Women's Artistic Gymnastics has drastically evolved over the years, and with that, a lot of changes have taken place - some for the best, others not so much… In this video, we'll take a look at things that have become less and less common with each passing cycle, or have completely disappeared from the compositions being performed nowadays.

I'd like to see a return to a handstand hold in the middle of the routine. They're pretty, they showcase balance, but without taking the time or energy a handstand mount does.
This rare skill calls the phillips from Kristie Phillips
Same!
😅😅😅😢😮😮😅In den. 7iuj7 😅
Yes!!! I wanna see more of those skills like the Miller!
@@rugbyplayer9100 Shannon was always my favorite gynmast
I feel like the 90s was an excellent balance between athleticism and artistry in both gymnastics and figure skating. It's my favorite decade for both.
In total agreement!
Me too! They were elegant, athletic and charming
true. Some of the women's routines nowadays look quite similar to the men's routines (more strength-focused), which in my opinion takes away the uniqueness and most of the grace women's gymnastics formerly had.
Very interesting.if you only watch every couple of years you wonder why the performances look so different these days.
The 90s was the best decade for pretty much everything, outside gymnastics included. Maybe not 90s hairstyles. But everything else.
The fact that 2 boring and tiny little jumps would get you the same points as 4 back whatever’s would do, is just beyond me.
Gina Gogeans' boring bean routines come to mind.
Whoever wrote that code need to be drug tested and ban from the sport
period
I saw one gymnast get around it by putting their hand down for one of the back handsprings.
Gymnastics has become such a tactical, robotic, cold sport. God, I miss the 80's and 90's. Routines were so much more creative back then.

I think the Wolf Turn is one of the least attractive moves on beam or floor. It may be difficult, but I wish it would go away.
How did we determine the difficulty though?
@@KatieLHall-fy1hw Have you see vox video on wolf turns?
And the wolf leap is 2nd most unattractive move
Wulfe turns need to go away again!! The flailing of the arms is not showing any sort of control on that piece of vocabulary.
I think it looks awkward and ungainly. Was just complaining about it this week watching the Paris 2024 games.
I think the older way made them look flightless. Like they were almost floating. It was beautiful. Nowadays they all look so heavy. I don’t mean their weight. I mean just the way they move.
Yes! Especially the handstand holds
I think the arabesque landings definitely added to this. I miss them.
I agree. I think there's a lack of grace today. The movements used to be more fluid and now its clunky. I actually prefer watching the more fluid movements, even if they're simpler.
Agree! And some Biles fans would say, "It's not ballet," when it's called artistic gymnastics for a reason. I think they should create a new category called "acrobatics" where they totally skip the grace and art.
@@mauriciohuaman9688wait what is the men’s gymnastic call again? Tumbling gymnastics? Ah no, 🤔
Put the ARTISTIC back in ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS
Oh yes please!!!!
Yes mawma!!
Exactly!!
It’s all about points now it’s lame
Yup
I miss the balance elements and POINTED TOES!!!!
No offense but are US gymnasts not taught to point their toes? It’s so noticeable. Maybe it doesn’t matter anymore 🤷♀️
You mean you dont like crunchy toes lol
@@mmurphyCHC some either aren't able to point them fully due to foot anatomy or they just don't really bother since difficulty and consistency is more favored now. There are some that do though like Konnor McClain and Shilese
@@murasakino101I wonder if it’s a true anatomical difference, or they just didn’t start practicing early enough.
I’ve never seen a female chinese gymnast who can’t point her toes, and I’ve seen only a few (though it’s become more common) Russian gymnasts who can’t. Either they don’t accept children into their schools who don’t have good arches or they just know how to train it.
@@kamilaford5752 I think it's both. When I was doing gymnastics classes as a kid, I tried to point my feet as far as I could get them and my coach would always push me too as well, but I could never get them to be as perfect as someone with an arch since I'm flat-footed lol. I will say though, that I don't think it's taught as much as other skills in American gymnastics today since there're a lot of gymnasts who don't try to point them at all and giving up a few tenths for flexed feet probably isn't a big concern for them
Hip circles are a lot more interesting to view than the current trend of just laying down on the beam and kicking your legs in the air.
Hip circles looked like one of the biggest safety risks in the video. Many gymnasts did the skill with less speed and full control, but a few landed hard on their vital organs. I remember a similar skill being banned on the uneven bars. I agree that the current version of touching the beam is lackluster at best, but at least it's safe.
I pretty much ALWAYS LOOKED AWAY on hip circles. I never saw the point or the artistry, ugh.
AND WHILE WE'RE AT IT.
Everyone seems to criticize wolf turns all the time. I think these elements require extreme flexibility, balance, and strength. I'm not sure where the moaning geared up. In my opinion, it must have been a case of a mass accumulation of peer assumptions rather than any actual careful analysis of the skill. After all, it's still in the Code of Points, right?
Not
@@karaamundson3964I think the majority of those who don't like wolf turns just think they are not very pleasing to look at. We do not doubt the level of difficulty or that wolf turns don't deserve the points they give. I dislike them because they can't be linked to other elements.
I actually believe they devalued the in the early 200s because of the risk of injury to the pelvis and internal organs. They were basically added in to meet the requirement of coming low to the beam
I miss the handstands. Such strength and grace . Love to see them comeback.
I've always loved watching Kim Zmeskal do her handstand shown at 1:50 in this video. The perfect strength and control to do that is more enticing and exciting to see than yet another wolf turn.
I wish they placed more value on skills that truly require precision, poise, and control on the balance beam.
Agree!
So lower the skill ceiling so everybody gets 100%?
In other words, make it easier than it is now? Everybody gets a trophy?
When you learn about things like the totally needless removal of the arabesque skills from the code, it's hard not to believe that the people writing the code just really hate grace and originality.
I'm not against skills landing in arabesque, but in the 2006-08 era people were doing 10 similar skills in the same routine lol. Aerial walkover, front kick-over to arabesque, front tuck... and then aerial cartwheel, piked side somi (this skill also disapeared after 2008), tucked side somi... It was really repetitive imo.
They are turning women's gymnastics into men's gymnastics, slowly but surely
@@kris78787Imagine not wanting a sport you are a fan of to evolve.
Genuinely strange
Stop using the word “grace” to insult the women of gymnastics of today and by the women of gymnastics I mean Simone because we all that’s who you people are pandering to whenever you make comments like this.
@@Reikyellah Wow, wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? I love Simone, and I love power gymnasts in general. God forbid that we encourage and reward a vareity of styles in the sport.
I actually dont mind tumbling on beam. I think the main thing that hurt beam was the way they changed a lot of connections values. Up until the 2008 code, it was one of the last codes where gymnasts were able to combine balance skills, tumbling, and unique connections. Since a lot of those connections aren't rewarded anymore, beam has just become formuliac. I also wish there was a higher incentive for mounts and that wolf turns were WAY less frequent
Edit: sorry if I had a lot of errors before. Was half asleep and my English declined at times lmao
2008 was the start of the open code so people didn't take advantage of the code. As long as CV exists, gymnasts don't care about turn and "handstand".
@@cocoroni1031I disagree, some gymnasts do that. Example like Chinese routines aerial+rulfova
Yes I agree, the changing acro series, but the pause between skills in the same acro shouldn't have any bonus.
@@tadg2003 my point is CV is contrary to incentive for turn / handstand. The combo has nothing to do with what I said.
@@cocoroni1031 you're right. If there's a minimum turn requirement, of course gymnasts are gonna go for the easiest turns-especially if they struggle with them. Same with leaps. Everyone does the same split jump combos since they're easier for most gymnasts and are rewarded well. Can't blame them since beam is already a nerve-wracking apparatus
I'm sick to death of all of these wolf turns. Ugh! Every routine looks the same now
Because FIG loves wolf turn and make exceptions for wolf turn. Shilese and Jade don't do wolf turn on beam so they are penalized on D score.
If you fall on the beam during a turn, you will get a standard fall deduction. But if it is a wolf turn, it will just be "lack of balance -0.3".
FIG just loves to promote this abomination.
I agree.
@@cocoroni1031 why do u say that, literally the hardest beam routine right now doesn't have a wolf turn.
@@tadg2003 I’m talking about all arounders whose specialty isn’t beam. They don’t have much element choice.
You can add tons of leaps and jumps on a beam. Doesn’t guarantee you hit nor execute well because beam is beam.
I wish they got a bonus for a difficult mount (just sitting on the beam is such a snooze fest and generates NO enthusiasm), wish they had a handstand requirement, wish they awarded originality in some way. Wish they’d actually lower Wolf turn values or DEDUCT for the crazy arm balance checks since they are the opposite of “artistic”.
Yea, like the dismount, give them .2 bonus for doing a D or higher mount. 🙌
The wolf turn deduction exists, lol. Like most gymanst have at least 0.3 in deductions.
@@tadg2003 Yeah but do they ever deduct? It would logically follow that the absolute infection of those elements in routines today means they are worth more than they should be. (Just like the Onodi & variants are under valued because they’ve disappeared). To my very untrained eyes, they seem to be immune from ridiculously strict judgment that every other move is.
But I’m also just a spectator that’s learning. I’m tired of seeing these wobbly moves.
@@plp666 I would probably be enough, if the mount has to be within the counting elements. Although I also wouldn't mind the bonus
Gymnasts now are punished in D score for not doing a wolf turn on beam and floor. They can make wolf turn disappear by enforcing shape requirement like the L turns.
I think the biggest problem are connections
They really limit skills gymnasts can perform to get points
Would love to see a balance element back in there.
I do wish we could see more variety and less strictly tumbling routines. The thing that made tumblers on the beam so interesting back in the day is that it was their speciality.
Shawn Johnson can do a full in and still look light. But to make EVERY modern gymnast be similarly acrobatic now is crazy. Theres no individuality.
It's not as much the skills I miss but more the good form and execution as well as uniqueness of gymnasts. Until 2008, gymnast had various options to compose a beam routine and all generations trained until 2004 were trained to achieve perfect 10s. Now, there is literally a new META in gymnastics every quad that everyone tries to get the best at. Gymnast don't construct a routine around their strength, they try to do the one and only most point effective routine and combinations and try to execute them as cleanly as possible. The CoP just reduces the value of things and gymnastics are stuck with no alternative but to all do a Nabieva, a wolf turn, full in dismount and a Cheng. Amanar gone, front walkover acro series gone, full pirouettes combos gone, change of direction acro series gone, counter Salto tumbling gone, twist combinations series on floor gone and so on. They just keep reducing the options to get high D-scores and everyone just ends up doing the same things. There seems to be a trend of FIG to promote power gymnasts over technical gymnasts, as if being technical shouldn't be rewarded over someone that has more power.
Donatella doesn't promote power gymnasts. When she's in charge, she makes big tumblings and acrobatic elements useless. Non-power gymnasts are just not competitive enough even with her help.
I miss everything in gymnastics. It used to be so graceful!
Exactly! It used to be about grace and agility, now it's just about power moves. Beam has become pretty boring now. It seems after 2012, gymnastics haven't been the same.
Same. This really hurts me as I've loved gymnastics my whole life, but I don't even recognise it anymore. It's like watching bodybuilders do extreme tumbling. Where is the grace and artistry? Where is the balance on the balance beam? Where is the musical expression? Where is the femininity and elegance that used to be so mesmerising😭 I am so sad but I've fallen out of love with gymnastics😢
@@hazelo4424 😥
@@hazelo4424same, they've taken the femininity out of women's gymnastics and made it very masculine, even the female gymnasts are built like tanks now.
Balance beam routines used to be a lot more elegant, graceful and original. Now they all look exactly the same.
I’ve always hated hip circles on beam. But we need to bring back a BALANCE element on a BALANCE BEAM.
The grace and elegance has long gone. It’s all very boring to watch these days.
Yes watching a triple double of floor is extremely boring compared to holding handstands and pointed toes.
Literally no one believes that
@@LiLLaLa707If Simone is allowed to do holding handstands then yes, it would be less boring, truth
@@LiLLaLa70750 years from now we'll be able to make robots that do all that. What will be the point then, after you've removed all those artistic, human elements? We might as well watch the robots, I bet they'll tumble even better than Simone.
I absolutely hate the wolf turn. Even when the gymnast is gracious it always looks ugly. Not to mention how not creative beam routines have become.
great video summary! I liked the fact that it included which years certain elements were more popular and explained exactly why they aren't today
The 4 pass series are worth the same or less as 2 little jumps??? Who tf is writing the code….
I love all the handstand elements! I wish there were more of those.
I liked the beam routines from the 90's 3 layouts in a row and a handstand
I'd like to see some originality especially with the mounts.
The handstands, esp with the extreme back arch, showcased strength, elegance & balance. They were always so breathtaking to me.
I also loved the more complex mounts & the longer runs of tumbling.
Now we're stuck with super-ungainly wolf turns & weird inelegant jumps, ugh. Tho I do appreciate the strength & power of current gymnasts.
Let's bring back straight legs and pointed feet. Also, just walking, sitting and laying on the beem sideways should not count as choreography: it shouldn't be obvious that you HAD to put that segment into the routine. Make something with it: be creative, be... artistic?
One of my favorite things gymnasts would do as they got up from beam was to sit at an angle and do two kicks while lifting the opposing arm and finishing with the'leg pointed while smiling. It was an eastern European thing. 😂
@@monica012077 they knew how to point their feet and knew how to make a turn look beautiful. I am amazed by the fact that American gymnasts can't spot to save their their lives.
@@idonotknow8503 Even back then I literally only followed Shannon Miller, the Romanians, Ukrainians, Russians, and the Chinese team. 92 and 96 were difficult because they're were so many amazing gymnasts not on the American team lol.
Why? It looks dumb. I mean, I think the idea that little girls are not the only ones that can compete is a good thing no? Perverts
I think that straight legs and pointed feet became less comon because the sport lost a much of the ballet influence that it once had. Just look at the old routines like Olga Korbut, it used to have many pieces of coreography that seemed like actual ballet steps. And ballet requires pointed feet, straigh legs, good posture in general and good finalizations, it doesn't matter how high you jump or how many turns you can do in ballet if your finalization is poor or your feet, legs, hips and back are not in the right place... And that's why I think ballet should never be considered a sport, because it goes beyond just points and code values
The side beam dismount looks prettier.
All of them as they were all VERY ARTISTIC!!! And that element is just as important as the acrobatics!
I hate the jumps in modern beam, and the wolf turns. They're ugly and boring and no gymnasts really succeeds in making them look easy and elegant. Bring back exciting mounts and handstands holds!
Hate is a strong word. Just turn off the TV.
@@karaamundson3964 wow you're so sensitive it must be difficult for you to even go outside. I literally didn't even say I hate a person, I just said I hated a movement that gymnasts do. @@karaamundson3964 You could also turn off the internet, if you can't handle a perfectly normal opinion from a stranger. People are entitled to hate, and say it, every f*ecking move they want, without you wanting to police them. Get a grip.
So make the sport easier? 🤔
@asog88 make it where it can be done with precision at least. It's sloppy now.
I love the handstands and arabesques!
If I see one more gottendamn wolf turn ever again…I’ll just roll my eyes and put up with it? Bleh.
More skills that showcase balance and control!
I agree. Balance beam routines seem to have become just a different version of floor exercise.
The acrobatic mounts have been coming back in a big way this quad, I've seen way more in the last three years than I had in the eight or so years before that!
Do a video on how uneven bars has basically evolved into men's high bar
If they aren’t going to do more than a simple handstand hold and release on the lower bar they should just go to high bar like the boys.
A) The skill at 4:03 impressed me more than any other balance beam routine I've ever seen.
B) I thought I didn't like balance beam compared to floor and uneven bars because it doesn't make people look... supernaturally good, like they do on the others? Like standing, doing a skill that lands kinda heavily with a thud, wobbling a little... it just doesn't look impressive to a casual observer. But these old routines are lovely! They make the gymnasts look graceful (like a cat is graceful) and strong and coordinated.
It’s definitely not better. There are some wonderful beam routines now but it used to showcase an athletes flexibility and also routines used to be a lot more unique. Also turns have been devalued and capped at E. An Okino should be at least be an F skill.
Is it just me who loves beam hip circles? The wolf turn is way less aesthetically pleasing
I don't see why you can't have both. They should give gymnast more options instead of forcing them to all do the same moves.
YES!!! 🙌 I also love the Back Hip Circles!! They fun, unexpected and add rhythm 🥁 change to the routine! MORE BACK HIP CIRCLES ⭕️. Perhaps they could receive an upgraded tenth or two. 🤔 👍
I never liked HCs and always looked away. WTs, on the other hand, require full-body flexibility, strength, balance, and agility.
Somehow, people got it into their heads that they didn't like these extremely difficult moves.
Maybe it's because none of those who can't do them feel left out?
I can't even do a cartwheel, but I love all gymnastics (except for hip circles, sorry!).
@@karaamundson3964 People don't like wolf turns because most of them are ugly. How often do you see a wolf turn where the gymnast is in full control, with her chest and leg up throughout the turn, with graceful arms and without any changes in the depth of the squat? Even Simone Biles, who excels at wolf turns (she has been known to perform quintuple wolf turns in training), often makes small mistakes. If not even Biles can be depended upon to perform perfect wolf turns, what hope is there for other gymnasts?
Coaches used to tell gymnasts not to perform skills in competition unless they could perform them perfectly. Falls were rare. These days gymnasts chuck skills with several built-in deductions, and falls have become completely normal. The sport really is growing uglier.
@@karaamundson3964 I don't care how difficult they are, you can't convince me that that poop squat position is elegant or graceful in any way. It's supposed to be ARTISTIC gymnastics, after all.
I really miss handstands on beam it was always a favorite element. Just like all the gorgeous spirals in figure skating . I love the big moves and the quad jumps in figure skating, but over time, in both gymnastics and figure skating, we've lost the artfulness in these sports, and that's a shame IMO.

Former 70's-80's gymnast here.
..... It used to be such a beautiful sport..... 😢
They have become powerhouses with little grace
Me too, I loved my gymnastics back then, my favourite on the beam was Natalia Shaposhnikova ❤
I haven’t followed gymnastics closely, ever. Always liked it when it was on, though. Was wondering why I had become so “meh” about the beam in my old age. This video perfectly explains it. Watching the old videos, I am so impressed, like I used to be. It was beautiful, and showed insane balance and strength, especially in the slow measured movements. When the narrator said people complain that today’s routines look like a floor routine on a beam, I thought, “THAT’S what it is! It does look exactly like another floor routine, but they can’t jump as high because they have to land on beam.”
I would argue (and it shouldn't be an argument-its so obvious) that the entire beam exercise is a skill in balance. It's not the same as tumbling on the floor because you have to balance with your tumbling on a 4 inch wide surface. Doing a scale or a handstand with a split is not as hard as doing tumbling or leaps, balance-wise. We were doing scales on the balance beam at age 4 in lower levels prior to elite and pressed handstands were something I was working on at 8 years old. Elite skills are harder.
Right. I never understood how people say there's no balance elements when they have to land on a 4" platform. By their logic, male gymnasts with practice should be able to do it as well because it's just tumbling. A lot can't though because their balance isn't good enough to do it.
Is it ever explained why rules are changed, value of elements are changed or banned? Or do the people in charge just say ," you can no longer do this or that and we've lowered the value of this move", without explanation? I have always wondered what causes them to change what moves are no longer important. For example WHY would they feel the need to minimize flexibility and strength in favor of more tumbling tricks. Why not have routines with BOTH? I bet the gymnasts would love to bring some of those old school moves back. But they can't because of the rules and lower scores.
I miss the full twisting back handspring swing down. I always thought it was such a beautiful skill to watch.
I think there was a lot more variety in the past. It’s like there is a formulated routine these days!
Something that's often overlooked in elite, because it's about basic elements:
I wish they would make split jumps, leaps and sissonnes worth the same. Either all A or all B, but split jumps are really not more difficult than a split leap or a sissonne.
While those are usually not in the counting elements of an elite routine, split jumps are often used for connections. So a side effect of all being B elements would probably be more variety.
As a former ballet dancer, it's hard enough to hold an arabesque on ground at ninety degree angle. I would not want do on a beam.
The back handspring triple layout stepout was so awesome back in the day, and needs to be brought back.
I thought it was just me that noticed the beam routines seem so repetitive and have little to no lasting memory now whereas watching decades older routines felt so lively and satisfying. They feel rushed and with all sports it appears athletes don’t always get the best training/development anymore.
I don’t wish to downplay the skill required, but I wish gymnastics still had more grace, almost as if acrobatic ballet.
8:49 twisting side dismount by gymnast in purple is sick, simply genius
I actually like hip circles.
YES!!! 🙌 I also love the Back Hip Circles!! They fun, unexpected and add rhythm 🥁 change to the routine! MORE BACK HIP CIRCLES ⭕️. Perhaps they could receive an upgraded tenth or two. 🤔 👍
I always thought hip circles on the beam looked awkward because the beam is a rectangle not round. Unlike a hip circle on the bar where the gymnast goes around in a fluid motion, the poor girl hits the beam with a thud and the momentum is often broken up.
Great video! I know some gymnastics lingo, but not very much, so thank you for giving time to the different types of stunts and sequences with multiple video clips so we could get to know them and understand what you were talking about.
Agreed
I'm not involved in gymnastics at all, but I remember watching it during the Olympics and always marvelling at the girls. Now when I watch it, it looks like they are thunking across the beam and floor. Nothing very graceful about it anymore.
If I never see another wolf turn again, it will be too soon. Even when done flawlessly, it's just awkward.
Incredible work in this vídeo.
The artistic in gymnastics is more and more discouraged.
Artistic Gymnastics is becomming more and more acrobatic, and the exercises all the same.
Sometimes when i see men's gymnastics it seems that i'm seeing compulsory numbers over and over again.
Although the dificulty has incressed, the artistic part as gone out of style, wich is a pity
This is not true on beam lol. The CV rule on beam basically kills all big acrobatics. Only leaps and jumps (and a couple of basic aerial) can milk CV.
I miss old school gymnastics so much! I honestly don’t enjoy watching anymore 😢 there is no more grace or artistry left
Same. I grew up watching Shannon Miller and Dominique Dawes, now that's real artistic gymnastics.
They’ve gutted the artistic side and going for bigger, dangerous tricks. The routines all look the same and are boring to watch.
It is ugly now! Do not watch.
Gymnastics used to be so graceful and beautiful to watch.
Based on the comments, most people did not actually listen to the video. You need an audience. Gymnastics cost more than it was worth. It just started getting noticed in the last decade outside of the Olympics. They just stated the scoring format didn't allow for certain things or just wasn't worth the energy it took a gymnast to complete. Art is in the eye of the beholder. I like fluid motion. However, it takes longer and, as in most things, doesn't keep attention when it comes to entertainment value outside of being super simplistic. Furthermore, as humans, we compete with time. What can we do better? How can we make it different? What are we capable of? I can't wait to see what 5he future holds for gymnastics moving forward.
Everyone is all about Simone, and where she is a powerhouse, she is inadvertently changing women's gymnastics. She is doing these difficult powerful routines and due to the difficulty is winning by points even if she doesn't do them perfectly and the traditional beauty of women's movements in gymnastics are being left behind so others can compete with her. I prefer the tradition mixed a bit of the new but not everything needs to be triple pikes, huge flips, and wolf turns. They all look the same now with no unique or signature style.
Its almost like gymnastics has turned into cheerleading. All these crowd pleasing tumbling and powerhouse moves that people cheer because it looks cool instead of the technical, flowing, effortless feminine movements that make them look like they are floating.
Yes!! Boy oh boy! I couldn't have said it better. This is my opinion too but I can never articulate it clearly without sounding all anti-Simone. Thanks so much! I admire her strength and power but I'm not sure how she is improving the elegance in gymnastics.
Is it her or she adapted to the code of points? Is there were bonuses for other elements would she do them? I think so. Each generation has changed how we perceive women's athletic capabilities. Blame it on the "code of points" that put into "formula" how to "win."
@zelloyello6303 it's her. She has like three or four very difficult moves named after her. If she didn't perform them, then those moves wouldn't be accepted and performed by others. I see what you are saying but when Simon is still winning by a large margin even tho she never sticks a landing (she always takes huge steps or even falls completely, but still wins) there is something wrong with that. She looks more like a cheerleader to me than a gymnast. However, these are just my opinions, and they mean nothing in the larger scheme of gymnastics.
@@turc01Once you said she "never" sticks a landing, I knew this was gonna be a wild take. Does she go out of bounds more often than she should? Absolutely. But she DOES stick landings. You can look at compilations of her routines and see this so never is already not true. But also this video you're commenting on very clearly lays out how changes to the code of points have affected what moves are and aren't worth it or how changes effectively banned certain moves. And a lot of the most impactful changes happened as Simone was in her most formative years as a gymnast. Simone is 27 years old. The move towards increased difficulty preceded her. With her power, she just capitalized on it
Finally someone said it. Could agree more.
All power but feels like a ton of bricks. I saw a routine by Olga Korbut yesterday -she floats, as if she isn't even trying. Sigh.
I do miss handstand holds and other slow balance/strength/control skills, and definitely miss the quad acro series! But I understand why things change, and tumbling also displays balance. I don't miss the arabesques, for some reason I never liked ending a skill with that.
No es el mismo tipo de equilibrio. Muchas personas pueden hacer volteretas con velocidad, sin embargo no tienen suficiente fuerza, control y equilibrio para ejercicios lentos.
I'd LOVE to see the US do the angled handstand (head over shoulders and body ALMOST PARALLEL to ground) on BOTH beam AND floor!! It's an incredible demonstration of upper body strength for females!! I was doing these with my legs straight and together on the floor when contemplating competing in the fitness category.
I'd LOVE to see the elite females show more upper body strength/balance, using a skill the men would do, on either their beam routine or on the floor!! I know they're capable of it!!
They’ve taken the art out of artistic gymnastics. It’s all about power and tumbling giant tricks.
Handstands are what bought me to gymnastics they were so beautiful
Bring back 4 pass series….bring the excitement back to beam!
I miss seeing more complicated mounts, like the layout step out. I also would like to see the quad series coming back, as you don't see this being performed anymore.
Handstand and flexibility and amplitude elements.
Please bring back all of these.
Idk about naming individual elements but I miss the grace and delicacy of the beam. The floor and horse allow for power. I remember watching the gymnastics of the 70’s. Lovely. Graceful.
This one of my favorite elements in gymnastics. I can't believe Oana Ban wasn't featured here!
I loved the long lines and high arched, pointed-toe "ballet feet" of the 80s and 90s. The tricks were just as difficult, if not more so, than today's routines - but the attention paid to length, line and grace made the old-time gymnastics much more aesthetically pleasing to watch, at least from my point of view.
Today, I find men's gymnastics and women's rhythmic gymnastics actually more enjoyable to watch than the standard women's gymnastic events.
I love the hand stands , especially mid skill to hold. Also, the skill landing in arabesque.
Definitely more beautiful and graceful before with the hand stands. Quad series were really awesome also.
Where are the strength moves like planchettes? I would count off tenths for the flailing of the arms in the wulfe turns.
Wolf turns are by far the most unattractive thing ive ever seen in the sport. I really hadnt watched gymnastics since the 90s and i dont remember them existing back then. Who decided they were a good idea to include?? Ive yet to see one gymnast make them look elegant. Even Simone Biles looks like a figure skater on dry land trying to do circles without her skates when she performs them. Gymnasts arent on ice with skates or a stage with ballet shoes. They arent meant to just turn with barefeet like that. It looks so clunky. Please make it stop.
wolf spin is incredibly difficult but not fun to watch .. I'd like to see the more elegant vintage moves make a comeback
Gymnastics today is so umbalanced. Before, there was a good combination of all basically required elements like difficulty, flexibility, artistry, execution and creativity. Today is (still) heavily charged on difficulty.
Bring back compulsories and we'll see a return of artistry, execution, and good technique of the basics
@@jimmylaremore6234Bring back compulsories and the sport will die.
I like the strength demonstrated by the handstands. I can't believe that one young woman supported her weight on one arm. (Was that in this video or in another video I watched before this one that showed the history of gymnastics from 1936 to 2021?) That was pretty amazing since women don't have nearly as much upper body strength as men so it's impressive to see a woman doing that. Controlled strength is different from power (which I like on the floor routines), and balance is an important element, which is appropriate for the BALANCE beam!
Thank you! Very interesting!
I miss creative beam mounts
Incroyable 😮! Je suis admirative devant toutes ces gymnastes et leurs promesses. Dommage que l'on ne puisse pas traduire les explications. Cela me fruste 😢
Have you noticed how in gymnastics these days, they kinda rush through the fancy moves, like they're just itching to get to the flips and crazy acrobatics? It's like they're not really feeling the artistic stuff and are all about the stiff high-flying action.
yes its all about acrobats now
I totally agree with you! It's the same in figure skating! The old style from the 1990's was beautiful to watch! Skill, elegance, artistry. Skating wasn't ONLY about jumps back then! Gymnastics and figure skating have become boring to watch. Bring back the elegance and originality and actual skills! Those sports are beautiful and I'm so very proud of our athletes in them and I wish them well, but I wish things were as they were in the 1990's or around that time.
I think the code of points was adjusted to favor the powerful Americans as opposed to the graceful Eastern Europeans. But you can't say that, because Simone Biles
@@purpurina5663 rules definitely favor Simone Biles. Rules and roids help her,
The Phillips should return. Gorgeous!
Can we just get rid of the wolf turn? Please?!
The grace and balance of a routine has been Replaced by harder tricks with a rushed routine. Leave tumbling on the floor exercises.
Strength skills must be elevated again. My mouth would drool for a girl who could do a plange or mount the beam with pommel flares. And if a strength skill is planned, more time should be added. The wolf turn is so tired.
Absolutely fascinating
Jordan Chiles had a really cool mount in ncaa that was a handstand split, idk what to call it but it was SO Cool to see.
I think the mount should count towards the score and they should bring back the hold element requirement. They never let it run its course and that could have brought us more handstands.
The 8:47-8:50 dismount is fucking gorgeous!
7:57-8:00 dismount was also beautiful!
Las rutinas en la barra eran con mayor grado de dificultad, más vistosas, mucho mejores que ahora al momento de conectar elementos , hoy se ven más simples...
Mounting the beam by series of flips is both impressive but very dangerous
Gymnasts should be allowed to replace complex torso choreography with handstands mounts
2:43 looks very cool, gymnasts should do that again imo
It changes drastically. Today’s beam look all routine are the same🤭😅
1:35 I know very little about gymnastic, but I think it should award extra points on difficult.
Casual gymnastics watcher here. Can someone explain the "rebounding rule" please? I hear it mentioned a lot (very negatively) as a reason why some serieses or combinations don't count or something which limits creativity in routines. Just curious.
