    I have Chioa Goo interchangeably needles. After long hours of knitting like doing a sweater, they eventually untwist. They also aren’t seamless. My thinner yarn gets caught up in that edge you are taking about. In order to have this type of system I suppose you have to give up something. Nothing is ever perfect in our world. I just keep tightening them down. I love the flexibility they offer.

    I generally stick to KnitPro (which I believe is the same as Knitter's Pride) and I love the Nova needles too for their slickness. I've always knitted tightly and they make a big difference to me. The only thing that really bothered me with them was that the cables would occasionally unscrew - usually because I had to twist the needles in the work to keep the cable from kinking awkwardly. That's been resolved now with their new swivel cables that came out with their Mindful Collection and that has basically made them perfect for me. I don't know if you've tried them yet, but I'd love to hear your opinion of them too.

    Can you comfortably knit with the smallest cable size? My current knitting needle set (boye) has needles that are so long that it's almost impossible to get the bottom end of the needles far apart enough to get the tips of the needles to face each other. Do any of those sets have the same issue?

      @@NimbleNeedles INTERCHANGEABLES - ChiaoG’s
      On Amaz., there seem to be several set choices for the 4" and 5” ones. The options are Twist Red Lace, Twist Tip, or Twist (so three types of twist, none of which I understand), and I cannot tell which ones are complete sets in most cases. One set includes an Artsi. bag for $27, which seems extortionate for a cloth bag. These are some of the options, which I have numbered according to 4-inch or 5-inch (a or b), and the type of twist (1, 2, or 3):
      (1a) 4-inch … ChiaoG Knitting Needles Interchangeable TWIST RED LACE Complete 4-Inch Needle Set Bundle with 1 Artsi. Crafts Project Bag 7400-C ($157.17)
      (1b) 5-inch … ChiaoG Knitting Needles Interchangeable TWIST RED LACE Complete 5-Inch Needle Set Bundle with 1 Artsi. Crafts Project Bag 7500-C ($157.17)
      (2a) 4-inch … where is the link to the 4-inch one like 2b?
      (2b) 5-inch … ChiaoG TWIST RED LACE Interchangeables ($130) - there are two links to the same one its seems with one labeled as “Amaz.’s Choice” and one not.
      (3a) 4-inch … where is the link for the 4-inch one like 3b?
      (3b) 5-inch … CHIAOG 7500-C 2.75-10.0mm TWIST RED LACE Interchangeable Set
      (4a) 4-inch … ChiaG 7400-C TWIST TIP Interchangeable Complete Set, 4-Inch ($130.70)
      (4b) 5-inch … where is the link for the 5-inch one like 4a?
      TWIST TYPES - what is the difference between the twist red lace and twist tip? (I am not planning to ever knit lace patterns, but will be making animals and toys so would like sizes as low as 000000, if possible, but at least as low as 000.)
      SIZE - I think the size I need is the 5” as I have average-sized hands, so the 4” ones may be too short. Does that sound right based on what I will be knitting (see the projects I will be knitting section above)?
      COMPLETE SET - 2b seems to be the same as 1b except for the Artsi. bag. It’s hard to tell from the description though as the details in the description are different.
      CABLES AND OTHER EXTRAS - some commenters on Amaz. are saying buy extra cables and whatnot. Why would I need extra ones? Also, I am confused by which Amaz. page has the extra cables to go with the 5" set and what other extras I may need. Would you please add links to the extras?
      PRICE - I have seen two jumps in price since the beginning of September for the complete set - $113 to $123 to $130 without the bag and to $157 with the bag. That’s a huge hike in just one month, and extremely unusual for there to be two hikes in just a month. Is this a mistake?
      Sorry to be such a bother with so many questions, but they're a big investment, so I want to be sure to choose the right ones, and you seem to be the best person to ask on YT due to the level of detail that you go into.

    I only have experience with ChiaGoo needles; I once had to buy a size 10 60" circular needle to complete a cape for my wife. Having used Susan Bates and Boye needles for decades, I was not prepared for the upgrade in quality. In my experience, the ChiaGoo needles don't get dull at all; I've actually sustained a knitting injury on my right index finger, which taught me not to push the needle out of the stitch, and to keep a few Band-Aids in my project bags. The cable is strong, and it doesn't kink up. Also, the join between the cable and the needles doesn't affect my knitting speed (I focus more on accuracy than speed, but I'm not exactly the slowest knitter out there). The store-bought needles always have some sort of bend to them, which catch onto the upcoming stitches without fail, and having to reposition these stitches takes time that I don't have. I'm sure the other needles are top-notch, but I like my ChiaGoo needle, and will be purchasing the full set. Merry Christmas to me!

    I've tried Addi, ChiaoGoo, and Knitters Pride (Where I live in NZ they're branded as Knit Pro though!), I have to say my ChiaoGoos definitely end up getting the most use. I'm mostly a lace knitter, so I tend to use smaller sizes and prefer longer/sharper tips, which is really something I find the ChiaoGoos have the best balance of, and I really struggle going back to any other cables after trying the memory-free cables. The fact their needles are split over 3 different cable sizes is a bit inconvenient at times, but considering how good the cables are and how smooth a transition they get because of that choice, I can live with having to but a few extra cables if I ever need them.
    One problem I haven't seen anyone really mention is that the coated brands get a bit of a weird filmy feeling to them if you don't use them for a while. It wipes off easily, but it's a quirk that comes with storing them in my experience. Addi's have a very distinct smell because of the materials they use as well, which may be a bit odd to some people.
    Both Addi and ChiaoGoo have had excellent replacement policies in my experience, if they break you can either go straight to the manufacturer or usually take them back to the store you bought them for a replacement and they'll deal with that step for you.
    I still absolutely love my KP's and Addi's, but I am definitely in a very strong long-term relationship with my Chiaogoo needles!

    Hi Norman, thanks for a great review. I hope it’s ok if I add my 2 cents worth. When I first started knitting, my LYS recommended Hiya Hiya needles. I bought the sharps (they also come in regular which aren’t as sharp). I really like the pointy tips, but I hate the cables. They constantly try to curl back up into their packaged state. I then purchased a few fixed circular Addi needles. They are nice and smooth also with nice pointy tips, but again, I hated the cables. Then I purchased the Chiaogoo interchangeable set. They are nice and pointy like the Hiya Hiya’s, but the cable is amazing to work with. I use them for magic loop frequently without any problems. The only way that I could see anyone having issues with them not bending enough would be if you used a cable that is too short. I’m confused as to why having 6 cables instead of three is an inconvenience. I think it’s a benefit because I can have two projects going at the same time for example, I can make one hat on size 7 needles and a second hat on size 11 both using the 16 in cable (one small and one large), or two blankets using the longer cables etc. I would also like to mention that I am not personally a fan of wooden needles, and I would definitely NOT compare either the Hiya Hiya or the Chiaogoo sets to wooden needles. They are definitely not as slick as the addi’s, but nothing like wood. Another thing worth mentioning is that the case that the Hiya Hiya needles come in is terrible. If you put it into your knitting bag, and either the needle case moves or you accidentally tip your bag over, all of the needles fall out of the case and go everywhere. Even though we seem to have different needle preferences, I really did enjoy your review. You were very thorough with each set. I look forward to watching your videos in the future.😀

      It's totally okay to add your 2 cents. In fact it's very much appreciated and I'm sure other knitters will thank you for your input.
      What I meant with the 6 cables is that they are actually 3 large and 3 small cables. And that makes things complicated. Obviously, more cables is always better. And I agree about the hiyahiya case....it's interesting to say the least.
      As for the CG cables: I know a lot of ppl like them and I guess that's what I said. And of course you can take a long cable and make magic loop work. But it's still my subjective opinion that they are not the best for it. But hey, all fir the better if you finally found the needles that work for you! ❤☺️

    Knit picks interchangeable tiny lace needles are amazing! All knit picks interchangeables swap cables with each other. The only problem I’ve ever had is one of the cables breaking loose from the metal attachment. I’ve now purchased 2 sets of Knit Picks and love them. There’s also a connector piece so you can join multiple cords to obtain whatever length you need.

    Thank you so much for the going through the good and not so good of each of these needles. I ordered a set of the Knitters Pride Nova Platina because of your review. I am really excited about working with the needles to speed up my knitting. With one project in particular, speed in knitting is of the essence. I was also able to pick up speed with your demonstration of knitting English Style but picking instead of throwing. A little clumsy for me at first, but with the recommendation of knitting slow and methodically until my fingers got used it the new method, did the trick. Can’t thank you enough. Take care. I have an Addi Click Lace set and the needles I worked a bit more with deteriorated. The coating rubbed off on the ends which connect to the cables (probably my palms sweating had something to do with it), but those blackish sections make it very hard for the stitches to slide and I have to stop to help pull the stitches across that length. Not very enjoyable. I am now testing some KnitPro Nova Metal needles to see if the same happens..

    Hi Norman , I have watched this a couple of times and trying to figure out the best match for me. My dilemma is that I love addi needles and use them exclusively. I only started knitting this year.
    I mostly use 2.75 to 4mm and the addi set doesn’t go that low. I like to make knitted toys and will soon start doing socks (I can use dpn needles but prefer magic loop)
    After your video I thought I’d try the chai goo or hiyahiya since I can go smaller with this set.
    I’m trying to decide two things.
    If I get the chai goo will I struggle too much with the cord when doing the magic loop. Should I just get the addi set and accept that I can’t get those smaller needles?
    Your opinion would be appreciated, thank you 💕

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  2 года назад

      Well, i can only say that I do knit a lot of toys/tiny home decor. I I exclusively do that on the Karbonz needles by knitter's pride (i have a review here on my channel as well). I do however, use the fixed circulars and dpns. not the interchangeables.
      But other than that it's impossible to say. But if you love the addi needles, my guess would be that you won't like either HiyaHiya or ChiaoGoo as the needles are not as slick. I mean..you can still get the addi set and then buy two or three fixed circulars for those smaller projects. I mean...you will probably have to buy some adaptors extra cables when you go for ChiaoGoo as well. But those are just some thoughts.

    I have sets of all those brands, except for hiya hiya. I think your review is similar to mine, and quite a fair assessment. Chiaogoo replaced a faulty needle and cable for me as well. Only difference is, that in Australia, until recently, these sets were extremely expensive and averaging about $250 AUD for most sets. In the last couple of years, I have managed to acquire some sets around the $120 mark, which is a better outcome.

    love hiya hiya- Have the 5" long with sharp tips full set & the shorter regular tips. I love that you can join cables to get any length. I love the bead stoppers. I can use the cables with the bead stopper for holding stiches - they don't seem to pull the stiches apart so that I have large gaps when I pick them up under arms. I've used knit picks/knitters pride but prefer the hiya hiya. Very portable with the soft case - so easy to take the entire case along for a trip. Also the ability to add extensions is great. With one set & some additional pieces I can do any combination of straight or circular needles. I also spin yarn so I have to be able to adjust needles to get gauge. I like to keep to one brand and have sets of everything to keep guage consistent when I need to change to double points, circular, straight etc. I also have full sets of small circulars to do sleeve cuffs and smaller than 16" cable lengths. Great info. in video for those who don't have full sets yet!

    Hobby Lobby in the USA carries a nice acrylic set of Knit Pro IC needles at a very reasonable price, especially if you hit a 30% or 40% off coupon or sale. I got my set for $18 with a 40% off coupon. I enjoy using this set as much as I do my more expensive IC sets by ChiaoGoo and Knitter's Pride. Thank you for this excellent overview of needle sets. I considered buying a set and pored over the various brands and borrowed some from friends to try out. For me, the join never feels as smooth as my non-interchangeables, the sets are very expensive, and most of the sets seem to be mostly large needles that I rarely use. So I ended up buying two individual needle pairs- a US sizes 4 and 6- and an assortment of cables. These are so useful for stitch holding and only a dollar or two. And, of course, have an existing assortment of DPNs and set cable needles. (Lykkes tend to be the ones I use most.). But that said, I'm a fairly novice knitter and love learning more and more. That's why your videos are so great!

    Hi Norman! I am trying to find out if I actually need a needle set: For now I love making small things (socks/gloves) and pretty much only use 2mm to 3mm needles. The mini shorties set seems too fiddly for me and I like a long chord but I would like interchangable needles to play around with sizes and to be able to meet gages better. Based on my research there isnt even a set that includes these small sizes in their standard set. Maybe you have advice for me? Thank you so much for your expertise and your great blog

    Love this review!
    When I started to knit again after not knitting since I was a teenager in school I worked on a very big blanket (I know, crazy beginners project) so I got myself a few different needles in the same size but different brands and materials. Buying only a pair of each (6mm) let me try out a few before I settled for a what I liked best.
    I picked Chiaogoo. But I actually don't enjoy the red cables on chiaogoo (they unscrew for me even with tightener) so even when I eventually got a set, I got the plastic spin cables instead because i love that type. The red ones are my spare cables.
    AND a lot thanks to you mentioning in another video to pick the needles that fit you best, I recently got myself the (9-inch total) ADDI short sock circular needles, they're not as pointy as my chiaogoo so I love them for working on socks, especially in bigger sizes.
    This video sort of sums up that we should pick what WE like and not what a review says are best. So thank you! I feel so happy with my combination of needles now. 🧡Much love!
    ps. Now or the smallest sizes (2.mm and such) you now need to use the red Mini cable, so now there's 3 different cable sizes in Chiaogoo, wish they would combine the two sizes you mentioned to one.

    Hi Norman. I'm making my way through your videos. I'd say binge watching! (I'm on my way towards supporting your work. $$ It is very valuable to me!) Now I've watched a couple of your video reviews of interchangeable needle sets, and I was looking for any video that explained why to have a set of interchangeables at all. Ok, I can understand if the reasons are obvious to a seasoned knitter, maybe you have skipped this explanation! And forgive me if this has also been covered in any comments!
    When I initially was aware that these sets existed, I avoided getting one for various reasons. First it was an expense that I wasn't ready to make without being sure which brand of needles I would prefer. Second, I heard stories about "the join" which put me off from them entirely. Does the average fixed circular needle (from the brands you talk about) have a seamless join compared to the interchangeable needle? Really there is no join at all except where the needle attaches to the cord and this is something that I don't notice while knitting.
    If you have a chance: what are the basic reasons and maybe some of the not so basic reasons to have a set of interchangeable needles. As someone who has a good collection of fixed circulars already, I'm still considering getting a set.
    Totally fair for you to think I should "Google" for these answers- but I have come to really trust your perspective and enjoy hearing your views.

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  8 месяцев назад +1

      I think it's an "easy buy"...so you buy once and have all the needles you need. Are they better than fixed circulars? typically....no (tho most companies have not developed their fixed circulars in any meaningful way but put a lot of effort into interchangeables...soo..)
      Interchangeables allow you to switch needle size during a project easily (like when you transition between stitch patterns/techniques with different gauges) or use different tips on either end.

    Addi click is the worst I have encountered. I was knitting a difficult pattern and the needles open even though I tested them before and they were closed. Luckily I didn’t lose any stitches and put superglue inside to save them. Chiaogoo I find unreliable as my fixed needles had their cables broken by the joint after a few years of using them. And the cables are stiff and not good for magic loop. Knitpro only the more expensive sets are ok: mindful collection and lantern moon. Nova lost their coating after I made one sleeve as it just rubbed off. For the sets it is annoying that some companies don’t do quarters on the sizing.

    Great review. As I have allergies I have the ChiaoGoo Surgical Stainless Steel. Along with the Hiya Hiyas, for anyone whose health history shows best to avoid exposure to metal needles, some will say that what metals you are getting only on certain needles or call the process white brass, which I looked up the metals in making this, one company lists nickel the other does not. It bothers me when they do not tell you, or say on some products like Addi Turbos sold as circulars or Sock Rockets will list nickel but the Addi set doe not list that.
    If one has had allergic reactions as I have, it is more costly to me than taking the risk. I knit daily so my exposure is greater than many peoples would be so I must be careful. When I made the decision to go with ChiaoGoo, I have never regretted doing so. I do have some Addi needles, bamboo Flexi-Flips as bamboo is another very safe material. I can make a similar sort of needle with my ChiaoGoo set, and as I grip them hard, the 1.5 mm bamboo needle tends to bend, so don’t use them much. Good quality needles however.
    HiyaHiya makes a comparable product to Addi Flexi-Flips and some are also interchangeable but the last I checked, could not find the interchangeable ones, perhaps they had a limited production. Theirs are stainless steel also.
    Since I can make up needles from my various kits which are safe for me to use, I am happy to stay with what is compatible to my set.
    As I recovered from such arthritis in my hands that I could not very much hold a pencil, whatever it takes to be able to function well is my prime concern. I changed my diet also and that is where most of the heeling for arthritis was for me. I am out of a wheelchair also. It was all over my body, and don’t want to go back.

    I've been having problems with almost all the Knitting needle brands of interchangeable needles I have purchased regardless of the Brand. The cord is often and with frequency unscrewing from the needle. Is it the way I knit or hold the needles? If so, do you have any advice as to how I can correct this problem? I would appreciate your help regarding this matter> Thank you!

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  Год назад +1

      well, you might want to try swivel cables. that often fixes it. Other than that, addi has no screws, so these needles can't unscrew either.

    Actually I have one more (very noob) question... Why sharp tapers make a difference in lace knitting?

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  Год назад +1

      it makes entering the stitches easier..especially complicated stitches beyond knits and purls. However, the downside is that you can also split the yarn a lot more easily and if you constantly push against your needles, you will quickly split your skin. So it's better for advanced knitters.

    So helpful. Thank you, Norman - well laid out. Wish I'd found you before I bought. I like my ChiaGoos but need to buy more cables and tightening pins. BTW, it's not easy to find Addi needles in stores in Germany - I looked when in Frankfurt. Kits are too expensive for stores to keep hanging around. Just a word to people imagining (as I did) that you could do a little errands on your next trip to Europe.

    • @NimbleNeedles

      it depends on the store. most of them have one brand - but only one brand.
      And so happy to hear i was able to help you :)

    Thank you for being thorough size matters because I have big hands. And I like to knit in ML as well. I will buy Addie.

      Yeah, that's what always anoys me when other people recommend things like shorties (3" needles) and I'm like...what should I do with these? put them in my doll house?

    I appreciate the detail you provided evaluating different aspects of each needle set. It was very helpful that you noted what might be an advantage for one type of knitter (big hands, lace knitter, etc.) might be a disadvantage to another type of knitter. Thanks so much!

    Hello Norman
    Merci beaucoup pour ces explorations très sérieusement précise.
    C'est cela qui est utile.
    3 ans après tout les cparaisons ont changé je trouve car knit pro a créé les mindful avec ses câbles aciers 360°.Je viens de les découvrir et cela change toutes mes préférences.
    Heureusement vous avez fait un comparatif plus récent.
    J'aimerais beaucoup écouter vos comparatifs de mini aiguilles et de trio pour chaussettes.
    Très cordialement.
    Catherine.

    I believe you mentioned chiaGoo not good for magic loop. What needle do you prefer for this knitting. Great reviews- I’m getting ready to order my set

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  3 года назад +1

      Thank you. Well, many do magic loop with CG but I personally believe the inflexible cables stretch the joins too much which may create laddering. They do have the green swivel cables as well, tho.. Still, addi or Knitters pride are a better choice if you knit in the round a lot. Hiyahiya is nice as well, tho their lace tips are super sharp..they have more rounded ones.

      I use ChiaoGoo needles for magic loop and have no problems. I was surprised when Norman said they were not a good choice. And no way would I describe ChiaoGoo cables as "inflexible."

      Hm...that's a difficult topic because those are not freely available in a lot of countries. I think they are okayish...as most of their tools in fact. But not stellar. Here in Germany, you find their needles and tools in about every crafts store. But I do believe that addi has the better needles.

      Hey Courtney, you mean the cubics and stuff? Well, I definitely will consider it for the future. But as I'd have to buy them (and that's quite an investment), I'll keep that for later :P

    Wonderful information on the needles. I believe chiaogoo has connectors where you can use the smaller cables with the large needles and vise verse. I bought my connectors off Amazon. I have every interchangeable set they make I believe. My chiaogoo set is my go to but other people in the knitting group love addi. Like you mentioned it's what your personal like is. It was an awesome video thank you 🤗
