There is something very satisfying about the arabesque so I would love to see them again. Also, one arm giant is "too dangerous" but the mo salto isn't? I think they need to take a hard look at how ridiculous the code is sometimes.

But everything else needs to come back, and taking them out of the sport has made everything one-dimensional, identical, and boring. There's no variety anymore. The quad series on beam was incredibly difficult and it makes no logical sense why this isn't given any credit anymore. Back-to-back tumbling when executed correctly was a huge crowd pleaser and also encourages artistry and variety. The arabesque is a pretty element that also adds flare on beam skills. And the one-arm giant was ridiculously undervalued for a very stupid reason (basically the same thing happened with Simone Biles beam dismount and vault). I really wish the FIG would go back to encourage variety and stop trying to homogenize the sport. Different gymnasts have different strengths and weaknesses. Why not accentuate the variety and differences in style?
How interesting about the one-armed giants it’s very much like the Biles beam dismount (double twisting double). Where the point value is scored at the same level as an easier element to dissuade gymnasts from harder skills with higher risk of injury. While I can understand this logic, it seems a bit unfair to athletes that try to push the sport forward into new levels. Like after Rio, every girl and their sister were attempting (some very successfully) the Biles (double layout with half twist).
Don’t stop at the bars-beam, floor and vaults show very little differentiations. They should go back to having compulsories AND optionals-and all gymnasts should have to do all around. I see fewer and fewer girls actually engaging with the crowds, few have strong dance training, and it’s rare to see girls performing in the present-they appear disconnected from all movements in between those that are in the COP.

I cannot help but think that the code for 1 arm giants wants changed because of the impression that it may give the world that in elite sports like gymnastics women can do exactly what men can do and move between a high and low bar with grace and polish. After all they are working with bodyweight to ratio strength. hmmm. That is disheartening, all because they say, it's unsafe as if the athletes themselves do not know their own capabilities...disappointing.

It came back for a while mid-2000’s. I remember seeing Nastia Liukin doing a lot of it. But it doesn’t “flow” or look as pretty as back tumbling. I remember Paul and Morgan Hamm also commenting that they didn’t like the trend at the time because the skills just weren’t as difficult but were getting big scores due to the CoP.
I feel the one arm for the women was taking out at that time because nobody else was doing them and completing them and therefore they removed it and that's kinda crappy. I love gymnastics since I was two years old and I started even before then from what mom said. She said when I was in my crib I would flip out. I just feel like more could do that move today because gymnast are so much more advanced today and that is one strong move for a woman and it use to be a requirement for the men in the 80's.

Miller used to have a pirouette named after her on bars but hop 1/1 is named after Chuso
I remember seeing back to back tumbling during the 90s and in gymnastic movies
ok full tea I’m so glad cat leaps aren’t popular anymore. They were NOT aesthetically pleasing (to me) nor particularly difficult, so mostly I felt like they were a low-effort dance move that didn’t really add anything to the overall routine.
It seems a shame that the quad series is a thing of the past. It is so impressive! And I really love the cat leap, it looks so elegant and very different to what we commonly see these days.
The arabesque is definitely so beautiful, I’d like to see this come back.
I don't follow much of the men's gymnastics, but out of curiosity, do they mention "safety" when valuing or devaluing skills on the men's side?
Yes, they banned the "Radivilov" vault bevause it's incredibly dangerous (can sb help me out? They did ban it right?)
thomas salto and rollouts? (women did these too tho so not sure if it's relevant, feel free to correct me!)
Great vid! Thanks :-)
You forgot the sheep jump on beam!! I am still mad about them downgrading it. Virtually no one does it anymore.
Can you please do a vid on why they moved the bars out from being in so close
i like the cat leaps and the 4 skill beam the most
I love your videos so much
I love the arabesque landings. I wish those would make a comeback.
The effective banning of the one-armed giant on uneven bars still steams me.
I just don't see how that is any more dangerous than some of the stuff done for floor exercises. SMH.
The arabesque landing is so beautiful, it's unfortunate that it was downgraded as to not be used.
The 4 skills, also on bb could be done with other skills, it has been done. Maybe with the gymnasts growth it's too risky?
Just like our education system in the US, teachers teach to the test and students only learn what is required to pass the test. There isn't any creativity or exploration. So sad
I would love to see the one-handed giant!
My favorite is the one arm giant swing.
3:07 perfect, Bo Yang
Landing in arabesque is still popular. And cat leaps are still widely used.
Who is the gymnast @ 2:28? I remember watching her routine on television when I was . . . 12. 0.o And I loved her Arabesque, but I could never remember what her name was to rewatch her routine. All I remembered was the blonde-hair pink-outfit combo and that one move, lol.
Nastia Liukin
@@susannahwithanh THANK YOU!!!
@@susannahwithanh do you know who 3:09 is?
I cannot help but think that the code for 1 arm giants wants changed because of the impression that it may give the world that in elite sports like gymnastics women can do exactly what men can do and move between a high and low bar with grace and polish. After all they are working with bodyweight to ratio strength. hmmm. That is disheartening, all because they say, it's unsafe as if the athletes themselves do not know their own capabilities...disappointing.
How gymnastics has been dumbly "uglyfied"
Every year, the women are moving towards the men. Every year, the ballet/dance training has been replaced more and more with strength training. The bodies more masculine. There is no room for personality and no place for individuality.
@@djstace808 I totally agree all I can hope is that the code of points is changed back. But of course that will never happen. I just don’t understand how the judges don’t value originality and fluidity and balance. All of the routines before around 2005 were really good especially in the 80’s. You don’t even think of gymnastics as a graceful sport anymore.
@@addisonm5423 Indeed! I was competitive (nationally) 1977-1982. It was a completely different sport. ❤️
Silivas 88 back to back was the best
Either ban it or don't but if you don't why rate it low, that just seems silly
FIG = Fun Is Gross
Or Fun is Gone! 😢
O love the back-to-back (Silivas ❤️), what a pity they don't do It anymore
thst cat turn/spin... whatever you call it was cute. I would love to see/manage to be able to Do that.
I would like to see the arabesque skill on beam that was so cool
The cat leaps with some difficulty added.
I dont understand changing the arabesque on beam, but i guess im also not a gymnast so what do i know
1 arm giants can cause serious injury. You can pull a muscle easily easily.
The fig has had changed rules now only allowing 4 runs which I agree with. I’m happy with the changes.
I feel like older (Olympic) gymnastics was much more graceful and impressive. Granted I know nothing about gymnastics. Just from a viewers point that's how it appears to me. Even in this video I can see a difference
I loved the back to back tumbling and the acro series.
As a former gymnast… gymnastics are such a sexist sport. While men‘s gymnastics is about strength, balance and control, women are grated on dance routines, tumbling and looking pretty in leotards.
Really one of the reasons I stopped.
it didn’t explain why the first one was banned. I don’t get why the quad whatever was banned.
The routines were far superior in the 90s, so much more artistry and flow.
my mom was a dancer, acrobat and gymnast as a child in the 80s - 90s she used to do these stuff,
the 1 arm should definitely be a thing in women's gymnastics. "to discourage women from attempting" is kinda lame
i still like the cat leaps 😍
bruh men do the one armed giant a lot, why would be ever so unsafe for a woman to do it?
I do gymnastics but I would not even attempt that skill if it was even still aloud it just looks cool
also havent seen front tumbling since the 90s. got tired of seeing so much of it tho kind of like the double pike😴
Bring back the one armed giant.
The one arm giant couldve evolved into something crazy today if it was allowed better scores at a great risk of course.
Arabesque landings - they're really hard, and look lovely.
U have a cat leap in my routine though-
I always watch these videos as a gymnast and I’m like sirrrr that’s incorrect
Gotta love Liu Juan
I want to see it more artistic, like it was in the 60s and 70s.
Why can the men do 1 arm but the women it's too dangerous?
There is very little grace and artistry now. I miss gymnastics of the 70,80,90s and early 2000s. It’s so boring now
When I think of exciting…remember Danielle Silivas and Elena in the 1988 Olympics! Now that was artistic, creative and exciting! Simone doesn’t hold a candle to them in my opinion other than tumbling but probably code of points. I just find today’s gymnastics so boring
one armed giants should be higher because even if it is hard it’s encouraging gymnast to work harder and let’s be honest here everything’s in gymnastics is dangerous and hard, and imagine a move being named after someone and they quit doing it
i miss how gymnastics used to be. It was just so pleasing to watch and graceful now a days it’s boring and feels the same you don’t get the same vibe as you did in the 90s
Cat leaps should be back
Isn't it kind of sexistic to demotivate women to do a skill (one armed giant) by not valuing it, while it's completely normal in mens gymnastics?
