She has like a size 2 waist too, freakin a. No wonder so many of these gymnasts suffered with extreme body image issues after they finished their careers
@@myerklamb8529 this, especially before the 2000s, commentators would comment on gymnasts weights all they time, they would also tell the audience the gymnasts weights too. It’s disgusting.
@@myerklamb8529 Honestly, she probably has a 00 size waist really. It would be one thing if for example, someone had been out rehabbing a serious injury for a year and fallen out of shape noticeably, not only by gaining fat, but also by losing muscle and was clearly struggling to do their skills, but the awful comments that used to be freely said and accepted about clearly very physically fit girl's bodies that were in wonderful condition, but maybe not exactly the build and body type of the traditionally ideal gymnast are ridiculous. They used to like to make these comments anytime anyone was not emaciated looked, even when they were incredibly toned and had no identifiable fat anywhere on their bodies.

Yes weight gain, or height gain, or any body change can effect a gymnast's abilities and performance and if she had made a comment about a gymnast's weight in that context than that would be okay, but just making a ridiculous comment (because calling this young woman 'chunky' is ridiculous) to basically put her down is not, and should not be tolerated or not criticized. @@rachelmarie2228 Rachel, I don't approve or agree with cancel culture. I also hate it. I was merely stating the fact that if she'd made those statements whether her right or not, she would have been forced out. I agree she shouldn't have used the terms she did.
Ugh. We can always rely on Monica Phelps to ladle out some hurtful commentary based on body shaming or silly nit-picking rather than doing what every critic is taught: praise first, then what to improve. I also heard a male commentator-- working with Phelps, in fact--praise a gymnast along these lines: "She looks better than ever after that vacation...she's more relaxed, she got a haircut...I think she even got a tan!" I wanted to throw hands!
I agree with you it should be a video on Al, Elfie and the one and only Tim! But how DARE that women say that girl was chunky... She has a f*king perfect body! I'd love to see the commentator put on a tight ass Leo, stand on a 10cm wide piece of wood and then do a backhandspring into a back full. Doubt she could/would etc. What a horrible person
She didn't mean it in a negative way. She said it was good that gymnastics isn't only for prepubescent, slender girls. She was actually skinny shaming. lol
But calling that body type chunky is a bit off. There are so many bulk gymnasts, no shading anybody tho, I like muscular look (like Simone or Shawn). But all gymnasts are so short even being bulk makes them small. 😆 The gymnast in the video was still pretty skinny for a gymnast.
My new favorite quote and not just for gymnastics but life as we know it today with Cell phones EVERYWHERE. "We are not looking at it with the speed of the human eye"😂😭 Give me a minute to put on my cyclops eye and I'll give it another look. 😂
While some of these comments were really rude, many of them were not. Many of these clips were from a time when the public needed to be educated about the sport itself, and some of the commentators were focused on that. Like it or not, it's a commentator's job to report on the good, the bad and the ugly. While I don't care for comments on the gymnasts' looks, to say they are a better tumbler than dancer isn't necessarily a criticism. No one needs to comment on weight, though height changes or growth spurts are fair enough to mention. It is NOT being harsh to say, "This performance was actually better than yesterday's."
I think she was talking about her muscles. Having bulky muscles was pretty rare back then and she even complimented at least diversity in body type later on.
@@DeepSeas.. doesn't make it okay though. having muscle does not make you fat in any sort of way which she needs to learn. having muscle and being "chunky" are two different things.

But if they’re men, they can do almost no wrong. “The judges like to see you fight for your landings” was my favorite. As opposed to the girls whose whole routine was a waste if they took a step on their dismount.
The only comment I think was a bit rude was the “chunky” comment. That was uncalled for. And the “watching too many movies” was a bit unnecessary too, although funny. But to be honest, everything else said here seemed perfectly legit to me. I think for the most part people are just being too sensitive. It is the commentators job to point out the errors in the routine. And promoting different body types is actually a good thing.
