This ABSOLUTE wickedest, most spot-on Jerry Lewis impression EVER done! The real Jerry Lewis must’ve been losing his mind the first time he saw this! It fully captures the attitude, egotism, aggression - and yes, talent - of the man. Another dollop of Martin Short genius.
I remember when I saw this decades ago growing up in Chicago. Him going off on the movie exec while in the junior sailor outfit had me cracking up! I later got a job at NBC/Burbank, CA, met Mr. Short and asked him to do his Lewis impression just for me - AND HE DID IT! Fantastic performer, Mr. Short is.
Omg, I'm dying. And just the whole arc of the sketch. Starting with the manic "this is all great!" energy, then as the evening wears on, devolving into the self-pitying lament, followed finally by the grim tearing into his music director. There were a few late Sinatra shows where we got a look behind the curtain as well.
"How long have you been an audio engineer?" "Twenty years." "Do you want to make twenty one?" - according to a pit violinist at Sinatra's Circle Star Theatre show.
@@grayforester Hey, methinks maybe Ol' Franky Blue-eyes (good friend of guys like Sam Giancana, Neil Dellacroce, Jimmy Fratianno, Carlo Gambino, Frank 'Lefty' Rosenthal, Paul Castellano, the Fischetti Bros, the Spilotro Bros. etc.) wasn't threatening the guy's livelihood... he was threatening the guy's life.
In case some people didn't get the opening joke: "Jerry with a J" (sung to the tune of Count Basie's April In Paris) is parodying Liza Minelli's "Liza with a Z" TV concert from 1972.
Yeah well he was a total genius of performing things he thought were funny, a very narrow band of comedy - and if you thought what he did was funny too, you were in for a treat, nobody did it better. Problem is, it didn't work for most people. Mostly the French. He also was very good with the technical side of filmmaking, he would be a great drama director if he wanted to...
It works because Short can sing so well. He originally wanted to be a singer for a living, according to his autobiography. His autobiography is soooo sad, but so inspirational in how he withstands all the tragedy in his life!
Depth of Steve Martin's friendship was exhibited when Short's wife, Nancy, was ill and eventually died from cancer. It's a good read == an amazing performer/man who has entertained us all so, so well.
I was a child in the early '60s. My older sister who was a teenager became a devoted Jerry Lewis fan. I have no idea why. But I've seen every one of his movies- some multiple times. His tv shows. And heard his son's music albums countless times. Thank God! she outgrew that phase of her life.
Oddly, I saw both Jerry Lewis and Martin Short on the same stage, separated by about thirty years. Lewis took his Vegas show on the road with an orchestra, opening act, singers, etc. It was actually a hell of a show, at least to my young eyes. Short, of course, was hilarious. I was hoping he would do his Lewis impression, but I guess he had retired it by then. That’s the problem with impressions- there aren’t very entertaining if the audience doesn’t know who you’re imitating. I can do a pretty good Paul Tsongas, but honestly there hasn’t been a lot of call for that since he dropped out during the primary in ‘92.
One of my favorite details is how the musical director never actually gets frustrated with Jerry - like how at 1:21, you can see him laughing along with the joke.
I am just reading Martin Short's book "I Must Say". I must say that I really didn't recognize how great he really is. I am looking up these skits now and he is great. Some Good Canadian talent we can actually stand behind and be proud of (not hang our heads and hide).
Annnnt wrong answer I can tell you guys are young he is funnier than Lewis after he smoked cigarettes he lost the high pitched voice so he was corny after Jerry's Kids but recently before his death yes Short is 200 times funnier 🤣🔥
Love this sketch! I remember it when it originally aired and was so happy it is available here. It makes me laugh a lot all over and feel good things and stuff. He is so talented. Thank you Martin Short for decades of laughter!
I like how he intersperses young Jerry (lights his thumb on fire) with older, serious Jerry (bitterly berates young studio heads who don’t know Cinderella from Hardly Working or The Errand Boy in a sailor suit) in the meanwhile musical numbers are sprinkled with French and English all while sucking on a lozenge. Genius!
A crazy rubber-legged dance and a squeaky voice: yeah, that's Jerry Lewis, all right! Martin short is brilliant, so was Jerry, all the bad stuff about him aside!

That video is as close to perfection as I will ever see in my lifetime. The only thing missing was a reference to The Day The Clown Cried.
Disaster. 1.pathetic subject..2. film crew fail. 3. Writers Lawsuit.4. Money Lost.

Particularly at the time when it aired, probably the low point of SNL.
