On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

I have a friend who is a retired Viper driver and was in the Aggressor squadron. Several years ago I asked him about the Strike Eagle. He laughed and said, "yeah, we used to stay out of burner to be nice!"

The Strike Eagle (among those in the know) is notorious for poor acceleration and bleeds off energy very quickly in the high g environment. No match for the viper in a dogfight.

@@keithhoss4990 max on a clean E model is 9, same as the other F-15 models. Now once you start slapping ordnance on it’s a different story, but the HUD reads out the calculated G max based on loadout and in this video you can see it is reading out 9 since the only thing loaded are a couple AIM-9s.

I thought at first that since it’s an F-15 variant that it could dogfight. Needless to say I learned it’s not a bfm dogfighter the hard way after I merged with a MiG-21.
I couldn’t even fight a MiG-15. It’s so disappointing.

Very interesting, I didn't expect it to be such a big difference from the C. I guess the conformal tanks and all that extra weight are a much bigger hit to the BFM characteristics than I imagined.
I think it’s more of the cfts weight and drag than the planes weight itself as the engines are a lot better than the f15cs
The cft’s also put g limits on the aircraft that are crippling.
@@beetlusjuicus4013 The F-15E itself is also heavier, its structure and wings had to be strengthened to carry heavy bomb loads.
CFTs matter with drag, though, thats true. You see those pylons sticking out of the CFTs at awkward angles? They are apparently incredibly draggy.
If we were allowed to remove the CFT it wouldn’t be a problem. Those things basically make the Strike Eagle what it’s usually called. A Mud Hen. In a WVR fight, it’s just a fat chicken.
I've always heard that a mud hen without CFTs is like a C but with more power, but the are rarely flown that way, it should be interesting when the EXs become more prevalent as they will be flying without CFTs mostly.
I'm noticing a lot of people in the comments aren't making the distinction between the f-15e variant and the f-15c variant. The e variant is a completely redesigned aircraft for ground attack, it may look like an normal f-15 but it performs entirely different.
What about the F-15EX?
@@KyoushaPumpItUp from what I have heard it is inbetween the two in terms of maneuverability, as a missile truck however it works phenomenal as it has better radar and electronics.

Now I am the world's biggest Eagle fanboy, but the Mud Hen shares only its basic silhouette with the F-15D.
There is over 1,200kg worth of reinforcing of the airframe to strengthen it, necessitating the more powerful GE F-110 engines over the P&W F100s in the F-15A - F-15D and its export derivatives. There is also the somewhat reduced by far from negligible affect that the CFTs (Conformal Fuel Tanks) impose on the airframe of the Mud Hen when compared to a pair of traditional drop tank.
Now the F-15EX shares little with the lineage of both the Eagle and Mud Hen, aside from its silhouette. The EX has a fully digital control system, so the older hydraulically actuated control surfaces are out with electric motors now taking inputs from the pilot via the new fully digital flight computer and moving the control surfaces. The EX is also supposed to be lighter, given that its airframe incorporates a greater percentage of composites over alloys than the -C and -E Eagles. The EX is also designed with open architecture systems, which makes incorporating new weapons and upgrades a much simpler endeavour over aircraft like the F-22 which were designed and built before the advent of open architectures.
I'm one of the ones who thought this thing was going to dominate as a dog fighter. Then I took it out for my first flight and quickly realized I better learn the ground attack role if I want to get some use out of the aircraft.
As compared to the Air Superiority Version, the Strike Eagle has many pounds for air to ground, which is what does this to it - it can BVR, clearly, but it's not an ACM king.
Hey you can do BVR, it has a powerful A2A radar and can carry soooo many missiles. It should be able to outlast most other fighters in BVR combat.
I can’t imagine it being that far off from the c, it flies in DCS like it has a large bomb load even though it’s clean.
@@georgecharleston8532CFT.. talk to F-15E drivers and they confirm that the CFT still produces a lot of drag. Thats why the F-15Cs are flying with dropable bags (and why the F-15EX will mostvprobably fly without CFT in A2A missions.

The issue with the F-15E is the CFT on the jet. Once the F-15C were removed from England a few of the Strike Eagles were reconformed without the CFT which give the Eagle much better performance. They did this because they needed Eagles that could do Combat Patrols in Poland late last year and this.
I didn't fly E models just the Abinos, aka C's and in reality when you removed the tanks you have an hoped up C model with better intergraded systems because most are newer version of the F-15C.
It's one of the questions I need to ask RASBEZ in a forum if the tanks can be removed because I love to see how they perform w/o them.

Thats a shame. No-CFT F15Es with 229s have dominated BFM tourneys against albinos, lawn darts, bugs and cats. Such is the enduring problem of the dark grey. MX doesnt want to drop the CFTs, RAZBAM doesnt want to drop the CFTs.... BVR and ACM for all my friends!
@@xela79 I thought so... That's the point w/ USAFE removing the CFT's. It changes the flight characteristics completely... The F-15EX is a completely different animal under the skin, slightly larger w/ full fly by wires and total upgrades. Like flying a 738 and being handed the keys to a Max8...
My guess is this is how the J20 would perform in dogfighting. It’s also a missile truck, large, heavy, and low power to weight ratios (the engines aren’t very good).
Its important to note that not being a good dogfighter is not the same as not being good at air to air combat. An F15E with eight AMRAAMs/AIM9X is a very good air to air fighter because of its powerful sensors, speed, thrust, long range and combat persistence.
correct, dogfighting is only a portion of "air to air capabilities" BVR is the major component.
Strike Eagle really deserves to be called thunderbolt II, unlike the A-10 whitch is just a random slow strike aircraft...
Some USAF F-15E's have been conducting air-to-air exercises since January 2023 with their CFTs removed. While F-15E's with the F100-PW-220 engines and no CFT's performed similarly as the F-15C's, F-15E's with the F100-PW-229 engines (adding 11,000 Ibs. or 24% more total thrust) and no CFT's could prove a formidable adversary. There is no shortage of players who would be willing to pay for the F-15E flight model with no CFT's.
Just fly the F18 or F16 if you want to dogfight ...

One thing the fight between the F15 and the Su57 made clear, if the F15 wants to dominate in the intercept role, it's got to be able to dominate BVR. And to do that, the AIM120 is not going to do the job.
We really need the AIM260s for the load out.

Then youll be totally disappointed. The F-15E was literally the last aircraft in the entire US military to get the AIM-9X. Any air to air upgrades will come to the F-15E last.
F15E v Tornado F3 close in would be interesting. As would Tornado F3 v F15C BVR with awacs support etc. The F15 on paper wins...but in actual exercises the F3 did surprisingly well.
Well this is an eye opener to me. Based mainly on the train hype I was expecting it to be not dominant for sure but at least manageable in dogfights.

Can you remove the CFT’s from the Strike Eagle? That should make a huge difference if they modeled it. The USAF has been removing them from some SE’s and using them in place of high mileage C models.

This video really helped put into prospective how agile the 16 is. I know so many die hard F-15s that would bring up the KD of the 15 to say it would beat the 16. I’d love to see a match including BVR and possibly a merge if the 16 can survive long enough

Actually, all the EX versions they're getting, they opted not to have CFTs. There were some Es they removed the CFTs to compare performance, but there are still a ton of Es that are solely bomb trucks and need the CFTs.

C model has one of the best air to air radar’s in the world and turns much better than the E. It is an an Air Superiority fighter whereas the E is a multi role fighter/bomber. Air to Air the C model will win regardless of the envelope.
@@keithhoss4990 i understand it but keep in mind that it's the FC3 variant, not as detailed and similar to reality as the E variant is, so it might turn in the high fidelity bird's favour instead of the low fidelity one. that's the only reason i'm interested. but yes generally speaking there is a reason why the C variant is called EAGLE and the E one is called STRIKE EAGLE
@@stefanoferreri In Air Force Pilot training my class leader was a Strike Eagle WSO before coming to Pilot training and this is exactly how he said Dogfighting would go in a Strike Eagle.
@@keithhoss4990 i'm not saying that the E variant is the best dogfighter ever, i'm just saying that due to the low fidelity model of the C variant maybe the E variant could potentially kill it. the FC3 models in DCS are low fidelity and do not correspond perfectly with real life aircrafts whereas the high fidelity ones are pretty similar in terms of performance. Being aware of this i just said that i'm curious about seeing these two engineering masterpieces going in a direct fight, being dogfight and/or BVR. I'm not talking about real life, i'm talking about a simulator.
If you take the CFTs off of an E, it would outperform the C in every way. The E has a much better and more modern sensor suite.

I bet when a lot of people were thinking dog fight, they were thinking BVR not guns. Which you could easily argue is not a dog fight. I’d think the F15EX is going to be a huge BVR threat though since it’s got such a powerful radar and can carry so many missiles. A fighter has to make it to the merge, and what is it 16 missiles he can take? All he has to do is keep shooting at you and pushing and if he runs out, just go home and re-arm.
F-16 sans AB is still basically an A4 Skyhawk on steroids.

I would love to see another video with the F-15E against the F-16, but at high altitude. The F-15 performs so much better up there, while the Viper struggles in thin air. So if you really wanna dogfight in the F-15E, do it at high altitude.

Where this idea came from? Easy answer: The F-15 was invented as an air to air platform, which includes the ability to dogfight. And since the Strike Eagle is a derivative of the Eagle, it should also be able to dogfight.

F15 is 25% longer, double the engines, twice the dry / base weight and twice the loaded weight.
For a turning fight less mass + size wins.
I wasn't worried about dogfighting the Strike Eagle, I was worried about BVR with it's radar coupled with a DL.

I envision a scenario where f35/ngad, have peregrine, and th ex and f18 are carrying aim 260’s, them 260s will be coming from 150 miles away via stealth datalink, while the Mach 5+ peregrine will be launched via stealth within an enemies M.A.R

The F-15E was meant to replace the F-111 supersonic penetration bomber, the main reason (to my knowlage) is that a modified F-15 is still kinda and F-15 so it can defend itself (at longer range)

I guess that's why they slapped a powerful radar so that it can BVR better than anyone else. If you are not good in something, it's important to excel in something else, to cover up your weaknesses.

Wondering if the difference here is not only the 'bomb truck' design and cft's but also the Eagle doesn't have LEF's or LEX's... so attempting to do all that high alpha stuff is going to not work. You're asking an F150 to turn a corner at 120 like a Ferrari. With the extra weight it doesn't have the brute force of the C to get around that.
I'm wondering if the F16I has the same issues given it's basically a "Strike Viper". (although, yes, like the og Viper it has LEF's)

No, too much weight and drag. Su-27 or MiG-29 should have the best climb rates due to their small weights and fantastic aerodynamics and strong engines

@@abd733.k somewhat comparable to the viper in what?? BFM?? Hell no. BVR?? Maybe, but the eagle has no datalink and the radar is quite clunky. Also no jammer.
It's like a fight between a sniper rifle and an assault rifle. Both serving different purposes but can ultimately beat each other in their homefield.
It would be interesting to see how the F-15E would perform in it's primary role, being an Air Interdiction Fighter/Bomb Truck. A scenario in which it would have to go deep into enemy territory and take out some key installations and at the same time try to pave it's own way through enemy SAMs and ADFs.
All based on your immagination and skills.

@@freddarau Not fully loaded with 16 AMRAAMs in a dogfight. The C model would be better suited in that environment. However if the EX had already shot off most of its AMRAAMs then yesterday it would be better. Overall I agree the EX.

I thought the power-to-weight ratio let the F15 accelerate past Mach in a straight vertical climb... not useful against missiles but it doesn't get them out of guns? and how does it wind up so slow and low when its got that massive overthrust? (not saying its a dogfighter but thinking maybe it has different strengths that weren't being played to here?)

I just want to say my RIO/WSO and I took on a Flanker yesterday to see how the Strike Eagle can merge. It did not go well and I thought I was just being a bad pilot. I feel vindicated after watching GS struggle
