So growing in the garden is right up my alley. And y'all did a great job of explaining it all.Thank you.
I can explain. Mushrooms let off billions of spores. The mushrooms play the odds that the spore will find a place where they can out compete bacteria and other fungi. In your house you want mushrooms to colonize the substrate everytime. When you already have a lot nice healthy mycelium contamination is less likely and your mushrooms can take over.

I used newspaper and cardboard underneath wood chips and compost for years, but within a couple years of gardening as a business, I found that the layers of paper either were quickly eaten by worms, or in the absence of worms they did not decompose easily and stopped water and roots from penetrating the soil. 2 inches or more of mulch will stop all but large seeds. 6 inches or more of compost or a foot of leaves will grow monster vegetables. Wood chips on paths are slow to decompose and stop smaller-seeded weeds until they do.

This video made me feel better about your wine cap spores that my husband & I laid out late spring which haven’t really done anything yet 😅 So far we’ve harvested maybe 5 mushrooms & I was starting to worry if that was it 😓 ~ from Pennsylvania
Thank you so much for this video. Amazing ideas and I loved seeing the results. I would like to proffer an idea. I have found that when mulching young trees, especially transplants, it is best to form the mulch into a ring. Don't short the interior on depth mind you. But the ring, especially at the drip line of little trees, helps to channel and retain moisture directly over the roots. It also makes it very easy to add a weeper hose or drip line ring for easy watering in drier climates. I am so going to try your ideas out.
I'm in Louisiana and temperatures get high here. The most stable, cool temps are underground so I like to use post hole diggers and make about a 2' hole. Then I fill it with alternating wood chips, leaves, or straw and spawn. I find that the leaves and straw tend to collapse pretty quickly and you'll have to add more to top it off in comparison to the woods chips. Also, don't put it where you'll break your ankle walking through! You'll get mushrooms pinning from the top and even a few feet away in the dirt. I shade the area when I see this with whatever I have handy and keep it moist. I think it really helps put some nutrients and organic matter into the soil and it's awesome to have the extra harvest from normally wasted space
Super cool, I love what you guys are doing, love the idea, I hope I can do some of what you are doing with local stuff, or maybe import some of your spores than can handle the tropical weather to the Dominican Republic.
this is amazing. I'm building a new veggie bed and was looking into adding mushrooms to the garden. We had button mushrooms in my childhood home. So I'm excite dto try some of these.
Really excellent information here. I do have mushrooms pop up next to my organic compost, recently some big edible ones that must of came with my mushroom compost that was mixed with coffee grounds. May give this a go soon. Thanks Marty
Thank you so much. Awesome video!! I love to eat mushroom..I love your presentation.I will try that. May our good Lord bless everyone of you..God bless.😀💖🙏
Incredible video! I love how all this information is available freely online 💕 do you have any videos of tours of your gardens with established mushrooms? 🤩
Been growing Wine Caps in the garden for a couple years now. Not only do I have the added mushrooms benefiting the soil, but the wood chips I mulch with keeps the soil moisture higher. I can see a difference in the productivity of beds inoculated with the mushrooms and those that aren't.
Inoculated woodchip beds with oyster and Winecap last May (2020) - the oyster came up months later. The Winecap only came up a few weeks ago, and they came up EVERYWHERE - they were busy taking over the paths and a pile of spare woodchips. We’ve been eating and giving them away for nearly a month now!
Try to find your shadiest place, keep your mushroom substrate hydrated by watering frequently, and choose species that do well in warmer climates (pink oysters or Italian oysters are great options)
I’m also in Zone 9 and thought it would not be possible to grow mushrooms here, but this summer I noticed several varieties pop up in different shade areas. The base of a peach tree played host to a giant yellow plate-like mushroom of some kind that was as big as a dinner plate. So now I want to try to grow something I will recognize and be able to eat! Thanks, great video!
Just harvested a flush of winecaps from a patch I started with your sawdust spawn early this spring, left a couple to sporulate to keep it going next year. Delicious!
This was a great video. I believe I will be attempting some new companion planting. My first thoughts about the pathways were concern about trampling most of the fruiting spawn. How well did the paths fruit? Any future videos about cooking and preparing your harvest? You guys put together a nice video. Thanks for sharing.
The Wine Caps in the paths are still bumping. We've gotten a ton of Wine Caps from them. It seems like they choose to grow along the paths edges where they get a little more shade from the plants. The foot traffic on the paths doesn't disturb the mycelium much, but you definitely have to watch where you step when they are growing!
I’ve been told wood chips only rob the soil of nitrogen when they are mixed into the soil not when they are applied dire to the top. I use about a foot in a half on my edible garden and it does really well.
No, though there is certainly the possibility. It's why we emphasize the importance of knowing how to identify the species you're trying to cultivate. We did have some inky cap Coprinus mushrooms growing in our garden over the summer. They can be poisonous if consumed alongside alcohol, but they look nothing like any of the species we were cultivating! The same holds true with cultivating plants- there is always the potential something poisonous will become a weed and grow in your garden, but you probably won't confuse it with your cucumbers!
also! the Inky Caps aren't deadly poisonous when consumed with alcohol, but they will make you vomit! They produce the same compound used in drugs to treat alcoholism
This is exactly what I was looking for when I started searching ways of growing mushrooms, rather than the very scientific sterile and controlled environment. Thanks!

Very cool. I would love to learn more about that technique. Do you know of any English language resources on it?
This video made me feel better about your wine cap spores that my husband & I laid out late spring which haven’t really done anything yet 😅 So far we’ve harvested maybe 5 mushrooms & I was starting to worry if that was it 😓 ~ from Pennsylvania
That's a good sign! It is likely they are waiting for ideal cooler weather conditions that are starting to happen now!
I am so going to try your ideas out.
this is so amazing & complete!
do you have a video on how to improve garden soil with mushroom? Thanks
Not yet! But we will take the suggestion to make one (probably next year as we are going headfirst into winter here in Maine...)
This is so cool! Thank you all so much for your creativity and advice.
Our pleasure! Thank you for watching!
Great video! I plan on growing Wine Caps and Snow Oysters this year or next.
Thanks
Marty
Sounds great! Let us know how it goes!
This is very timely information. We are new to mushroom growing but we are already thinking about all the possibilities. Thanks for sharing.
Happy to help! Reach out with questions anytime.
OMG IM OBSESSSSSSSSSED WITH ALL THIS!🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Mush love!
I think I’m going to cry. So beautiful...
are you going to try your own mushroom garden?
Great video, thank you! Are they gonna fruit over the next seasons or is it a one-off thing?
Thank you so much. Awesome video!!
I love to eat mushroom..I love your presentation.I will try that.
May our good Lord bless everyone of you..God bless.😀💖🙏
You are so welcome!
Dude! i can't wait to do this!!! This is amazing!!! thank you for the information!
Any time! We're here to help if you have any further questions!
If your crop is applied properly, fewer people in the world would be hungry! You have the knowledge and the good will to help! Thanks!
Very true!
Excellent content & super informative. Can't wait for more of these.
More to come! Thank you for watching!
Omg! Thank you! I've been looking for a video on growing mushrooms and viola!! 😊 sooo good!
Incredible video! I love how all this information is available freely online 💕 do you have any videos of tours of your gardens with established mushrooms? 🤩
Thank you! Check out our other videos here:northspore.com/pages/videos
Awy Murray has been working
Been growing Wine Caps in the garden for a couple years now. Not only do I have the added mushrooms benefiting the soil, but the wood chips I mulch with keeps the soil moisture higher. I can see a difference in the productivity of beds inoculated with the mushrooms and those that aren't.
That's awesome. Wine Caps are definitely unsung heroes for helping veggies. Thank you for sharing
Awesome video, awesome team!
Thanks for sharing so valuable information ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love to hear it!
wow! that's what I was looking for
I wonder what I have to do so it will grow in zone 9 (other than guaranteeing proper hydration)
Hi i watch the vid and got my interest in mushroom farming
Awesome, just starting my mycelium adventure!

Amazing video! Clear, straightforward. Also loved seeing how the mushrooms grown at the end.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@NorthSpore since you guys don't ship to Europe, I was wondering maybe you could recommend a good company to buy from?
What about what are called " baby bell " mushrooms ?
Do you cultivate them & what are the growing conditions ?
Just harvested a flush of winecaps from a patch I started with your sawdust spawn early this spring, left a couple to sporulate to keep it going next year. Delicious!
That is awesome! Keep us updated!
Good to know, thanks!
This is a great idea! Have you all ever notice any poisonous, look-alike shrooms growing amongst what you’ve inoculated?
This is seriously one of the best things I've ever seen im my whole life.
Mush love!
