Nice vid. This is one of the most common moves I've seen at the start of a fight. Many people automatically go for the tackle for some reason and I believe learning a defense against it is a must.
I'm a classically trained boxer, with pretty good footwork, pretty fast and solid punches, but trying to maintain technique in a street fight is hard because the other person will always want to grab me by my shirt, or whatever the case may be. These videos certainly helped me get a better understanding in what to do in those situations! Thanks! Even though I'm an amateur boxer, this stuff really helped out.
***** Maybe you'll see this, maybe not. Have you ever looked back at some of your older videos and noticed something you disagree with? Not saying there's anything wrong with the ones I've seen.
Your videos really helped me! I got ina fight a couple of days ago and he's been bullying me since 4th grade. I'm in 8th grade now. But i won and used his body language to know when he was going to punch. I also used this technique in the video and it helped. Thanks alot man!.
My favorite part of your videos is you use more real energy and techniques that will actually work. Anytime I see someone in a karategi or some equivalent martial arts uniform I know it's going to be (mostly) idealized bullcrap. This is real stuff and I love it. Keep the vids coming, brother.
Keyboard Gladiator I agree with you.Elbow to the head , spine or back of the neck is the best defence against a low take down. Real self defence has no rules. Take downs are effective in MMA fights because of the rules against hitting the back of the neck, spine etc. In the street such low take downs can get you killed.
@@JackBlair2008 agreed, also, you can lean forward and grab the back of their belt/pants waist band to prevent them from causing you to fall backwards. Also you get the benefit of them possibly losing their balance and falling face first with your weight on top of them.
It's really dangerous to do this type of takedown since you're effectively breaking line of sight from above you. This won't go unnoticed by an expert.
Pay attention, people. This is how to do it. Drossos is schooling y'all. If you have superior skills you can get fancy with strikes to the head and eye-gouges, maybe even trapping... but Drossos' teaches the maximum chance failsafe works-every-time move... so that is what you should do. Kicks and knees might work.. but then they might just get you dumped on the ground. Your choice. I have only watched 3 of your vids so far and I am totally impressed. Great work. Thank you!
Dude your videos are awesome... very practical and not the other fancy bs other videos have... neck crank and face strikes are more realistic and effective than others moves... great vid
Really useful stuff. I'm presently learning how to defend against takedowns and tackles with my martial art (wing chun), and find this to be a great addition. The head twist is great stuff.
this is nice, the neck crank is very very dangerous. it can possibly paralyze or even kill. the 1st neck crank puts him down, a sharp snap in the opposite direction can be fatal
@ Nick Drossos Defensive Tactics: I've seen more people taken down by way of being more squared up as opposed to you blading yourself with your rear leg back at: 03:00. I've seen a Kenpoist (sparring with ground fighter) just angle off/pivot every time the grappler would try and change angles on him with the single leg takedown attempt (the ground fighter having a hold on his front leg). Would you agree with this stance or do you think it's just a matter of training your mind to see movement, squared up or not? I ask bc I also notice traditional striking schools don't train or haven't upgraded their defense to the shoot and takedown.
thank you for the video Nick i just hit the sub button. this seems like a great defense that could possibly work for anybody regardless of size. would much prefer doing this vs hoping my legs or weight don't give in!
Having a good sprawl is the best defense of these kinds of takedowns. Regardless of your style, Karate, Jui Jitsu, Wrestling, Muay Tai, you should practice sprawling and learn to do it effectively.
Unfortunately a situation like this happened to me before and I froze up because I didn't know what the law was in regards to self defense. Luckily I didn't get injured but now I know that I can protect myself while de-escalating the situation at the same time
Y'all talking shit where it's not needed. Not everybody is a wrestling champion ya know? I think @Nick Drossos has good advice for takedown defense. I wish he would emphasis the sprawl a little more but I could see this working. I will for sure out this into my training. I like how you had your students show the techniques again. Very good video Nick. I'm never disappointed.
This is not effective!! I’ve wrestled for 4 years and currently train bjj and can tell you it’s bs I don’t want anyone getting hurt doing bs they find on RUclips that’s why I hate Chanel’s like these look up wrestling sprawls and see how to actually counter a takedown. But I suggest you practice a few times before being confident enough to do in a street fight
Another reason you can tell it’s bs is bc he said it’s okay if they get one leg 😭 with one leg can get you a single leg, high crotch and set up a sweap while both legs only set up a double leg takedown
He could just hit an outside single and chase your knee or shelf it. And what do you mean its not that bad if he gets one leg? I assume this is if the person is not good at taking shots. Plus why do you block with your forearms, he could get underneath you real fast.
as he said, the lower you go the easier to push/hit your face into the ground. Strikes behind the ear are not sport legal but all good for low shoots on the street.
Most experienced fighters/grapplers/wrestlers will setup a takedown and "drive through you" . Also that dude has a really "weak" neck. Most wrestlers can lift you with their neck strength. Just saying... Still something to think about.
Nice. From there you can push the person away using the neck and strike the opponent in the throat or eyes. He wont try to take you down again after that.
I have no idea why i havnt sub'd. I just did. Hey Nick, where is your school located? Id like to check it out one day, when i can travel again. Jeet Kune Do philosophy makes me want to learn useful moves.
are there any places in Toronto that I can take this type of training? I've been a bouncer for 14 years and it would be good to always sharpen my skills. awesome videos!
I've always used my leverage, their momentum against them, and my elbows to defend. If the guy is bigger/heavier, if i can, i stay lower using my knees-elbows to force him to glance off me.... almost like running through a line like a running back
Good video clip as always! Myself I like the sprawl because if the opponent is very good and fast the sprawl works most of the time and the opponent will not get a grip on your legs. But in the streets you must get up as quickly as you can after your sprawl. But can you intercept as you show on the videoclip thats fine. Thank you!
As someone who has wrestled for years and currently does bjj I can confirm this is bs first he said if you get one leg it’s not that bad having one leg can get you a single leg, high Kroch, and set up a leg sweap while 2 legs can only get you a double leg. I don’t want anyone getting hurt trying to do bs so look up wrestling sprawls is you rlly wanna know but I advise you practice. And also why would you listen to wrestling/grappling advice from a boxer 😭
If, God forbid, the attacker does get a grip on you or even lift you up another really effective instant finisher is the double ear slap. Slap both ears at once or slap one while covering the other earhole. He will be stunned for at least a moment and you can finish him easy.
could I see this from a wrestlers perspective? Not to say this is not effective, but the guys i deal with in my gym have lightning fast takedowns. by the time i touch them i'm on the mat.
Your videos really helped me. i got a in a fight and won. Rumor went around saying im trained and had a black belt in blah blah blah. But anyways thanks though.
so the strength of a strong man's neck is more than the focused wrench by a determined person's whole core, waist, legs and arms? Me thinks not. Try it... oh, now you know the problem with training real fighting moves... they maim and kill. No protective equipment that works exists for the neck vs a crank. There are other defences... the eye gouge... the ear slap. No power needed to fuck up giants. MMA sucks.
larry wright not my fault you are too stupid to read. I will reword it in words maybe simple enough for even you to understand. Here we go. Are you ready? Whole body of little person stronger than neck of big person. Got it yet, dumbass?

yh when me and my mates are fooling around, if they go for a tackle you can move your bodyweight over them, thus dropping there upper body and head, so its easy to go for a guillotine. None of that would ever work. Because to stop a tackle your arms gotta be above theirs. Which will never ever happen. They always go for the tackle into a bear hug. The odds it will be a judo slam versus a normal takedown are like 90% because the goal is to slam your skull against the rocky ground. Not gain a strategic position. If you could just do this, cops would never be able to catch any badguys. They'd all be mma champs. But brute force that is beyond you will be what you face and this will break your fingers against a drunk us marine. You will get mugged from a giant crook with or without a gun. Unless they are at your weight class or below. Which will never happen on the streets then. None of this can stop a takedown. I mean if someone in your weight class or below does it. Sure this is great. Just a bit of competition. But what will actually happen is you pull up in a kia forte and some dude in a nissan armada fn slams into you and completely totals your day. Your strategy is completely useless now. Your head has struck the pavement, you're now in the icu.
"You ok?" "You ok?" "You ok?" Sounds like bullshit. The guy's a tough looking individual of course he can handle the rough stuff but you Nick must think he's a girl.
@murkleman6 Most of the people fighting on the street doesnt know shit about fighting, they just know stand up game thats all, most of the people who train something doesnt start fights on the street because they know what they are capable of.
