The puppet celebrating in the corner is hilarious.
That look from Martin Short when he is gloving up as Rogers is priceless.....
This skit is utterly brilliant. Every single part of it. Even the passing reference by Howard Cosell to "Roone" meaning Roone Arledge, the President of ABC (Cosell's network) Sports at the time. Rick Moranis' impression of Dick Cavett might just be the most spot-on impression of anyone, I've ever seen.
Another absolutely classic SCTV skit. As a Canadian, this warms my heart. As an aside, I think that Rick Moranis does a better Dick Cavett than Dick Cavett.
I was doing something else with this in the background. It was so spot on, I stopped what I was doing to come look and see if they had gotten the real Dick Cavett for the sketch.
@@Beeznitchio you should’ve been able to tell because the real Dick Cavett would’ve gone on talking for another five minutes. ;-)
@@johnsrabe LOL!
Eugene Levy as Howard Cosell is perfection
It's a dark day in Mr. Rodgers neighbourhood! 🤣🤣🤣
I still remember "Battle of the Network Stars" and this skit.
Excellent.
I don't know if you saw it but they did a reboot of Battle Of The Network Stars last year but since there are so many TV networks now they did stuff like reality stars against TV cops. Don't think it even made it one season.
This was my favorite episode of Mister Rogers when I was a kid.
so many great little touches everywhere. comedy gods.
I hope people realize how good this is!
Brilliant stuff. I use to stay up late when I was 10, 11, 12 years old on Sat nights to watch this.
I always knew there were humourless people in the world but to see 38 of them anonymously out themselves is still a surprise.
“Against that man, Carl Sagan, whose series Cosmos, was, well, to be quite honest, not as effective as he’d hoped”. Levy nails Howard Cosell. This sketch has made me laugh since I first saw it staying up late on Saturday nights in the early eighties.
I loved that show when I was in HS; the only comedy show I loved more was Monty Python. The level of humor in both shows was sublime for a teen nerd like me.
I spent many an evening as a teen watching Monty Python. The Ministry of Silly Walks sketch was the first one I ever saw, it is crazy how almost 35 years later I remember just changing the knob (70s and 80s channel surfing for you young people out there) and saw this lanky, serious gentleman stepping down a sidewalk in an odd fashion, and then the sign... I burst out laughing, sat down on the floor, and never looked back.
Rick Moranis's Dick Cavett is indistinguishable from the real thing. Amazing.
Remember SCTV as a kid!! Great memories!!
Oh my gosh! How I these love these guys & gals!
I was lucky enough to live in Edmonton, AB, when they were filming here, & managed to see them working.more than once. Cant tell you how many hours of SCTV we watched; we could talk in code using lines, character traits & expressions, etc.
The skits dont seem tired to me, & its great fun to catch up on YT. 😂
2:20 that looked so much like Julia Childs I freaked a little.
I love how these parodies of Fred Rogers always make him out to be a bad boy.
lovable characters all around
if there's anyone you know who never saw SCTV, show them this one sketch. It pretty much sums up the greatness and hilarity of these guys.
Levy's Cosell: "But there!"
My favourite sound bite of my youth.
I forgot how damn good this show is. I gotta get these on DVD.
This show and kids in the hall are incredible. Made me laugh more than snl.
That Dick Cavett impersonation was 1000% spot on. Too bad Rick Moranis left showbiz so early, he was such a talent.
Mr Rogers won fair and square.
Definitely John Candy as Julia Childs, his face is unmistakable, plus the height
Katherine O Hara in fat suit
this is fricken ridiculous. i love it
BTW, the part with Cosell being ashamed to be associated with this is a parody of him saying that many times in real life while he was doing boxing matches! Boxing had so many bogus judgments and Cosell would rant being ashamed he was associated with it a LOT!
Holy shit they were basting Julia child in the corner. My stomach hurts from laughing this hard.
Moranis' Cavett is beyond unbelievable.
watched this many times and still laugh out loud when I see it again!
Earth, Wind, and Fire! 🤣
When there was actually comedy in the world.
Moranis doing Cavett is pretty fantastic.
WOW! #RickMoranis doing Dick Cavett better than the man himself 😂😂😂
SCTV was brilliant.
For you younger folks. Search youtube for clips of the real Howard Cosell and you'll find out how brilliant this is.
I’d like to have seen Rogers versus Sagan for the title.
"Coq au vin or no coq au vin!"
This is wrong. But funny on so many levels. Yes the impersonations are amazing and funny. Yes the absurdity of Mr. Rogers boxing with Julia is wonderfully ridiculous. But they are also lampooning the old TV show Battle of the Network Stars. Just sheer brilliance. 😂
King Friday in his corner 😂😂😂
lol
the mr rogers is too much xD
When I saw the thumbnail for this, I thought that someone must have messed with the picture in Photoshop to make it look even more ridiculous. It was only when I saw the sketch that I realized it was latex, and a LOT of it. How many hours of Martin Short's life been spent patiently sat in a make up artist's chair? Also, when you consider that SCTV ended in 1984, the latex prosthetics used are really groundbreaking
all of the SCTV actors looked similiar to whom they were portraying. rick moranis as woody allen, dave thomas as bob hope, eugene levy as gene shalit, joe flaherty as bing crosby etc. etc. along with the great acting, it made the skits very believable no matter how ridiculous the person was being portrayed. guy caballero, bobby bittman, earl camembert, count floyd were running characters in the SCTV world that interacted with one another.......... edith prickley was another.
"I don't have to explain. You saw it. He beat the woman unconscious with a puppet." That line from Levy as Howard Cosell was just the cherry on top for this skit. Just hilarious.
Rick Moranis as Dick Cavett was spot on too.
@@jimsheahan3879Why does that bumper music sound like proto-DeBarge?
@@RideAcrossTheRiver
No idea what you’re talking about.
@@jimsheahan3879But it does!
@@RideAcrossTheRiver That is actually Earth, Wind & Fire's song "In the Stone" from their I Am album. TV shows back in the 70's and 80's could get away with using contemporary songs without paying royalties.
Eugene Levy's spot-on Cosell popped into my mind today and this skit is still so fresh.
Yeah, he pulls all the Cosell-isms. The sanctimonious complaining, the "It's a TREMENDOUS fight". Eerily accurate impression. It's not like Levy was/is a professional Cosell imitator. He's got a huge bag of tricks. This was just a one-off, but he absolutely nailed it.
Even after 40+ years since I first saw this skit, I still piss my pants laughing when Mr. Rogers lands that left hook
King Friday cheering in the corner does it for me.
Its Mr. Rogers entrance into the ring that had me in tears@@ayfray9998
Martin Short's physical humor is so damn funny. Genius.
Me too!!! I'm still crying!!!🤣😂🤣😂
"I don't have to explain. You saw it. He beat the woman unconscious with a puppet."
That line is the perfect capper for the whole skit.
LMAO!!!
The Howard Cosell impression really sold it.
Kind of creepy the mailman was named mr. Mcfeely 🤔
I was just thinking that it was a hilarious line...🤣
The guys were firing on all cylinders in this one! This sketch never gets old, easily one of the all-time SCTV classics. All of these impressions are absolutely spot-on!
Check out "Vikings and Beekeepers".
So true. No one broke character and the monologue was brilliant. What’s great is they all did amazing things after!
So agree with you! Absolute comedy GOLD!
Definitely one of my favourites!
Why is it so damn funny?
Rick Moranis's Cavett is outright eerie.
Moranis' s Cavett interview of Bobby Bittman was one of the funniest things I ever saw--he was reviewing Bittman's acting/directing in a movie ("Funny Stuff")--which wasn't funny at all-he was condescending and cruel to Bittman and yet Bittman didn't realize it until the end when he just got up and left
Yep I remember that one. where Bittman was trying to be a serious actor. Too funny. SCTV really got how ridiculous Hollywood is. Amazing that they weren't bared from working in that town.
Yep, that was a highlight. As well as Bobby Bittman's PSA for libraries ("lie-barrys") and Moby Dick, "...a story about a boy... and a whale... and all their adventures." Great stuff! SCTV was amazing.
mightymartianca I've never seen a better impression of dick cavett my God that was fantastic. Idk if he did it more or just this once but dammit that was great.
Add Moranis doing Merv Griffin. Awesome. Actors you don't think could be imitated, Moranis nailed.
Rick Moranis nails Dick Cavett.
Gosh, I hope not.
Dick Cavett is my 3rd cousin and I would agree!
It was Martin Short doing Cavett
@@rogitiricardo No it was Moranis doing Cavett. Martin Short was Fred Rogers.
@@rogitiricardo no it wasn't.
"It's a dark day in Mister Rogers' neighborhood." That line is comedy gold!
That line still kills me!!!😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I've been walking around Tucson AZ talking to myself and looking edgy all while reciting: "it's a dark day in Mr. Rogers' neighborhood". Who knew?
That line could go all the way.
Plus proof that Dick Cavett always was a bum.
He's hitting Child with the loveable King Friday.
That was hilarious, right out of 1970's Pro Wrestling.
Bahahahahaa😄
"Oh, my liege ..." -- _Mrs. Falbo's Tiny Town_
The talent on this show is still unmatched
Didn't notice him at first--King Friday cheering wildly in Mr. Rogers' corner. Hilarious. Also, loved Julia Child getting water from a roasting pan via turkey baster.
That was damn clever wasn't it. Really talented minds
Haha..Good ops
Coq au vin or no coq au vin
@@superweak Coq au vin should be prepared with real cocoa.
As good as Martin Short and John Candy were in this sketch (and they were good), it's Eugene Levy's Howard Cosell that makes it (and special nod to Moranis's Dick Cavett). Some of SCTV's impersonation were so good they were eerie.
bob hope , bing crosby, merv griffin, woody allen, etc. very underated group of actors in this bunch.
Moranis as David Brinkley...."why can't I find a weed that will get me stoned?" in that trademark slow Brinkley speech.
Martin Short's Mr. Rodgers did a little Ed Grimley there at the end.
Old swivel hips
I didn't realize that was Martin Short!! I was wondering who that was!
I must say
I noticed that. That’s how I figured out who it was! LOL
John Candy as Julia Child! Perfect.
On it"s worst day SCTV smoked SNL!
Actually these sketches hold up great todayt. I recently found the first 2 seasons of SNL and was amazed at how unfunny the dated hippy humor had become!
Thank you, yes. SNL was disjointed and sophomoric. SCTV was brilliant.
While I prefer SCTV, it's apples and oranges to compare a taped show to a live show done on a six day turnaround. The whole idea of SNL at its inception was to bring live performance back to television.
Sheer perfection!
the John Candy 'Pepi Longstalking Episode' ....you'd laughed so hard ...your stomach felt like Rocky was punching you. "Monty Python & the Holy Grail' level of laughter.
“Coq au Vin. Or no Coq au Vin. This woman is in trouble” Makes me laugh every time. Levy is bang-on with his Cosell imitation.
"I certainly hope the young fans of Mister Roger's Neighbourhood aren't staying up to watch this bloody travesty"
+wwod123 lol
Perfectly written line if you're old enough to remember Howard Cosell.
rotflmfao
Parody (Rogers vs. Child) on top of parody (Battle of the Network Superstars) on top of parody (of actual sports coverage). Pure genius!
Right, right, right. That was their genius...everything had more than one layer.
Hard to find this kind of genius lately. Just so good, it is marvelous.
@@kathyd456I think SNL's "What Up With That" series comes close if not on-par.
The Dick Cavett impression is uncanny. And this sketch is pure gold to someone who used to watch the programs of Mr. Rogers and Julia Child on PBS in the 1970s. I love this.
Eugene's makeup to look like Cosell is excellent. Also the makeup of Mr. Rogers and Julia Childs. Love Moranis as Cavett. Damn this show was great, and they came up with some really wacky scenarios.
their impersonations were off the charts.
Short(?) was wearing a Mr. Rogers mask.
@@RonJohn63 Not really a mask. Fake nose, teeth, eyebrows.
SCTV....Mad TV....In Living Color...are all much funnier than SNL which remains on the air. Makes no sense!
I was never able to look at either Fred Rogers or Julia Child the same way again after watching this back when it was broadcast.
Just think that we had SCTV long enough to appreciate and long enough to take it for granted. Its era seems like a simpler and better time now.
I've seen boxing skits from the 3 Stooges, Abbott and Costello, Monty Python and many others, but THIS is my favorite of all time. He beat her unconscious with a puppet. It's a dark day in Mr Rodger's Neighborhood, LOL.
Monty Python's Battle of the Upper Class Twits was also hilarious.
@@fmaren See! Now I want to see that! The title alone is funny.
@@fmaren Totally just went to see it. Hurtling over matchboxes, that was Ridiculous! Thank you!
😆😆😆😆😆😆
Benny Hill considered funnier than Monty Python by two TV stations --WOR and WLVI!
Martin Short as Fred Rogers. Absolutely HILARIOUS! When he turned to camera and smiled, I roared with laughter! I could almost hear Howard Cosell's stacatto voice, "Ro-gers drops Child in the opening salvo!" Forgive me, I was laughing too hard to hear what he actually said here.
It’s eerie how Much Candy resembles Julia Child. A scream.
Or, as the French say, c'est fou avec moutarde et beurre noire!
When Mr Rogers trips up on the ropes coming in, *I just lose it* !!
Right, that was beautiful. I wonder if that was the first take?
One of the funniest sketches in TV history.!
PBS did a 6-part series on television and showcased this skit in their episode on tv comedy, narrated by Edwin Newman.
"you saw it. he beat the woman unconscious with a puppet..." 😂😂😂
Best comedy skit show ever. I can't believe it's 40 years since I used to stay up late (as a kid) with one of my older sisters on Sat nights to watch this. Good times. Great show.
In know!! If my folks were out late, we'd stay up past bedtime... little rebels... 😉
In Chicago it was on right after the original cast from Saturday Night Live Incredible 2 hours of Comedy every week
Fight was rigged. Obviously the ref was paid to look the other way, reminds me of WWF days. Julia had the height and weight, but Mr. Rogers socked her with the puppet and it was all over after that.
Eugene Levy turning up the volume is classic Cosell "this is a TREMENDOUS FIGHT!"
Shame we'll never see this type of Comedy again.......
This is a “tremendous “ fight!! Levy does a tremendous Cosell..!!
further proof that the 80s were a Glorious time friends.
Absolutely!
Minus the aids and crack epidemic and constant threat of nuclear war
I had fun. There was plenty of crap too; the Cold War and emergence of AIDS come to mind. But I was a kid and had a great decade. Alway loved this show then...and now.
"Right there! He rocked Julia Child with a devastating left!" That has been my battle cry for 40 years.
John Candy looked awfully close to Julia Child in this sketch. The makeup artists were amazing.
The match itself was hilarious.
The Howard Cosell/Dick Cavett bit was brilliantly written and performed, just like both real life characters.
IM DYINGGGGG lmao literally screaming with laughter
I'm more concerned about Martin Short looking so much like Mr. Rogers that I'm amazed there was no lawsuit or cease and desist warning.
@@canaisyoung3601, Mr. Rogers had a great sense of humour and parody is generally protected from lawsuits.
Absolutely fantastic stuff! All the impressions were excellent!!!🤣🤣😳
King Friday had no right to get involved. NO RIGHT AT ALL!
As a PBS intellectual, I can say *this is pretty accurate*
PBS intellectual LOL
To viewers like you ... thank you.
As someone who grew up with Monday Night Football in its prime, I love Levy's Cosell.
"A very witty quip, Dick, but let’s not waste any more time.
"
"Now Dick, please, try and be more concise."
"I don’t mind verbosity, but he’s ruining the pace of the show."
I missed so much school watching Monday NFL.LOL
LOLLLL the Dick Cavett scene was especially hilarious -- that is EXACTLY how he is (I mean that in a good way)
SCTV was hilarious - it was on after Saturday Night Live - and I remember thinking it was much funnier than SNL many times.
Always wondered why the SCTV shows aren't in rerun syndication - they would still be some of the funniest stuff on TV now - even if some younger viewers won't immediately know what is being parodied.
This clip is a parody of a show called Battle of the NBC Stars, where they would take athletes from different sports and have them compete in some other sport - like taking basketball players and football players and having them in a home-run derby, or something.
it was hosted by Howard Cosell and it was pretty stupid, except for the things that Howard Cosell would say directly to the athletes in a frank way, like "well, it's a good thing you didn't choose baseball for your sport, Joe Namath, because you would never have gotten off the bench until late September when your team has no chance of the playoffs" - things like that which the players often had no good response back - I'm not sure the players really liked being on the show, sometimes.
But even if you haven't seen the show being parodied, this SCTV clip is hilarious.
Not just nbc, but all 3 networks. Battle of the Network Stars
available on youtube now
Grubby Bean every time it was consistently more funny THAN SNL
Grubby Bean David letterman would take on Billy crystal and other stars would do other stuff. I remember the show.
Who is doing Howard Cosel? Is that really Howard? ; )
Eugene Levy.
OMG! Martin Short is the greatest Mr. Rogers ever!
+Michael Bailey Indeed!I began laughing just from seeing him look directly at the camera!
+tabbypappy I didn't recognise Marty for ages!
Classic Canuck...silly ness..Toronto's..fire hall lovleys...Great..Great..Great..I just peed me pants lol
And the best part is--he didn't even have to speak!
I thought the mouth guard was his real (fake) teeth for the Character. He looks Hilarious and It made me laugh out loud! Took a couple of times watching it (on my phone) to realize what it really was. I feel very lucky to have lived during the time of SCTV!
Such a Treasure trove of Talented people.
The WWF would refer to King Friday as a "foreign object". I miss this show and the cast so much. They were waaaaay more creative and funny than SNL.
One of the greatest comedy shows of all time.
Classsic childhood memories. I’m old enough to get all the references. Comedy brilliance. Could have made a whole show won this. Thanks SCTV!
"I certainly hope the young fans of Mister Roger's Neighbourhood aren't staying up to watch this bloody travesty"
This is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen.....Martin Short is hysterical....John Candy as Julia Child....Eugene Levy does the perfect Howard Cosell....Rick Moranis does the best Cavett ever.....” he beat the woman unconscious with a puppet”. I’m still laughing.....solid gold! 😂
Do all of these actors have to dress up like woman to make it big? What gives? The list is long
It does not get any better than this! This was one of the best shows of all time. I think my favorite was Five Neat Guys. Of course, the egg salad song was epic!! 🤩😂
Every single line is perfect and every single body movement is perfect. I can watch these clips a hundred times and still discover something in a movement or line I didn't notice before. It is perfect comedy. Long live SCTV.
Huh? Other than his costume, Short was nothing like Mr. Rogers.
Crabby Old Gamer wow, you are crabby. lol
its absolutely a classic--feel honored I got to see this when it first came out--back when comedy was actually funny (not like the garbage that's available now)--its fascinating too that SCTV worked for many years on a "shoestring" budget yet were able to produce the quality of shows/ideas/skits they did--it was like "lightening in a bottle" and I doubt we will ever see anything like this again
He wastes his life playing video games. Don't listen to him...
You really don't get it do you? Go back to watching SNL. You will have lots of friends there.
I don't think it's a fair fight when Mr. Rogers turns it into a tag team match with King Friday XIII.
Unfortunately, the much ballyhooed PBS Orson Welles-Luciano Pavarotti sumo wrestling gala will not air due to a late reschedule of the Sandler and Young Dancing/Curling special.....
"Three Blind Mice......"
Everyone knows Rick Moranis as a hilarious character actor, which he is. But I am just impressed as hell with his abilities as an impressionist. If you have never seen his impression of George Carlin, look it up. It is pure comedy gold.
I can’t believe how much John Candy looks like Julia. 😂
Would like to have seen Buckley and Sagan fight too.
The absurdity is fantastic.
PURE GENIUS. I AM CANADIAN AND THIS BLOWS SNL AWAY.
Always did!
I AM AMERICAN AND I SAY MUCH OF BOTH WERE GREAT. AND BOTH HAD SOME CRAP. (why are we yelling?)
Well Canada in general blows America away.
