      Timely review. I have been intending to purchase a complete set for months... (preferably in a wood box with rose gold trim) though a pretty pink case may suffice. The significant cost means that I am putting *almost as much thought into brands as I did the naming my children. My hesitation emanates from the thought that needles from the $2 shop are just as effective. Moreover, is it possible to see a marked difference in quality between knits performed on a $2 set vs. a $200.00 set though I note comments about less snags with the Chiaogoo brand. Upon acquiring a professional set I shall keep my cheap needles: useful in unblocking the vacumn cleaner nozzle. These reviews are most helpful. I shall consider the experience(s) and opinion(s) of other knitters across all forums before making a final decision.

    There are lots of times I've wished I could combine the traits I love from different manufacturers to make the "perfect" needles, and I'm still wishing. I love Knitter's Pride needles - my favorites have always been the Royale (now, sadly, discontinued) and Symphonie Dreamz - but their cables aren't nearly as good as Chiao Goo. The new design for the cables for the Mindful interchangables is better, but even though they claim that they are memory-free, the larger ones aren't. I had a scarf that I needed a 60" circular for, and I decided to use the new cable (they fit the older needles!), and it stayed stubbornly coiled after I removed it from the package. I ended up going with shorter cables, joined, which worked fine. And I did notice the join - the yarn I was using was a type I refer to as "pre-split", and I found that yarn caught often enough that it was aggravating. I also wish that the screw-in type of connector wasn't the standard. The Addi Click connector is my preference, even though they aren't my favorite needle. So, my ideal set of interchangables would be many different types of needle materials that have a click fitting that connects to all the cables. I'd love the Chiao Goo style cable that truly doesn't stay coiled no matter the length. A knitter can dream, can't we? 😁 Thank you, Norm, for your very comprehensive review - it's very much appreciated!

      I don't like Chicagoo the yarn gets hung up where they connect and also when you are knitting with them they come apart from the cable very annoying to have to keep stopping and reconnect to the cable. I love my knitter's pride.

    • @larkmacgregor3143
      @larkmacgregor3143 Год назад +1

      @@claudinemcbride9646 Me, too, which is why I'd like to have the Chiao Goo cables with them (so no coiling) with the Addi Click connectors, which lock into place and *don't* unscrew. I have occasional trouble with the Knitter's Pride cables unscrewing, and the longer Mindful cables still have memory issues. The wire inside may be "memory free", but the plastic cover isn't. I still have to dunk anything longer than 32" in hot water and pull it taut until it cools, just like I have to do with the cables on my Royale fixed circulars.

    Chiaogoo's reluctance to say which particular alloys they use feels bad to me. People can have allergies like nickel allergies. For things your hands will be in contact with for a long time, like knitting needles, you should be able to confirm that you won't have a reaction to it.

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  Год назад +2

      I too felt it was a bit weak. I guess their reluctance can be explained that they don't trust people enough. I’ve been a fan of Chiaogoo’s Red Lace interchangeables for several years, but I agree that the fact that you can’t use the same size cable for all sizes of tips is a source of annoyance. And although everyone says that the tips have the size engraved on them, I’ll be darned if I’ve ever been able to find it. In those two respects, the Knitters Pride set has the advantage. Still, I’m used to CG, and I don’t see any compelling reason to ditch them in favor of something else.
    But I’m a little disturbed by CG’s lack of transparency with respect to business practices, materials, and ethical treatment of employees. I hadn’t thought of those issues before listening to this review. Are practices in China worse than those in India? I don’t know, but it’s something I want to consider further.
    Thanks for bringing all your observations to our attention. Great video, as always.

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  Год назад +1

      yeah, i don't see a reason to change if you have either set, not.
      As for working conditions. Well..the comparission between india and china is a difficult one because it kind of depends on the province, etc. There are some super horrible working conditions in china and india alike. Since we know literally nothing about CG, I would asume the worst - especially when it comes to the suppliers of the cables, pouches and smaller accessories, etc.
      India and China have similar legal basis (8 hours a day and max 44 hours per week China, 8 hours per day and max 48h per week in India). But those are seldom enforced - especially in China, where lots of smaller factories still employ 996 - 9 am to 9 pm, 6 days a week.

    I have both sets and the Knitters Pride is beautiful but my favorite of the 2 is ChiaoGoo because I was really disappointed that my yarn would always get caught in where the needle connects to the cord of Knitters Pride no matter how much you checked they were screwed in well which was really frustrating!

    I've always really liked the Chiao Goo needles,mainly for the cord. Ironically,the cord is the reason I rarely ever use them 😂
    Since I threw away and stipped watching tv 10 years ago I now often knit with my phone on my lap or next to me,usually following along with a pattern on yt. The cords for the Chiao Goo have steel in them and if it bumps the screen it's just like randomly touching it with my finger. And it ends up skipping my video around,closing out my page,all sorts of things! It's very annoying 😂 I now use the HiyaHiya set. I find the needles are very similar as far as the taper and point goes,the price is similar and I've had no problems with the plastic cords.
    I've never tried the Knitters Pride although I'd like to,along with the Lyyke(they're so pretty,especially the driftwood sets,,and I like saying the name even tho I have no idea what it means or even what language it's in😂
    Thank you for this very thorough and informative review,,you always do such a great job~!!

    2nd comment: for years, I used a set of Hiya Hiya interchangeables. The needles are fantastic, the cords/cables are easy to screw on and they stay connected MUCH better than my ChiaGoos. Much better. However, the Hiya Hiya cords are plastic and so have “memory” - they curl and the only way to relax them is to place them in boiling hot water, then place them in cold water, then stretch them out for awhile. Such a pain. So, I knit with my ChiaGoos exclusively these days.

    I have interchangeable needle sets by both ChiaoGoo and Knitter's Pride. I prefer my ChiaoGoo IC set by a wide margin.
    I've also learned that there are certain projects where using a fixed circular needle is preferable to using an interchangeable.
    These days I've been knitting a massive shlanket, a 43" square with a 260-stitch cast-on in fingering-weight yarn. I couldn't take a chance on an IC join not holding, so I'm using a ChiaoGoo Red Lace Size 3, 47" fixed circular needle instead. I'm more relaxed not having to check the joins on an IC needle.

    I have the cheapo multicoloured set from Amazon - got them for about £20. I'm sure they would not stand up to this level of scrutiny, but the cables look identical to the Chiagoo ones 😂 my set does come with the little plastic circle for tightening (I had no idea what that was for!) And the stoppers are the same kind as the Knitter's Pride (plastic, and crap). I just use an elastic band instead. I'm far from a professional knitter but I've been impressed with my set so far.

    It's a good thing there are so many different needles since we are all so different! I have many different sets but I love the Chiaogoo the best. Mostly because of the cords and joins. If doing magic loop for socks the Chiaogoo cords can't be beat!
    I did buy one Mindful round needle just to try them. The join was so poor my yarn kept getting caught and tearing so I had to throw them out. However my friend has a set of the Mindful interchangeable and she's had no problem with them.
    I also have Addi's, Knitters Pride Zing, and Knit Picks metal. I use them all for different projects but the Chiaogoo are still my favorites. I started out with a wood set from Knit Picks but the more I knit the more I realized I like metal much better so gave them to a friend.

    I enjoyed this very much, and appreciate all the time and effort this must have taken. I have both the 4 and 5 inch Chiaogoo sets plus accessories such as the grip pads and other extras, so I consider myself set for life. I love my needles, and for my style of sweater knitting, they are perfect for me. This review convinced me even more I made the right choice. I especially like what you pointed out about the slight difference in the tips. I think that little taper on the tip, where it is slightly cylindrical and then flares out on the Chiaogoo is what does it for me. I've never had my Chiaogoo needles come unscrewed, but the knitters pride bamboo ones I bought at Hobby Lobby when I was learning sure did. Those needles are pretty, but those cables stayed all spiraled like a slinky no matter what. If I ever have occasion to use a bamboo needle, and I doubt I will, I am happy to know I can get these new & improved different cables for them. Thank you again, you're a gem!

    It’s pretty easy to send a sample to a metallurgical lab and get a detailed analysis of its composition. Not cheap, but easy. The fact that they are not open with that information is a red flag. I wonder if someone did this already. One reason to have different materials for the two threaded ends is to prevent galling (seizing up). Typically you would want some sort of a lube on the threaded connectors if both are the same grade of SS to prevent this from happening. Ok, I’m done being a geek now. 😂

    Hi Norman, thanks so much for the thorough review! I have both sets and still can't really decide which one I like more. Mainly for the reasons that you have pointed out in terms of whether the cords swivel or not and if yarn gets caught in between the gaps. Needles wise, I don't feel too much difference since I have smaller hands. Only gripe I have about Chiaogoo is they have different cable sizes for large and small needles which complicate things. I end up having to buy extra accessories to use with different needle sizes.

    Thank you for your extremely, in depth, research into these two products. I use chaigoo and find them very light to knit with and the interchangeable cords and the connection very smooth. I did, however, need to buy one of the ‘Mini’ sets, in order to obtain shorter tips, which are ideal for knitting projects such as socks, negating the need of DPN’s. The Chiagoo set that Norman demonstrates is a full set, but a half set can be purchased and added to, at a later date. I can thoroughly recommend this product but at over £100, for a half set, it is an investment. Thank you, Norman, for your wonderful videos. Lynda (U.K.)

Also Ciao Goo are another made in China thing. Knitters Pride are made in India and provides Ethical workplace standards and fair wages. Indian stainless steel is quality cos my mum has stainless steel tumblers from india shop that been in daily use since 1976 and still good, I brought steel tumblers and mugs made in china thinking it will last long but unfortunately the tumbler cracked in a long line from top and mugs got holes in it, so I don't trust chinese steel quality
