Very well made scene visually as well as symbolically. I've always thought (whenever I saw it) what could the interpretation be like: 1. "mum don't talk to me because I'm praying"; 2. Pray for me; No matter what it is, it best reflects the change of heart Francesco got through before his conversion
My guess has been the 2nd. And I love Valentina's accent in this scene, it's more of Frenchish than Italianish. That's the way an authentic actress is.
This makes Francesco a Momma's boy. He wasn't. Zeffirelli used way too much poetic license in this movie and much of it is an absolute lie! As a work of fiction however it is very beautiful and inspiring. Zeffirelli should have known and told the truth about Saint Francis. Maybe he was too lazy.
