I do think anyone running for a position of government should pass a basic iq test before they are allowed to throw their hat in the ring. Seriously, if you're a senator, you should know the constitution, know the laws of your state, and most importantly, know how the median household income, cost of living, and how many live in poverty. If you cannot give a somewhat accurate answer on that, then you should not be allowed to run for your states government position. If you're wanting to run for president, then you need an even harder iq test that also includes interactions with foreign powers as well as tests to see how stable you are before we even contemplate giving you a position of great power. You wanna know why I say this? History has shown that those who gain power and fear knowledge outright ban knowledge. Stalin executed every doctor and scientist if they didn't agree with his ideals and policies, to where near the end of his life, the only ones left were untrained or so old they hadn't practiced in over 10-30 years.
Maybe just require them to take the same citizenship test new citizens have to pass, or an equivalent exam. That would probably weed out most candidates!

There's a difference between being dumb and simply not knowing (never being taught). Because of this, I don't think we were necessarily dumber, we just didn't know then what we know now.
Stupidity vs ignorance.
The *_primary_* tool of both politics and religion is ignorance. Without ignorance, neither deceit nor fear have any effect.

Willful ignorance is easy. Analysis and comprehension require sincere effort.
