Hey Rich, thanks for the comparison. Could you clarify the Tesla costs for us a little? Of that $12k over 10 yrs, was any of that cost due to - let's say - "extra curricular activities" rather than your normal everyday use?
Also, of those issues you experienced like the drive unit, do you think some of them would be less expensive/easier to repair now? I'm hoping that $12K is still perhaps above the norm. Also, giving us even a ballpark of the gas cost saving comparison would be really interesting. 120k miles is a lot of gas money!

Just to toss it in there, the Pontiac Vibe I purchased for $4,026, I then drove for 50,000+ miles. Averaging out the cost of fuel, I roughly got 30 miles per gallon - in a station wagon - and let's go for the high side, at $3 per gallon of fuel. That means that I spent roughly $5,000 in fuel over my ownership period. I needed no real repairs other than the standard fluid changes. I was able to drive 300-330 miles at a time without having to stop and wait 8-15 hours to get back on the road again. I'm also reasonably certain my insurance costs were far lower than the Tesla as well.
That said, I do the bulk of my own repairs and maintenance. With a Tesla, I wouldn't be allowed to do that (without doing the salvage route Rich took, and took very well). COO (Cost of Ownership) then goes up significantly. Owning a BMW, it goes up even HIGHER. Owning a bicycle - it would go lower :)

That's the way it is with expensive cars in general. The reason you can buy many second hand ones cheaply is because they are horrendously expensive to fix.

When Rich said "even though it's high mileage" I nearly coughed up my drink. It's a sedan, 110k miles is a joke for a sedan or at least it should be. The Volvo 240 I drive as a parts runner/work wagon has 430k miles on it and is running strong with just basic upkeep and replacing this or that when it hits the life of rubber (bushings/engine mounts mostly). I got it at 370k miles for 850 bucks zero rust, great interior, not noises, and basically zero dents outside of tiny dings here and there and have just driven and maintained it since.
Is my 240 as fast as the Tesla? Hell no, but it there's zero point in it being fast. That's like when Musk banked on 0-60 being an important/flagship feature for a damn semi-truck. That means jack shit if it has half the capacity at best. I bought the 240, an 850R Wagon, built a RWD conversion ST204 Celica with a turbocharged V6 1GR, AND built a turbocharged all-trac/awd ST204 Celica for less than you would pay into a used Tesla that needs or will need a new battery sooner than later. I did all the work including machining, fabrication, etc in house so I saved a bundle, but I would still rather have an 850R Wagon than basically any EV.
To be fair I keep my cars longer than your average cell phone so I would get hit with the imminent battery failure expenses. This Tesla example is definitely one of the longer ones owned. Anyone with a few braincells know that when "German made" is attached to a car you're going to have something overengineered to the point of being a piece of junk with the slightest chance of a problem. I love my E31, but it also has a Toyota 1UZ V8 and not the Bimmer engine (I got as a roller, otherwise I would have kept factory).

He had some stabilisation bars replaced after 20.000km , but after that there has been no issues he says. Of course this is no guarantee that the car won't become expensive in repairs over 10 years, but at least he didn't replace the drive unit every 15.000 miles 🤷‍♂️ He also said that the battery is still in good condition (90+% capacity left) even though it was fast charged every day and charged to 100% every day.
