yeah! sometimes I don't know a word in my first language (Portuguese) but I know it in English and I feel happy because I know it in the other language, but when it happens the opposite I feel frustrated.
yeah, that's true. i am fluent in english which is suppose to be my second language but idk much in my native language (urdu/hindi) and yet i wanna learn japanese (any fellow weebs/otaku here?). wow! i think i filled my plate with more than i can eat!
Iam a non-native English speaker and I am in English learning process. And this is my first video of TED helps me relize that t can fully understand without subtitle ♥️. Thanks a lot.
I just wanted to say thank you to all of you for your awesome messages! The main reason I wanted to do this talk was to help you and others like you all around the world to feel the confidence you deserve to feel. I know that you've spend years and years studying English at school, and all you really wanted to do was speak, communicate, listen and understand and have others understand you. TED gave me this opportunity to tell you just trust yourself, whatever your level is, because with the right attitude you have what it takes right now. Please feel free to reach out to me if you need more support. Thank you again for watching.
I loved this talk! I’m from Argentina (Spanish is my first language). I’m a certified English teacher. So, you can imagine that, being a non-native English TEACHER, I always struggle with the feeling that I need to sound perfect and make no mistakes in English (even though I make mistakes or don’t remember words in my own language but that feels totally normal). So, whenever I have to communicate with a native English speaker, I feel anxious because I focus on how I’m supposed to perform. Now, you gave me something to think about!
Omg huge thanks to you, I'm currently learning to speak English and I have the same problem I'm too focusing on my grammar and afraid that I will make a mistake. Then ended up not saying anything...
this is the fourth time i listened to your talk. How interesting it is. i love it And you help me a a lot with my English . In the past i was too shy to talk in English but now I feel more confident ( i still make mistakes :< ) THANK YOU A LOT 33333 Love from Viet Nam
I love this ted talk video im frm india and i have been trying to get fluent in english but the fear of judgement holds me back i always get conscious about what mistake and grammatical errors im making while speaking or do i structuring the sentences in the right way coz i think im getting judged by my english vocab and all those grammatical stuff but what i need to focus on was told in this video and i think if anyone who can read and write in english can definitely be able to speak in it else they weren't been able to write or read as well so thank you for your outstanding and practical speech its sort of raised my confidence level up im extremely flattered that i found out this ted video
She is really right. Many people focus on their pronunciation and grammar. They don't focus on the listeners. Languages are to communicate not need to be flawless.
But if your pronunciation is wrong , how can you make sense to the listener ? I agree that the accents and grammar is not a big deal in English or any other languages but the correct pronunciation does matter. ( Just my personal opinion )
@@oliviawilson485 yes, you are right. Your pronunciation should be correct but you don't need to be have a perfect accent. Because language are just for communicate with each other. If you have a your country's accent but your accent can communicate with people, it's ok. Right?
that's a pretty common advice for people who have social anxiety actually. it turns out that learning style in schools is merely damaging your mental health
I learned English by myself because I liked it,I didn't care about grammar or being perfect I just talked and talked until I learned it...I'm learning Korean now 😄 trust yourself I'm sure you can do it
I have learned English for 11 years, but now i cannot communicate with ppl fluently. At my school, i were taught only grammar and vocabulary, so my listening and speaking skills were so weak. As I become a freshman at a university specializing in languages, i think that i have to try my best and i'll practice English more. Thanks for your motivating speech. I love this so much!

I am thirty years old. From vietnam. I have been learning english for a long time. i started learning english when i am in high school. But my english was not improved very much. I have ever thought about giving up learning english. Until two years ago, i found the greatest method to learn english. My english is improving every single day. That method is to watch videos and films in english as much as possible. Today i still do not believe that i can say and listen english . that is a miracle for me.
cool. I found the method that works for me. and it's playing a game. kind of strategic game that creates stress for me to speak and write during the war. deal with people, make an agreement, etc
We are the same. I have been learning English since I was in elementary school and now I am taking English as my major in college, but I still afraid of being judge by people. I am overthinking, and afraid of my grammar, my spelling, and my pronunciation too much, so it makes me lack of practice. Since I am in holiday I try to spend my time watching video in English like talk show of Jimmy Fallon, and force my self to drop a comment in English.
1. "Don't focus on yourself, focus on result that's you want to achieve." 2."English not art to be masterd, English just a tool to use to get result." These are best advice for me to changing my English learning life. Thanks.
I should have this thought about my Japanese, once I have the opportunity to go to Japan my hopes are that I'll be in company with people who only want to communicate in Japanese. Many people in Japan like to take the chance of speaking English with foreigners.
This is the natural way we need to learn English in the academy. It's hard for a student don't get bored when a teacher's speech is about grammar or theoric. So, I've been grateful to you and this channel.
i agree, sometimes we lose the main goal, and get punched by side effects, so we need to remind this video and focus on main goal! it's really important life attitude!
I am Chinese, the same as most of other chinese students. We have learn English for more than 10 years. But we still can't speak or write Englisn. Because we are afaid of mistakes. Now because of the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia, I can't go back to work. I have stay in hometown for 30 days. so I decided to catch this opportunity to improve my English reading and writing skills. Inspired by the Japanese friend, So I try to write down this words in English
And speaking skills? what if you create a wpp group with people that wants to improve their english and don't know people to practice with? i need something like this.
I'm a Malaysian English-learner, this video is really helpful for me to improve my confident ! Every time I speak English to my friends, I always like"Is my expressions well? Did I have any grammar mistakes?"I just cannot control myself to not be thinking negatively. But after watching this video ,I will definitely change myself to be a more confident . Terima kasih!
Right, and this is true not only in connection to speaking a foreign language, but in any given context; when communicating, focus on the other person, and on the desired outcome. Not on yourself.
As a Malaysian, she express the accurate situation in Malaysia while speaking English, we just scare our grammar is wrong, our accent is weird, and afraid of speaking English. Now I know that I should focus on the results and effectiveness of English communication, Thanks Marianna!
@@Adnan25048 Me, I having difficulties to understand slang from Bangladesh, India and Arab country. Im a customer service and I have to deal with customer from here
From that video i can get conclusion, if someone want to speak English language fluently don’t be afraid to show you language skill and stop worrying about how you sound. It’s okay to make a mistake, it’s makes you better when you learn it
Okay people, here is a long list of methods I've used to learn any new language. I hope this helps! -text/talk to any chatbot in target language(also helps if you're shy to talk to ppl) -Watch RUclipsrs in target language -read in target language(books, children stories, news, poetry, quotes) -listen to music in target language -have conversation with yourself in target language -change phone language -watch cartoons in target language -watch tv series/ movies in target language -write stories in target language -write songs/poetry in target language -watch podcast in target language -think in target language -pretend to be the first humans to speak language (E.g. look at the clouds and pretend you gave it the name) -play games in target language -associated words with feelings -associate words with pictures in your head -watch daily conversations in target language on youtube -listen to songs in target language -apply target language to hobbies/interests(e.g workout videos in french, guided meditation in Spanish, art DIY with German instructions) -write journal in target language -use analogies -find interview/get to know me questions and answer in target language -exercise to videos in target language -watch tutorial videos of any kind in target language -use captions in target language if available. Good luck!!!
Во и я так же окружающим говорю, когда они начинают придираться к мелким грамматическим ошибкам и прочим неверно употребленным формам, будто они real native speakers. =)))
I studied the English language for 12 years during my whole childhood education and still I wasn't able to communicate, let alone write a single coherent sentence. It all changed when I made a friend from the UK and she kind of made me comfortable with speaking English. Before I realized it, I graduated college (Bachelor's Degree) and when I gave my interviews for Software Developer jobs (they are usually held in English), I was speaking more fluently and comfortably than my interviewer which was so surprising for me because even now, I don't know a single grammar rule and yet I can clearly process my thoughts in English. It has become more of an intuitive thing rather than something that I need to study for or something. After realizing all of this, I have decided to start learning Italian and I am going to replicate this whole process again so wish me luck xD PS: I have started providing English content writing services and it's been awesome since then. My clients are usually from English speaking countries and they are happy with what I provide. I never thought I would get so far in English so if you feel stuck, always remember you can do it
I studied Spanish my whole education (11 years, 1 year I was required to learn French). It wasn’t until after graduating with my bachelor’s degree when I started speaking with patients who spoke Spanish when I actually got to exercise speaking it with people. And speaking slang because in school you only learn what is taught in the textbook! I’m going to keep trying to get better at speaking it because it feels like a whole new world now. Though I’ve been impressed that I still know all the words I learned growing up!
I am from Vietnam. I have listened this speech many many and many times. It is really encouraged me a lot. Thank for giving me motivation to be more confident when speaking a language is not my mother language.
I'm Brazilian and I live in the United States, after this video, I will never be afraid to speak english, she's right what is most important is to be understood, the result of what you want to achieve. Thank you for this great video!

My friend is Brazilian too and we communicate in English our levels are not that good but we still understand each other (the language is a tool for communication )
I'm from Indonesia. I learn english since i was in elementary school. I can remember a lot of words, but can't speak well. The teaching method in my school or course don't teach us how to confident to speak and write in english, they teach us how to remember a hundred words in a week and what's the grammars. Till i'm in the last year of high school, i found a course that really teach me how to speak confidently I also learn how to write and speak in english by give comment and watch/ listen something from internet 😂 Sadly, my friends affraid to try. I always ask my friend to practice speak english with me when they told me they wanna improve their english but, we never do it because they too afraid that me or somebody else will judge them. I think this situation not only happen in my circle, I hope people can't stop to feel judged or judging someone who try to learn other leangue. My grandma ever said, you only practice how to speak, it can't kill you, why you being afraid 😂
Ielts is use for a original english speaker like Britain, the lady in this video want everyone know how important to use English in proper way and flexible way. Not just using english like the way you study at school. It’s important “how much you know English”, it’s more important “how much you know others English “.
"Language is not an art to be master,it's a tool to use to get result, that tool belongs to you."..we studied in linguistic that language is a means or tool of communication we express our emotions, feelings, and thoughts through it.
10:07 "This language belongs to you. It's not an art to master, it's just a tool for you to get the result." Amazinggg!! This idea actually changes my mindset in my journey to learn languages.
She’s describing Jackson from GOT7...people say it doesn’t matter that he makes mistakes when he’s speaking Korean because his attitude is just “whatever” and he’s not afraid of speaking. He also has no problem getting his point across. I admire that so much and its a goal for me😂
Omg ahgase💚🥺 same here with me!! I wanna follow his steps, don't be afraid of making mistakes and try not to take it too seriously when it happens, makes the experience more enjoyable 💚
Yesss He keeps saying I'm not fluent at any of the languages i know, i just know as much as i need to make people understand what I'm talking about And that's what it's all about
Don't focus on yourself, focus on the person you're having a conversation with. It's not about you, it's about them and the message you want to come across.
I love this talk. I agree, learning English should be fun. It’s okay if it’s not perfect. I love English and I learn it not for the perfection, but for the human interaction.
Amazing stage presence and oratory skills…truly shows that she practices what she preaches. She is not afraid to make mistakes when communicating with others (in fact, I didn’t notice a single stutter or mistake in her speaking!), and in turn, her public speaking is immaculate. Amazing presentation❤
One more tip I would like to give off. Don't try to sound like a native speaker if you know that you cannot because if you try so hard, maybe you'll end up making no sense at all. I am not a native speaker and I notice this a lot from me myself. Whenever I communicate with my friends who are natives or whenever I struggle to write an essay or a report, I always want to sound as native as possible. I may want to use a lot of slangs, expressions, idioms, everything that could make me sound like a native speaker. However, after I've finished my talking/text and I reflect/look back at it, I realize that I don't even understand the information that I have given off and I end up re-explaining the idea in simpler language. "Cố quá thành quá cố", an expression in Vietnamese, my mother tongue :), that explains these situations. However, this doesn't mean that you could slack off and not try to improve your English, especially if you're surrounded by an English-native-speaking community like the one I'm in now (and I'm still struggling with my daily conversation in English). So, try your best, try your hardest, but not to hard or you'll end up making no sense.
As an English professor teaching ESL at the high school level for the first time, well, you just blew my mind with this. You NAILED it!!! I cannot WAIT to share this with my students, and to figure out ways that we, together, can speak English/Spanish like we are playing a video game...Fearlessly and focused on the recipient, not ourselves. My students are practicing English and I'm practicing Spanish and this video, your ideas, are a game-changer. THANK YOU Marianna Pascal!!
You might find very useful Italiano Automatico, by Alberto Arrighini. He also mentions quite frequently Stephen Krashen's theories about learning languages naturally, not by getting bored to death with grammar.
The higher your level in any language the higher your concern and need to speak it flawless. When you know your level is low you know the other person is not expecting much from you...
I speak 5 native Indian languages. Whilst in the learning process, a lot of people laughed, mocked, even ridiculed me for not using the grammar, the tune, expressions, so on and so forth. But in time within a few years, i was able to interpret, translate and even make business deals with people. And when these once critics saw me doing all well, they're speechless and hiding in pure jealousy. What I'm trying to say is that learning a language is all about mistakes and confidence. And yes, Ma'am just pointed out the importance of focusing on that person whom we're talking to. That added, you'll fare in learning a new language. People will judge you and that's okay. All the best. Thank you for your time reading this.
Yup but try to connect phrases more Like hi I'm from mother Russia ,her speech was so amazing, so inspirating I enjoyed it, keep going Putin with u, Russians are with u 😂😂
I learn Russian. That is a hard one to learn! But the principles still apply. I visited Moscow speaking maybe 10 phrases and had lots of fun communicating in Russian. It also gets easier the more languages you speak
That's a fact. When I talk to someone without doing something else at the same time, i get nervous, I'm afraid of making mistakes. But whenever i talk to someone while i play, i don't care about my mistakes, i don't care, i just talk and i can see I'm much better at talking when I'm playing than normally.
I have seen this presentation at least 50 times and still find it so valuable and downright fascinating. There is so much truth in it. Marianna is a brave and smart person! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and ideas with us!
What an encouraging speech. I've been learning Mandarin from about 5 months and was inhibited to speak it with native speakers. Immediately after listening to this talk, I called up two native speakers from China via WeChat and I spoke with them the first time in Mandarin. I did a pretty good job. :)
I’m in the same position with Japanese. I just arranged my first language exchange for next week because I know the language won’t stick in my head unless I practice!
Excellent speech. A big clap to her. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 She talks about what happens in a real world. She is a natural speaker. I could understand her perfectly.
That is so true Marianna Pascal, thank you for your beautiful speech. 6 years ago, I was struggling to learn English, and unfortunately, I didn't have money to study it before. After college, I started studying English, but the pandemic came and I had to change some techniques to keep learning it. So, basically, I put everything in my life into English, it wasn't a problem for not understanding 100%, I was virtually doing my exchange program, focusing only to increase my vocabulary and being in touch with someone in English. The results still coming and I still practice English every day by listening to USA radio, podcasts, music, playing guitar and following the lyrics, and so much more things that I love using English as a tool. I know that I have so much to learn but this is something amazing to keep in touch and learn from different cultures.
*I do speak 5 languages.* And I couldn't help myself from relating to this video on everything she said... While learning all of the languages that I do speak today, I had the same fear she's talking about every single time, but eventually I overcame it. What I did in order to do so was to find my self a friend that was native on that certain language that I was aiming to learn (I found myself using this tactic more than ever especially with English) and just talk to them about anything that came to my mind at the time. In the beginning like any other beginning it was always difficult, but I knew that they wouldn't judge me for trying, so I kept going, until eventually I gained the sufficient confidence and courage to the point that I didn't even cared anymore if I committed any mistakes or not. And from that point on, there is only one way to go, and that's improvement! Turns out I already had the vocabulary and the knowledge but I was lacking the confidence. I made a major improvement in these last few months and the video on my channel is a prove of that, in case any of whom might read this comment want to check how bad my English used to be and compare it to this comment which took me like 3 minutes to write.
Thank you for letting me realize the important things :) I'm Japanese, and I'm abroad in Australia now to study English! I'm still learning English every day. Recently, I lost my confidence because I sometimes can't understand what the people are saying clearly. Also, I embarrassed when I couldn't say what I'm thing in proper English :( Then, I thought my English level is very very terrible. However, I realized that English is just a tool to communicate, when I watched the video. I realized how nice to communicate in English with foreigners who live in all over the world ! In the future, I have to totally focus on the person who I'm talking to. Just believe in myself:) Just speak!Have a go!
The improvement is inevitable as long as you keep trying Like the river that flows everyday after years it makes the rocks smooth and round The mistakes will slowly disappear All you have to do is keep using English everyday
Im korean, Im also language learner like you. I think I`ve got a problem sth like you these days. Sometimes It can discourage me but all we have to do is just keep trying everyday. We can do it! Please don`t give up !
Wow, I am a french english-learner and this goes right into my heart. I always focused on my grammar and syntaxe etc... And I've never thought this way... The language is not only an art to be mastered but a tool to play and have fun with. True inspiration !
Hello, how's your English now? I'm trying to learn french, I could teach you a bit of English or speak with you and then you can teach me french if it's OK.
I can TOTALLY feel this! So glad that this was not only me, and lots of ppl were struggling with similar feelings when speaking English. YES, we were taught to make less mistakes as possible, and it was not about 'communicating' even with simple words, but about creating 'perfectly structured' sentences when we didn't even have chances to actually speak with our mouths, or write with our hands. Schools just taught us to check the right boxes out of 5 choices, where one of them had teeny tiny grammar mistakes that even native speakers would sometimes make.. and head on to the next question.. This is ridiculous. INEFFECTIVE.
Focus on the person you're speaking to. Focus on clarity. Don't worry too much about the mistakes you've made or you'll make. Treat English like a tool. As long as you can use the tool right, don't worry about mastering it.
I can totally relate to what you say! You just blew my mind! ‘English is not an art to be mastered, it’s just a tool to get a result’, this is so powerful. I need the confidence like Faizal has, and I’ll try to do my best working on it. Thank you for sharing!
I will definitely share this video to my friends and younger ones who treat me as their older sister. The speaker literally describes me. The moment my brain shutdown I cannot think anymore. I get nervous and anxious as I think people judge me. My english in my mind is almost perfect but I can't even say it loud. I am not Malaysian but still part of SouthEast. Most, if not all teachers, taught us grammar first before speaking and listening. Thank you for this video.
I'm a TED university student in Turkey and I feel under pressure in school because of my teachers. They judge us a lot so I am afraid of to speak english but after this video, I'll try to speak more English. Thank you 💙
It's so like it in Brazil! When I saw this video I set a goal in my life: "Even though my English isn't that good, I hope one day I'll make some videos to help Brazilians with this amazing knowledge." After almost 3 years I came back to watch this video and to let you know that I've started my channel less than a week ago! We study English in Brazil for about 7 years before university, basically just the "verb to be" , and we enter in the University not knowing even that. Some people study in private schools up to ten years and still can't have a natural conversation in English. Only 3% of the entire population can speak English. I wanna make some "Faizals" here and hopefully one day this numbers are going to be different. Thank you so much for this exceptional inspiration Marianna Pascal :)
That's so strange I had no idea that Brazil or portuguese speakers struggle so much with learning English Putting emphasis on how both culture love football should already help a lot
The best video ever. I think it was to me. That's because I'm always worry about to speak perfectly, and I lost my time just thinking about what I'm going to answer. Sometimes I know the words but I can't use. Thank you a lot!
Whenever you speak English, don't focus on yourself. Focus on the other person and result that you want to achieve!! The best advice for English learner to obtain confidence! thanks a lot :D
i was learn english about 10 years but until right now. I don't know how to start speak english. I always dread to start and waiting to be a master. But, today I realize I was wrong. English is tool to communicate and focus on other people to get result. I think my english so bad, but in this time I don't want to apologize because I just want to talk with you. Thank you Marianna, this video is very good.
I have been an English teacher here in Brazil for over 20 years, and I have always been very hard on myself. I taught for many years without being fluent. Seeking fluency was one of the biggest demands in my life. Nowadays, I still put a lot of pressure on myself and feel that I am not 100% there yet, even though I understand English well. Sometimes, I berate myself for not remembering many words. This can sometimes trip me up, but I have been trying to overcome it in my life. I hold myself to high standards! However, one of the things that I am most proud of is that wherever I go and even though I am still working on it, I receive nothing but praise.
As someone from the US, this is true! Every immigrant and international student I know who puts aside shame and speaks up manages to communicate effectively. Those who befriend natives wind up learning "correct" speech naturally anyhow. This TED talk also applies to my own studies in Spanish and French... I have force myself to speak when I have the chance or I'll lose both the chance and the ability!
In America you really have to keep yourself focused when learning a language; there isn't as much of a "need" to learn a different language because English is so widespread. You really have to force yourself out of your comfort zone and connect with why you love the language you're learning to stay committed and make progress.
This gave me lots of confidence. Language is not about perfection, it's about communication and there's no such a thing as right language or wrong, it's all about acceptable or unacceptable.
I am a language teacher and trainer and I recently did a masterclass related to international English. I was surprised at how positive the response was. How much of a 'lightbulb moment' it was for language learners. Your talk is along the same lines, so well done for getting it on to TED so that many other people can learn from it!
"English is not an art to be mastered, it's just a tool to use to get a result like a computer game." It impressed me a lot. To consider English just to be a tool, I think that I need to use English as a tool of the thing that makes me pleased, such as listening to music, watching videos, and studying science.
This video motivates me so much, i am always afraid of how people would judge when I do a mistake and this has given me lots of energy to speak English more confident
I've been watching English videos on RUclips about how to improve my English because I really thought I needed to be a master speaker, so with this video my thinking changed absolutely. Thanks so much
I'm Brazilian and here in Brazil we have much fear to comment mistakes in English learning. This video helps me to keep focused in my studies... Thanks a lot!
I've struggled with my confidence in Spanish, and after watching this video I realize what Marianna says is true, I speak better when focusing on a task or another person better rather than trying to be perfect. I'll try to use this advice more often, thanks!
I watched this after taking an online Spanish lesson where I felt all three of those symptoms of the brain shutting down. If there had been a panic button, I would have been ready to push it. I needed to hear all of this, even at 41 years old as a seasoned teacher. I teach English as a second language and I want my students to make mistakes so that they have the ability to answer and get practice in speaking. It's hard to be as gracious with yourself.
I loved the way how she explains about how u can communicate in English language And the good point she say it ..its a tool . Wow this woman she amazing
I'm a medical student in Viet Nam. I've studied English since I was 9. But day in and day out, my English level isn't improves. It stuck at a very low level. I'm so shy, extreme fear, and sold on. When I take part in some social activities at my university, I realize that I would improve my English, and I believe I can do it. I try to a lot of methods to do that. And when I watch this video, I really understand what she said, It gives me a lot of movitations, a lot of confidence. I practice every day, listening, speaking, writing, all over the day, all the time. it become my hobbies, it become to a part of me life. I've never been better. Thank you very much
This is so inspiring, most of Taiwanese students do very good on English writing, listening and reading but they totally ignore the speaking. The main result is we are afraid of making mistakes, it's time to change.
I get the point and the analogy. The important thing in the end is to communicate something and not to feel ashamed because you can't conjugate a verb or don't know how to pronounce a word, that's what languages are for: to communicate. I'm sure if the curriculum would focus more on communication rather than grammar mistakes students would feel much more confident to speak and get their message across. It is our duty as teachers to change that and help students to have enough confidence to speak using all the words they know, even if their vocabulary is very limited. We need to make them feel as comfortable with speaking a language as they feel when they are playing videogames.
still learning grammar is very important to students, at least for the writing tests. Also grammar is the beauty of any language, you would love that beauty if you really love a language. Of course when it comes to talking/verbal conversation, you can ignore (but not recommended) some advanced grammars to speed up the communication (in fact all languages are not exceptions, even for native speakers). The purpose of writing is for "archived", "maintained", "official" , "clear and unambiguous". While the purpose of speaking is for "quick communication", "focused on the content", "understandable" - and really all technical knowledge should be documented first before it can be discussed via talking.
ALM ... I agree. I am constantly rubbing EFL teachers up the wrong way because I don't insist grammarizing my students to death. My theory is that some teachers do grammar because they don't know how to teach languages. Languages can't be taught anyway. With the right encouragement they can be learnt very quickly.
Miss, this is a blessing to me. Yesterday, I prayed that I could convey my thoughts effectively again both in my native language, Filipino and in English, I grew up using both. I came from being this timid teenage girl, to having great relationships with people I met in college, to experiencing that brain shut down that you mentioned caused by overthinking the "best" words or stories to use, to yesterday when I finally sought God's help and wrote down that I need to improve my communication skills again instead of just being a cool conversationalist I used to want to be. I wrote it down and I intended to watch a youtube video abt it specifically, but instead I watched this first thinking it could help my language learning since I'm currently studying French. And this is an answer to my prayer that I could relearn exactly what I did right when I was 16-17 y.o.. I appreciate the way you tell stories, your talk in general, and the person that I see you as. This is a blessing. And I praise Jesus for using this video and for using your life to positively impact others'. I also think you're a perfect teacher/instrument for me not just to learn but to be blessed today. P.S. Anyone from the Philippines will agree with me on the fact that a lot of Filipinos will benefit from this. This is very useful and timely for us bec. it's true we can speak "better" English than some of our Asian neighbors but unfortunately, we became critical of others esp our fellow Filipinos when it's comes to speaking English which like what you pointed, shouldn't be a big deal. So thank you. May God bless you, your family, and all the viewers of this video----more! 😊💕

I'm afraid of making mistakes like grammar mistakes that might let people notice my actual english level is low..as she said,i always focus on myself for pretending like a English native speaker.. Excellent talk! It's really inspired me a lot! Much appreciated!

As a English language learners, this speech encourages us to speak in English with confidence emblem though we make mistakes. Thank you for your speech.
From this video I just came to know that English is just a tool to get a result which is just a language that we need to use it.
How interesting it is. i love it

She is really right. Many people focus on their pronunciation and grammar. They don't focus on the listeners.
Languages are to communicate not need to be flawless.
if only someone had told me that when I was in college studying Italian. I overthought everything and was too much in my head
But if your pronunciation is wrong , how can you make sense to the listener ? I agree that the accents and grammar is not a big deal in English or any other languages but the correct pronunciation does matter. ( Just my personal opinion )
You're godamm right!
@@oliviawilson485 yes, you are right. Your pronunciation should be correct but you don't need to be have a perfect accent. Because language are just for communicate with each other. If you have a your country's accent but your accent can communicate with people, it's ok. Right?

After realizing all of this, I have decided to start learning Italian and I am going to replicate this whole process again so wish me luck xD
PS: I have started providing English content writing services and it's been awesome since then. My clients are usually from English speaking countries and they are happy with what I provide. I never thought I would get so far in English so if you feel stuck, always remember you can do it
Wish you get it

I studied Spanish my whole education (11 years, 1 year I was required to learn French). It wasn’t until after graduating with my bachelor’s degree when I started speaking with patients who spoke Spanish when I actually got to exercise speaking it with people.
You certainly write the language really well. No-one would know from your writing that you're not a native speaker.
That's right! I am strong agree with you! So it's waste time when try to speak like native English!

*I do speak 5 languages.*
And I couldn't help myself from relating to this video on everything she said...
Love this comment! Thank you!
Thank you for letting me realize the important things :)
I'm Japanese, and I'm abroad in Australia now to study English!
The improvement is inevitable as long as you keep trying
Like the river that flows everyday after years it makes the rocks smooth and round
The mistakes will slowly disappear
All you have to do is keep using English everyday
I was just started to learn 日本語 to study abroad in 日本!
great wrok!
Im korean, Im also language learner like you.
I think I`ve got a problem sth like you these days.
Sometimes It can discourage me but all we have to do is just keep trying everyday.
We can do it!
Please don`t give up !
@@tpsam Your saying gives me a lot of energy thank you!
I will keep that in mind!
@@nadiah868 hello , i'm a french speaker and would like to learn english , if you're interested ..
Until recent time I just know that English is language to communicate, but this made me realise how exactly it is a tool. Thank you.
I got the point, When u speaking English "don't focus on yourself but focus on listener"
*Noted*

Exactly
I can totally relate to what you say! You just blew my mind! ‘English is not an art to be mastered, it’s just a tool to get a result’, this is so powerful. I need the confidence like Faizal has, and I’ll try to do my best working on it. Thank you for sharing!
This speech is going to change the way I teach my students. Thank you so much!
Marta Czajka NJ..
definitely incorporating this into my language learning. speak with no fear, make mistakes, learn from them, read to increase your vocabulary.
"English is not an art to be mastered; it's just a tool to use to get a result."
schools: I will ignore that
🤣
😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you 💙
Rose I'm prashant from India I'm English lecturer, don't afraid English, its speak like our mothertoung,my what's up 7020098877 ,I will help u fraind
Hello. I'm from India.. I want become fluent in english.. I can't speak good English.. How can i improve
I am an English teacher and i hate that kind of teacher.
Go ahead no matter what. Nobody is perfect and you'll learn English making mistakes.

I didn't know TED had a university
Hopefully we will be waiting. Good luck!
That's so strange
I had no idea that Brazil or portuguese speakers struggle so much with learning English
Putting emphasis on how both culture love football should already help a lot
The best video ever. I think it was to me. That's because I'm always worry about to speak perfectly, and I lost my time just thinking about what I'm going to answer. Sometimes I know the words but I can't use. Thank you a lot!
Whenever you speak English, don't focus on yourself. Focus on the other person and result that you want to achieve!! The best advice for English learner to obtain confidence! thanks a lot :D
I completely agree with this!!
i was learn english about 10 years but until right now.
What an amazing speech. I was so confused my whole life about why I can’t speak. Now I see.

Please, start online classes on RUclips 🙏🙏
Hi. Would you like to teach English online to those who are not privileged
What a great speech. Treating language as a tool and not something to master. Focusing on using it, not not trying to mess up. Brilliant! 🔥
Thanks so much
I'm very high level in English and I'm always confident speaking to native English speakers. Actually, I LOVE it.
Hi Jessica,I'm Omurgul, help me please to learn English,if you have free time

I'm Brazilian and here in Brazil we have much fear to comment mistakes in English learning. This video helps me to keep focused in my studies... Thanks a lot!
I´m Brazilian too, and I´m training my listening here! "kkkkk" Don´t go fear on our way!
Me too, i'm afraid, but it's fine.
Focused on* ;)
I've struggled with my confidence in Spanish, and after watching this video I realize what Marianna says is true, I speak better when focusing on a task or another person better rather than trying to be perfect. I'll try to use this advice more often, thanks!
كم هو منطقي تفسيرك لطريقة تعلّم اللٌغة الإنجليزيّة.. !! تتحدّثين بوعي كبير.. شكرا على معلوماتك... 🌷
No one will judge your English is good or not when you speaking. English is just a tool for communication. Don't be afraid to express.
Hi,my names aydin , I am from Iran, I am also learning the language, can I communicate with you? Please enter your email
I loved the way how she explains about how u can communicate in English language
And the good point she say it ..its a tool .
Thank you very much
Nice bro, keep going!
Good luck
Mistakes make perfect! :) You should keep trying.
you have been doing a great job
A while ago I was looking for how to speak well, I searched books and everywhere and here I am finally finding the answer,Thank you
This is so inspiring, most of Taiwanese students do very good on English writing, listening and reading but they totally ignore the speaking.

I agree with you and i from Indonesia
Don't focus on yourself ,focus on your results that's you want to achieve.
What a beautiful line that's brought me near to my dream.
Some thoughts are always help to keep us on track to our dream.
Omg! She's read my mind! I've always been afraid to have a conversation in English with others.. I'm afraid of making mistakes like grammar mistakes that might let people notice my actual english level is low..as she said,i always focus on myself for pretending like a English native speaker.. Excellent talk! It's really inspired me a lot! Much appreciated!
her voice is very attractive and makes me feel more confident. I impressed the most sentence: "language is not an art to be mastered. it's just a tool to use to get a result".
As a English language learners, this speech encourages us to speak in English with confidence emblem though we make mistakes.
Thank you for your speech.
From this video I just came to know that English is just a tool to get a result which is just a language that we need to use it. This is crucial to all to communicate in English which helps us to develop our standards in society & to achieve success in every levels of our life. Thanks for this video✨👍
