This scene is the pearl in a wonderful film. I had the privilege of visiting Monreale Cathedral, Palermo, Sicily where this wonderful scene was filmed. There I prayed for the late Sir Alec Guinness.... He beautifully portrayed from the heart the words and gestures of Pope Innocent III. A most memorable scene that gives joy and hope to our world

I made a sort of pilgrimage to Assisi many years ago. Before the sadness of the great earthquakes. Toured both the church of St. Francesco and St. Clare. The original chapel in the valley San Damiano where the Lord spoke to him. Very moving and has never left me.
Interesting to revisit this piece (both) and read the comments. Clearly the commentors are impressed by the apocryphal presentation and the impossible dialogue to confirm versus a comment of actual visitation and the heart felt movement of the soul by someone that appreciates the life of St. Francis. Yes, St Francis and a few of his followers met with the Church. The record of what was said has been lost to antiquity. Rome (The Church) would not and did not welcome them and they were at odds for a Very long time.
I love this movie because it shows how like the Pope said our original sin, in our human errors, we must seek Humility, But the church still stands, Guided by God Himself, that's what matters. Love Mother church. God bless

That was Graham Faulkner, and this was his first film. He was in a handful of TV and movie roles after this, but never achieved stardom. He left acting permanently after 12 years and went to work for a British bank.
I saw this film in 1972 I loved it even though im an atheist because it is such a thing of beauty and so authentic the concept that we are one with the world and all of nature is very comforting

My first choice was Sunil Nagar, whom I've seen as Pitamah ( =Grandsire) Bhishma in Ramanand Sagar's Shri Krishna, but as it turned out that he was non-cooperative (I assume he's atleast bipolar), I had to investigate again. If I hadn't chosen Rajpal Premi for Pietro di Bernardone, I don't know what the heck would happen to the Hindi dubbing. Because Raj has unwillingly (by a Facebook post) reminded me of another serial in which he played: it was Sanjay Khan's Jai Hanuman where he had the title role. I checked out the cast, browsed all the actors in senior roles - and found Sudhir Dalvi, who was Sage Valmiki 2.0 in the serial. An interview with him was the proof that he's an even more authentic counterpart of Sir Alec Guinness than Sunil. I've given a big thanks to Raj for his outstanding social capital, which always keeps some first aid for the werk progress. He's an unreplaceable part of the dubbing cast. Phalguni Parikh / Pica also confirmed that I've chosen the new Pope well because Sudhirji was a very sober man.

The pope saw the innocence and simplicity of St. Francis, so this is why he said it. Any man or woman can achieve this innocence and purity, but it requires we interiorlly detach ourselves completely from the world and sin, and have our heart set out completely for Jesus. It's the only way.
God again knocks at the door of our hearts, leading us to St. Francis and his example. A life of simplicity, fraternity, and poverty, just as Pope Francis and the Church today urge us to!
When the pope is wrapped in those robes, the way that he closes his eyes in resignation makes them almost seem like chains. I think, perhaps, that for holy men like him, wealth and authority are burdens. However, for a truly holy man, no burden is too great to undertake in the service of God. And yes. This film is full of historical and technical errors. However, inaccuracies not withstanding I believe it more a film or an artistic interpretation of the Spirit of Saint Francis. Another Italian movie called Clare and Francis dubbed in American and not British English is a full biography and much better.

The glory of the beautiful churches was and is a great Catechism for all, especially the poor and illiterate of old - who were most people up to the 20th century. How many have been led to faith by the holiness that lives in those spaces. But God lives everywhere? How true, and how easy to forget, as our daily world (more now than in the past I think) contains so many distractions and so little to remind us of Him. Every Church reminds us of what the world is and our culture and lives are meant to be. We are the living temples of the living God. Tabernacles, if you receive His Body and Blood, and have Life within you.

St. Francis came into my humble life to provide SPIRITUAL STRENGTH as I accepted responsibility to take care of my blessed mother first in hospice care @ homf followed by my loving father as well for looking back now after their passing into the HIGHER PLANE it was the best thing I've ever done in my.life since.as it changed me in a way that it's hard to put into mere words forever revealing to.me the path I have now taken in TRUTH fir the remainder of my time on this plane.♡

This film is full of historical and technical errors. However, inaccuracies not withstanding I believe it more a film or an artistic interpretation of the Spirit of Saint Francis. Another Italian movie called Clare and Francis dubbed in American and not British English is a full biography and much better.

Like the bible it is not a book that describes heaven, but how to get to heaven; riches are not bad; they are a means of doing good to others.
The glory of the beautiful churches was and is a great Catechism for all, especially the poor and illiterate of old - who were most people up to the 20th century. How many have been led to faith by the holiness that lives in those spaces. But God lives everywhere? How true, and how easy to forget, as our daily world (more now than in the past I think) contains so many distractions and so little to remind us of Him. Every Church reminds us of what the world is and our culture and lives are meant to be. We are the living temples of the living God. Tabernacles, if you receive His Body and Blood, and have Life within you.

In my opinión, this final escene, and the convertion of the Saint Francisco, are the best escenes of this movie.
This scene reminds me of photos I have seen of mosaics in Ravenna. Zefferelli had a painterly sensibility.
