Suit up for classic comedy! Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) take a chance on going freelance, de-haunting houses in a new ghost removal service. As soon as they open their doors, their first order of business becomes saving beautiful cellist Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) and nerdy Louis Tully (Rick Moranis), who’ve inadvertently opened the gates of hell…right in their own apartment building!
Took me years to realize Egon was coaching Venkman on the pricing scheme with hand signals.......that and Dana mouthing the words "*sshole" when Egon suggests she might be delusional ("....thinks she's telling the truth").
Because Egon was the only one of the three of them that was watching the money, he knew how deep in the hole they were.
Same here, watched the movie countless times before someone pointed out to me Egon giving Peter the hand signals.
The scene was probably not visible in the pan and scan version.

I remember being five years old and watching this movie for the first time. I got this rush of excitement when the Ghostbusters walked into the hotel with their uniforms and Proton Packs. Ever since that day, I've gotten that exact same feeling with every successive viewing.

It is great, and you can imagine Slimer was just as spooked of Peter as Peter was of him!
Funny how they made him their pet or mascot for the animated series.

The hotel manager was in the Star Trek TNG episode "First Contact." He played the defense minister of some alien planet the crew was visiting.

since the movie came out I've seen it many times over the years and about 5 years ago I was watching the movie and finally noticed Egon useing hand signals to name the price for the job they did.
that was mentioned in the commentary on the DVD in 1999/2000, which is when I noticed this! (I saw this in the theaters in 1984, even!)
The elevator start up scene always made me morbidly curious with the way Egon backs away as best he can. Just WHAT would happen if the pack got breached and exploded or whatever lol considering it's nuclear related, nothing good I'm sure.
its not a nuclear reactor lol. it just spins protons taken from the radioactive decay really fast and shoots them out. so imagine a handgrenade going off with the shrapnel being near atom sized

Something I never noticed but except for the dream and appearance on the Joe Franklin show in the Ghostbusters montage sequence Dan Ackroyd is in his Ghostbuster outfit for the rest of the film from this point. Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson are in scenes with regular clothes but not Dan.

Precisely why I hated the new movie. Introducing kid Ghostbusters in the cartoon was bad but in the movies for 2021? I hated it from the get go but reluctantly watched it anyway, and I hated it even more afterwards

Slimer wasn't needing to get caught but his overwhelming sadness about the food they destroyed in the ballroom crushed his spirit and he gave up. This is clearly the solution to obesity.

This movie is just so funny and hilarious.
One scene lasting almost 10 minutes has just so much comedy gold. I just saw the courtroom scene from the sequel and that has a lot of laughs too:

From 7:59-8:00, it's funny that it sounds like Slimer was either saying "oh yeah" or "uh-huh" after Peter teased him that he'll never be able to slime someone with a proton stream.

1:37 This scene right here (and quite frankly, the rest of the movie) shows why the 2016 flick is absolutely inferior to any of the real GB movies. The laughs come from the 3 Ghostbuster's reactions and by those reactions you are told that this weapon is not something you should trifle with. It takes the 2016 version almost a whole minute (56 seconds), with forced jokes that don't land, in order to unnaturally prolong the scene.
In Ghostbusters, it doesn't have to explain to the viewer the joke that the Ecto-1 is a hearse. The audience can see it with their own eyes and naturally get the joke. In 2016 they tell you outright that the car is funny because it is a hearse. And they proceed to unnecessarily extend the joke instead of progressing the story.
That is the real problem with 2016. It goes out of its way to explain the jokes rather than show them and let people come to that conclusion themselves. As such, it takes away earned laugh(s) that it could have done with showing rather than telling. And that is exactly why it wasn't very well received by anyone with even a slight understanding of the original.

1980's pop culture was saturated with Ghost Busters. My Mom bought a GhostBusters book from school. As soon as I got onto the school bus, the other kids wanted the Ghost Busters stickers that came with the book.
This whole scene sets up Venkman, you can see how little he cares about catching ghosts, it's just a money making thing to him. Even after they catch slimer he isn't enthusiastic about successfully trapping a ghost for the first time he's already ready to bill the hotel.

To be fair to the Ghostbusters, if it had been an ordinary ghost, they probably could've dealt with it with minimal resistance.
Slimer just so happened to be an exceptionally powerful Class 5 that was virtually impossible to deal with without collateral damage- the psychic equivalent of having a wild elephant storming around the hotel.
Also $15K in today's money is dirt cheap for nuclear storage. Especially when it can be written off as a business expense.
