I liked the direction BB went in general, with lots of ways to get bonus and string combos together to get a good score without needing to learn F or G elements. I was disappointed they didn't do much with UB to encourage diversity and innovation and everyone ended up doing some version of the Mustafina routine. I also didn't like the trend of way more C dismounts cuz boring.
i agree except for the c dismount part, they're more injury-friendly and honestly i prefer to see a clean C dmt rather than a D+ dmt lacking height, form, etc.
@@singsongeric how many terribly executed double tucks did we see before? If you bring back the dismount CR, that's what we'll get, and I'd rather just have the variety. Plus it really is safer for the athletes - in 2021, Suni downgraded her dismount from a double tuck to a double full because of her injury, while adding an extra BHS to make up the difference. She said she never liked beam dismounts and she got fewer deductions, so why not? I think the real issue is the lack of higher valued dismounts - it's basically a double tuck, double pike, or 2.5 twist if you're a twister. Leanne Wong did a triple twist until her growth spurt, which was great to see, and appropriately valued, but the only other high value dismounts are the Patterson and tucked full in. The full in pike, bizarrely, has the same rating as the tuck, so we never see it. Equally bizarre is the double front rating as an F, below the full in (wtf??), and also not really eligible for CV. You also don't see any forward twisting dismounts, like the front 1.5 or 2/1, in part because it's harder to get the CV bonus, so if people really wanted diversity they should discuss upgrading those.
@@rebeccasilver2181 valid points! I also want to add the other group of BB dismounts you missed, which is those single salto gainer dismounts off the end (seem to be more popular in Europe and nowhere else). Considering they're relatively simple to do, and everyone pitches them slightly off to the side (ie. no real risk of hitting the beam with head or feet), I'm surprised it hasn't caught on like wild fire all over the world. That being said, I'm glad it's not more popular because I can live with a clean double full or a Rudi for the sake of variety, but nothing is more anti-climactic than a gainer layout BB dismount. Even with a full twist I feel very meh about it. I'd much rather they increase the value of something like Khorkina's gainer double full off the side where you can really generate momentum from a cartwheel and maybe even get CV, and they're kinda interesting.
i love the piked jager. it's so beautiful and flowy in my eyes, and it doesn't make me go "oh no don't dead hang don't dead hang" like flight elements ending in mixed grip. also, i hate wolf turns and i vow for their full banishment. love the nguyen tho, hope it shows up this quad.
i really hate bars releases with the half turn. they were ok before, such as beth tweddle's but now people (ahem derwael) just seem to cross their arms on a non-turning release and use that momentum to form a half turn rather than actually doing it...
@@leykimayri at the time they grab the bar, the skill ends, and now half turn at that point, they are cheating and wanting to use the momentum when they twist their hands to connect to other skills
Whatever the quad, I will always love the Sheep Jump and wish it could be graded a point or two higher. Why it's just a C when it's so risky, demanding physically, and fun for the audience is a big mystery to me. I'm sure there's a reason...did the judges grade it a C in order to discourage gymnasts from taking risks? Please enlighten! (I also love ring leaps, which involve many similar demands, plus the extreme flexibility. Seeing these done well is such a pleasure! I adore beam...even enough to witness the heartbreaking falls.)
Sheep jump was downgraded from D because there were many gymnasts doing it terribly and getting credit (see Claudia Fragapane for example). Rather than teaching their judges how to take proper deductions for it (as they do for ring leaps) FIG just downgraded it which is the lazy approach
"the new Code of Points doesn't allow gymnasts to perform more than one spin from this specific root in the same routine". And THANK GOD. Wolf turns are FUGLY AF and back to back wolf turns honestly ruin a routine for me. I *especially* hate it when the gymnast does them on beam and on floor (Simone, I love you...but I am looking at you). Even when they are done perfectly they are a hot dumpster fire of a train wreck. If I never see another one, that will be too soon.
@@KatieLHall-fy1hw even the most beautifully done wolf turn is just...*gag* I mean, i know they require strength, balance and skill, but so do the Semanova, Mustafina, Gomez and Berar, and THEY don't make me want to spork out my own eyes.
I agree completely, they're the one skill Simone does a lot that I just can't stand, even when it's perfect. I'm so glad we won't be seeing them as much.
I feel like there were a lot more acro/flight elements than there used to be, and fewer “still” skills like the various handstand skills, which show a different kind of balance but also have more grace and elegance
I'd like to see BB move away from being nothing but tumbling/acrobatics and go back to being a better mix of tumbling and dance elements. Shawn Johnson's beam routine in 2008 was great, but it was boring. There was no grace or artistry to any of it. It was backflip after front flip after backflip after Arabian after backflip. It seems like Sanne Wevers is the only gymnast currently who values artistry over just flipping all over the place, which I appreciate. Artistic gymnastics should be *artistic*.
This makes me so hopeful for some new creative exploration when it comes to beam mounts! Also anything that reduces the number of Wolf Turns is a plus for me 👀
I don't have a favorite but I'm so glad the wolf turns are going to be less featured!! i was never a fan of them. I guess out of these my favorite was the candle mount, so sad its not going to be a thing anymore bc of the downgrade!! I also LIVE for the brazilian and chinese ring leaps
Another big trend from 2017-21 was using double twist as dismount on beam and floor, after the end of the D+ DMT composition requirement. Also the return of front combos (2 1/2 twist + front tuck; front tuck/layout + double tuck; and front tuck/layout + double twist) since aerials don't fulfill front requirement anymore.
Probably because almost every gymnast had it in their routine and it's not a huge jump in difficulty in comparison to the straddled version. Don't know why the layout version was lowered before though. Hardly anyone has done it
I understand the need to fulfill the requirements, but if most of the skills are performed horribly what's the point? Bent knees, terrible feet, wobbly turns, horrendous splits... If execution does not matter then let's take all choreography (weaving hands around) and dance elements out.

Well, it's that a lot of gymnasts can't really do them all that well. Their arms flail around and when done on the balance beam, they look like they're about to fall off. It's very rare to find gymnasts who can do them well. Plus repetitiveness since so many do them.
What the other commented said^^ plus I don't know if you've seen a lot gymnasts do wolf turns and fall off beam or fall out of the turn but it happens a lot and is not pleasant to the eye. The wolf turn done to perfection and done at the right speed isn't all that bad. But some do it too fast to compensate for the difficulty (sorry Simone) and some do it too slow to where it looks like they're a toddler trying to walk. Shaky and fumbling with no balance.
It’s the forward combos for me!! There’s something so captivating about them
They manage to take the entire energy of a routine and transform it into art.
