Yea, I get the fear of them but it’s just irrational for the most part.

@@Jakob_23 thats just ridiculous. When do you think that gonna happen?
I love that she straight up says "unlikely" or "probably not" when she encounters some weird scenarios instead of "that absolutely does not happen ever, at all". Nature is no stranger to "unlikely" or "improbability" and I really appreciate it when scientists respect that.
You missed the best one, the straight up NAWW
In science, especially in the scientific literature and especially among nature sciences like Biology, words that imply certainty or that are too incisive tend to be a big no no. After all, science isn't a tool used to achieve absolute truths but to get as close as possible to what is more likely to be the underlying truth.
Only a sith deals in absolutes.
Get over yourself 🙄🙄🙄
I appreciated that too!! Because it’s much a more accurate way to talk about nature.. nature is FULL of anomalies and contradictions and I love that she has the scientific mindset of “well just cause we’ve never SEEN it happen or recorded it doesn’t mean there won’t be that ONE shark.”

For sure. I scuba dive with sharks every time i can but crocodiles scare me, I feel like they are less predictable and will try to hunt a human

The idea of hammerheads being afraid of bubbles is the cutest thing ever
A hammerhead is just wondering around the ocean when suddenly, a stream of bubbles appears, the hammerhead gets startled and asks the shark suckers (they look like baby sharks) to block the bubbles to make him less scared

"Shark bites are not good for you." - Melissa Marquez
Wise words.
Deep Blue Sea is actually my favorite shark movie, the Sharks were mutated so nothing near compared to a real shark, like in Jurassic Park where it has been told so many times the Dinosaurs aren't like their ancestor because they had to fill in the dna witb existing animals.
Mutated ?? They are mako sharks
Yeah it was neat that they made them much smarter within the movies plot.
@@tonilouisealexander8337 Yes. But the movie plot explains that they were made larger so their brains could be larger and had more of the substance they wanted to extract. This had the side-effect of increasing their intelligence.
They weren't mutated at all. The protein compact in their brains were harvested. Doing this had a side effect - it increased their intelligence.

No matter which genre of horror movie, the same rule applies to all of them 'don't be the slowest'
Earlier this year we were out to swim with some (smaller) sharks at the North Shore on O‘ahu, Hawaii. Just when I wanted to get back on the boat, suddenly I noticed that all smaller sharks were gone, which was strange. Then someone on the boat yelled "Tiger Shark in the back".... so this 13-14 Tiger shark is swimming right at me to say "hi". I have to admit that for a second my heart stopped beating, because it much bigger than the other sharks. However, I stayed calm, looked right at it. The Tiger came close, then noticed that I am not the best looking food at this ocean buffet and then slowly swam away. I was so happy that I was able to see such an amazing creature in it's natural environment (without a cage or attracting it with blood). It is strange that later when I showed my GoPro video to my friends, most of them were so scared, by something which was one of the most beautiful moments in my life.
"You don't have to worry about an ocean filled with sharks. Instead you should be worried about an ocean without them" I love what Melissa said at the end of the video :-)

I love that she's doing more teaching than just ragging on movies. I'm actually learning stuff here👍
As a Floridian who’s been by the beach my whole life I’ve had numerous encounters with sharks. They really are cool animals to observe. I’ve never seen someone get bit in 25 years, although when I was like 9 years old I was at the beach with my family and a friend and my friend was walking out of the water and I noticed a 3 foot shark swimming right behind him. It the only time I’ve screamed shark at the beach 😅. Most attacks happen in shallow water because they get you confused with some form of other prey it feeds on normally.
My biggest issue with shark movies is that the shark always spends a lot of energy trying to get the human. I’ve never heard of any animal spending more energy than it’s meal gives it.
This is actually one of the reasons I like shark movies, I find it hilarious that they create these sharks that instantly develop a vendetta against the characters
@@ericsmith1878 there's a whole whale floating around just begging to be eaten, yet the shark constantly risks its own well being to eat a tiny human. Its like the shark knows its in a scary film🤣
The shark in The Shallows might as well have been a serial killer.
Ever heard of fox going on a rampage in a chicken coop? Or wolves killing more sheep than they eat?
Actually its not abnormal lol there was a movie (can't remember the title) where it was set in the great barrier reef and a great white was hunting the people in the water despite the multitude if fish and seal within the area and it is a true story 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️

About the size of the makos in Deep Blue Sea (it was my favourite movie when I was little, I know too much about this movie), the scientist bred/genetically engineered them to be bigger so their brains would end up larger. It's why it's bigger than regular mako sharks
I was obsessed with Deep Blue Sea!! I’m only 2 years older than the movie, and for some reason the TV channels in my country *loved* to air this what seems like every other week 😂😂 It was my favourite thing to watch as a child, but for years I knew it as just “Deep” 😂
Wrong. They were harvesting the protein compact in their brains. By messing with the protein compact - the side effect was the sharks' intelligence level increased.
@@kristenslice561, it is said in the movie that they changed the genetics of the sharks.
Besides splashing attracting sharks panicking like that leads to people being drowned. It's like how people get trampled to death when there's a panic on land. I was very nearly killed by someone when there was a panic in the water. People grab you and try to claw over you to get to the shore/edge. They even climb on top of you.
Open water rescue, you have to be very careful how you approach someone that is struggling in the water. They will drown you if they are in a panic.
I did rescue swimming training and the buddy who was acting as the drownee had the job of being as eratic and impossible to save as possible. In a panic people dont even register that they are literally almost killing their rescuer

I've always been so passionate about sharks. My mom told me how one time I pissed off the staff at the aquarium in the shark show because I was constantly correcting everything they said... never lost my passion for them almost 20 years later. I'm not scared of sharks, I just respect them. When in the ocean I fully appreciate that as a human I am no longer the apex predator, and I am not in my environment anymore, I am in THIERS.
Also, love how she casually says she's never been bitten by a shark but she's been chomped by a croc.. Miss Ma'am I think I'd rather take the shark...
“Sharks aren’t scary.”
5 minutes later
“Remember, it’s sometimes the shark you don’t see that you need to be worried about.” 😳
i mean technically those 2 things dont contradict eachother.
She’s so laid back I could listen to her talk about this stuff all day.

Great video! I loved it, and the presenter was great! Sorry to hear you were hurt by the crocodile, be safe and stay safe. It is good to know what is real or what is not! I will watch this again and again.

I would love to see a shark expert react to possible Megaladon sightings to determine what shark it is or the reasons people believe it's a Megaladon
They have the perfect person reviewing these. Marques is also known as the mother of sharks because not only is she a shark scientist but she is also a big fan of their preservation efforts and as pretty much a PR person for them. She’s told the story numerous times in interviews and articles. Look up her name.
I think I actually saw the video, but I can’t remember where. I’m not sure if it was part of a discovery shark week. I remember her being very very upset that it was “her fault” that the crew had to leave to take her to the hospital! Dude, you need stitches already!😳
I should specify, they didn’t show her being bitten, but I remember her saying “something’s got me!” Over the coms before the program cuts to commercial. After they show her being brought into the boat when the crocodile let her go. I’m almost positive it was discovery shark week.
kcbaby136
It was Shark Week 😊
@@kcbaby136 Using the info left in your comments I went to utube search and the first shark week related vid was her crock story. WOW, no matter how calm she remained in such a predicament I still can't believe there was no automatic death roll like we always see in the African wildlife attacts. Todays lesson, stick with Cuban crocks and live to tell about it.
Free diving requires a lot of training ... because you are walking a fine line between "hyperventilating to enrich the blood with oxygen" and also "slow and calm movements to reduce the energy/oxygen used". Some pearl divers are able to go really deep (16m or around that) in natural environments.
I’m absolutely terrified of sharks (I still watch shark movies and swim in the ocean😂) but this video I found very interesting!! thank you explaining it!
watching sharks on tv in their natural environment without being in the ocean is a good way of learning about the nature of sharks. you'll be surprised how much you learn not all sharks are harmful. like for example nurse sharks, wale sharks, basking sharks and mega mouth sharks are considered harmless to humans since wale sharks, basking sharks and mega mouth sharks are filter feeders.
I love it when people who knows things talked about their things
The opposite is too much fun?
47 Meters Down was probably one of the most stressful movies I ever watched
Yes
Yes got stoned and watched with my gf and it felt like you couldn't breathe at some moments 🤣
And confusin
The whole plot isn’t survivable, it drives a lot of people crazy. In my opinion it’s a great shark movie! It’s got lots of fear and suspense, even if it’s not an accurate representation of sharks.
Especially because one of the girls played Emma on H2O and the other one played Rapunzel on Tangled. 🤣🤣
Jaws is most definitely the reason I LOVE sharks so much! Watched it when I was little and just learned as much as I possibly could!
Thank you for your explanations!
My parents are field biologists and the "realest" part of this video for me was when she worried about losing the trackers. "Thousands of dollars, right to the ground!" is real. My parents are "appropriately afraid" of biological & environmental dangers, they are IRRATIONALLY terrified of breaking/losing their gear. 5/5 stars for this expert & this video!
Your parents are field biologists? What exactly is that, and are you a field biologist too are have you decided to do something different??
I love how passionate she is when talking about sharks, the information she's explaining was really good. She would make a great teacher. I love sharks, there is something that draws you in when you watch them.. one day I will cage dive with them..

When I was young (like 8 or 9 maybe) I lived in Yokosuka. My momma's friend used to take/ teach me sailing on a small boat. There was one time I was running my hand across the top of the water and it started to feel kinda bumpy. When I looked down at the water we were sailing through what had to be thousands of jellies.
They were mostly harmless and I was just skimming the tops of them. Even 30 years later it's still a cool memory.
