BASEJUMPERS: AVOID THIS PINLOCK

  • Following a recent fatal basejumping accident I have made that video as a visual aid to help people understand the dangers and configuration of that pinlock. Please forgive the low quality of the video, I improvised it quickly for the sake of spreading the information to as many jumpers as possible.
This was the original message I posted for context:
"This is not the first time this mistake killed a jumper, and it’s my absolute nightmare: see BFL 288 bfl.baseaddict.com/record/BFL288
Before anyone judges… it is REALLY easy to make this packing mistake and it is REALLY easy to not see it if your gear check consists in only opening the flap and looking at your pins. I prove it a few times a year by doing it in front of experienced jumpers on purpose and asking them to spot the mistake and almost nobody does. Nobody even sees it while I’m doing it in front of their eyes.
It could happen to absolutely anyone, so this is the rules I have created for myself and the people I teach:
    - don’t close your container with the PC in the BOC
    - if bottom pin comes out, remove the pilot chute from the BOC before closing your container again. Might sound unnecessary but at least it makes it idiotproof.
    - if your friend’s bottom pin comes out, pull his pilot chute out of the BOC. I have done it in many occasion while explaining why, and nobody ever got offended. People actually were glad to hear the explanation. Do not hesitate to do it! You could save a life.
    - When doing your pre-jump gear check: pull the bridle out between bottom pin and BOC and check visually and with your fingers the continuity. If you don’t do that, come to me IRL and I’ll take the time to pack a pin lock that you can’t visually see to demonstrate how important it is to take those extra 5 seconds on gear check.
I hope that routine can help someone or improve someone’s gearcheck.
My condolences to the friends and family of ****! Truly sorry for your loss!"

I definitely didn't notice that it was packed with pinlock all the time - it's really hard, if not impossible, to spot it - it needs to lift up the flap and part of container to see it correctly, or to pull out the bridle. Very good video, I hope it will help preventing further fatalities. Thanks for this, David!

This error is why I've tried to buy non-black bridles, but my container manufacturers don't offer anything but black. The lack of contrast is why people don't notice this mistake.

I have seen an image of the gear that lead to the last fatality. The bridle was really visible flashy pink on dark green and white container: colored bridles aren’t enough to spot the mistake. Please don’t rely on that!!!

Well explained and much less likely to happen if you follow the simple rule "First thing out is Last thing packed" that Kiwi Ed taught me years ago.

Might actually not be a problem on a squirrel container using a squirrel bridle. The bottom pin will just come off the bridle and you'll at least pop the top pin and have a chance of extraction.
Jokes aside, thanks for taking the time and putting this out there. May it never happen again 🫶

Wow, that's very interesting and rather scary that such an easy to make mistake could have such disastrous consequences. There must be some way of altering the design to minimise this risk.

you’re not wrong, but the thing with systems that have to be ultra reliable to be used safely there are massive considerations required to make even the slightest changes. What if the flap or whatever you just added creates the risk of some other malfunction you could never have seen from your pov, what if the forces on the bridle now concentrate on a smaller area causing it to wear out prematurely? With BASE where there isn’t even the option of having a rig TSO certified so you at least have some idea of what objective testing has been done, people also tend to be very skeptical of innovations and for a good reason.
Even the really good, recommendable and safe systems that have been developed in the last decades in skydiving aren’t without risk. Idk if you are in the sport but there is something called an AAD for regular skydiving, which is a computer with a built in altimeter and accelerometer and it can fire a small cutting charge that releases your reserve parachute if your still are at terminal velocity at a set height limit.
It’s a great invention and made skydiving a much safer sport to learn but i personally witnessed a situation where a way too inexperienced dude got himself a way too advanced wingsuit, tangled in it, wasn’t able to easily reach for his reserve ripcord so he decided to just pray to Jesus, go as fast as possible and hoped that his AAD would fire and save him. It did but what in the fuck are you looking for in this sport with this level of problem solving incompetency??
