- Our friend @jacquesinthegarden did a great job of breaking down the mushroom bed-making process with this Wine Cap tutorial! His growing style is particularly relevant to folks in warmer, temperate climates as his garden is located in San Diego, where folks can make beds all year-round. #mushrooms #fungi #northspore #spreadthespore #gardeningideas #mushroomcultivation #growingmushrooms
I recognised Jacques’ voice right away 😭💟
Jacques?!?! Your on north spore now? That's so cool. I just started using north spore bags. Really enjoying the experience. I wanna try growing wine caps but gotta try the lions mane first. Great video!!
I was just saying to myself “ I know this damn voice !” 😮
No they just used his video he made on mushrooms and put it on their channel. At least they have him credit in the description (but no one ever looks there so it really should be in the title) lol.
i litteraly soy faced like --> Ö when i heard what sounded to me zhaques
@@zionjeffers7204same!!
I didn’t realize this was possible! Thank you for this easy to follow video
Look up the importance of fungal:bacterial ratio in crops and the soil food web school on youtube
This is the best thing to do on flower/crop beds! Acts as a mulch that keeps water in the soil through the summer etc, yet also utilizes the space to grow food WHILST you're growing other food! (Pumpkins/tomatoes/brassicas etc)
This is a great video 👍
❤ I did that with Oyster mushroom this year.
I was half paying attention but then I heard Jaques and I was like - friend? Hello?
Finally an instructional vodeo that teaches without all thatsterilizing
I mean you still need to sterilize when you initially introduce spores to the substrate, this is just the end steps.
You do need to make sure that you aren't growing something else. Mushrooms are decomposers, just like mold. It's just that the mycelium has an immune system by the time it's fully developed like that. If you're inoculating spores into a bag like that, you need to make sure the bag is sterile, or you'll most likely lose it to mold or bacteria.
If you're buying your mycelium from a vendor, you don't need to worry about it so much
Iv never tried wine caps but I plan to grow them in my outdoor bed this spring. Alongside garden giants
I recommend to put holes in logs. Bury it with straw and a mix of wood chips. They spread like wildfire. Massive clumps.
Awesome
Great production! :P
They make really good soup. You know that. Its almost season for those here
Looks pretty easy. I think they are pretty
I knew I recognized that voice!!
I swear Jacques is a mind reader because as I recently ordered a mushroom spawn 😂
Wow nice
Love this!
Amazing 👏
That is so awesome
Perfect. Going to start my spawn order . Lol
Jacques in the Garden is always a good watch... he may have dropped out of his PHD, but he has atleast earned an honary PHD in "how to grow" and is a polymath, if not a savant.
Brilliant thank you
Ferment ya woodchips for 3 weeks. It allows the mycelium to take over the wood chips much easier.
What do you soak your woodchips with to ferment them
What kind of wood chips and what do you ferment them in?
I'm sure I want to do this
Hey... I know that person... 😊 Good content all around!

Oh I dream of not being stuck in a tiny apartment. I would love to be living like you, establishing obscure vegetables! Or are mushrooms even vegetables? 🥕 😂
Start a tiny one on the windowsill, no?
Until then, try sprouting seeds in a Mason jar, or growing microgreens in a shallow dish. Lots of information on RUclips. And if you have a balcony, grow Swiss chard or kale in a pot. 😊
You can actually grow mushrooms in an apartment if you have enough space in your closet. They don't need any light for the first stages of their development, so you can grow them in your home.
Watch out for Oysters, though, it's hard to get them to *stop* growing in your home.
Where did you put these Jacques? Shade? Partial sun? How often did you have to water?
You'll want to keep your mushrooms in a shady area, or else they might dry out! Only water your bed if it feels dry. If you're in an area that doesn't get consistent rain, consider watering it every few days to help the mycelium grow! Hot/dry climates can make it tricky to grow mushrooms, but it's not impossible.
Jacques! 😀
How often do you have to water and FYI I live in high desert so how much more do yall suppose?
It really depends how much it rains (sounds like not much where you are). If it hasn't rained for 3-4 days, I would water.
Where do you get clean straw like that?
I used 20 year old straw and it worked but you won't get a very big crop it works and dirtier straw doesn't need to be clean
You can pour boiling water on straw to make it 'clean' of any other bacterias or mushrooms competing against your preferred mushrooms.
farm supply stores
Do you need hot climates to grow these?
Nope, these will grow all over the place. We're in Maine and they work very well.
Great video! Beautiful mushrooms. When you say wood chips, does mulch from a garden center qualify?
Better if it's fresh hardwood chips and/or straw. We recommend contacting local arborists, using a woodchip delivery service, or even aspen pet bedding works!
Thanks soooo much for the info. I look forward to giving it a try.
Can this be grown in tropical climate
Wine caps are basically predatory toward all nematodes including the beneficial ones, are there any mushrooms that form a beneficial relationship with beneficial nematodes?
Probably, but I don't have info on it. Interesting question!
do you have any sources for this? i can only find documentation supporting the theory that they eat harmful nematodes. i'd love to know more about how they interact with beneficials!
@@NorthSporethis response is a bit confusing because on your website about these mushrooms, it states "Other fun facts: Wine caps trap parasitic nematodes in the soil and eat them as a convenient source of protein." This makes it seem like beneficials aren't harmed?
Do they eat those invasive ones with the disgusting flat heads that are basically impossible to kill?
What kind of sun/shade and temperature?? Do you have to water it periodically?
The more shade the better, with some indirect sunlight, though wine caps can tolerate more sun than other species. You should definitely water the beds if you are in a particularly dry area, but will depend on weather in your region 🙂
I wonder how do you know what kind of mushrooms are good to eat
Hundreds are edible and there's no simple way to know. You have to start by just learning about some easy edible species and easy poisonous ones.
I find it hard to find hard wood chips in my area.
Have you contacted local arborists and checked chipdrop.com?
Oh this is that guy that works for the Epic Gardening “youtube cartel”
What time of year was this video made? And where? Thanks!
Can they be in the sun or should they be shaded
Indirect sun is best 👍
How did you inoculate the straw?
Ye
Are wine caps for cooking or for microdose
Cooking!
Where do you get your mushroom spawn..i want to grown some
You can get it here: northspore.com/products/wine-cap-sawdust-spawn
@@NorthSpore thankyou
Would this work in Seattle where it's really wet?
Absolutely.
The PNW actually has an abundance of wild fungi due to how wet it gets. You live in the perfect climate!
Do you saoaw them or do they come by them self
You inoculate a bed using sawdust spawn (like seeds) 🙂
@@NorthSpore ok so the process starts from the Sawdust spon. Can i be sure that something poison won't grow, and i only get mushrooms, Thank you
👍🏾👍🏾
How to distinguish between pousonus and non poisonous mushrooms ,because there are mushrooma which are deadly
Basically it's a matter of learning the identifying characteristics of each species. It's not really an issue when you're growing them, because you know the species you planted, but foraging them in the wild can be dangerous, and you shouldn't eat them unless you *know* what species they are and that they are not poisonous.
You can identify mushrooms by looking at their identifying features, the shape of their caps, their stems, what color they turn when they bruise, their color, and the shape and type of their gills (underside of the cap). ALL of these need to line up to know what species it is, but you can practice by just looking at the mushrooms you see on your walks, and identifying each of these to build skill.
Always keep a guidebook on hand to double check with, too
There are key components to identifying a mushroom, including physical characteristics, doing a spore print, and location in which it was found. We always recommend consulting with an expert if you are unsure!

woodchips-what kind of wood?
Thank you for the question! This article goes into detail on outdoor growing, including the best site prep and materials: northspore.com/pages/outdoor-mushroom-beds
@northspore Do you really need destilled water ?
Not for outdoor growing. You can just use the stuff coming out of your hose!
Can edible mushrooms breed with poisonous ones?
The simple answer is no and for the same reason that we cannot breed with a chimp.
Is it even safe to eat them? I study alot about safe edible food and the skirt is a sign of also being poisonous.
This is an edible variety that we sell everyday and people eat all over the USA, I promise. What you say about the skirt being and indication of poison is simply and entirely false. Most of those indicators of poison we think about in nature, such as bright colors, just don't apply broadly to mushrooms.
So basically no direct sunlight area
The more shade, the better!
Still waiting for our first flush after almost 3 months!
Did they ever fruit for you? Did you dig down and see mycelium?
@@NorthSpore Nope. Will check.
Where can I get some culture?
Here: northspore.com/ 🙂
mine didnt work out :/
What time of year is best to start them?
If you're in the Northeast, mid to late spring (after the last frost) is usually best!
Can u do this indoors?
Wine caps can be done, but don't work well indoors. There are many other options for indoor cultivation!
No sterilization?
Not necessary outdoors, especially with wine cap or oyster mushrooms 🙂
@@NorthSpore Interesting
Why do you cut them
Cutting is bit cleaner, but pulling is fine too.
Me
please let me know if you can send me some myceliuim block to nepal
I'm afraid it's too hot and dry here.
Where do you live?
can you send me some 😢 mycelluim of these mushroom please ,

I don't think San Diego is generally considered the southwest. Even though... you know.
Who else wanna know if you can’t get high off them 😂😂😂or this the wrong channel 😂😂
Wine Caps aren't gonna get you high haha, but they are delicious when cooked properly!
Ringged mushrooms are poisonous
This is false information.
Do these Pacific mushrooms get you high
