    My dad actually won a lot at blackjack in Vegas. The casino did get suspicious that they changed dealers, cards, made him go to a different table and kept a close eye on him. Thing is my dad wasn't counting cards because he doesn't know how, he was just having a really good night.

      Traviiis48 it's not illegal but several casinos see it as cheating. And after winning a certain amount of money, you will be escorted to cash out and then the nearest exit. Casinos also have several systems in place to counteract card counters.

    • @stupidichigo99
      @stupidichigo99 7 лет назад +61

      Not entirely true. Casinos will not immediately make counters cash out and force them to leave. Casinos want your money and they would prefer if costumers kept playing their "fair" games. But to make it "fair" for the casino, common stipulation after they detect counting would be to allow these players to continue playing, but not be able to change their bets. Either that or encourage them to try other types of games (where counting is obsolete).

    • @Trigular
      @Trigular 7 лет назад +23

      stupidichigo99 From the casinos I have worked in and have played in, what I stated previously is the major consensus. The only other difference I've seen is that casino operations allow the counter to stay in order to win their money back, or if said counter starts tipping, which puts the casino in a very difficult spot.

    • @audiesleepy9903

    What makes it hard seems not to be the actual counting, but to make it appear like you're not counting. This means not moving your lips at all, barely moving your eyes and looking at the peripherals of your vision, all while constantly doing addition/subtraction and division on the fly.

    • @Mugarlin
      @Mugarlin 7 лет назад +667

      The counting really even isn't the issue.. it's the bets you make when you believe you have the advantage. The second you begin to bet weirdly you will have every pitboss with half a brain watching you.. (they're all trained heavily when it comes to spotting counters) along with every camera and dealer. You can make all the weird faces you want while counting.. it's the weird bets that catch their attention.

    • @RB26DETT_
      @RB26DETT_ 7 лет назад +139

      Why is card counting frowned upon?

    • @Mugarlin
      @Mugarlin 7 лет назад +323

      Because you can get a 1% edge if you play perfectly and bet in right spots and ACTUALLY get the cards you need.. (It's still a game of chance regardless of the count). In other words.. With that $1,000 bank roll... you could make a whole $10 over a 2 hour session. Of course all this matters if you're actually able to find a casino that DOESN'T have auto shufflers or pitbosses watching your every move after making a weird $300 bet when you've been betting $25/$50 for an hour straight... i.e.. It's simply not viable anymore and tbh.. never really was. Unless you had a huge bankroll and played in groups.. 1% never really added up otherwise.

    It takes a lot of practice...but there’s some pitfalls involved with counting.
    As Alan in the Hangover said, it helps if you have a spotter like in the movie 21. There is actually very little time when the true count is really in your favor. So you may spend hours trudging through negative counts or mostly even counts.
    Sometimes your deck will start off very high card heavy. Of course you have no way of knowing that, you’ve won most of your bets, but youve been min betting and now the deck is halfway done and the running count is -18.
    You also have to keep track of everything while small chatting, dealing with cocktail waitresses talking to you, and making the right moves.
    Ive been so caught up in my count that ive made the wrong move or added wrong on my total and stood when I should’ve hit.

    I sort of counted cards when I used to play blackjack, but I didn't count every single card with a point system. I just paid attention to trends. For example if there was a lot of low cards played, I knew the odds of a face card coming up increased, which gave me insight on how to bet. So I'd bet low to start every deck and just play normal, while watching for patterns, and then increase my bets accordingly. It was pretty successful for me, but would anger the other players at the table because I'd often play unconventional towards the end of the deck.
    For instance, say I had a 14 and the dealer had a 5 showing, the conventional method tells you to stay and let the dealer bust. But because I was paying attention to the high-low cards already played, and knew there was way more face cards played than low ones, I knew there was a bunch of low cards left in the deck. And thus if I didn't hit, the dealer was gonna get the low cards and beat me. So I'd hit and end up with like 19-20 and win, but it messed up everyone else at the table who were playing conventionally lol.

Shuffling doesn't really have any effect, as you just restart your process after every shuffling. You bet low at the beginning, then as you gather info of which cards have already been played, you can start betting more towards the end of the round. Then do the same process again after they shuffle.

    • @MikeRosoftJH
      @MikeRosoftJH 2 года назад +1

      @@tsurin-2160 Of course. Without card counting (but otherwise playing the ideal strategy), you will - at average in the long run - lose something like 1% of the money you bet. With card counting, you will in the long run in the long run win 1% instead. (The exact numbers depend on the actual game rules.) The card counting gives you an idea of the approximate composition of the remaining cards in the deck; that is, whether the cards are in your or the house's favor (and so whether to bet high, or else to bet low or leave the table), plus it allows you to vary the strategy (for example, if the count is high - that is, there are a significant number of tens and aces left in the deck - it is more advantageous to double even when basic strategy tells you that you shouldn't do that). But no matter what, you don't know what the next card will be (that is, unless the dealer accidentally exposes it).

    Yes... I use this method all the time in the casinos and it works. However I count the aces and 2's as zero's. Which in turn makes things a bit easier. I win most of the time, but it can be a real grind when the count stays around zero. Not to mention the swings in the count can put you way ahead or way behind real fast. You just got to be ready for it if and when it happens.

    • @kensmith7918

      I agree most of the time it can be a real grind. Since the true count is less than or equal to +1 about 70% of the time, you're either betting minimum or Wonging out often. Only about 0.5% of the time do you reach that max bet count when it get really interesting and you win or lose a lot in just a couple minutes.

If you get one or two rounds with a lot of face and high cards, expect the next round or the round after to be mostly low cards. Definitely not foolproof or consistently accurate but its better than nothing.

    I also went to MIT about 15 years before the MIT blackjack Team. I was a physics major. I first did this with another physics major, my study partner at MIT All he says here is true but he has neglected to tell you about the tables that tell you whether to split pairs, hit or stand, double down, soft double, etc based on what the true count is. "Your total" on the x-axis vs "dealer's Upcard" on the y-axis and every entry must be memorized for everything that can happen in a game of blackjack. I don't know why he neglected to tell you this incredibly important part of this. You will break even, even if you vary your bets, if you don't memorize these tables and apply them accurately, with one caveat. If you bet wildly meaning bet a lot when the count is in your favor, you can win some with his strategy of not using the tables. (Please respond WIRED.) There is a whole chapter devoted to counting cards in Reno and Las Vegas in my book "Striking It Rich: Golf in the Kingdom with Generals, Patients, and Pros". I ended up going to medical school and became a surgeon . I used the $250,000 I made counting cards to pay back my MIT loans and to pay for medical school. In case you're wondering, yes, Ben Mezrich stole my story for the movie "21".

    it is simple, but most casino's use a csm (constantly shuffeling machine). This means counting cards doesnt effect the house advantage that much, unfortunally.

      Constant shuffling machines don't change the count. Once a card is removed its removed. Thus if the deck is shuffled when the count is +15, the advantage is still there to the player because there are a large number of 10s, faces, and aces still in that shuffled deck. Shuffle the deck all you want, it doesn't change the probability and the count.

      EJR77 The way a continuous shuffle machine works is that the cards are put back into the machine after every round and then the cards are reshuffled. So, no, you cannot count cards.

    Perfect basic strategy changes with the count. Low count = less chance of busting.
