different story.
Pretty much all usb CtoC cables can do 3A at 5,9,12,15 and 20V, so unless he was using a USB AtoC cable I agree, this makes no sense
they have slightly different chip
one on 8 and 8pro uses FOPLP-PoP packaging
while cheaper one use IPoP
IPoP packaging tend to have larger, thicker and runs hot compare to FOPLP-PoP
Linus still using Note 9, I am astonished to know that owner of such a large business corporation still rocks a 6 year old phone, with no security updates.
i mean I still rock a Galaxy S8....as long as the phone does what I need it to do no point in getting a new one. He doesn't game or anything on phone so the stuff he does use likely works fine.
Doesn't he also use an iPhone
His fold broke after he jumped in a pool.
@@hotaru25189 I am in favour of using your phone longer, but the problem is outdated security patch.
Not that I see someone getting in trouble with using phone on old security update, but considering every tech RUclipsr shouts on updates, it's good to see Linus behaving like a normal person does.
@@jshklsn Yeah I know that, but still he was able to use Note 9 after using Z Fold 3 for almost 2 years.
I feel like Google purposely designs the A series screen to have a bigger bezel for more differentiation for the regular models. There's no reason it should have bezels like a phone from 2015
if you've ever seen Samsung's midrangers (A54 in particular), they have similarly thick bezels. Not that it excuses it, but it's just how it is. We've been spoiled by flagships.
Real Pixel 8a has thicker bezels than the 4a (according to gsmarena pixel 4a 83.3% screen to body ratio and 8a has 81.6%)
Well Pixel 8a has even bezels all around. 4a has a chin but little bit smaller bezels where there is no chin.
Was considering upgrading but will treat myself to a pixel 9
@@someoneelse1550 My 2018 oneplus 6t cost me 500€ and has properly thin bezels. Making them thick is 90% surely just to male them uglier in comparison.
I think one of the reasons they have that bezel is because like Linus points out. Depending on how you hold your phone, that could legitimately be a make or break feature (especially on a phone where the default method for going back is swipe in from either side unlike on a Samsung where there's usually buttons on the bottom but even the Samsung a series phones do the same thing. So make of that what you will)
to everyone here, just buy the Pixel 8 by october (when the Pixel 9 drops) the price will drop significantly, and you'll still be getting several years of updates

I had a "play" with one of these in Store in the UK, yesterday. Glad I did. I was going to pre-order one as an "upgrade" to my Pixel 6a. I really didn't like the corners. They appear to "bulge" out, which doesn't do it for me. I'm planning on saving up for an 8, especially if they drop the price again!
Got the 8a a couple days ago. Love it. And it actually fits in my hand.
I did the tab for a 7 Pro, after being on an S20 FE 5G, and there's lots to love about going back to stock Android, though the slight dip in battery life is noticeable compared to my Samsung. Koodo was running a black friday promo for all of November of 2023, right as the 8 and 8 Pro were coming out, and discounting the 7 Pro considerably for the tab. I went for the 7 Pro with the $20 tab, and the 60 GB data usage cap for a discounted price of $55 and month (as existing customers get a 5 dollar discount on the advertised plan price). Previously, I had done the same with the S20 FE 5G, as the 2021 market had depleted quite a few of the flagships for stock at retailers near me.
I bought my Pixel 6a from my mom about a year ago. She had a horrible "official" Google silicon case on it. That thing morphed out of shape quick, was too sticky and thus was hard to put in or take out of my pocket and accumulated a lot of dirt. Bareback glass is just too slippery for me. I bought a real leather case and the texture is just perfect. Not slippery but also not sticky. Always feels great. (It's real leather glued on hard plastic so the shape doesn't change). Bought it from Bellroy. It's expensive at 50€, but for the object I interact with the most in my day-to-day life, for hopefully at least two to three more years, is worth it.
Go leather case people.

This is basically everything I actually want out of a full review. Honestly if I didn't see the channel I would have assumed it was a normal LTT video.
It's great to see the value in Pixel 8A from a different perspective contrary to the common mindset. As upgrading often doesn't mean to get the most expensive one, but the one that best suits your needs. This review for sure will help many consumers make a more informed decision.
I just bought a brand new 8a for 250 euros from Vodafone., arriving in 3 days. I'm upgrading from a oneplus 6 I got back in 2018. Excited to try it out.

2:53 " . . . for someone who generally goes bareback . . ." I believe Linus is NOT horsing around here. Or maybe he is a . . . Stallion
Bezels are mostly just bragging rights and dck measuring contest on spec sheet. For vast majority of the users, bezels are thin enough that they become a non issue after the first day living with the device.
A little extra bezel makes using the phone with a case easier, the case can wrap around without blocking edge gestures.

I love the 8a, got it yesterday. Directly from Google, it was only $300. Definitely worth it at that price
Had a 4a and moved to a 6a when they came out. Considered 8a but didn't seem like much of an upgrade.
I traded in my 3a for the 6a only because the trade in value was a mindblowing $350 so the price was basically $150. and let's be honest. $150 for a new phone is basically unheard of! I couldn't pass that up (but...that was two years ago, and since phones use lithium-ion batteries the battery life definitely leaves a lot to be desired. The bezels are awful. But the worst thing is the network connectivity. I have 2 bars currently on my 8a, while 5 bars on my s20 ultra.. both devices are 3 inches apart. There's no reason for such poor network connectivity. And then theres the audio.. its consistently off sync'd by a millisecond or more. the problem with these phones is now Tensor. I'm not sure when theyll match Snapdragon in efficiency, they heat way too much.
Tensor is like Samsung-level efficiency… or even worse. They are no match to Snapdragon and Apple Silicon.
Literally have no issues with my 7a. Use it in a hot car for navigation and music over Bluetooth all day at work. Get around 6-7 hours SOT on 4G. And no most phones get shit battery life on real 5G

I never had a heat issue ith my Pixel 6 or 7 Pro. Only people who care are nerds who look at specs rather than real world use
The pixel 8's biggest faults are the tensor chip and modem, it's why the battery life is so much worse compared to Samsung and apple.

1. the price is different in different regions - in many countries, the Pixel 8 has not yet become cheaper and is worth as new
2. Pixel 8a is still new and support will be longer (many people use their phones for 8-10 years, not a year
3. it's smaller and that's cool

Just picked one of these up as i needed a new phone pretty quickly. I saw yalls review and decided to look into it. You just cant beat it for the price. Sure the others are better, but specifically for the price it is fantastic. My old phone was messing up and i rely on my phone for many things. Im liking it so far. Very snappy. I feel this is great example of a budget version of a flagship phone. Not filled with junky parts or the last model cpu. It does go to show that you dont have to break the bank or spend 1-2k on a phone. The 7 year support was also a major selling point on it for me
As the most vocal majority, reviewers should give more praise to products that include a charger in the box so that manufacturers will use that as a competitive advantage
What do you need charger for ? If the phone can't do 66W at least , you really don't need a charger from the manufacturer bcs you probably already have one. And I have a lot of various chargers at home that can already do at least 60W ( 120W for my phone , 100W for my notebook , 60W multiport charging brick ) , i really don't need another one. That's the whole point of making all gadgets USB-C

Damn, this review was amazing! Very well done and not based like some other phone channels, thank you! :)
No comment on the ongoing signal and overheating issues?
I'm on Google FI and they have the 8a available for $299. I have a 5a right now and I'm really tempted to upgrade.
Decided I'll be sticking to pixel devices after I got this 8 pro
8a launched at $849 here in Australia. Major retailers are offerings $300 off when you trade-in an old phone, plus $200 back in gift card, plus the actual trade-in value off. Pretty good deal.
