  • I-D BASE and Sean Chuma present the fourth video in a series of Base Jump tutorial videos to help jumpers execute skills properly. It's always best to get live training from an experienced mentor/ instructor, however, these videos can help you improve your skills and safety. In this video I teach you some important points to take into consideration when learning the gainer. To learn how to get training from Sean Chuma visit seanchuma.com
    * THIS AND ALL BASE JUMP TUTORIAL VIDEOS ARE FOR PEOPLE THAT ALREADY KNOW HOW TO BASE JUMP. THESE VIDEOS SHOULD NOT BE USED UNLESS YOU ARE AN EXPERIENCED JUMPER. TO LEARN TO BASE JUMP YOU SHOULD HAVE OVER 200 SKYDIVES FIRST. AFTER YOU HAVE DONE 200 SKYDIVES THEN YOU MIGHT BE READY TO TAKE ON THE HIGH RISK SPORT OF BASE JUMPING. IF YOU ARE NOT A BASE JUMPER DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT TRYING BASE WITHOUT THE PROPER TRAINING OTHERWISE YOU COULD SEVERELY INJURE OR KILL YOURSELF. These are my notes for this particular video, it just serves the purpose of helping me gain perspective, feel free to comment and add anything that you think needed by commenting on it.
    0:00 - Introduction
0:53 - Pre requisites & recommendations: Trampoline is great for practice, do at least 50 jumps before attempting. Aim for nailing your tricks, landing where you want to and being CONSISTENT and IN CONTROL.
1:39 - RISKS: If pitched too early it may result in a bridle wrap between and/or around your legs. If so, the pilot chute will tow and stop your rotation and reverse it. clearing that bridle may take a lot of altitude. TIMING IS CRUCIAL, SPECIALLY ON YOUR PITCH. Too late can also have you over rotate.
2:36 - Start on a tall bridge first, giving you the biggest margin for error.
3:28 - Jumping off the rail when in the Perrine bridge will give you a better platform to stand on, get comfortable with it before attempting aerials.
3:33 - BE CALM, feel the flow. It is a big deal when you do this, so you want to be ready.
3:55 - Visualize a crash pad 10/15 feet down, aim for a two second delay from jump until you pitch.
4:10 - Find the balance between object separation and rotation.
4:32 - PERRINE BRIDGE: Within 3 seconds off the bridge you have to get something out. If caught on your back and stalling pitch and roll away from your pilot chute.
5:10 - WATCH YOUR TOES, push 45 degrees away and forward, and wait for your feet to travel until they are 45 degrees away past the fall line.
5:38 - WIND CONDITIONS: Tailwind will help prevent bridle wraps if pitched too early, no wind would be optimal as well.
6:20 - BODY POSITION: Practice it until you cannot get it wrong, it needs to be perfect.
6:34 - BEWARE OF SNAG HAZARDS: Ditch the Camera, major snag point. There is record of fatalities due to this. Knee pads.
7:20 - BASE jumping is great as it is, you don’t NEED to do this, so make sure you are ready before you do, it should be something that you enjoy and can perform well. If needed, get an instructor to guide you though.

    Maybe this could help someone:
one thing I realized about pitch timing, as I’m rotating around, as soon as I can feel wind on my shins, that indicates to me that my legs are past vertical and I’m ready to pitch.

He's rigged slider up with an "X slider". If you look closely at his jump at 4:53 you'll see it on his lines.

Hey sean, what do you think for someone who has 70ish skydive jumps can do to practice gainers? hot air balloon? heli? i’m doing gymnastics but i’m gonna take my time perfecting it before jumping off bridges. thanks

Yeah, a hot air balloon at a good altitude, like 5000 feet would be good for you. He would do the Gainer then stabilizing and pitch. It might make you have a minimum amount of jumps to jump a balloon though. With balloons You are usually always Landing off in some zone that you haven’t been able to check out very well. Use your Skydive rig tho.

Hey SC - #maskedwarrior. How are you ? You have been very quiet recently or is that me who has been quiet. Shattered my shoulder - might have all the injuries now - 2 cruciate knee, dislocated shoulder, elbow, knee - might have all of them now.
Will be over soon - at least 2 weeks. Night outs on me.
And these injuries are not BASE jumping related just day to day living sports - what does that say
