As a former bouncer, street fighter and later, Black Belt, I like how you include looking around once the first threat is down. While the first dude can still get up at that point, multiple attackers is a real thing, even if it's the guys girlfriend or little sister. ( I include little sister because saw a little sister go after her brothers attacker from behind... she had a hatchet and she stopped hacking him in the back because it got stuck)
Great video. I do what the Marines call, "Bends and Thursts", which is a burpee without the pushup, to practice the sprawl. It is very similar to what is demonstrated on your video. A concept that comes to mind also is "nose to toes", if you can get a hand on the back of their head and push it toward their toes they will stop; not a perfect solution to every situation but it will work in the right circumstance. I've seen it work in, of all places, major league baseball during a brawl on the field. Probably won't work on a trained grappler but on an out-of-shape ex footballer it might come in handy. I've had a person rush me twice that I can remember; one I was able to side step, and the other I sprawled, wound up on top and laid on his head until he got tired and quit. Neither incident escalated into an all out fight and that's a good thing. Lovin' your channel and content. Subscribing now.
My Krav Maga instructors taught us sprawls and the way they made us practice them with no partners was like burpees. (Sprawl practice is pretty hard on your partner.) Basically, with no partner, sprawl like you're about to get taken down and because nothing is there to brace you, you go down as though you were going to do a push up with your forearms, which is undoubtedly how you'll land in a take down defense. From there, actually _push up_ with your forearms and hop up to your feet as though you were trying to get back up. You'll notice it's a lot like a burpee. Starting out, space your reps, try not to do this without a pad or on carpet, and sprawling won't feel so alien when you have to do it. The exercise ball is a great idea to get the reps in and really understand what it is you're trying to do, but remember, there won't be a spring assist to get you back up in an actual confrontation. Like the man said, you have to train your ass off.
Great way to drill the bits that need to be muscle memory or they won't be fast enough in a real world situation. That ball technique isn't bad at all just watch out for the belly-flop to somersault, good recovery Kyle 😜
@@Selfdefensegoat Seriously thank you for what you do, I have learned more about the why to do something and less on just simply how it is done. Keep doing what you do, and we will keep training hard on the concepts you and your team delivers here 👌
@@xXScissorHandsXx that’s so great to hear!!! Keep up the training and hopefully one day you can come train with me or I can come teach where you’re at?
I enjoy your videos. You are an excellent teacher btw. I know a lot of things, but age and disability have affected me. I have 50% Disability rating from the VA and I'm in my 60s now so I can't do a lot of what I used to be able to do when I was younger and not disabled and it's frustrating. Most of my training is in the striking arts, but I had some training in Judo and Wrestling, but do to my age and disability I really don't want to grapple so I'm trying to find things that work for me now.
Thanks for your service. Yes striking arts are important for you. Trapping is much easier on the body and may give you an upper hand if your long range techniques fail.
@@OldBadger1 Maybe on the mat....if u miss ur takedown you get to try again and again until you eventually get it...off the matt in a real confrontation with a skilled opponent you will have multiple broken joints...good luck with your second attempt. Wrestlers are very vulnerable...more than they think.
MMA doesn't allow 12-6 elbows. If someone is going for that single leg or double leg and they they don't immeidately land it, they are definitely open to be knocked out. It's not allowed in MMA because it's too dangerous. You're not likely to see people going to the ground for those takedowns, or sprawling on concrete or asphalt. That shit hurts.
Everything here looks good and seems to me like solid teaching. But this wasn’t a tackle defense. This was a single leg/double leg takedown defense. There’s a difference. In a double or single leg they’re shooting in grabbing your leg or legs and putting their feet back under themselves. In a tackle they are charging in and once they hit whether it be your midsection or your legs they’ll be driving their feet. I could see a sprawl working on someone smaller if they’re trying to tackle you. But a bigger stronger guy? If they get their arms around you and are driving with their legs, especially if they got a running start, and you sprawl, then you’re still going down. It would be kind of like trying to sprawl on a sumo wrestler. Again this was great for single or double leg, but I am skeptical on how well it would work for a tackle.
I did a tackle as a kid against another kid who was taller and older. He fell of. Thankfully he is all right, but, I was worried a minutes later when I realized what happened. I was angry at the moment and did not have things clear, we were not even playing a game
Im 5'6 wrestled a guy 5'9 and went in and he sorta sprawled so i got ahold of his ribs and swung him to the side and we landed,he put me in a choke but i powered off of it
I needed to step my game up cuz this is how i lost my last fight. Other than been drunk. I wasn't prepared for the take down after i delivered a kick to the stomach
Any competent wrestler would sprawl that guy so fast and take his back instantly. I was in a martial arts gym and the level of wrestling was pathetic. Do a burpee…good explanation

So basically a wrestling sprawl to counter a single or double leg takedown.

Wrestling, BJJ, MMA, Judo

Half the battle is situational awareness...
Best defense is to not let it get that far. Use your feet to keep him from lining up to get what he needs to shoot in. Stay mobile

So what is the best way to stop someone from collapsing your legs down. When they wrap their arms around you
Is a tactical pen effective against tackle? Like a top down hammerfist attack with the tactical pen
What about full sprint tackle on pavement? I once saw a friend get in a fight as a kid and he ran full speed and tackled the guy on to the pavement.

If they take thier arms around upper body you can't.
What is wrong with stepping back or to the side?

you should drop your hips to one side. right or left. it's not good practice to sprawl center weight.

Has aikido saved you? Or the fact that you have trained and understand your body very well?
Yeah but you can do with the advantage of height
If you are fighting in real fight your not going to use MMA sprowll against a take down in the streets this is the low percentage technique.
What would you use that’s higher percent?
Sprawling can work in a 1v1 streetfight. Idk where you are getting the idea it is a low percentage technique.
