Fun fact: pinwheel is actually a rotten-esque fusion of three people, a family that are all lumped together, working in the catacombs to figure out how to separate themselves and be a normal undead family again.
I did it on my first try, FAR before getting the fast travel... I felt as if the world spawned wheels in that area, and when I finally killed all of them, a black knight could barely be seen from bellow sneacked a attack on me... then I quit it :)
Duck Overlord Yes. I've beaten it. Running isn't required to play or even beat the game in any part. It's only really required to get the Crestfallen Merchant, but that isn't necessary to progress the game.
I almost can't believe that the Asylum Demon ever gave me trouble. He's really only hard that first time you play, when you're still terrified of the game
David Copeland First time I played, I beat him up easily. Though I am used to playing a few other games(like witcher) where you can spam diving rolls all over the place to avoid enemies. Not as nice as this video, but it gets the job done.
If I had started with DeS, I would have been prepared. But like, when i played for the first time, I hadn't even seen it being played before. I knew absolutely 0 about it. I wish I could get my Souls virginity back, and lose it again. It's never quite as fun as that first time
I skipped the cutscene and missed the door.. so i fought him with my bare hands the first time around. It made the rest of the game seem pointless up until O&S though. I even enjoyed kapra demon after that. Edit: yes, I am retarded and I know that.
That has been pointed quite a few times already. This video is nearly four years old now, so those particular comments are buried away somewhere. I think my initial response was along the lines of; it might not be as practical, but it looks much cooler. Really though, it's just a nifty little trick that can be used that I came across by chance. The way I see it, any new gameplay mechanic that hasn't already been discovered is good to know, practical or not.
ahhh dark souls. This game literally saved my life. I was super depressed in 2011 and if not for this game giving me escape I don't think I would have made it out.
Irrelevant Oaf it's like you die fourteen times to the spinning skeletons of doom and then you fight pin wheel and it like, Is this some kind of joke...
I followed norhteregg and got to pinwheel and got crepped out by the music that was playing. I vow to never go to the catacombs again unless its to progress through the game
Pro tip: if you dont got any divine weapons, when you kill a skeleton that is near a cliff knock one of their body parts off and then they can't come back.
+Phi6er yeah but skeletons resurrect themselves by putting themselves back together with the body parts that rolled away like a magnetic, pulling the parts together. Plus the parts only roll and do not fly, so because of that knock a part off a cliff and BOOM; the skeletons can't come back together. Or you know you can kill the necromancer or get a divine weapon.
I know this is 6 years old, but it's funny to think 10 minutes back then was pretty tough to do seeing as at most he had about a year of experience. I'd say this same run by someone that's played through this entire game multiple times over the last 9 years could be done in as little as 7, maybe less not sure.
not necessarily, but when I first watch this, I learned a fast way to get to a boss for easy souls, which is usually the first boss I fight after asylum. I usually go to Valley of Drakes to get the dragoncrest shield (+85 fire defense) and have that shield up while Paladin Leeroy does all the dirty work)
I watched this when I first started and it only took a couple tries and was very helpful ended up switching out the scythe quickly but it was still very helpful
Black Knight Halbred is far better than this but you need more souls since you need to be a higher level and 10k souls to +5 it, +10 twinklings, and don't forget its only 1/5 chance of dropping from the basin guy
Yeah simply knowing where to go amd how to play is the most op thing I can beat ds1 like it's nothing aswell as ds3 but ds2 I cant play for shit cause I've only played it for about half an hour and didnt like the feel of it
+miserablesmileface Someone beat the game with voice controls and another with a guitar hero guitar! (BTW with the voice controls is like saying `move 10 paces left and roll`. Imagine having to say every little thing in an intense boss fight)
Are you serious? Better strat is to savescum a black knight sword (or halberd if you're doing PVE only), get the grass crest shield and elite knights, and upgrade your weapon with the twinkling titanite you get from the crystal lizards you can find in the burg and in the grassroot basin. Add in a quick havel's and a FaP ring and you've got yourself sorted, much better than a wimpy little fire weapon.
Daiyuki117 Wouldn't even need ten to get the sword, all you have to do is get through the burg and donk the black knight with the help of the lightning pine resin and congratulations you've got a weapon that's better than a freaking +5 fire whatever. You could probably get the black knight sword, havels, 4 twinkling titanite, grass crest shield, elite knights, and FaP ring in ten minutes, and that gives you a much better weapon, plus armor which this strat doesn't provide. Might give it a shot to see how viable it is actually.
The scythe has a long range and can can dead angle well in PVP. It's also got a long recovery time if you miss, and +5 fire is nowhere near as good as a +1 or +2 black knight sword. Video says OP in ten minutes, I say that you can be even more OP in a shorter or equal amount of time.
Baxter There are several different methods to obtain overpowered equipment early in the game, and while a lot of them do offer stronger weapons than a Fire Great Scythe +0, there are a couple of reasons I still believe this is a method worth using. Firstly because the Great Scythe is a guaranteed weapon, the ascension material is also in place, as is the source of souls. The only real requirement in doing this, is don't die and lose those souls. Also, doing this isn't achieved by the same means as luring a Black Knight into some kind of cheap fall death, which let's face it, doesn't really help a player learn the mechanics of the game. As I mentioned, there are several methods in which an overpowered weapon (for so early in the game) can be obtained. The Gravelord Sword seems to be one that's mentioned quite often, so I'll use that as an example. I'm able to obtain that weapon and use it two-handed in just over 6 minutes and 5 seconds, and one-hand it in less than 8 minutes and 30 seconds from title screen. More powerful? Marginally (265 physical against 130/130 physical/fire). Harder to run and requires skill? Not really.
@@hurricaneheli79 i had fun fighting it tbh, i laughed at myself for not memorizing the spots where the stone falls. The jump was kind of annoying but you just need a little timing and attention the bosses arms and it will be over in a min
@@junojan8414 Nah man, you just need fat armor and you poise through his attacks and they do little dmg, like the Stone Knight Set, its legit op early game.
This video may be ancient, but with the Remaster coming out, one thing I'd add for beginners is that there's a Ring of Sacrifice on the aqueduct you walk through to get to Undead Burg. Getting that and resting at the bonfire before the Catacombs can take the stress out of the post-Pinwheel run, as if you die with it on you can just spend the souls at the bonfire without the risk of losing them.
If you think about it, pinwheel deserves more respect. Without him our Lord and savior, Giant Dad, would have never existed. Still weaker than a wet tissue though.
Brian Torres I wish for the remastered version, they made his hits stronger and his teleportation faster and his clones have more health. Then he’d actually be more than a nudge death.
@@Dravianpn02 I think Pinwheel was designed with the fact that you can go straight to the Catacombs from Firelink(if you're crazy/skilled enough) in mind. Weaker/worse players cant kill him as fast and thus have to actually dodge his attacks and target his clones carefully. But that makes him a weakling if you fight him when you're supposed to, like most people do.
lorewise hes also not meant to be strong hes Just a man who wants his wife and kid back but got merged with them and doesnt know what to do to have his old life back it suits him being a tissue
its not that hard so you can pull this off easily on your second charakter if you play the game for first time and you died 10 times trying this i would say you earn it cause first time shouldnt be like 'i go to the internet and look whats the easiest way to get trough the game' btw if you are bad at the game a better weapon wont help too much
Welp, to each their own I guess. It may be out of left field here, but I'd actually prefer someone get a little help on the game and proceed through with the entire game, then not get any help and eventually quit. Especially since Dark Souls is such a glorious masterpiece of an RPG. I've seen a few of my friends who would have fled from Dark Souls stay just because they got a little help in the start. I think that shows some maturity as a gamer, even if only a tiny bit.
Maria Ferguson Well it's an open route to go to so if you go there first and end up completing the area then pretty much deserve to be able to go through most of the game with ease lol
***** no reason to hate on the drake sword, you can use it to save titanite when you get the weapon you actually want to use, early game. Makes killing the Black Knights a lot easier when you only have to parry/backstab them two or three times and thus saves you time if you need the 16 str anyways.
AquiredCents I'm pretty sure they're calling you a casual gamer. Which means they play more often than you? Or their skillz are just so 1337 & they're MLG or equivalent. Something along the lines of elietest bullshit.
This is the exact video I used when I started my first playthrough, I was struggling with the game and looked up videos and this helped me a ton, getting this recommended now after all these years brings back good ( and bad ) memories... never go to the catacombs first...
Holy cow. I struggled through this game and missed half of that stuff until late game. I didn’t know there was a blacksmith in the catacombs and I had no clue you could get there so early. Wow.
Dark Blurr Fluffy's Gaming started the joke, but Disva Dravir wasn't repeating the joke, he was just adding a little bit more information to the conversation. He basically said "It isn't a coincidence that the paladin we find at the Catacombs is named Leroy, this is actually an homage Darksouls developers made about WoW. Leroy Jenkins was playing a paladin when he did that famous charge. "
At the moment where you first took the ShortCut and fell down you could have gone for the Gravelord Nito's Sword which is waaaaaaaaay more powerful at the beginning and you will one-hit those skeletons
If you're already in Catacombs, why not just go for Gravelord Sword? It comes with a absolutely free miracle, too, and if you start as a bandit you only need seven levels to use the sword and miracle. That being said, I realize that Great Scythe has way better scalings and such, but you could use this method to setup for a faith/str build. I'm mostly saying this since Pinwheel doesn't give as many souls any more, so my method seems quicker and cheaper for some actually higher damage.
i think if you are running a dex build you may as well grab the scythe but the gravelord sword is probably the better choice for quick runs/non planned builds. this method is really dumb now since pinwheel got nerfed. a better early overpower run would probably be starting wanderer or warrior investing early stats in 16 strength , then running down and grabbing the gls, leaving nito's tomb through the coffin and going straight to pinwheel and killing him for a mask, then i dunno go kill quelaag and ceaseless for some easy levels
started using the gravelord sword at the beginning of the game and finished the game with it :p i'm using a heavy set-up though... tower shield +15, gravelord sword +5, smough's armor and havels ring...
Penalty first ever play through black knight sword elite knight armor and grass crest shield with havel's ring and the red tear stone ring never let me down in pve though the black knight sword loses a lot of pvp matches
OMG I JUST DID IT, I died exactly 37 times and was mad(this game actually messes with me mentally) and sad so I said I'll try it this last time if I fail oh well I'll just you know go ring the bells but I did it I finally got the scythe without dying and finally upgraded it and all IM SO HAPPY
1.Start with cleric and master key. 2. At firelink take elevator down to new londo ruins 3. Open gate on the right with master key, grab astoras straight sword Boom. You’ll be able to easily get to sens fortress At sens fortress, kill mimic chest for lightning spear And youre good for the rest of the game. The Occult Club and Havels Set in Anor Londo will kill Gwyn for you, too so yeah this game isnt hard at at all
This video is such a classic, thanks algorithm for bringing me back. My personal favorite OP starting weapon is the black knight sword. I believe is 14/18 str/dex to two hand it which is doable by the first black knight.
Took me hours to do this and in the end I lost all the souls I tried so hard to get, drake sword is much easier to get and still does amazing damage for early game
Drake Sword is good, as long as you don’t make the mistake of spamming the special skill on every enemy like I did. It’s my first time playing the game and didn’t know that weapon skills use up a ton of durability
With the remastered version coming out I feel though I had to warn everyone not to rest at the bonfire by the armorsmith. If you happen to rest there, definitely do not go through the valley of the giants. Took me like 5 hours to get from the last bonfire in VOTG back to firelink with the gear I had.
You can also join the Gravelord Covenant and grab the Gravelord Sword. That thing melts everything more than halfway through the whole game. Just don't fight other players with it.
holy fucking dog shit... dude!!!! this is incredible!!! granted, it's going to take me a lot of memorization and trial and error, but you've essentially unlocked the game's "easy mode" with this run and build. incredible.
soul duping makes everything easy, lol. too bad they patched it out for the remaster.... it was always a useful tool to use to play around with builds.
The day I watched this was the day I started hating my life. I started drinking, doing drugs, having unprotected sex with a Lot of homeless women. This was my gateway drug. Sleep with this on your consciousness Aryiak.
That was great, except it's a poor use of the Great Scythe to make it a Fire weapon, unless you plan to convert it back to Normal at blacksmith Andre. The Great Scythe has scaling B, and upgraded to 14/15 has A, with dexterity. This fact, plus the weapon's reach and bleed effect, make it one of, if not the best dex weapons of the game; but elemental ascension (to fire, chaos, or lightning), loses the scaling. If you are going for a pure sorcery or miracle build, the Great Scythe will instead scale great with Intelligence or Faith when ascended to Magic/Enchanted or Divine/Occult, respectively. So, a Fire Great Scythe is only optimal for the entire game if you never level anything high (except maybe Vit and Endur). Good video for showing how to do all this, though.
+Sims Dreamer it's probably just mostly good in the beginning until you have the stats to carry it with scaling, which won't be till mid game when you can really use it to it's full potential.
I just started a new save and decided to give this a go since I've never used that weapon. This run definitely made for an interesting challenge. I think I died more getting the drops just right than I did my last 3 runs through the game, I kept screwing up, and then the skeletons that fell decided to kill me right after I hit the ground, lol. I ended up grabbing the Gravelord Sword as well though, since I was there. It was easy to tie in. Fun weapon.
Interesting to see what people thought was op way back in the day. I feel like the game used to be treated as insanely difficult. I mean anyone whos played the game should know you really dont need a fire infusion on the great scythe, just go get the large ember and upgrade like normal and you'll outscale well before you reach any difficult bosses. But hes so focused and acquiring as much early game strength as possible he minmaxes a fire infusion on the great scythe for slightly more early game damage.
For a lot of people, it was. Especially back in 2011 before a lot of balancing patches came into play. There’s no doubt that with a completed build, the standard upgrade path to +15 is best, but it isn’t the only way to play either. Elementals have their place in a number of scenarios. Scenarios such as SL1 playthroughs, VitGouge builds, restrictive level play, and a couple of others here and there. Elementals absolutely drop off in power scaling in the DLC, but they are still going to be your go to choice in SL1, low level and restricted level runs. Many would argue fire is useless against Quelaag, can’t disagree with that. Why would you need a fire weapon when a bow that hasn’t even been upgraded can handle her though? It’s possible to upgrade to the Chaos path after just one boss, without any kind of exploits, mods or otherwise, and comes with the added bonus of flexibility on stat investment when you’re not sure which direction you want to go with a build. That’s why this is less about acquiring as much early game strength as possible, and more about learning and understanding so you don’t need the most powerful weapons or the highest possible level you can reach to clear an area and a boss.
I'm 20+ hours in on my first go of DS1 and you just made me aware of the catacombs. How the hell did I miss that, I've farmed that area heaps earlier on haha
Another very powerful weapon you can get early is the Zweihander, which is in the graveyard too; once upgraded to +10, it makes the whole graveyard trip a pure cakewalk, one-shotting regular skelettons and two-shotting the bigger ones. It has a Strength requirement of 24 to be wielded in one hand, but you can two-hand it without penalty with just 16 of Strength.

Keep in mind that all of this works in the remastered, but don't use the bonfire at Vamos or you'll be stuck dealing with the wheel skeletons.

Pro tip: if you dont got any divine weapons, when you kill a skeleton that is near a cliff knock one of their body parts off and then they can't come back.
+Fadedgogeta godlike advice
+Phi6er or just kick the bugger off the cliff
+Phi6er yeah but skeletons resurrect themselves by putting themselves back together with the body parts that rolled away like a magnetic, pulling the parts together. Plus the parts only roll and do not fly, so because of that knock a part off a cliff and BOOM; the skeletons can't come back together. Or you know you can kill the necromancer or get a divine weapon.
+Phi6er it works if you knock the head off the edge
Was doing a cosplay run and didn't want to use a divine weapon
Phi6er you have to knock all of their body parts off
10 minutes where everything must be timed perfectly .. lol good video though
I know this is 6 years old, but it's funny to think 10 minutes back then was pretty tough to do seeing as at most he had about a year of experience. O it’s you
Naw fr... i b getting murked trying to follow these vids lol

Gordon Freeman shut your hole
The only overpowered thing here is the knowledge of the game itself. This build won't help a noob
not necessarily, but when I first watch this, I learned a fast way to get to a boss for easy souls, which is usually the first boss I fight after asylum. I usually go to Valley of Drakes to get the dragoncrest shield (+85 fire defense) and have that shield up while Paladin Leeroy does all the dirty work)
I watched this when I first started and it only took a couple tries and was very helpful ended up switching out the scythe quickly but it was still very helpful
especially once they realize later on that fire kinda sucks
Black Knight Halbred is far better than this but you need more souls since you need to be a higher level and 10k souls to +5 it, +10 twinklings, and don't forget its only 1/5 chance of dropping from the basin guy
Yeah simply knowing where to go amd how to play is the most op thing I can beat ds1 like it's nothing aswell as ds3 but ds2 I cant play for shit cause I've only played it for about half an hour and didnt like the feel of it
1. Buy yourself the club.

Clayton Smith Bro, your fists are a weapon *pulls arm out of the gaping hole in a black knight's back*

+miserablesmileface Someone beat the game with voice controls and another with a guitar hero guitar! (BTW with the voice controls is like saying `move 10 paces left and roll`. Imagine having to say every little thing in an intense boss fight)
Ten months of trying later*
Finally, I have done this perfect run in ten minutes
It's been ten months. Have you done it?
Took me about 5 hours to get it down today
The scythe is literally the best weapon in the game
Not really.
Baxter
The black knight weapons have low drop rate and they are not the best weapons in the game.

Brian Torres I don’t understand how a game works so I don’t even know if that’s a possibly thing to do, but still.

Warrior only needs 3 levels to twohanded it which is when the weapon is best

soul duping makes everything easy, lol. too bad they patched it out for the remaster.... it was always a useful tool to use to play around with builds.

thanks youtube algorithm. I almost forgot about this classic video.
Fun weapon.
To all the people arguing weapons in the comments; Choose your favorite moveset.
10 minutes later: I don't feel overpowered...
I always enjoy watching these videos of people flying through a game that took me months to complete on my first playthrough. Lol. Nice vid. Im gonna attempt this run after work.
