    The charge-dart rifle is very useful. It is best used on the most dangerous enemies as when they are stunned you can easily dispatch them with a headshot. The tranq gun is the same but not as effective. It is good on leapers and the raptor guys that hop around.
    I was surprised by how cheaply the Hive of the Mantids opens with you getting blasted by turrets and you're already in this metal alien ship/colony area. I think Hive of the Mantids should have opened more like Lair of the Blind Ones: a short wilderness area maybe stripped bare and then you approach the entrance to the hive.
    Primagen's Lightship is definitely an improvement over the previous two levels. It is more straight forward and though large, it is all organized around a central hub which makes backtracking way easier.

    • @aquawalrus
      @aquawalrus  6 месяцев назад +1

      I did make some limited use of the tranq gun, usually when ammo was low I would use it then melee the enemies down, but it was definitely low on my rotation. The charge dart I just couldn't get a good feel for.
      For sure the hive of the mantids did a lot wrong, but definitely that opening was the worst. I feel like it's almost a guaranteed life loss if you aren't ready for it on higher skills. I would have loved to see an intro section where you approach the ship, would have been a good callback to Turok 1 as well.

    • @Raycloud
      @Raycloud 6 месяцев назад

      @@aquawalrus I wonder if it was just a limitation of cartridge space. It also noteworthy to me how the Primagen is just the boss fight and no level to reach him, as opposed to Turok 1. Turok 2 is a big elaborate game but probably too big for the N64. It would be interesting to see someone make a mod that expands the entrance to both levels some.
      Anyway, have you tried either game with mods? I really like the Turok Plus mod for both games. The second has one bug for me that requires no clip to hop over a gate/bridge that fails to trigger, but otherwise it's a great and challenging experience. The Turok 1 version adds some quality of life stuff (like switching ammo types on command) and tweaks some of the weapons. You should try them if you haven't already.

    • @aquawalrus
      @aquawalrus  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@Raycloud I 100 percent think they had some heavy limitations on the cartridge size. I'm sometimes shocked at how much they are able to fit into some of these games.
      I haven't played any mods for it, but I'm for sure gonna look into that. I never thought of modding Turok, but that would be absolutely awesome.

    • @Raycloud
      @Raycloud 6 месяцев назад

      @@aquawalrus Oh they make a huge difference. Turok Plus mod for either game. I did have one consistent glitch in
      Turok 2 where I needed no-clip, but it's worth it if you don't care about achievements. I'm not sure what they did to the ballistics but the shooting is smoother. More enemies, but all weapons have secondary functions (in T2). Triple Arrow shot for the regular bow, blast with both barrels with the shotgun, ect, everything is more lethal. In Turok 1, you can even swap some weapons for versions or other weapons from Turok 2, 3, and Rage Wars, or get upgrades like a burst fire for the pistol. Alien weapon has a secondary fire as a flamethrower.
      If you do decide to try them out I'm curious to see what you think. (no I didn't make them, just a fan)

      @aquawalrus  6 месяцев назад +1

      That all sounds awesome. I do love my achievements, but at this point I'm near 100 percent with them so I wouldn't be missing out on much.
      Might be a bit before my next playthrough, but I'll let you know when I do get through them, spicing up Turok one with some other weapons especially seems like it would be a good time!

    Can you believe I never finished this game? I liked it a lot, and I bought it with my Voodoo 2 card, and the game looked amazing. The weapons were fun to use and the music... OH, the music!
    But I remember getting lost in the Swamp stage (or something. The one with the poison water) for a while (and that "while" is 4 months) and ended up frustrated. I didn't have Internet back then, so using a walkthrough was out of the question...
    I feel like I should give it a new chance nowdays.

      Definetly worth going back to check out with the Nightdive remaster, they even added some quality of life stuff like objective markers.
      The game is definitely mazey, but not too bad. My main complaint is just how front loaded the game is. First level is easily the best one, though the rest aren't bad!

    Love this game, replayong on Switch since the late 90s, actually en route to completing it (never got all powers and primagen keys when i was a kid) . I LOVE your "walk the reader through" style of video creation, it is easy in this hyperactive day and age for me to follow, where you clearly explain what is going on and the backstory for each segment. I hadnt seen a documentary style like this in a while and its so refreshing to see. Keeping an eye out for you, wishing all the best.

    I love the "criticisms" from both of those reviews. I absolutely love the fact that this game doesn't hold your hand so when you find something, complete an objective or obtain a new power it actually feels like an accomplishment. The exploration wasnt difficult or game breaking in the slightest. It was actually the best thing about it. One of the reasons I hate Turok 3 was because they listened to those crying about the massive levels and made the sequel absurdly linear. Also my thirteen year old ass could line up headshots with my eyes closed...with an N64 controller no less...all while jumping and running around because standing still was a death sentence in this game. I think there are certainly legit critiques to be had about this game but those two in particular just sound butthurt because they weren't smart enough to figure it out or not good at it.
    Great video though...I believe the soudtrack deserves an honorable mention because it was beautiful and otherworldly. And I agree...this was Turok at its peak....shame we will most likely never see anything remotely like this again from this franchise.

    • @aquawalrus
      @aquawalrus  4 месяца назад

      Totally on point, like I remember playing the third one when I was a kid, and I know I beat it, but if you asked me to recount it I don't have nearly the memories I do from this game. It was such a unique experience, and the exploration just meant you got to see every corner of the beautiful levels they built. The combat being so fast paced, adding in that exploration element meant you were forced to slow down a touch and enjoy the scenery rather than just blow by it all.
      The music for sure is a standout. Every time I boot it up I spend a few minutes letting that menu music play, it's just a vibe.

I'm playing it the remaster on Switch and it's soo good, no more 20fps and no more wondering around for hours, the hint system helps a lot. I never used the Charge Dart weapon as a kid because it dealt no damage, and i was like what's the point? However, if you play the game on hardcore mode and you're low on health, it can be very useful. You don't even have to charge it, just enter a room, stun a tough enemy or two and then switch to the Grenade Launcher to finish them off. I think its kinda underrated. The Shockwave in T1 is the most garbage weapon in my opinion. It needs to be charged all the way to be effective. Turok 3 also has a similar weapon to the charge dart but they call it Shredder for a reason, most OP weapon by far, you should review T3 as well

    • @aquawalrus
      @aquawalrus  5 месяцев назад

      That is the one achievement I'm lacking for T2 is hardcore mode, maybe a playthrough of that will make me appreciate the underated weapons.
