"Expensive" isn't the problem to me, it's needing their permission to work on a car you own - the battery needs to be coded to the car, and they won't do it or release the software to do it yourself. To hell with that.
It's the dealer too, not just Bmw Munich. Some are good some are bad. Munich engineering is simply terrible

BMW = Broke, More Wallet. $3k for an AC compressor? You know it's just a regular run of the mill AC compressor too, but once they put the BMW part number sticker on the box, the price goes up 50x. Best to drive a north american shitbox - at least the parts are cheap. The tirck is to find the least shitty shitbox that doesn't have a bunch of design flaws from the beginning.

My wife's X4 had an issue where it kept burning out taillight bulbs. BMW would replace them under warranty but never fixed the issue. After the warranty expired they wanted $600 to fix the issue. Nope. Sold the car and she'll never look at a BMW again. I love that you're calling these manufacturers out, Rich. Best videos on youtube.
Experienced bmw/i8 tech: Just order a key. Sounds like he assumed they wouldn’t even order him a key when they told him they didn’t want to work on it. Or go another dealer with registration and license of registered owner and order a key blade, add a 12 volt battery and continue diagnosing. Perhaps just a 12 volt battery problem, they go crazy when those start to go. It’ll still drive fine without coding/registering new battery. Registering a battery replacement just changes the charging strategy of the 12v batt. Sounds like he just needed some more input and advise from an i8 tech experienced tech. It’s too bad the dealer turned it away. They should’ve of at least replaced the battery for him.
Also the fuel tank can refilled by manually opening the fuel flap in the trunk. There’s an extended recall on the fuel tank pressure sensor btw, that’s if it’s within timeframe/mileage
Not sure why they wouldn't cut the key for the other guy but rich had to have tried. Maybe should go to another dealer?
@@camaroman101 I’m guessing somebody recognized his car and knows about all the drama between him and Tesla. Manager probably decided it’s easier to just turn him away. Still doesn’t explain why they wouldn’t sell him a key blade
I love that you're using your megaphone to call out Tesla and BMW for their BAD repair policies. I had a very high interest in getting an i8 until I saw your experience.
Tesla isn't even the worst anymore because everyone else got worse on part availability. Right now if the wrong part fails in your current ICE car, you could be waiting months. BMW literally cannot fix their own car here, so much worse than tesla.
I really really love the IDEA of an i8, but, Rich and others have exposed them. Hard pass.

Teslas are pretty trash to be honest. Luckily there are great alternatives now.
Unlike some other car manufacturers, Porsche actually makes me appreciate them even more as time passes.

Telling the world about this BMW experience is the best thing you could've done. With your popularity, you would think BMW would immediately reach out to make it right.
I had the same issue with my i3. Car was under the certified car warranty. Dealer didn't want to put it down on warranty. So I called a special telephone number to BMWNA. And got in touch with BMW directly. BMW decided to go ahead and do the repair. They replaced every control module, every wiring harness, replaced the electric motor, the entire HVAC system. They had to fly in a engineer from Germany and had custom cables made at the factory to match the cars connectors (I had a car built in 2013 and were 2019 versions). They wrote Special firmware so that the cars new modules can co-exist with the older parts. The cars "life module" was lifted off the frame and Battery modules were removed while they did this work. In total it cost BMW roughly $26,000 to repair the car. Car was in the shop for months. But it has been PERFECT ever since. That was 4 years ago now. Only thing I've done since is changed the motor oil on the REX every 2 years and replace the brake pads for the first time ever last august.
Tow it to Detroit and park it on Michigan Ave. Some skilled tech will have that door opened within 2 minutes.

@@Syncopia depends on how you look at it. European cars in general need more attention than the American brands. Always been like that, or at least for many decades.
The American customer expects (or expected) a car that is reliable on the long journeys you can take within the US, with the mechanical components of the car being so simple (some might say primitive) they can fix a problem themselves at the side of the road with their toolbox.
While the European customer is more after a car that drives well, no matter how much expensive tech that requires within the car. And the German customer doesn't see German cars as unreliable, I guess the German customer would call the American customer unreliable.
The German customer will look after their car and will do anything that has to do with maintenance within the intervals set by the manufacturer and they also read the instructions on their car and do everything literally "by the book".
The other thing is, that you don't have to drive more than a few minutes to the next dealership in most of Europe. Driving my car to the dealership takes 9 minutes. I could drive it to another one, but that's 12 minutes away. ;)
Within a driving distance of 20 minutes I have 4 BMW dealers, 5 VW dealers, 4 Audi, 4 Skoda, 4 Seat, 3 Mercedes, 3 Porsche, 3 Volvo...at least 7 Renault dealers... I could go on.
There are probably close to 100 dealerships within a 20 minute drive and I live in a "rural" part of Germany.
@@barbarusbloodshed6347 That's a nice way of putting it- "they need more attention". I have a needy girlfriend, I don't want nor need to have a needy car. German cars are ridiculously priced and ridiculously engineered. They do not give a better ride or "driving experience" as a rule. Some drive and handle great, some do not. For some reason you used the assumption of driving experience to justify the high price. That's a huge misconception that people have when they haven't owned a wide variety of cars. There are American and Japanese cars that have much better driving characteristics for a fraction of the cost.
This is the case with most BMWs in my opinion. All of the ones I’ve owned had some built in flaw that made it either necessary to constantly repair or sensible to simply trade in for the newer model

It's one of those very unique and rare cars that BMW would probably like to forget exists.
The Federal Government just went against Harley Davidson for refusing services for modifications. Appearently Harley signed a consent decree that they would stop refusing service for modifications.
I believe federal law applies to warranty. The manufacturer cannot deny warranty service just because the car has been modified unless they can prove that the modification caused the problem. Rich's i8 isn't under warranty so it is legal for the shop to refuse service.

Yes, that was exactly what I was thinking when Rich was explaining about the locksmith that couldn't open it. LPL could do it in 30 seconds with a shoelace and a paperclip. "Anyway, that's all I have for you today".

Nice to know those BMW "techs" fix the problem by throwing parts at it until it finally works, then proceed to pass the cost onto the customer because of their incompetence. What a joke. Poor guy shouldn't have paid anywhere near that, let alone the theft compressor job.
Not all dealers are the same. I had one in NZ say to me that they would just be throwing parts at it as they couldnt find the problem and they recommended me to just take it. Some of them are honest. Probably the best place to fix a BMW is in Germany unfortunately we dont all live there.
Reminds me of Apple. Sure a cheap fix might be possible, but Apple is going to sell you the refurbished replacement part at brand new prices instead.
They don't trust their techs ("geniuses") so they throw brand new parts at the problem until it's fixed. Not too big of a deal under warranty, but if you're not, you better have a thick wallet.
Not sure I was totally clear. They're doing the expensive parts thing because they don't want their techs to think for themselves and fix it in a way that might hurt their brand image (fancy).
That was me in the video and they basically replaced all the parts and charged me. Customer service from Alec at corporate was horrible. Stole my love for bmw
That's basically every main dealer for any manufacturer. They aren't mechanics they are just fitters of new parts.
@@Evapors I worked as a technician @ a Toyota dealership when a prius came in with a code/problem none of our tech could figure out. So Toyota sent some techs from Japan commandeered a bay with a lift and some tools and had that prius in pieces within the day. No throwing part after part after module, just good old fashion detective type work every module every wire. Had it fixed and driving again in 2weeks. German engineered vehicles have alot of parts that are built to fail in certain intervals. They look cool yes and fast (most) but they are maintenance heavy. Turbos going at 65k plastic valve covers cracking and leaking at 75 also waterpumps. This is why I only by lexus and acura Toyota products I've got over 100k miles on each one and have less than 3000 in cost for years and years of worry free operation. I work on my own cars, and thought about getting something German engineered but thought about all the downtime I would have just repairing it and decided against that decision.
I had a 330e that had to have the entire cooling system replaced, similar to what Pat is talking about, but in hybrid 3 series. My car had just over 50,000 miles and was out of warranty. $11,000 fix. I wrote to BMW to explain how my dealer had a couple of other vehicles at the dealership getting the same issue fixed, what an absolutely poor design this was and a disappointment for me, this being my first BMW. They gave me something like a $900 credit on my loan for it. Never again will I own a BMW. Once the class action starts regarding this too common a problem, please let me know. I am all in.

Rich if you phone a dealership in Germany I bet they will help you over the phone. I had an ongoing issue with a Mercedes and a couple of dealerships in England wouldn’t help so while I was in Germany with it I went to a dealership there and within 18 minutes it was fixed, I hadn’t finished my coffee. When I asked why it got fixed there so efficiently I was told that if something breaks it looks bad for the company as a whole from the top manager to the cleaner.

@@lseguy M Monkeyman is correct. There's a good percentage of the German population who speak very fluent English. I lived in the K-town(Kaiserslautern) area but even when I drove out to cities like Nuremberg, Cologne, or Munich where there aren't many Americans I still found plenty of people who spoke English or were able to understand my very broken German.

With all that said about BMW service I'll keep my '06 Prius. I kept driving my Prius with an overheating and failing inverter due to a bad inverter pump. I wasn't sure what was going on at the time but I knew my 12v battery was slowly depleting. A three hour drive and 140 miles and I got back home. In the end I got it back up and running with just a $135 inverter pump and about an hour of labor. The real relief in the end was the inverter had no apparent damage done to it. Absolutely amazing! I have put another 500 miles and it's running fine. Exotic cars? Keep 'em. I'll take practicality! Thanks for taking these cars under your ownership and telling your stories. Makes me glad I live a simple life.

There's a fella named Tyler Hoover that made quite a few PSA videos out in Kansas about how horribly unreliable BMW cars are.
They've all been a nightmare to every owner I know. Sooner or later every one of them ends up with an AUDI and the constant "fixing" stops. 🤷♂

Yep. I cant say anything about bmw's from the 80's and older but 90's plus = Test beds for crappy engineering and some of poorest material choices I've seen from any automaker.

You see I Too wanted to purchase a I8, in fact I have wanted one for years, and when I saw you actually were able to complete some customization for your I8, it sealed the deal. However now that I see that BMW will not work on the car, and to hear there are so many issues with the I8, looks like I will need to punt.
Hey James, l own an i8 and drive the hell out of it, it breaks necks everywhere it goes, as we have aftermarket wheels and wrap. Our i8 Never gave us issues. We have a Toyota Tundra that we took to the dealership for abs sensor, $5000 later the dealership kept finding stuff they thought was causing the abs light and still was not fixed.
The Lockpicking lawyer could solve this I8 issue. Need that YT collab in my life.

stick a bunch of packing tape strips on the window and pull downwards really hard, you should force the electric window down then you can just unlock it, not a graceful solution but ive done it a couple of time to help mates out and it works pretty good.
Now that is Rich Rebuilds style!

@@avery4528 Frameless you can wedge something between the glass and the body as the rubber seal usually has enough give. But assuming a straight vertical pull down it would be the same as a window in frame using the method described above.
And if that don't work, I'd be at the point to say just see how much a glass replacement is going to cost. At some point you need to cut your losses and go with the next less ideal option.
That statement at 25:48 is why I sold my Mustang GT. After Replacing an entire engine under warranty. And waiting months to get it back. This guy was so damn accurate!

BMW pulled the same crap with my mom on a CPO 330E. The car had a problem with the fuel filler door not unlocking (have to use the manual release every time) and my mom mentioned it every time she brought it in for service and they'd say they couldn't replicate the issue so it didn't exist. She had it in recently for its first out of warranty service, which I would have done myself but didn't know that she needed it so didn't have the parts, and she asked them about the issue again. This time, they said a valve in the fuel lines was bad and they'd have to drop the tank to replace it, some huge sum of money. She was like, I told you about this problem multiple times when it was under warranty, what changed now? They wouldn't even do a good faith discount, just told her to pay up or pound sand.
Why you never own a BMW out of warranty.
We have right to repair still being fought for and then have companies refusing to work on "their" vehicles. Seems no one can fix shit anymore. That's really sad.

@Big Tree usually only area specific ... This sounds like a dealer issue... Latent defect laws do cover this so you need to get a lawyer for your area who knows the laws there. This defect would be sorted under South African law and that should be useful for anyone who has a BMW

This is a great story for Louis Rossmann to cover on his channel. He has worked non stop for years to get the right to repair bills passed. If the dealer has the ability to code the battery it seems doing so would be a "no brainer" That car was always super interesting to me.
Not sure if everyone caught it, but Rich has even gone on a Rossman-special electric bike tour of NY, so mad respect for Rich's bravery. Would like to see more collaboration on this subject for sure, Scotty Kilmer, etc.

I sold my E92 M3 because the dealer wouldn’t even talk to me about replacing rod bearings at 100K miles. Super bad customer service. I was going to pay for it and it wasn’t a warranty issue. I’m done with BMW forever.

weird how everyone goes to 1 or 2 dealers when there's what. couple hundred in thr US and shops ect ect.
Even if they would agree I still think it isn't the best route to go. Dealerships don't have much experience doing rod bearings and depending on your area there are shops that have done hundreds of e92 m3 rod bearing replacements. I'm sure if the dealer even quoted you it'll be at least twice as much for possibly inferior service.
They didn't want to tie up a bay and a tech for the amount of time it would take to fix it. They figured that they could rip off...I mean fix many other people's cars and make more money in that time than work on yours.
We have good independent BMW/Audi garages in the UK, so no one goes to "stealers" once the warranty is up, unless you simply don't care about your money.

Your guy had at the end of the video did what i did, but it wasnt with a I8, it was with a 760IL that car love money and when i got it back for the shop the last time I got rid of that junk...I did get another Bimmer in 2020 but wrecked it so low and behold i am over bimmers now...and stick with my vettes.
Man, dude at the end... I think i would have lost it on those people. Props to him for keeping his cool i guess. To me... If you charge me for repairs i would expect the repair complete lol. Don't f'ing come at me with multiple other things AFTER your diagnosis that i agreed to under the pretense i would receive a working vehicle for an established amount of money. "Sure, try those other things, I appreciate your generosity".

That was me in the video. I bit my tongue the whole way even after being disrespected by bmw corporate rep. I’m a kind person and didn’t want to turn into the old me. It was tough but the worse part outside of the money was them stealing my live for BMW. I’m a tesla guy on my channel now and my c8.
I can only love these cars from afar. I know people save up to buy these cars used. But these cars cannot be owned unless they are under warranty or leased. I felt that man's heartache with that i8 story.

That was me at the end and not to sound sappy but I’ve loved bmw since 1989. They stole that from me. It’s not even about the i8 anymore….. I do more tesla content now on my channel

dude, you are hilarious!! i am now a subscriber. i went from a 2015 BMW F36GC to a 2022 Lexus RX350L. I lost the love for BMW after the N20 engine malfunctioned and lost compression after driving it for 6yrs only, brought it brand new from the BMW dealership.

I work at a BMW dealer and there are some people in there that do some shady stuff. Especially the higher management. They would goodwill engines that were already covered under insurance and the extra engine would ‘mysteriously disappear’. Fortunately BMW caught onto this and he’s been blacklisted from the company but he stole over $8 million before they got him
I used to work for a rental car company down the road from a BMW repair shop. After hearing the customers' stories about why it was taking months to repair cars and that almost all of them were paying thousands for their repairs, I decided to never buy one. Even if they covered the rental car, they'd usually put them in a compact too. Sad service

Sadly, we live in a litigious society and as the car is out of warranty, the dealership has the right to establish policies on what cars they will service. Anyone in the industry knows heavily modified vehicles (petrol or electric) are a nightmare to service because many owners:
1) Will complain about the high labor costs
2) Complain about the high parts costs
3) Will become angry at the service provider because they need a baseline of stability to begin diagnosing problems ($$$$)
4) The owner will not have detailed records of the changes performed and by whom
5) An owner will likely sue claiming the dealership damaged their car while in service
More and more manufacturers are baking into their designs parts requiring software codes if removed / replaced to have a digital trail on what has been done to the product.
i had a similar experience with the shop fixing my BMW. a classic 'toxic asset,' the thing would break a week after being out of the shop. again and again. (i think the shop was at fault). after a year or so of this, i had spent more money on the repairs than the purchase price of the car. the last thing to blow was the engine; then i just donated it. i got $0 after all that money dumped.

bringing a car in under warranty, then they wait until it’s out of warranty so they can charge the customer…it that legal? I don’t think so!
I got that with the Toyota dealer in Mckinney tx. They serviced the car almost 4 years then exactly on the date the power train warrnty expired they hit me with I need to replace my head gaskets.. I was like this car has been coming here every 5 months and y coincidence this new 4k jobs becomes needed as soon as warranty expired

Seriously. I've never owned a fully modern car, and every I think about getting something new I end up not doing it because of all this crap. I'm a big tech nerd but when it comes to cars all that tech and complication is a nightmare waiting to happen. I'll be shocked if any of these new high tech cars are still on the road in 15+ years.

Hi Rich, can you get to any positive wiring connection which is not switched on the way. For example the Starter or Generator Cable?
You can inject Voltage backwards into the 12v circuit and negative connection is every where on the chassis anyways.
Be aware to use only the minimal necessary amps this way - depends of course on your injection point, only to get the door unlocked.
If no connection is reachable but the cable is there just scrape away the isolation and replace afterwards.
Rich, did you try to just provide 12v to any accessible connector, which have the terminal 30 on it? That way you could have a temporary 12v power to the vehicle.

@@JackBWatkins My first and last BMW was a 1977 E21 320i. Always loved the style of the E12 sedan and wanted to upgrade to 528i.
Some bmw models have abs pumps under the car easy as pie to get to and a harness connector which have a direct path to the 12v battery, which is always powered to keep the pump active while the car is powered off for communication after a drive cycle.

Dude with the i8. File a small claims lawsuit against BMW for that $3k you paid for the compressor. If you documented the compressor issue before the warranty ran out? They are accountable for full repair under warranty. Been there done that
Maybe contact the state bureau of consumer affairs. The fact that the pandemic happened shouldn't have anything to do with honoring a warranty claim.
Sounds like those BMW mechanics were simply throwing parts at the car in hopes something would work.

@@Evapors my man. TRUST ME. Small claims process is EASY. You rep yourself. But chances are, it won’t even get that far. You basically get your receipts and type your story/history of the compressor situation into a “demand” letter to bmw. Certified letter. Request the full amount you paid. If they refuse, you file the case (simple form) in your local small claims and they will serve BMWs agent for your state. At that point (after they are served), HIGH possibility bmw lawyer will contact you directly asking “how can we make this go away”. You state you want full amount, and they will say ok but with a non disclosure you will have to sign. Case closed.
This is honestly a really good video. The BMW i8 is my dream car but I like to see stuff like this that shows what problems you may have with it. I'm pretty sure Porsche has serious issues with getting parts and repairs done too though. it's branding. make it feel like you're part of a cool kids club so you can feel good about how much you spent lol. pretty sure if the taycan was out of warranty the dealership would tell him to get stuffed just the same lol.
@@infernaldaedra actually the Porsche dealership I go to is amazing. I had an issue with my back lights, no problem under extended warranty, told them my cup holders were sticky but not to bother replacing them - they replaced them for free. They have events, let you know about track days and other programs. I’m pretty anti-dealership, but they’re amazing. Granted, that’s one out of how many - but I’ve heard good things about others

I think possibly removing the windshield to access the interior might be the easiest and cheapest method but this is exactly why I don't do computerized future cars, my work truck is a 2014 but my cars are all carburated and simple as possible, this makes maintenance and working on them in general so easy it's actually fun to work on them...
I was seriously looking at an i8 but the thought of depending on BMW main dealers for servicing or any repairs put me completely off. Bought an Aston Martin Vantage instead. Happy as I can be!!!
The inability of BMW dealerships to figure out these issues is not limited to the i8, it's all their models.

My idea of the dealerships in general is they work under the disguise of a caring partner to the manufacturer. In reality they call the shots after warranty runs out , they work in it or they don’t . They are tide to that fleet of warranted product , they make their dollars on new product and keeping that product running til warranty ends , you go to independent shops after that , that’s why the cost is outrageous after warranty items expire .

I'm a fleet mechanic. Every time I hear any of my friends talking about buying a BMW, a Mercedes, or any other fancy brand I tell them to start putting money aside. Those vehicle are not meant to be bought. You lease them once the lease is up give them back. If you can't afford those high end cars new is because you are not supposed to have them. If you must have them, again put money aside because it will cost you.
Old BMWs are so great to drive. Got a e46 330ci. So much fun. I understand the love people got for them.
as someone that owned bmws for over a decade, old high miles ones, you arent wrong...however i fixed them all myself and did preventative repairs...thus they never left me stranded. they are actually good cars, if you know how to fix them and what to fix before they actually break.

@@Dilbagh0210 every bmw of this era will require the entire intake/vaccum/ccv system to be resealed. dont replace the offending area just yank the intake, fuel raol, CCV system etc and just replace every oring and gasket. replace all oil seals on top and and the oil filter housing.
cooling system, replace all hoses, lines, radiator pump thermostat and expansion tank if its of unknown age, or over 8--10 years old. other than that, use good proper oil, 3500 mile oil changes, and only stuff left will be some front end bushings.

Yet more reasons why the last BMW I bought is my last E39. Perfect blend before full on digital. This is a great example of why new cars are junk for a person who keeps his cars and works on his own cars as I do.
Facts. I don't want anything past 2008. I have an 06 FX35 and an 08 LS460. Can't really do any better than those as far as I'm concerned. Reliable and relatively easy to maintain.
Almost any car from the 90s on is "full on digital". Often even if they have a carburetor, usually then you could at least call them a bit analog. With German cars you are talking from the 80s onwards lol.
The E39 is almost entirely digital. It may have less electronics than today, but there are are five different electronic busses across that car: CAN, I-Bus, K-Bus, P-Bus and M-Bus! As an E46 guy, I think the reason they were more reliable than todays electronic powerhouses is because there was less complexity to the feature set.
