    Seems to work for me. I was diagnosed (sleep study) with mild apnea. I use a small piece of medical microporous tape to connect top and bottom lips. No need to cover entire mouth. Comes off easy and provides just enough adhesion to help keep my mouth shut at night. I experience less sore throat and dry mouth when taping. I also am more conscious not to mouth breathe while awake. Supposedly nasal breathing increases Nitric oxide production which has vascular benefits.

      It has been about six years for me. Some claim they can stop once trained but not me. I do 2 vertical strips on the corners. I start at my jaw by the chin and pull up tight. I can still sip through a straw, cough, and talk somewhat to pets kind of like a ventriloquist. If I do not pull tight though i still snore. I think it helps jaw sagging too.

    I use a ResMed Aircurve ASV and an N30i nasal mask. Mouth taping helps greatly with this mask to reduce mask leaks and lower my AHI significantly. I take videos while I sleep and have stopped exhaling out of my mouth. Mouth taping certainly works well for me.

    Have moderate SA and am on cpap. Starting cpap, my leak rates were horrible, no matter what mask I used, so far, I've tried 6. Started mouth taping 3 months ago and leak rates have gotten better, not under 25 but not 50 and 60 anymore. As someone else commented, it has made me more concious to breath through my nose during the day and something I never knew before starting cpap, sleeping with the mouth open is the cause of some cavities in adults and before mouth taping, I seem to have at least one more cavitiy per year.

    • @mesenteria
      @mesenteria 10 месяцев назад

      Is your AHI more than about 4-5? If so, you are not being treated. There's no reason for a person with controlled leakage and proper delivery to have an AHI much more than 3.0 routinely, and I have a five year average of only 0.6...week over week, month over month... I also tape, but I tape only because I mouth breathe....all the air will blast out of my mouth. If tape doesn't work well for anyone, make sure the mouth area is clean (I wash my lip area with soap and water prior to affixing the tape), use a suitable tape (Somnifix or 3M NexCare tapes), and ensure your machine is the correct one and that it is programed to deliver the proper therapy. Even make sure the mask type is set into the machine's program. It matters.

    I have tried taping my mouth with athletic tape. The tape covers the entire mouth. There are 3 slits cut into the tape to allow breathing but does not allow the mouth to open. The tape alone does not help. However, when I use an ePAP device, my apneas per night goes from 179 to 35. The O2 saturation low goes from 75% to 85%. So when combined with other tools, the taping works.
    In the discussion, reference was made to difficulty nose breathing. I have worked with a doctor who uses a balloon to open the nasal passages. This works very well to help with nasal breathing. Worthwhile to try. It does not necessarily stop snoring.

    The good Dr. Failed to discuss a leading reason for mouth taping! I wonder if she has ever heard about “dry mouth” associated with use of a CPAP machine? The CPAP provides plenty of oxygen during the sleep process and the discharge of its air flow through the mouth can cause Dry Mouth which in itself has troublesome health consequences. I challenge her to examine this issue and amend her position on mouth taping.

    Mouth taping has been a great help for me thus far. I use a bipap machine and have successfully done so for over 12 years. But--I needed to stop mouth puffing, and full blow-throughs of air after losing 42 pounds. Prior to mouth taping, I got almost no sleep at night. Since starting mouth taping I do manage to get more sleep. It is not a cure-all or magical. It's only helpful in cases where you can get sleep no other way. That is my situation. I am also careful to use medical, paper tape. Air has to still be able to pass through. I use Nexcare gentle paper tape by 3M. And each night I clear my nasal passages with a saline flush, and follow that with my Flonase nasal spray. I think you can tell that I use as many cautious, prudent add-ons as I can along with the mouth taping. Please be respectful of what you need to do to SAFELY mouth tape.
