      Hi, have you checked out the new German microbrand Sternglas Zeitmesser and their Bauhaus Watch, 38mm 20mm lug width, 8mm thickness of case, Sapphire Crystal, you can get them in Swiss Ronda Quartz (no seconds hand) or in a Miyota Automatic (with seconds) movements. At a reasonable price. $€189 for the quartz and €289 for the automatic version. What do you think?

      I have a Max Bill automatic since 2012 and I wear it almost every day. No problem with the acrylic lense, and if you do a little scratch the acrylic is easy to polish.
      Saphir would be more expensive, and I think they do the lense in acrycil because of the particular shape of it ( just look for a side picture of this watch ).
      It's a great watch, and the ETA 2824-2 works perfectly.
      Sorry for my bad english

    The reason DW has carved out such a niche is that none of these companies have an advertising campaign targeted toward the entry level market. Lots of people that don't wear one would get one if it's simple, has a nice strap (which was more important than the watch itself to me before I bought my first piece) and won't break the bank. The pieces exist but nobody apart from enthusiasts know about it! These people aren't being reached and DW filled the gap.
    Gets me quite riled up when I think how close I was to buying a DW and how glad I am that I didn't.

    I bought a DW a few years ago. It was my first watch and it really got me into appreciating and collecting wrist watches. I think the popularity of DW and other "fashion" watches, particularly with younger audiences, should be seen as a net positive for the analogue watch industry in this digital age. And as others in the comments have suggested, it shows the lack of successful marketing by the established watch companies.
    Importantly, I think watch enthusiast like everyone here should be inclusive and inviting to "fashion" watch buyers and, as TGV as done here, try to show them better alternatives and include them in the hobby. Rather than shunning their purchasing decisions and polarising audiences...

    Hello, I am a college student who owns a dw watch. Long story short, I always wanted a watch and with knowing nothing, absolutely nothing, about watches, i thought dw was a good start in getting into collecting watches plus it had the style I wanted. I knew about swiss watches are great, but that was it. The only thing i knew was that they are expensive for me. But then I stumbled upon this video somehow and enjoyed every bit of it. If it is okay with you, I would like introductory videos like watch 101 lol. I really want to get to know about the industry and want to know what "heritage" is worth as you say that certain brand have heritage and such. I am now looking for my second pair and I am prob gonna get it either from timex, junker, or stowa. but anyways I would love to get more insight in the industry :)

    • @elzafir
      @elzafir 6 лет назад +9

      A company with "heritage" are companies that have history in the watch making industries, like the first mechanical watch, the first automatic watch, the first tourbillon, the first quartz, the first kinetic, the first date complications, the first dive watch, the first watch in outer space, the first watch on the moon, etc. It is better to buy entry-level watches from companies with heritage to support them, and have a piece of history on your wrists.
      Watch companies that make their own movements in-house are also considered special. The most affordable brands in this categories are Seiko, Orient, and Citizen. In contrast, Daniel Wellington is a company founded in 2011 by a Swedish businessman and named after a mythical man named "Daniel Wellington" he supposedly met in either England, Hong Kong, or Australia. DW also don't actually make any watches, they simply outsource everything to Chinese factories. People have opened DW watches and found a $5 Miyota 1L22 quartz movement inside it. Miyota is by no means a bad movement manufacturer, their higher end mechanical movements are used by Timex, Bernhardt, Camel, Citizen, Dugena, Festina, Jacques Lemans, Kyboe, Invicta, Lip, Laco, Sternglas and Perseo. But $200 for a cheap quartz watch when you can buy an AUTOMATIC with better materials (sapphire glass, better water resistant, exhibition case back, open heart, etc) for LESS from respectable companies like Tissot, Orient, Timex, Seiko, or even Invicta? Come on.
      Not all companies that are considered high-watchmaking have heritage, though. The Greubel Forsey is a company started in 2004, but the make one of the most complicated and seemingly impossible watches to produce by HAND. They employ 100 people to make only 100 watches per year. The design phase to create these watches could take more than 5 years. Their flagship Greubel Forsey Quadruple Tourbillon costs $815,000 a piece. Robert Downey Jr. wore a cheaper GF to the Infinity War premiere, the Greubel Forsey GMT, which costs around $500,000.
      That said, the gullibleness of today's younger generations is mind boggling. Marketing has convinced them to fork $200 for an outsourced, China mass-produced, cheaply made watch commissioned by a company with a fictitious history, and they are PROUD to have it. *sigh*...humans.

      Stupid kids burning their money or their parents money on cheap “Hype” fashion items just to get that name on their products. One kid even tell me that a 600$ italian made items is worse than a thousands Chinese cheaply made from fashion brand.

    DW is highly popular in my country, you can see almost everyone wearing one. sure they're nice looking, specially with variety of strap options and it made the younger generation start to wear watches more in a way.. but yeah they're a bit too overpriced in my opinion, even starting to be perceived with prestigious value. which doesn't make sense, because to me DW supposed to be something that is accessible or for someone who want to look good without throwing too much money. kinda shame people need to spend 200 bucks + for a asian quarts movement minimalist dress watch.

    As a graphic design graduate who love Bauhaus movement so much I obviously want the Max Bill Junghans. But the Timex is surprisingly looking good for a cheap watch. On the other hand I hate the Orient Gen 3 look. It tried to be Bauhaus but the "Water Resistant" words were written in serif font and Orient logo is a call back to old Medieval or Gothic era so they clashed badly with Bauhaus design that was supposed to be about legibility and geometry (I don't hate the Orient logo though).

    If you like the sunburst silver Hamilton Intra-Matic but want something slightly different with a seconds hand, check out Tisell 9015-A Antique. "Dark silver" sunburst dial with heat-treated blue hands and a second hand, as well as a symmetrical circle date window at 6 oclock. Features domed sapphire glass, exhibition caseback, and the premium Miyota 9015 movement. And only for 195 USD. I have one and love it.
    And apparently the owner of the company (Tisell - a South Korean watchmaker) personally regulates each watch before shipping them out.

    I think Bauhaus is probably the most misused term in this channel.
    I would also add that the Bauhaus is responsible for some of the worst atrocities in architecture and modern housing, on an aesthetical level but also environmental (considering how many concrete blocks are abandoned in Europe).
    In this I would like to use Prince Charles as reference, there are more extensive videos on his opinion about brutalism on RUclips.

    ..damn it, TGV. Your mention of the Junkers got me to casually check eBay. Bauhaus for a ridiculously low price. Auction ended at 4 AM, stayed awake all night. Bailed out as the final price was €20 less than new.
    Cried myself to sleep, woke up to find that I had bid on and won auctions for a Citizen Nighthawk, a Dugena Premium Dessau (Bauhaus-style chronograph) which was probably to ease my loss, and a vintage Sekunda De Luxe handwind for a friend. Total costs would've covered a new Junkers 6088-5 Bauhaus...
    But at least I'm getting two new styles instead of one to add to the collection.

    I'm in need of expertise and guidance. I've only began watching your channel several weeks ago and love your content. I want to start owning watches however, I'm a left handed individual. It's very difficult for me to find great affordable watches for myself. By any chance can you or anyone reading this recommend or help me to find some watches for an individual myself between the $50-$150 price range? Should I just wear the right handed watch on my left hand, backwards on my right hand, or are there any alternatives? Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers!

    • @tunokies
      @tunokies 7 лет назад +4

      Nathan Stickler Most favour the less dominant hand, just because you're less likely to damage the watch. Crown on the right but there are a few exceptions with crowns on the left, however with any watch you should always take it off the wrist before using the crown, so it doesn't really matter. Have fun.

      Nathan Stickler A left handed watch (with its crown at 8) that comes to mind (but is a little over the $150 range) is Citizen NY0040.
      For something that has the flexibility to go left or right handed is the JLC Reverso Duoface but its price bracket requires commitment and serious considerations.

    • @Oozywolf
      @Oozywolf 7 лет назад

      Left handed person here! I just wear normal watches on my right wrist. I now wear my fitbit on my left wrist. It works out pretty well. I've never been bothered by the crown on the other side, in fact I wear my watches close to my hand and I think that the crown would dig in a little if it was the other way around. But as tunokies said, you're never supposed to set the watch while wearing it anyways. I think you might be fine winding it since the stem isn't out, but setting it can lead to a bent crown stem. Not the end of the world (pretty cheap fix - watch brands know this is a weak spot for watches), but best avoided.

    The Timex Fairfield is a sharp watch and very affordable. The indiglo feature makes it very easy to read in the dark. I wish it had a date window, but it's a nice minimalist watch. I like the Fairfield Chronograph but it almost makes the watch too complicated looking. I will probably get a Fairfield soon. I also LOVE the Tissot. It's a quality swiss timepiece at an affordable price.
    I like to see people wearing watches and even if they have a DW watch, they maybe just didn't know any better. Sometimes striking up a conversation with a co-worker about their watch can actually be an opportunity to teach recommend other brands for them to look at and talk about horological history. Just don't come off as a snob or degrading them. I like seeing people wear watches vs. checking a smart phone for the time.

    There are a lot of low end casio quartz that has this minimalist design, most are under 20-30 USD and can last almost a life time. People who buys DW are going for style (or the lack of), ignoring the fact they are paying for the marketing of the company instead of quality. DW are generally worth 15 USD, the cost of the NATO straps that comes with it.

    I cannot stand fashion watches of all kinds, including Swatch, but, hey, that's me. I cannot see the difference between DW, Timex and Swatch other than heritage and, in some cases, price. Otherwise, I cannot agree with glorifying one of these low end quartz pieces over another. There may be micro differences, but they're mostly all of questionable quality with a "disposable" quartz movement inside. It is hard for me to see any real material differences. Now, as to other affordable Bauhaus dress watches you review that have mechanical and, in some cases, in house movements, and even the vintage mechanical versions of Timex and other then-less-expensive pieces, those are entirely different stories that I can appreciate and agree with you over and above any fashion watches. I'm not a quartz snob, but without, at least, build quality, e.g. Breitling Superocean quartz, Rolex rare quartz, Seiko quartz and other comparably well-built pieces, these quartz pieces are at the poor quality end of the entire watch spectrum. Consequently, I would stick with the comparison of even more expensive pieces that you did contrast that were well-worth their premiums.

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  7 лет назад +6

      Thank you, interesting perspective.
      If I lent you my 1968 Timex it might make you think otherwise. After all, I can't see DW making instruments for the boom of the U.S. missilery R&D program in the late 1950s. Timex manufactured various mechanical components for the missiles, including fuzes, gyros, accelerometers, guidance sub-sistems, and various other miniature and sub-miniature precision items ;-)
      This is just one example of this amazing history, for me it matters greatly.
      Best regards,
      TGV

    • @richardt6675
      @richardt6675 7 лет назад

      I agree TGV. Isn't your '68 Timex a mechanical? If so, that supports my position. Had it been a quartz and in today's standards at a low price-point, I feel it would have mattered little if it was a Timex or a DW. Is there a quality difference, probably, but does it register much on the meter, probably not. Again, this is in contrast to your '68 mechanical Timex when it's build quality would have been better and having a mechanical from '68 still ticking ends the debate. :)

    • @Freeroler
      @Freeroler 7 лет назад +13

      There's an important difference: DW charges at least $200 for their watches, Timex Fairfield retails for around $60. I guess, just the fact of how overpriced they are drives people crazy. In that case, Timex is a honest brand that does not try to make a better impression or claim that they 'disrupt the industry'.

For me personally, it's all about taking things for what they are. You will be amazed by how much fun it is collecting fun inexpensive quartz watches simply for the love of watches and collecting. Of course mechanical are great as i have many myself, but one should not hold them on a pedestal as the only respectable choice.

    before getting to know more about dress watches, I wanted to buy one of those DW, some how never got to it. Preferred Seiko, Casio & HMT. TGV sir thanks for saving me.

    I don’t understand why people buy DW. The amount of people I see with them is incredible. I also once saw a guy wearing one with a hand that had come off!

      For them watch is about fashion statement. So they don't even care for the time telling that much.

    Once again all great watches. But Tristano, when I saw Nomos I questioned the title (affordable alternative) even though you did mention the price. Don't take this the wrong way, (huge fan) But I'm in the under 400 margin, but many of these were above that, although that is still more expensive than the DW. Keep on rocking!

    One thing I love about my DW is how thin it is. It fits perfectly under my shirt cuff. I love these recommendations (Junghans and Nomos especially) and will research to see which one is the thinnest.

    I love the value of the Tissot Everytime, was ready to pay for it.....until I saw they decided to put 21mm lugs width! The designer that decided to go for that size instead of 20 or 22 mm should be fired.😡 you can't find Milanese straps for it and leather choices are extremely limited. Such a bad decision.

    I don't know if your are going to respond to this but I really want an original grain watch. Should I buy one it's for 150. Anyone respond. I think the watch is beautiful but i don't know if it's a ripoff.
