I can understand why they might remove a name if the skill is banned, like with things like the Korbut flip and the Thomas salto, but removing names for no reason or because you only want C+ elements to be named seems disrespectful to me. Even if they want to not name new B and A skills, at least leave names on the downgraded skills.

Either take them all off (my preference) or not. This singling out particular skills to de name is not good. Also, they should wait until the end of the year and review all new skills before deciding. That would lower the number of mistakes to be fix3d.

Present-day gymnastics is SCREAMING for originality, such as in Kelly's skill. Instead what happens now is that one skill gets a high value and then EVERYBODY starts doing it, ad infinium, ad nauseum--i.e. the candle mount on beam and wolf turns on beam and floor. Unfortunately, I'm not sure this will change until bonus points start being given for originality. The Code used to value originality & creativity, which is why I feel the sport used to be far more interesting.

This channel has served one function above all else, ingrained a burning disdain for the FIG in all respects. The absolute audacity this federation has to micromanage so many elements of a sport that should be wild, diverse, creative, and classy, is reduced to a formulaic and watered down mess. if a skill was named after a gymnast, it should be keep that name regardless of the changes of the cop. that is something that the gymnast accomplished at a time, so it´s unrespectful and low to erase their names. even if the skill is banned it still exists and it was credited at some point. once you give it a name, just dont take it away.

I think there needs to be an official explanation for the removal of any eponymous skill in the code. Otherwise, it looks like political bias and unjustified "revisionist" history in the sport. yes! this makes sense to me. I feel like they need to explain all major changes, just to have official reasoning on the record. it would honestly make the process so much more transparent and make the rulebook more accountable to the sport in general.
I wish there was a way to formally suggest changes that would be officially submitted to the committee that goes through the Code to make changes for the next quad. I feel like that would increase a sense of ownership over the sport for everyone who enjoys it, either as a participant or audience member. it would encourage more formal debate and a more democratic attitude. why shouldn't athletes and coaches, etc., get to advocate for their own sport in an official manner?

Let’s not forget that her judging license was suspended by the FIG for a time, after a 1990 World Cup, due to allegations of cheating and fixing scores…. But she was reinstated a few years later because obviously the FIG can’t survive without her. Yes… good job FIG

Dominique Dawes & Kerri Strug were a world renowned performers who carried the U.S team to the top quite often. Moceanu was a national & world AA champion. The official justification for the removal of the Borden was that the FIG decided that a straddle 1/2 is the same skill regardless of whether it's performed to the side. This logic is completely undermined by the fact that they award +.1 bonus to skills performed to the side. So a straddle 1/2 is usually a C-value skill, but if you perform it from the side, it's a D-value skill. Yet somehow the FIG maintains that it's the same skill despite having different start values...

sidebar: would it be possible to make a video about current German gymnasts like Pauline Schafer or just all of the most well known or reasonably recent ones? I just watched a video that talked about her eponymous skill on beam, and I've always loved watching Schafer compete.
and tbh I also like the idea of the people who hate the new German leos having to see more of them 😂 also can I just say how much it reduces my anxiety to know they don't have to worry about wardrobe malfunctions? it's something I constantly worry about on their behalf lol and now they don't have to use any of that adhesive spray to keep their leos glued to their butts. that stuff can't be good for your skin

This is the problem with the subjectivity and lack of transparency of the FIG. They don't list their criteria and they give no reasons for why a name is removed from the code. And when you arbitrarily add or remove names of skills from one code to the next, the history of the skill is lost. Nobody can tell you who the first gymnast was to do the double layout because there's no footage of it being performed for the first time at a World Championships or Olympics. And if there is, it isn't identified as a "new" skill or by a name. Mary Lou Retton is the first female gymnast I've ever seen compete a double layout at an international competition. However, the skill is not called a Retton. It's not called anything but a double layout for some reason. They treat it as though nobody performed it first.

as a lawyer (and thus trained to see bullshit in rules), I would argue that, if FIG's reason for removing the names of these skills is that they are rated B or A and the rule states that new elements must be C or higher, it's real dumb reasoning. the rule explicitly states that *new* skills and elements must be C or higher. unless there is an addendum that wasn't listed in the video or some official commentary in the Code (a footnote or note in the appendices), the rule does not imply or mandate changing any skills that already carry a name.

@@robbywinslow8948 she actually had MULTIPLE skills on every event except floor. Two vaults (one of which has been combined with Podkopayeva's under Lilia's name even though Sveta did her variation first.. but she still has the RO half-on tucked Rudi off), the Shap-half on bars as well as another 1 ½ pirouetting skill that again, I think has been removed. On beam she has a gainer 2 ½ twist dismount and a gainer full-twisting back-handspring (which I *thought* was being removed but is still there, praise be 🙌🏽).

Gymnastics has become so cookie cutter. Try to pack the most skills in for the highest maximum difficulty. I wish they'd bring back the compulsories for the Olympics. A great way to evaluate each gymnast doing the same skill sets. Plus the competition would be longer...I miss the compulsories🥺
