Hey, Mr. Kilmer. I have a question, if you could help me. I have a 2005 3.3L Dodge Grand Caravan. Smoke coming from under the hood, over heats sometimes, coolant leak, heater doesn't work properly, but it will work occasionally. What could be the problem, and would a radiator flush/cleaning help??? I know you're a busy man, but If you could get back to me i would really appreciate it, thank you.

Scotty I am a regular subscriber now for many years. You recommend Akebono brake pads, but I wish you would recommend the double gas shocks that you were speaking of. I know bilsteins are really good shocks and you've mentioned KYB however these only last about 50,000 miles. Honda original equipment shocks last much longer. Is there a shock besides KYB that you can recommend? Also is there a shock that really absorbs bumps and makes the car ride more smoothly than bouncing over and crashing over bumps and Imperfections in the road? I would love to see more information on this topic.

Shock absorbers do not transfer load to the opposite side of the vehicle in a turn. Shock absorbers, more properly called dampers, do one thing and one thing only; they resist/damp suspension movement. This prevents uncontrolled wheel travel due to springs (including tires) storing and releasing energy, and controls vertical body movement.

The stock shocks we're worn out in a 1979 Oldsmobile I used to own so bad that over a dip in the road it would smack the bottom against ground once maybe even two or three times and was horrible around turns rocking side to side after making a turn. So I replaced them with Monroe Nascar Sensatrac shocks. The out comes was a 100 times better shocks. The dip in the road with new shocks barrely caused the car to move up and down and the car would level out immediately after making a turn. It was a great improvement by far.

I changed over to Bilstien gas shocks and struts years ago. Great dampers, very nice ride. Last a long time. My first set started getting a little soft around 100k miles. They can also be rebuilt. They do cost more though. I remember reading Bilstein said it cost them more to make a stem seal than what other manufacturers charged for a whole shock. I thought roll or sway bars transfered energy to the other side of vehicles, not shocks. They just dampen the spring action.

He did recommend hydraulic shocks if you drive a certain way or don’t drive a certain way. Anyone who wants to drive really fast around a curve or a corner should avoid hydraulic shocks. And then he talks about the nitrogen gas and oil filled shock. There is a strong difference between the two. I thought the information about how to know if you were having a problem with your shocks and how to know if it’s time to replace them or not was very informative. So I guess that’s what the headline was talking about.
No excuses but Scotty does talk fast so it’s easy to miss information or think he’s glossing over something when really he’s quite detailed, which is how he has so many subscribers.

Installing modern bilstein monotubes with fresh coils on a 25 year old 4runner will make it ride better than it did when it was new. Everyone says the engine is the most important part of a vehicle, the first thing i mess with is the suspension.

I have a 2009 Honda accord with low mileage. I want to change the shocks and struts this spring. What do you recommend and what else should I change ( links . tire rods or anything else you think) . Also we have a Mercedes ml350 with almost 200000 miles want to do the same for that shocks and struts and anything else you think. I know you think to do work on Mercedes might be crazy but just gave it to our 16 year old son. And over the years I have done a ton a work and replaced many things so it drives great and it a good car for our son. No leaks of anything. I fix all leaks over the years so keeping the car forever.. Thanks for your help and love your videos and the information I learne .

If you work on your own car and have ever replaced the shocks or struts you can see car ID or rock auto will will sell at least two different kinds
When I do shocks and struts I always go with twin tube either Gabriel or KYB’s
    Name brand only
I’ve tried off brand and TRQ and have not nothing but issues

Love the vid Scotty but what about degraded or damaged bushings? They have a large impact on the suspension components of the vehicle! For example.
My neighbour thought his suspension was damaged - UK potholes are killers.
He forked out enough money to replace all of the suspension!
After installing he had the same issue and didn't know what to do.
Sent it to the Nissan garage and it was severely degraded bushings!
