"Mama was old at 35" hits so close to home with my own Mom and Grandma. The pictures don't lie...one was an old-school midwest farmwife and the other married to a world-class POS. That kind of stress ages you more than people realize at the time.

My great-grandfather was a steelworker who died two days after New Years in 1933. My grandmother and great-aunts made ends meet by sewing odds and ends for neighbors in the midst of the Depression. Grandma would try to wash and fold Saran wrap and foil in the 90's because of the deprivations of the Depression. This song hits close to home.

Written by Bob McDill, "Song of the South" was first recorded by Bobby Bare on his album "Drunk & Crazy" (1980). Johnny Russell released his version in 1981. Tom T. Hall and Earl Scruggs covered the song in 1982. Alabama covered the song in 1988 from their album "Southern Star" (1989), reaching number 1 on both the U.S. and Canadian country charts.

It's nice to hear the original and actually get all the lyrics. Alabama has a dramatic and well built anthem from it, while this original version simply screams authenticity.
