remember this is an adult male walking around with a local. His 10$ is not accurate for what a normal tourist would pay at least 10x more no matter how advanced of a traveler you are. Since he was walking around with a local he will be somewhat safer, he didn't what a "western" female with him which makes it even safer. Videos like this skew it a lot more than what you read on google. Google normally blows everything out of proportion, but this area known as a big crime/terrorist area especially towards the borders.
Algeria, Morroco, Tunisia in the northern/tourist areas are generally very safe and only have petty crime that you see everywhere. These are much safer and better alternatives in northern Africa.
Further down on the coast, Senegal in the main areas is also decently safe. Not for single women and stay as close to the main areas as possible. Just off the coast cape verde, is extremely safe and is one of the best winter places to travel from Europe. Europe is quite cold in the winter so canary islands/cape verde are the only warm places in the winter months,.
Since I travel a lot. i feel like I would be fine Mauritania. I'm an adult male. I would leave my drone and bigger cameras at home and I would be on higher alert if my girlfriend were to travel with me though. Remember the guy in the video is a traveler, it's second nature to him to have travel tips and flexibility to get out of certain situations and what to watch for.
I know a girl who got her passport stolen in Rome when gypsy's were attacking her. I don't think that could happen to me and think it's crazy because I find Rome as insanely safe maybe because I know what to look for.
In North America, you don't have to worry about anything really so NA travelers to europe/africa/asia usually get scammed because they don't know what to look for, how to read a situation and etc. I've walked and driven through Inglewood, queens at night, and Compton at night. Didn't ever feel unsafe that is how sheltered NA is and this is why google blows things out of proportion to protect the travelers that normally live in a very safe bubble. In this case, google is not wrong there are recent slave kidnappings and terrorism in tourist areas which is different than petty crime. So it's fine but just be aware.

I love ❤ Mauritania 🇲🇷, I first visited in 1996 then lived there 2014-2015. The people are great, the only ones that seemed to have a small but noticeable attitude were the Lebanese, other than that great expereince. I did have to get adjusted to the electricity and water out for hours. Other than that great. Oh yeah, the fresh seafood.
