    Brilliant video! I'm used to working with planes through Sanda, Gracie Jiujitsu and Bujinkan Ninjutsu but have never had it broken down so concisely like this. We sort of learn and understand and feel them out but never analyse them as such. Thank you for sharing!

    Yep..."planes" is just a way to illustrate fundamental (and old) concept of takedowns....just like active posting, leg drags etc are not really "new". I just think many people focus on "kuzushi", but timing/tactics are big in takedowns not just planes/throw mechanics...the partners? Check out part 2 (and the blog post), where I go into a bit on tatics!

    thank you! I think this plane concept makes the "intuitive" a bit easier to convey to the lay person. From then on the more complex strategies/nuances of take downs become a bit more logical. Glad you found it useful!

      thanks! I have never seen the concept of planes used anywhere in videos/books so I wanted to put it out there, hopefully it's a useful concept to the community

  • @BJJSCOUT
    @BJJSCOUT  11 лет назад

    a lot of throws ( like ippon) look like have cleaned a guy off his feet but really that's more the consequence of nailing the throw on the weak plane so maximal force is applied. Even in seoi nages (and all forward throws) you want to go against the weak plane

  • @aikibaby
    @aikibaby 11 лет назад

    Great analysis in this and the Ronda Rousey clip. Both these players have stepped close to what Mifune was using. This analysis helps me to understand what I've been looking for in the four fundamental sweeps and puts better concepts under what I've been feeling.

    Awesome videos. Have you thought about doing a breakdown video of Lucas Lepri? He has a great all around game. His style is very effective, nothing flashy, just great pressure and great side to side movement.

    On throwing? so many good instructionals on youtube... but one thing you can't really find on youtube is "when" to throw though (ie footwork and timing). Maybe I might do that. Actually the most important thing about judo missing on youtube is the "how to train/develop" a throwset (ie the method elite judoka train). There are some specific things you need to do which I can never find explained online. Maybe I will cover that too later. But Rodolfo first!

    I absolutely love your presentation. The use of the CGA Judoka along with the clock and planar lines for your examples are priceless! I have been trying to figure out how to do that for explaining angles of take down attacks for wrestling, Beautiful work. I can't thank you enough for sharing this, I bow to you! = )

  • @BJJSCOUT
    @BJJSCOUT  11 лет назад

    well wrestling is different from judo, but you also want to push against the weak plane during the drive/penetration if you can. Thing is just once i have your legs in a single/double, there are variety of ways to finish the take down (besides just going against the weak plane)

    hihi yes, it is hard to encapsulate all the intricacies of judo into one short video, but in my opinion, things like kuzushi, tsurikomi, debana, happen "after" the moment you identify the plane, and that intuition on "when" to attack was what I was trying to convey vs "how"( kuzushi, tsuri, debana). A lot of what I try to do is to really convey concepts (ie active posting, why a guard works) rather than detailed instructionals. Yes pls we can always discuss more on my FB @ bjjscout! thanks!

  • @bizquisite

    Terrific video! I really like Vieira's throwing game. He's actually using a seoi-otoshi, and sometimes it starts looking like uki-otoshi when he initiates the throw more from the side and doesn't get underneath his opponent. That does nothing to affect your analysis, but it does to help explain why his seoi-nage may be considered ugly. Kodokan Judo Throwing Techniques by Toshiro Daigo is a fantastic text for studying throws if you can find a copy. Looking forward to future videos!

    That plain disappears once you go on all fours, but in doing so you sacrifice a lot for stability. Your back is exposed. Your shooting range is halfed since you can't make that long stride your throwing abilities are eliminated and your defence in halfed... You prevent being thrown but you at a lot more of a cost. Its almost like stats in a video game. You sacrifice a stat to focus on a different stat and over power it. Or you can have a well balanced weak character. Looking for a strong defence

    yep, u get it more or less, there is a "weak plane" (whenever ur hips and feet line up, not just diagonally)...once seeing it becomes your instinct, take down strategy will start to make more sense I think

    @denverstapleton7621 11 лет назад

    this is a great way to see the over exposure of the weakest defense i.e. goin with the flow.. in other words there is always a strong and a soft... if that makes any sense....

  • @BJJSCOUT
    @BJJSCOUT  11 лет назад

    true his double is pretty effective, like being hit by a truck...i think wrestling vids online already would cover it pretty much though, I would like to do something on buchecha at some point so who knows...

  • @BJJSCOUT
    @BJJSCOUT  11 лет назад

    but hell maybe its uki otoshi, who knows. Some people say rodolfo doesn't rotate fully in to avoid a back take, but then with morote it's not easy to get back taken (unlike ippon seoi nage), maybe one he will shed light on it in an interview or something

    Rodolfo's "morote" does not rotate in like the classical morote because it is not morote seio nage (two handed back carry throw) - it is uki otoshi (floating drop). This is a very unusual attack and is used very infrequently in competition judo. It seems to work better in BJJ competition than in Judo, likely because of the the bent posture of most BJJ competitors.

  • @BJJSCOUT
    @BJJSCOUT  11 лет назад

    what you go for and what you get might end up being different though, I think Rodolfo is going for a morote but execution issues sometimes means he doesn't get the full rotation, uki otoshi (at least the classical one which is almost like a akido wrist lock throw, and most drops like valley drop, side separation etc, except for taiotoshi) is very "iffy" to m as a usable throw at the elite level...because they don't make much body contact when fully executed, so when u "miss" u hardly "throw"

    BJJSCOUT, I really love your videos... here's my 2 cents: A lot of times you have text in the video while something important is happening. This way we can only either look at the movement, or read the text. This sometimes leads to missing one of them, as sometimes the fragments are pretty short. So then we have to go back and rewatch. Maybe you could add more textscreens in between, or freeze the image so we can first read the text and then see the action or something... Keep up the good work!

    Yes the new rules makes judo a bit "unrealistic" and more like a game/sport now. But the idea of planes can still be useful for BJJ-ers!

  • @Sturmmie
    @Sturmmie 11 лет назад

    as a non-native english speaker, I find it somehow difficult to read all the explanations given and also watch the action.. I had to pause the video several times :P
    In my opinion some kind of slow-mo would be appreciated, combined with a longer caption stay onscreen, not only we have to read but also to understand what's being explained, and if it's some new stuff like this, it takes some time (at least to me).
    Keep it up, awesome work on your channel. Love it so much! Greetings from Spain

    I think the reason he does the seo nage side ways is the differences between BJJ Judo rules. If you do a proper seo nage you are giving your back witch is critical in BJJ and not in Judo. If you get the trow you win!

  • @BJJSCOUT
    @BJJSCOUT  11 лет назад

    xande has an online training website though, honestly i think he would do the best job of breaking himself down I think...i think if takedowns was 4 points there would be more incentive to do them tactically...right now, the 2 you get only to get swept and concede a 2 doesn't really make it attractive....
