y'know, watching the fight, it doesn't seem like it's all that hard. but fighting him, holy shit. he hits like a mack truck, his moveset's diverse enough that it's nigh-impossible to tell if he's gonna follow up a slash or not, and he leaves such little time to heal that you're pretty lucky if you can get in an estus between combos. and that's all before he goes into his second phase, where he gains an aura of fire around his sword, permanently fucking up my roll times.
guess that's why it feels so good to finally put the bastard in the dirt (ashes).

For anyone still having trouble try: first, lowering your equip load as much as you can, the lower your load the longer your rolls are. Second, put as much pressure as you can on him on his first phase, you can somewhat delay the second phase transition. Also, you can safely hit him 3 or 4 times at the start of the battle, during his entrance animation, and 2 or 3 safe hits during his phase transition animation. Hope this helps, be patient and learn his attacks to time your dodges to the best of your abilities. Also, make sure you have at least 100 AGI.

As a shield ust use any greatshield with 100% phis block for phase one. In phase to switch to the rebels greatshield to mitigate some of the fire damage (also use a ring the lowers fire damage) i also used to heide knight set at +5 (except the helmet). With the sword you can do one handed damage between 400 and 600 and two handed is between 500 and 650.

Red iron twin blades at 40 Str, remember not to panic roll his FUGs and you can reaction dodge his small sword, rolling to his right. Second phase, get close to him when he does the blast attack and I frame it, roll back when you see the AoE start, if it hits you you generally have enough time to heal after, everything else can be dodged without too much trouble as long as you're not just spamming roll as he does delay his attacks often

2:00 and 2:18 are what makes this boss difficult. He would normally do a combo then nothing. You think it's safe to hit hum after the combo but, no, he punishes you for trying. He won't do this punish unless you hit him or estus.
Wear a piece of Vendrick's armor to bait him to two hand his greatsword and roll into his slow fire sword sweep. This is the safest moment to attack or heal.

When I finally killed him after a (near) perfect run of flawless dodging, it was such a satisfying feeling. That second phase leaves almost no margin of error, especially at half of your max health.

I have a confession: So my friend gave me DS2 on Ps3 about 5 years ago, got me into the game, changed my life. Well, he had the DLC version. So I had beaten the game for maybe the 2nd or 3rd time, cause you know, you never truly get good until you've beaten it a few times, and he offers me his disk to play the DLC on. I accepted gracefully, but he warned me that the DLC was tougher than the main game, which is the easiest of the Souls anyways, and he told me his heroic story if grinding this legendary boss at Brume Tower, the Fume Knight, for several hours, and that I was in for some grief. Now, my first time through the game was rough. I beat the Last Giant no problem, pulled the fall trick on the dragon rider, but boy, The Lost Sinner KICKED my ass, OVER and OVER, to the point where after I realized I couldn't do anything else until I beat her, I had to change my entire archetype from strength to duel weilding with staff so I could do distance damage and basically cower the whole fight. But for my magic to work, I needed to light the room, which required the bastille key obtained AFTER you beat the fucking annoying gargoyles. Magic helped, but that was another 2-3 hours I'll never get back. Anyways, so after several hours of grinding to weild magic and getting the key, I finally beat that ugly bitch. Actually, I just remembered, it wasn't her, it was the fucking ruin sentinels. Yeah, they gave me HOURS of pain, and then I had to face her. Fucking cunts. Anyways, I was now overleveled, pretty heavily, so the rest of the game wasn't as hard for me as it should've been. The skill increase and levels from her made even the smelter demon, in my opinion the hardest boss in the base game, not as hard. I mean I WAS better, but still. Point being, I wasn't as good as I thought I was after beating the game, even though I took down some tough opponents like the ones I mentioned. So I thought I was the shit and played a new run and beat it with less problems than my first run, naturally. Unfortunately, I cheated. I exploited the bonfire ascetic loop with the giant memory battle, so I got SOOOO OP. So when I faced the fume knight, I was easily 20-30 levels over what I should've been. So it was a tough fight, and at that point I had just finished my 4th run, but it "only" took me like 10-15 tries to beat him, and I was happy, but knew I kinda cheated. Hell, I beat Dark Lurker on my first or second try. So yeah, that's the story with needless buildup of how I cheesed the Fume Knight. I'll have to go back and do it properly. After a while I was so good I could've definitely done it. I could beat the game in like 4 or 5 hours. I was actually bitchin, cause I'd just play the game over and over. Lost Sinner never gave me trouble after that. Praise the sun!

You can also use gyrm great shield for both physical and fire 100% defense. But not for prime strategy but rather as an insurance during strifing if by any chance an attack hits you when you weren't expecting it.

It's an almost perfect mix of difficult and fun, he offered a good amount of challenge (took me around 6 tries or so), and learning his moveset was a blast. Hey, I've also just realized the Fume Knight is left handed (since the fume ultra greatsword is his main weapon)...I dunno why, but as a leftie, that's kinda cool to me.

@@Bob-tq9ny yup! It took me forever to beat him (it doesn't help that when I got the DLCs I was on NG+), shield was hindering my stamina so I decided to learn how to dodge and man, I'm glad I did that, dodging/parrying is so much cooler :D

My strategy was roll, roll shoot a bolt. I'm way to scared to use the sword when that massive fucking dark flame sword is after me.
Took 13 minutes of concentration and was a huge adrenaline rush. One of the best bosses in the game for sure

things I learned from this video:
    -I'm not doing anything wrong
    -My damage output is fine
    -My rolls are better timed
-I just havet gotten lucky yet

I can't beat this guy, I can dodge his attacks pretty well, but every once in a while I take a ton of chip damage from blocking if I miss a dodge. Then when I go to heal up, no matter how big of a window he gives me, he always chases me down and kills me before my health goes back up all the way. So I pretty much have to have a flawless run if I even want to kill him at all.

1- Don't try blocking his attacks just don't, just dodge instead, I reccomend that you dodge towards the direction in wich the sword is coming from, so that you take a bigger advantage of your roll's i-frames.
2- Only heal after attacks with a really long recovery, like when he puts his sword in the ground, DO NOT try to heal when he is blocking or far away, he will fuck you up
3- Make sure you have a decent amount of agility, try leveling up your adaptability to 26, at least

Indiana Jones I just beat him in 4th try! Just fight naked and use weapon two hand, I used the red iron twinblade and destroyed him. When you are naked you recover stamina much faster, and roll much better, you will be able to dodge like in Bloodborne. Believe me, it's MUCH easier.

For phase 2 you can use the rebels greatshield to mitigate some of the fire damage, also use a ring that lower fire damage. For phase one i recommend any greatshield with 100% phis block and good stabillity

Just beat DS II for the first time. It is safe to say that this guy was the strongest in the game for me.
