Thanks for this upload! Algorithm put you in my feed because I've been enjoying old SCTV episodes lately. I see you have a podcast, looks like you have some pretty good guests.
I started watching SCTV back in the mid-70s, when it was produced in Toronto at the old Global TV studio. That was before the show had ties to NBC on American TV. I think the show still holds its own even in 2023. Another overlooked comedy show from Canada was Kids in the Hall which ran for a decade on CBC.
I totally agree! When the real commercial started I assumed that it was a sketch. It’s difficult for audiences today to understand the TV world of the late 70s and early 80s. SCTV was very skilled at parodying All aspects of television. It was the television of their time the late 70s and early 80s. If you’re from that time you immediately can get the joke that they were going for.
@@johnheart6890This should be 1986 87 as it's from when "Americans Most Wanted" began. The original program yes it's from 1981 that I remember from watching it when it was first aired. I also have the Bob and Doug LP album as well which came out that same year.
40-some years ago (!) when I was 19 I always made it a point to be home to watch SCTV. I'd come home pretty high and I was afraid I'd hurt myself I laughed so hard at some of the skits.
I’m right there with you on that one man. I can remember watching the great white north and my mother asking me “Robert? What’s wrong with your eyes?“. Tombstone eyes, giggles, some really great trips.
Haven't heard the Great White North in over 30 yrs. I still always hear "A beeeeer in a tree..." every time someone plays the 12 Days of Christmas. 🍻❤❤❤
When you’re a boy, every female teacher over 30 is kind of an Edith Prickley. You can’t imagine them ever being truly young and sexy, so if they talk that way, it’s kind of gruesome. Which is funny, in hindsight.
OMG! I used to watch this back in the late 1970's in Ohio late night weekends. Brings back memories and I thought these actors were hilarious! Gene Levy was my favorite. Thanks for posting!!!
I'm a Canadian who used to watch SCTV every week(I'm 60) and STILL think it's superior to SNL. I couldn't always convince people of this. It has legs, staying power that that other show often doesn't have.
Yes. Look at the talent! The primary actors all went on to be so successful in movies. I'm American and think Kids in the Hall and SCTV were epic comedy achievements. Thank you Canada.
Bill Needle psychologically destroying the Travolta (?) and Bo Derek takeoffs was hilarious. You get the impression that someone in the writers room was having fun there.
Like a Time Machine with the commercials, and that Elvis one was perfect, I thought it was a skit the way they cut it when it was becoming just big words that no trinket off TV could live up too.
The memories this brings back are great. One of the odder ones is that I had a girlfriend who lived in the apartment building in the opening credits from which they threw all those TV sets.
Dave Thomas was a master impressionist in that he could _stay funny_ while doing all those impressions. He also was great at voice mimicry, which Candy and Flaherty weren't.
Right after graduating HS, I traded my 1970 T/A Challenger for a 1971 440 six pack Roadrunner. One night we were watching SCTV and in one of the episodes Edith Prickley was driving a Blue 1971 Roadrunner with white strobe light decals. Her car looked just like mine. To this day I remember her crazy @ss driving “my car”. SCTV was a funny show as was Fridays. 🤙🤙🤙
Sounds like Edith Prickley is obsessed with Parnell Roberts!!! She gushes over him with his name or his Trapper John character in all the prizes she mentioned.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

My list of sketch shows that are better than Saturday Night Live are: this show, Fridays, In Living Color, Chappelle's Show, and Key and Peele. I do have Kids in the Hall as an honorable mention.
@@canaisyoung3601 Fridays was very underrated. I used to watch it here on the local ABC affiliate when I was growing up but it was only on for a few years. One of the more memorable characters was the little boy played by a pre-Seinfeld Michael Richards who always used to destroy things in the midst of playing with his toys. Larry David was also involved in Fridays, so it wasn't surprising to see many of Richards' former Fridays co-stars make appearances throughout the run of Seinfeld. Mary Edith Burrell played the mother of a little boy always getting bad vibes from Jerry; Melanie Chartoff played the comedy club barmaid that George Costanza dated for some time (The Fire episode); and Bruce Mahler played the rabbi always horning in on Elaine Benes' personal affairs.
Interesting, no John Candy or Martin Short. MS must have moved to SNL and JC was making movies. Also in the commercials John Walsh was not known as host of America’s Most Wanted.

Kids in the Hall had 5 seasons but they were all excellent!
The actual commercials included fit so well....They were carrying the program into a meta-reality....
