exactly, and we say " Wa Alaikom" because in the same hadith he talked about, Jews was saying to prophet Muhammad pbuh "AlSam Alaikom" which translated as " toxic / poison on you" so prophet Muhammad pbuh told us to say "Wa Alaikom" and not curse back.

There is a reason behind this, not because he is not a Muslim, but because the Jewish used to say Al-saam alaikum (death be upon you) instead of saying Assalamu Alaikum (peace be upon you)...So Muslims at the time of the Prophet PBUH were not able to differentiate between those who honored them with the true Islamic greeting and those with bad intentions, so they would respond to them by saying: Wa Alaikum (And upon you).

The Jews used to greet the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) by saying, “As-sam `Alaykum ya Muhammad (Death be upon you, O Muhammad),” praying that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would die. The fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said “wa `alaykum” indicates that if they were saying “As-salamu `alaykum (peace be upon you),” then peace will also be upon them, i.e., whatever they say to us, we say to them. Hence some of the scholars said that if a Jew, Christian or other non-Muslim clearly says “As-salamu `alaykum,” it is permissible for us to say “ `alaykum As-salam (upon you be peace).”

That could be out of context in this case, and he could be wrong in doing so but still he is following a tradition. The reason Muslims say “walaykom” instead of saying “walaykom al-salam” is because Jews used to tell Muslims “Al-sum alaykom” which literally means “poison” and make it sound like al-Salam. so by only saying “walaykom” you are only returning what they said, if it was peace so be it and if it was poison then that’s their choice. Second there was an incident about this matter when the prophet peace be upon him was alive, one day a group of Jews came to the prophet and they said to him ( Al Sam Alaikum ) and guess what :) it doesn't mean peace be upon you as the original greeting means

When he replies “wa alykum” which means “for you too”, in case if he said “peace on you = salam alykom” then he gets the greeting and wish for peace too, but if he said “saam alykum = something bad on you” which in Arabic is hard to differentiate sometimes with salam(peace), he gets back the same.. The hadith comes from the fact that some jews in the time of the prophet peace be upon him would pass him and try to fool him by saying "essam alaykom" instead of "essalam alaykom" and it translates to death and malediction be upon you instead of peace, so Aïcha the wife of the prophet may Allah be pleased with her got angry and started bad mouthing them and the prophet stopped her and told her to just reply "wa alaykom" which translates to "and on you" so if they truly mean well they get their blessings back and if they mean bad they get their own curses back at them too 😁

In the Hadith it is said to greet non-Muslims (not just Jews) exactly how they greet you, and he said “Wa Alaykum”, meaning “and upon you as well”.
Then why didn't he greet with "salaam" back? If the Hadith says to greet back as you were greeted, he said "salaam".
