I live in the Netherlands and there is actually a thing going on now that would at first seem totally contradictionary to fight rising waterlevels: letting the place flood. Mostly grassland that is normally inhibited by cows. These areas are usually "polders" which once belonged to the water. By letting these lands flood during heavy rain/high water levels we can keep the cities dry. Then when waterlevels drop, these areas can harbor cows once more.
I actually once had to do a project on secondary school in which we had to make a plan to create more room for the river, taking into account how much the water levels would drop by that, what the effects were on the area. (villages in the area for example) and possible recreation that would be made by changing waterways.
This probably won't help if the water rises 3 meters or so , but I think this shows how innovative people can be if all else fails. :)

Nobody in a coastal city will take flooding seriously until it's such an immediate threat, that no amount of money can fix the problem. This is just how rich people roll... and drown... throughout history.

Most likely he lives in the middle of Zeeland, such as the biggest urban area (Vlissingen/Middelburg). That means he pretty much lives near all of the delta works.

+Cadde Computes have a surprizingly low power output. Just using 10 incandecent lightbulbs (And 10 is not enough to light up a house) is more than the amount of power used by a desktop. ANYWAYS, they don't get to control where the power actually comes from, and they probably cant afford to buy solar panels.

+Cadde I would just like to point out that you too are using the Internet. Also, yes I use my tablette for everything (Netflix, homework, textbooks, entertainment, etc.) so I'm wasting way less resources than if it were all separate. Furthermore, in this day in age, technologies such as these are very useful and almost necessary for many. I also try to limit my footprint in other ways: public transit and biking, using natural light whenever possible, only using the AC when absolutely necessary, being a park of my schools green team, recyling and compost, etc. Plus, I unplug my tab when it's done charging as not to waste too much energy.

+Deebo Molina I foresee too many complications to make it worthwhile. Imagine a storm with 100mph winds could easily blow it away. It would also consume way too much energy to work against gravity. Transportation to and from the city would be very difficult, since it would probably move too much to build stable bridges, and most workers couldn't afford to commute via helicopter twice a day. And where would the sewage pipes go? Where would potable water flow in from? In conclusion: no, this would not work.

But I am curious as to why ways to actually stop or slow the rising sea levels isn't a bigger concern. I know you want these videos to be short, but I would think prevention is a higher priority. I guess it's easier to find stopgap solutions than to tackle the root cause.
Yes, I answered my own question.
+Juil A more likely answer to that question is that both are concerns (stopgap measures and real long-term solutions). There seems to be a disconnect with a lot of people that if we're putting resources toward temporary fixes, we're ignoring the larger issues and making them worse. What is actually happening is that both short- and long-term solutions are necessary and both are being worked on. The reason you hear more about temporary fixes and "band-aids" is that we will always need to go through a handful before everything we need to do to truly solve the big problem can be done (or even figured out). If you get a very deep cut, you should go to the hospital to get it stitched up and professionally treated., but on your drive there you would be smart to do what you can to slow the bleeding.
Connor Battilana I agree with you, but I was speaking more in the context of this video. It was sponsored by an insurance company, which basically has a business model dependent on impending danger.
And the same issue applies in general: there is more money to be made in the short-term solution, so oil lobbies will pour money into the government, which takes money out of long-term sustainability, and only accelerates the death spiral we're in.

So... geo thermal drill holes that we pump sea water into and use the steam to produce electricity with while at the same time producing cloud layers that reflect more infrared light, thus reducing global temperatures and giving the ice caps a chance to rebuild/grow, thus decreasing sea levels once again.
Granted I dont know how we'd deal with the salt build up and poisonous gasses produced from melting salts (industrial factory filters?) or how the hot air would effect global weather patterns, most of the excess heat could probably be used for heating houses but a temperature increase of a few degrees over an area can have pretty huge rammifications like tornados and storms.
Still, whenever the question of clean energy comes up the only viable options I can see being implemented with our current technology and in time to halt our influence on the weather would be geo thermal and those tidal pistons they envisioned putting on cargo ships when they dock (the flow lifts the ship that has a bar that's connected to a geared, pump like system on the docks so as the ebb drops the ship back down you have potentially several hundred tons of energy per ship).
These two systems are something we have the tech to build and can afford to mass produce as things stand today, granted you might have to use fresh water for the geo thermal drill holes or that graphite, heat conducting wire they recently came up with to make it work.
There are two other options I can see work as well but the cost makes it so that the international community simply wont take the expense to have it done.
The first one being the gigantic turbines they suggested putting in places like the strait of gibraltar, the sea water rushes in on the top and out at the bottom constantly and thus produce enough energy to power all of Europe and parts of northern Africa, but again, the cost and engineering feats required makes it unlikely to be realised in our lifetime.
The second idea I came across was to use the worlds hottest regions (around the equator) to build massive solar plants (uses heat to warm oil and use the steam to run turbines, not the panels most ppl are used to), if made big enough these could easily power the entire earth, but again the co-operation of so many world powers, the cost, the engineering feat of not only building the plants but also the maintenance costs and so on makes this another one I dont see ever being fulfilled.
So... unless someone can point me in another direction the only options I see being feasible are geo thermal and wave/tidal based.

If the ice on for instance Greenland melts, the local gravity will diminish (because less mass, a cubic kilometer of ice is a LOT of mass) leading to a lowering of the sealevel. And also because of less mass, the crust will bounce back, also (relatively) lowering the sealevel, so if the Greenland ice melts, the Dutch sealevel might not rise at all.

Hey i have an idea incase we run out of water, plz tell me if there are any mistakes: if we run out of fresh water cant we just boil salt water? the salt will stay in the whatever you're using to boil it and seal it with something so the vapor that comes out will become water again when the area cools down. So basicly boil salt water in sealed place = free salt and water :D does this work?

+Kevin Huang sure you may boil water but imagine boiling all all your drinking water everyday for the rest of your life as well as the water you use for showering, washing dishes, etc. It adds up overtime. If the country took care of it, they would need huge amounts of heat and electricity to boil insane amounts of water which can hurt the economie. It's not impossible, but it's safe to say it would be far cheaper just to find ways to preserve what we have.

Since water can't just appear from _literally_ nothing, is it the bottom of water sources that are rising as well? so that there is no extra water needed for it to rise? Because I don't think that a lake bottom that stays the same could randomly just let the water raise a few meters, unless its the rain water doing so, in which, wouldn't a water source lose a lot of water?
