      Im picturing a 2wd version with just the horizontal spinner and more beef, that omniwheel-esque drive with a tombstone bar would be terrifying

    • @wristofkings
      @wristofkings 2 года назад +81

      @@Zerethon I think overhead spinner in the fashion of SOW or Bloodsport except with swerve drive would be pretty sweet. That way the weapon can protect the delicate parts of the bot and is dangerous from all angles. Self righting might become an issue though.

    • @22phastcars
      @22phastcars 2 года назад +41

      @TriVos Ahren this is a swerve drive. If you could balance, it could move any direction with just one wheel. Adding a second wheel allows it to rotate. 3rd is just more stable/redundant.

    • @TeamWhackjob-Official

    • @Julia_and_the_City
      @Julia_and_the_City 2 года назад +7

      @@wristofkings It would also have none of the benefits though. The reason to use swerve drive at all is to allow you to rotate your bot towards the opponent whilst moving in a different direction. SOW and Bloodsport don't need to do this, they're effective no matter from which side they are attacked.

  • @colinmeier8140
    @colinmeier8140 2 года назад +115

    Triple crowns drive is called a swerve drive, and is actually very commonly used in other robot competitions, except battlebots, they are fragile, and heavy. All it could take is one hit to completely shut a wheel down because a gear is just as exposed as the wheel itself, it’s just impractical

    The best fighting robots are usually the least complex, less things to break, this is why Valkyrie is so good, it's litterally just a blade on wheels. Triple Crown doesn't look like it even knows what it wants to be - a wedge, a spinner, an overly complex wheel system - a great design for maybe moving boxes around a warehouse but this is a robot fighting competition.

      The whole structure of Battlebots is pretty illogical. It's styled as a tournament, but does next to nothing to make it competitive. Teams are punished for introducing an interesting gimmick and then forced to stick with it the whole season. It's more like the WWE than MMA, but it puts on airs like its a real competition.
      Actual fighting sports have amateur fighters work their way up in the field until they prove they are capable of face a proven fighter and they don't let heavy weights pound down on middleweights. I feel like you could easily segregate the field by weapon class and have champions for each like the champions of different weight classes or titles, and then have them face off in mixed fights and exhibitions as well.
      Triple crown could be a really interesting control bot, but to be competitive is has to be a spinner and due to its unique drive it can never be a really good spinner. Worse its forced to face an excellent spinner which just wastes time and money.

    • @Frosty_tha_Snowman
      @Frosty_tha_Snowman 2 года назад +3

      @@Jinsoku440 Huge is a cool gimmick, the old rotator was pointless, the new one makes sense, lockjaw I don't feel like really fits this category, but Fusion does - Fusion works because it can use either a horizontal or vertical, whichever it needs, but it sacrifices having more efficacy with one weapon, in order to have 2 weapons that keep it from being countered - they fail to realize that in doing so, the opponent also has a guaranteed counter against it. If a vertical spinner counters the opponents wedge, then the opponent can just go after their horizontal portion - it would make much more sense to just have a bot with 2 interchangeable configurations, 1 mount for a vertical spinner, & 1 for horizontal, that way, they can change it accordingly in order to counter their opponent, while maximizing the effectiveness of each weapon, and not sacrificing weight that could otherwise be put into armor. It's just not practical how it is.. it's something a kid would come up with, and of course it wins some fights, but that doesn't mean it couldn't easily be better, it's just because it is a combat robot built by people with experience and know-how.

    • @Jinsoku440
      @Jinsoku440 2 года назад

      @@Frosty_tha_Snowman you missed a bit of my point. Early Lockjaw was a spring loaded crusher/flipper; and REALLY fked up a few 'bots back in the day, RotatŔ had decent success in the off season (same with Counter Revolution, who actually beat a version of Tombstone in Robogames) and was known to whip a bot or two with that right hook. And HUGE is not just a cool gimmick, it's a direct engineering counter to the current meta, from weapon height, to construction they eat *most* of the verts alive. You start with a concept, then iron out the details through trial and error; that's just kind of how engineering works? 💁🏿‍♂️

    Its complex for sure, but chomp 2 has to be the most complicated bot ever built, and just like chomp 2, triple crown proves, that complex isn't necessarily, better. you have to sacrifice to much in armor and weapon weight to add these super complex systems for them to ever leave you with strong contender. While i can appreciate the work that went into making it work, you sadly can see that it doesn't have a active weapon that is going to do any damage to a more traditionally built 250lb bot, its weapon looked more like that of a 125 lb bot. the weapon is way out of its weight class. The omni directional wheels of shatter do exactly the same thing, and dont sacrifice nearly as much weight, and are not anywhere close to being as exposed. This would have done very well in robot wars where the weapons and armor are not nearly as strong as battlebots.

    Triple crown should've had horizontal spinners between the wheels on all sides, that were also thick, wide, and tall so that almost skimmed the ground and its own wheels. It would be good defense against an undercutter and land powerful blows. Maybe on the outside of the wheels there could've been wedges just so that the entire outside of the bot would be protected.
