I used newspaper and cardboard underneath wood chips and compost for years, but within a couple years of gardening as a business, I found that the layers of paper either were quickly eaten by worms, or in the absence of worms they did not decompose easily and stopped water and roots from penetrating the soil. 2 inches or more of mulch will stop all but large seeds. 6 inches or more of compost or a foot of leaves will grow monster vegetables. How well did the paths fruit? Any future videos about cooking and preparing your harvest? You guys put together a nice video. Thanks for sharing.
The Wine Caps in the paths are still bumping. We've gotten a ton of Wine Caps from them. It seems like they choose to grow along the paths edges where they get a little more shade from the plants. The foot traffic on the paths doesn't disturb the mycelium much, but you definitely have to watch where you step when they are growing!
Hi Heather. Last week I asked you about freeze drying Lions Main. You said you would do it update and you did. So I wanted to say thank you. Have a great day.
Psychedelics saved me from years of uncontrollable depression, anxiety and illicit pill addiction. Imagine carrying heavy chains for over a decade and then all of a sudden that burden is gone. Believe it or not in a couple years they'll be all over for treatment of mental health related issues.
The best video I've seen on growing mushrooms. All others you have to make contraptions and wash your hands 87 times in alchohol with perfect room temps and perfect lighting. I was like I thought these things grew in nature. Why cant I just grow them outside? Lol
Just received the some of your Oyster and Wine Cap, the bags don't look as full of mycelium as yours, do you suggest to break it up a bit, wait for more mycelial growth?
They leave the facility fully colonized, but sometimes don't look it upon arrival because they got beat up during shipping. Let them sit on a shelf for about a week at 70-75 degrees and you should see regeneration.
A lot of our mushroom species really prefer the majority of the food source to be woody. Using straw along with the other debris, maybe 50/50, could be excellent for a mushroom like wine cap.
Great video. One comment on mulching. If you're buying mulch straw works and looks nicer. I fertilize with cow manure. My soil already is sown with every weed that those cows consumed , so when I mulch with waste hay I have fewer weeds in the mulched area than elsewhere(unmulched) and they pull easier if you keep up with it. I only mulch potatoes and wine caps would work great in the furrow.
Thank you for this excellent video that really simplifies mushroom growing. I love the idea of putting the grain spawn into my raised veggie beds, and mulching with straw. My biggest question which wasn't addressed in the vid (otherwise so thorough!) is timing of inoculation. Thank you for the compliments, we care about your success! Great question, the general rule of thumb for outdoor beds is to build them early enough in the fall that the bed will colonize before freezing and become dormant until spring. After last frost is another popular time to build a bed and you'll likely see fruits later that year! Either way is fine, it just depends on when you're ready!
@@NorthSpore I just got a variety of your oyster grain spawn delivered a from you few days ago, and very excited to put them in my raised veg beds in the next few days! I already have seedlings in my beds, so I was thinking to work in spawn into the top inch or so of compost by hand between the plants. Does this sound correct?
