Not breathing with your mouth also helps with strengthening and having a more defined jawline. Have you heard of Mewing? I've been doing it for a year or two and has been changing my jaw structure.
After listening to a couple podcasts/videos with James Nestor a couple years ago, I started my nighttime nose breathing routine using blue painter’s tape. Small vertical strip from a 1” roll works great. Sticky enough that it rarely comes off during the night and has caused no skin issues. The vertical orientation leaves little gaps at edges of the mouth if I need to talk through the tape. Wife thinks I’m bonkers, but it really prevents nighttime dry mouth. Also trying to focus on nose breathing when I exercise. Have used the same taping routine a couple of times for that, but it’s not something I’ve done regularly. Considering trying that again.
I did this about a year ago myself for a while. I wanted to try something, as I always woke up feeling groggy. I found it worked, but just fell out of the habit (mainly due to my firstborn coming along) I was cheap and just used bandaging tape. Worked fine for me and I definitely felt more alert in the most part.
There also is evidence that the shape of your face changes depending on whether you're a mouth or a nose breather! Like your cheekbones, jawline and eyes will develop a lot better and look more prominent when you have your mouth closed most of the time! It would be interesting if you would keep it up and update on that as well!! :) Great and helpful video as always! Thank you!!
For side sleepers, and especially those with a narrow nasal passage, I highly & personally recommend Breathe Right nasal strips, especially if you are going to try this.

I tried this two years ago at uni, I walked over to the bathroom to take a piss and forgot I was wearing the tape, was hard to explain to my flatmate when he saw me in just my boxers looking like an absolute psycho.

The trick is nose strips, not mouth tape. Ones forced, the other just allows you to more easily breathe through your nose. Your body would choose it if the passages are open.
The Oura ring is basically a scam. It's very inaccurate, especially at measuring REM, temperature and sleep latency. There's even an article on Medium where someone tried two Oura rings at the same time and even then the measurement were very different to each other. The only way to measure one's sleep is a polysomnography in a certified lab. Also read the article by Anthony Pearson MD on MedPage Today.

Of all the people to tell me to tape my mouth shut...
*I never thought it would be you Ali* 🤐🤐🤐

No one says nothing?
Nice little experiment.
But, I'd definitely suffocate if I tried this.
Same lmfao
Not for everyone...You can die in middle of air if you suffer from certain breathing problems which require mouth breathing
Me: tons of stuff to do for work and courses to complete.
RUclips: hey, watch this guy sleeping with a mouth tape
Me: sure!
Great and helpful video as always! Thank you!!
I’m pretty sure my flat mates wish I did this 😂😂😂
For side sleepers, and especially those with a narrow nasal passage, I highly & personally recommend Breathe Right nasal strips, especially if you are going to try this.
isn't this risky? I mouthbreathe while sleeping but the only reason I haven't done it is what if my nose get blocked and I'm not able to breathe at all
the other day i commented
"next: my insanely productive sleep"
Ali: hold my iTape
If I start that, my wife will keep my mouth taped shut 24/7, and then I'll never be able to talk again.
More like, my flatmate made me sleep with my mouth taped shut for 30 days.....
Lol tape his mouth = saliva building blocks
Vgggggg
I have been using 3M micropore tape for about a year now as my snoring is awful. It works pretty well and is much cheaper.
I would love to try this but also I don't want to die in such a humiliating way 😂
Exactly this.
Doesn’t work like that. It’s quite safe.
@@RogueCylon theres a hole he said i think its for emergency situation
And if you will not able to breath
You will probably wakeup
That's silly, you'll wake up if you start suffocating. Unless you decide to die, idk
@@forgetfulstranger most of the nights i sleep with my mouth taped and one night for unknown reason i vomitted and instantly i waked up and removed the tape. Its the miracle of God in our life. All it requires a free hands and its safe.
Nah Ali I can't this, this is too much 😂

Next 30 day challenge:
Going on a date every day for 30 days.
This is not ideal for people with deviated septum. I suffer from it and I cannot even lie down without having to breathe through my mouth.
I used to sleep with my mouth open and would occasionally drool a lot. Thanks to mouth taping, this is no longer an issue.

This is the MOST unique experiment I have ever heard of!! First I thought this video was sarcasm and a click bait....but OMG Ali, you did your research and bought official sleeping mouth tape!! I shouldn't expect anything less. 😋 Ali, you never cease to make me laugh. Thanks so much for sharing this!! I always learn something new from you.
the level of confusion I had clicking on this video 😂

Check out a product called “Intake Breathing”.
It uses magnets you tape to your nose, and connects to a plastic piece you put over the bridge of your nose with another set of magnets in it.
It helps keep your nose open wider.
Great combo of taping your mouth and using tools to assist your nose.
I once woke up gasping for air into the upright position. I had acid reflux which came up into my throat and blocked my airway!! dont tape your mouth shut, you never know!
Ali if you feel like your nose is regularly blocked you might wanna try giving up dairy.
That was a total game changer for me
You should read “Breath” by James Nestor. Fantastic book, it talks about everything you said in your video.
Im going to read it
@@georgegray2712 is evidence the new religion? Just try it it’s pretty self explanatory ... tape mouth more nose breathing... healthier breathing... if it works for you then it works for you
If you haven't read 'Breath' by James Nestor yet, I highly recommend. He talks about mouth taping and gives a bit more of the science into the advantages of nasal breathing, having overall health benefits, not just sleep.
I confess.
I clicked on this video as a joke.
But within just the first few minutes, I was genuinely hooked.
Great video, Ali!
This will go along very nicely with my severe chronic rhinitis
Me: I haven't watched an Ali Abdaal video in a while, let's see what he's up to.
Ali:
I tried this two years ago at uni, I walked over to the bathroom to take a piss and forgot I was wearing the tape, was hard to explain to my flatmate when he saw me in just my boxers looking like an absolute psycho.
I’ve been going this for awhile now after i read “Breath” by James Nestor. Life changer for me, sleep apnea runs in the family and I’ve always been a snorer. Hope this will help me out long term
Did it help you with snorking?
The trick is nose strips, not mouth tape. Ones forced, the other just allows you to more easily breathe through your nose. Your body would choose it if the passages are open.
The Oura ring is basically a scam. It's very inaccurate, especially at measuring REM, temperature and sleep latency. There's even an article on Medium where someone tried two Oura rings at the same time and even then the measurement were very different to each other. The only way to measure one's sleep is a polysomnography in a certified lab. Also read the article by Anthony Pearson MD on MedPage Today.
