As a ASE mechanic and mecp certified advanced level tech I can say that if you are pulling that many amps that your alternator is slowing and causing your belt to slip you are definitely pulling at least 110% of that alternator you need a bigger alt and need to look at the belt, tensioner pulley to make sure it is applying enough tension to the belt so it doesn’t slip
And keep up the good work on these videos very informative and very easy for newbies to follow. Great work and thank you.

Yeah thats definitely a good question. Bc I'm not 100% sure if I'm gonna need a second battery, but first I'll be upgrading to a 300a Alt and then a better battery to start off. And Hopfully that's enough, but if not I'll be in this conversation myself.

DonnRonn Bagger I feel like it’s all subjective to your system and what type of power you are pulling so everyone’s is gonna be different but, I bet another battery with a high output amp wouldn’t hurt lol

    • @williamkillingsworth2619
      @williamkillingsworth2619 4 года назад +29

A super cap will charge and discharge faster than a battery but won’t have as much actual energy storage.
This cap would likely keep the voltage steadier, as long as the alternator can keep up.
the battery would lose voltage during big draws but over all have much more stored energy, kind of a tortoise and hare scenario.
It depends always on whats being used and how it is being used. Remember you need energy to charge the cap and the battery so the Alternators output is key too how much power u can create over a given time. Batteries and caps all store energy they just do it in different ways, The alternator is the only thing creating energy

@@Des420 yeah what I was thinking was after putting in on a 300a alt, I just wanted to get the best possible battery that I can, not sure of what my exact needs would be right now, but from that theory, I'm wondering if I will still need another battery in the back, or a cap, or would my system be fine with the 300a alt and a good battery something with over 1k cold cranks, I'd have to look into Ah and all that to see what is my best option. But I'm hoping the 300 alt will be key to not needing a million different pieces of equipment you know

Back in the day we used caps to save the alternator. Older cars often had like 40amp max alternators. With a big amp they used to pull more power then the battery and alternator could handle, especially over long periods of time. A decent capacitor was often used if you didn't like replacing alternators or push starting your car

I made my own up to 16V 500 farad capacitor bank using 6 3V 3000 farad cells connected in series without any electronics 2 years ago. I put all that in a foam padded plywood box and just hooked up in parallel with my car battery. My car never has a problem cranking over and I have no voltage drop at all with my current 1000W audio setup. I can start my car several times without the battery using this too so it doubles as a jump start booster pack.

I understand why you need to explain it to the average person, so that they can understand. It's all about capacity. All capacitors can accept a charge & discharge extremely fast. Some faster than others. But you throw that many farad's in a capacitor Bank, backed up with voltage regulation and Bluetooth. You got plenty of juice to make your Bass Thunder hard!

As a newbie to sound systems. I bring my industrial electrical experience and diy electrical systems knowledge to the game. My initial assumption has been to reduce vdrop. So I use quality cables/bars, and short runs. So taking this approach. My vehicle becomes the remote generator, and I just built a 600 continuous amp LiFePO⁴ 12v pack with a converter bank for the 14v max of the amplifier. This system is probably overkill but I wanted surge and continuous capabilities so that the voltage just never drops. Running this in a crown vic pi p71 with an upgraded alternator for my other stuff keeps the pack full. I never see dimming or anything weird but I will say the $4,000 price tag for my particular setup is way overkill.
I reclaimed and built into a pack some 60ah lips cells into a pack. I took 16 of these cells for a bigger capacity but 1p will work. The bms on the pack is for 250amps, it effectively does the same as the super fat iron pack for the subs. Kicker is it only cost $400 to make and is next to the amp with a 0awg running from the battery into it for charging. The amp will stay powered longer than the door speakers. I also built a bypass after watching this to allow me to jump my own car instead of having the diodes.

I run a 3 farad cap on my system I’m running 2 sdr skar 12’s and a 1100 watt Memphis class d tuned with a o scope. I also have a platinum agm battery and big 3 done. No problems at all. I stay at 12+ volts in the super low notes 13+ normally no matter how loud and long I run it. I think comparing the two that you did is still kinda misleading to new comers. It all depends on what subs and amp you are running for how much power you need. In my case there is no need to buy a 400 dollar super bank. I’m not running that much power. Doing everything else correctly helps the most like battery, big 3, proper grounds, proper sub wiring. I’m just referring to the smaller systems like I have that get played a lot. I’m not doing demos or hair tricks just personal enjoyment in my work car. So comparing “apples to apples” as you say could still be confusing to new to systems people.

Yea it wouldn't matter if you had a cap regardless. Your battery is pretty much an ultra capacitor. Especially if you have a nice quick discharge agm one like yourself. One farad is good for roughly 50wl watts. After that it's useless untill it charges again. Which it then does, sapping strength from your amp, then when it's charged, it finally shoots it's little load and it starts the cycle over and over and over. Getting a capacitor for a low power system makes no sense because you wouldn't need it. The phrase is "one farad per 1k rms" if your not pushing that why even bother? You're better off either getting a better alternator, or battery and then upgrading the stock wiring. If youre pushing over 1000 rms I'd say then you would need an ultra cap, because like I said one farad is good for ~50 watts vs bam ultra cap with dozens of times the capacity of the shitty $120 fuse you just bought for your low powered amp.

Not everyone can afford these HUGE ultracap systems. Rather than buying those crappy 1/2 farad capacitors, buy a Maxwell BMOD0058 E016 C02 - This is 58 farads, tiny so can fit in anywhere! I've used one in my car for the last 5 years now (mainly to help start the engine). It prolongs the life of my car battery and as it stabilises the voltage system, components like bulbs etc will last longer too!

I was an Auto Tech. A Dead Battery acts like a Short. Dropping the Voltage. Lower V Equals Higher Amps. The 4 Farad would have done a better job if wired directly to the Battery. Instead of what you did. Years ago I had a Profile 100x2 amp. Bridged Mono. Kept Cutting Out when the Sub hit. Checked with a Voltmeter. On Battery Power, Volts Dropped to around 10V. A 1 Farad Cap recommended by Crutchfield Fixed the problem. Also, Caps work as Noise Filters. Blocking the 60 Hz hum from the Alternator.

I’ve had this cap for 4 months and happy with it so far I have it paired with two north star batteries but looking back I wish I knew more about lithium and it’s cost to power ratio first before I bought the NS’s but they’re still great batteries despite the fact, but the lithium would be cheaper $900 worth of NorthStar vs $700 Lithium.

Back in the day I had a Geo Tracker with a system in it and a BatCap 800 to help, I didn't even know it, I had a bad battery lead for a few weeks and was cranking and running the car pretty much exclusively off of the BatCap. Didn't even realize it until I managed to discharge the BatCap and when I checked my leads found I had one that was barely hanging on.

some of you are still missing what a cap does, these hybrid caps are not the same deal... the 4fd cap may not have a large pool but it does have a FAST charge, Discharge rate, and this buffers a system to help not kill an alternator... the rule of thumb was always 1f per 1kw... but here is the problem, you need an alternator to keep up... so if you have to say a stock system, you really need to stay somewhat in the area of the alternators range... even a 1000w amp will eat into a lead battery with a cap on it... but say a 500f cap will let it be eaten before the lead battery, but still it all comes down to how long you are going to let their batteries/supercaps and caps recharge from the alternator. they both have 1 function and sorta do the same, but the cap is cheaper and if you plan to stick under 1000w, the 1 to 4f cap will do just fine

Knowledgeable video. Man I sure need one of those. I'm so tired of getting my battery recharged. Obviously I'm new to today's audio scene. So with covid and lack of work I figured I'd take a chance with some money I had put away to upgrade a stock system so that I could actually enjoy my music. You know, something uplifting. Got robbed on my install so now I'm not sure who to trust and what price is fair especially on my budget. So thanks for putting this out because I would be happy to just hear what I have with a car that actually starts. Good job.

Right now I'm pushing a kicker ZX2500 .1 and when installed the amp has a 300 amp fuse right near car battery. I'm pushing 2000w X 2 so I have two 12in Skar D3s which contain dual voice coils and these coils are rated at 4 Ohms each and I have them wired in such a way that I'm drawing 2 ohms which is the minimum my amplifier can handle. Are these subwoofers receiving 2000 Watts each when max is 2500watts. They also have dual stacked magnets and a vented voice coil through the back of the magnet right in the centre and this seems to keep them cool but when running for an hour or more at 70% volume the magnets heat up but not to a burning the skin temperature or anything near that is that normal? The amplifiers Peak states that it is 5000 Watts or 2500 watts RMS and I have it turned up to about 80%. Bass Boost +4db and X-over set to 80Hz. I'm using a 20farad capacitor and wondering if that is good enough for this setup. I have much more to do like the door speakers need to be upgraded and an amplifier added to push the door speakers and I want to get a 4 cubic ft box for the 2 skar 12 inch subwoofers as right now they're running in a 3.2 cubic foot box. I can dim the headlights easily when the volume is up past half but do you think the Diming is a big issue even though I have a 20farad or actually dual 10farad capacitors that are inside a metal frame and have blue LED backlighting and also a voltage metre that I can watch the charge of the car and Battery as I'm playing music and get an idea of where my voltage sits and I've never seen it drop below 13.8 V and this is after an hour or two of playing at max volume. I'm asking this because my voltage metre stays steady at 14.4 V when playing normal music at a regular sound level but I can get it to drop to about 13.8 V when I have my subwoofers turned all the way up. Was just wondering if you can tell me if I'm risking ruining anything or is what I have set up doing fine and will keep doing me fine as long as I don't get in a car accident and smash it all up. The subwoofers are 2500w Max/per subwoofer so am I underpowering or overpowering by giving them 2000 W each or 4000 W total? Also I'd love to win that super cap that you're showing and I've been following you since you started out going to the car shows and competitions and just wanted to say I'm a big fan and I love what you do! you bring me joy bro, for every video you post i get a positive "charge" your knowledge "amps" me up. Don't ever give up your hobby your great at what you do and you teach the noobs like me what not to do hahaha. I never knew as much as I do now I didn't know much other than I love bass and my friends that had systems in their cars always gave me dreams of having my own one day and now I do and I must say thanks to you so far it's been running smoothly and things I'm not sure about I take to a shop down the road which is famous for its installations and knowledge in this local area and usually to get in to have something done they are backed up at least about 30 days and that's with three or even four workers going at a time all day. Thanks to my stubbornness I have gone about a few things the wrong way and messed up a few items so you can say I've learned a few things the hard way but thankfully it's never being anything too expensive that I have destroyed so no worries my friend. Couldn't blame you anyway because you are a teacher not the one who told me to cross the positive and negative wire and watch the Sparks Fly LOL no I didn't really do that but now I like to research ahead of time like you do. I learned that from watching you the fact that it's easier to research and do properly rather than research nothing and screw everything up.

I did not know of this product. How might it compare with a LiFe Battery and deep cycle demands? Seems like it might be quite the cake taker across the board. It would be great if you could address this inquiry because you're motivated entertaining and thorough. Plenty of automotive applications as solar power systems are installed stationary and mobile. It would enhance all of our understanding. Rock out when you clock out my good man!

One thing to take into account, not all capacitors are created equal. There are no compliance organizations that ensure the buyers are getting what is advertised. Sadly, many are just shy of an empty shell. Just as many amplifiers on the market cannot reach the advertised RMS ratings, neither can capacitors. I've found 1 Farad capacitors that literally have 30,000uF of capacitance which is 3% of their advertised storage capability. A good quality capacitor works but you will usually pay for it. Ultimately your system will use more power due to the greater efficiency in power delivery. That's not a Band-Aid for too small of a battery or alternator though.

Note to people who won’t shut up about a second battery or a larger alternator. A capacitor isn’t made to deliver more power or to increase capacity by a large amount. It’s only supposed to hold enough capacity to smooth voltage drops/ spikes and reduce the likelihood of an amp messing with the cars voltage. Google “Smoothing capacitor”. That’s basically what these things are.

I've always used a cap in my builds. I've always considered a capacitor to
be like a *"shock absorber"* in the system's frequency flow, letting it build up before
being used, like a quickly discharging battery.
