The Coolest Truck Battery Upgrade You Never Knew About! (Bolt In Supercapacitor!)

  • Sometimes you come across crazy ideas that make you scratch your head... sometimes they are just too weird to work and other times they DO work and really well at that. This is one of those times. I have no idea why diesel trucks especially don't come with this combination from the factory already. My 2007 Duramax LBZ was always slow to crank relative to a normal gas powered truck...especially when it was really cold sometimes it sounds like it wont even spin over... but not anymore!

      Completely agree- would love to see this configuration from the factory. This technology definitely seems to have an advantage over a conventional battery - especially for those of us in colder climates that deal with the sluggish startups after sitting overnight in the single digits. Love the content and the way you guys deliver it, thanks for sharing what you guys do!

    This is something that never crossed my mind, but makes a lot of sense looking at it now. A capacitor (or bank of capacitors) suits the application better than a battery- seeing as a capacitor has a much better ability to discharge.. and that characteristic is already being used on a ton of equipment from board level stuff all the way up to capacitor start compressors and fans.

  • @iknklst
    @iknklst 2 года назад +22

    The best part of using a capacitor to start, especially starting any larger motor is that you don;t put the strain of both amperage and voltage draw on your regular batteries. If you maintain your charging system they will last significantly longer.
    When you're replacing four Group 31 batteries every fifth year instead of every third year in a commercial vehicle you're saving a lot of money,
    The Newell would benefit from that upgrade.

    Pretty cool. I added an aux battery (Optima) to my '15 Silverado 1500 5.3 with a Cole Hersee 48530 isolation solenoid so I could run the main power to several loads separately like a subwoofer and inverter. It also parallels the batteries in case the main is discharged through a switch. The truck charges the main first, and then will parallel charge the aux. When the truck is shut down, will automatically isolate the two. This looks great for having some extra cranking amps for the diesel.

    Mitchell, thank you for the continued phenomenal content. My surgery recovery has gone backwards and not doing good. I'm the one who found your channel earlier this year when I bought my Yukon XL, I got rid of it for a 6 speed Acura TL, well my body said I cannot physically drive a manual and my wife's car blew a brake line so I picked up an 04 Suburban LT. The issue I'm having is the heated seats turn off after 30 seconds, if I push the brake pedal the AWD light on the switch flickers and it acts weird. It does have the adjustable pedals. And yes it's an AWD, not a selectable 4wd. MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and Logan and your family. And a happy new year brother

  • @anthonycoleman632
    @anthonycoleman632 8 месяцев назад +1

    I just got this video today and I just want to say I see you noticed how much faster your vehicle starts using a capacitive battery than a lead acid or AGM. You may now already know that capacitors have a lower internal resistance than lead acid. Lower internal resistance means current moves much freely and faster with a punch. Capacitors can charge just as fast but to be on the safe side keep using the provided led lamp, this slows down the charge to a safe rate of charge. I'm new to your channel and I support you for trying new ideas. As for car/truck audio, bass notes requires large amounts of power to be delivered fast(capacitors can do just that).

    • @Stapleton42
      @Stapleton42  8 месяцев назад

      My truck did start a tick faster. It is also very very good at jumpstarting other vehicles. I paired it with a power master 225 alternator and it is a beast. Only issue is occasionally the terminals would wiggle a bit loose and crank slightly slower.. but I have fixed that

    • @craigboedeker4368
      @craigboedeker4368 7 месяцев назад

      with the capacitors do you have to worry about unhooking the capacitor (battery), will it shock you like a traditional capacitor or can you just unhook your battery cables and be fine?@@Stapleton42

    I've been using a d3400 and an sb500 for 3 years + in my stereo car, The Cap Will Loose voltage over time if you don't run the vehicle or keep a tender on it. its slow but it happens. if you don't have the two isolated from one another it will drag down the battery voltage, eventually harming your float voltage. FYI if you did not already know. Also if memory serves me, that cap can dump up to 10K amps, and that d3400 is 1000cca and 3300 max

    truckers have been using ultra caps since they came out circa 2010 to save money on gas by taking the load off the alternator. makes sense with a 24v system where youre starting out with multiple 12v batteries. they do cause issues with leakage if they are left alone... their stored energy basically leaks out into the air/space much more quickly than a lead acid.
    if ur not driving ur car every day, capacitors are probably a bad idea... not having them isolate correctly and draining ur car battery is basically what happens to everyone who ghetto rigs a sub in their turnk and cant figure out why their car battery always drains... atleast im assuming the amp has a big cap in it that doesnt self isolate.
    also... basically all lead acid batteries are made in the us in Missouri and Indiana by one company. i forget their name but they mfg all the brands people spend hours choosing between at the autoparts store/walmart. lead is the most recycled thing in the world... except for maybe roads depending on how you count stuff. its inherently hard to ship and the acid they use is cheap to make on site but expensive to ship so its a unique example of a mfg sector that has and probably always will stay local in the us.

    That's very cool! Skidoo has been doing something very similar with their "SHOT" electric start system for 3 or 4 years. They don't use a battery at all just the super capacitor, they have the advantage of a pull start when the capacitor dies.

      Doesn’t shot not have a starter? It uses the stator windings or something. I rode my friends 850 with it and it was pretty badass.

      @@georgewilde8465 yes, no dedicated starter and a super capacitor. Very good on weight and a great idea!

    That actually was a pretty impressive difference... I'd like to see if it would be the same on an extremely cold day. Also 10/10 sound effect skills 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 What will we see for your next trick!?!?!?

    Maybe do a with and without capacitor start comparison with a bright light connected to the 12V lighter socket and compare the two levels of "dimness".

    So long as you have the right voltage on the cap. The cap will just reduce the voltage sag during starting. Also the cap can be charged with a lower voltage then the Nominal car battery voltage in other words if your car battery is low it will still charge the cap to a usable output.
    Yeah caps are cool. There downside is they self discharge very quickly witch can lead to them killing your agm/flooded battery if you leave them connected.
