- SCP-049 is a humanoid entity which bears the appearance of a plague doctor. While SCP-049 appears to be wearing the thick robes and the ceramic mask indicative of that profession, the garments instead seem to have grown out of SCP-049's body over time. SCP 049 will become hostile with individuals it sees as being affected by the Pestilence, often having to be restrained should it encounter such. If left unchecked, SCP049 will generally attempt to kill any such individual.

What’s tragic about scp-049 is that he truly believes he’s serving the greater good, that he’s a savior to the infected, a savior to world from the pestilence. He’s the hero of his own story, not a villain. And because of that he can’t be dissuaded, or reasoned with, or convinced to stop; he’ll die first. All his butchering, mutilation, and killing is mercy in his eyes, it’s the cure. He’ll save the world from the pestilence, whether they want it or not.

The thing is we can not say if this is true or not so maybe he is the hero we need it may be necessary to look that way because no one is sure about this whether he is a hero or villain no one knows

The most fascinating thing about 049 to me is the fact that he’s completely intelligent and aware of what he’s doing, but he seems to be oblivious to how horrifying what he does is to everyone else, or is amused by it, yet somehow without any malice, like how a child enjoys seeing someone with their butt on fire screaming and panicking.
He’s a man of science at his core, and morals, or at least _our_ morals, and _our_ standards of “normalcy” and nature simply aren’t a part of the science he practices.

To me is sad how after killing Dr. Hamm, the felt mournful about his death and regretted killing him. Even the stone cold killer seems to regret killing a fellow doctor and friend, and seeing the built up trust between him and the SCP foundation crumble so quickly.
we learned about this in medieval history, the 4 humors was this theory about how different humors, that being blood, black bile, yellow bile and phlegm could change a persons personality and how they felt health wise and if they were sick they had an imbalance of humors.
I thought this comment was coming to an insightful point about 049... But alas

I like how in a scp article they hint that 049 is from alagata (the realm that the hanged king is from) and is really disliked by his fellow scholars there. The hint was when an agent ran into a plague doctor in the yellow lord's realm she asked if "the cure they have is most effective" the doctor paused and said "I hope you haven't met the same individual I'm thinking about" I'm paraphrasing but that was basically what was said.
For those wondering it's the scp called inevitable.

I was just reading that story recently, so here's a summary (if you can call it that) of that part:
The creature had taken the investigator into the darkness, finally when she could visualize something she saw a man dressed in robes of all colors and a beak mask.
The criature said: "I heard your racket in the street, deduced you were not a local, and thought it prudent to warn you that you walk into a plague zone."
Hearing the word "Plague" come out of the creature's beak, She replied: "Sure. I'm gonna trust you about plagues. I'll bet you've got a cure that's most effective, too?"
The creature shrieked and brought its hand to its face in outrage: "From where, might I inquire, did you collect that vile turn of phrase?"
The investigator replied carefully. "We've had… experience, with someone like you. Where I'm from."
The avian creature replied in a loud voice:" Not very like me at all. If we're speaking of the same individual, I deeply regret your misfortune. That one arose from, and occupies, a place of great dishonour. We do not speak of him."
Yes, the investigator confused him, apparently the doctor is quite infamous among the Wandsman.

@@paisleesheppard5629 i think its related to SCP-5000, and the pestilence is human hope, and some people have theorized that it's the human brain, which in lore would be an alien thing. If you know how to read, you cannot read something without reading it in your head first. And some say this is why you argue with yourself or talk to yourself in your head.
@@paisleesheppard5629 no. the one thing all those have in common: pain. the cause of all pain. the invisible parasite that feeds on all humans, and when freed from it's grasp, no longer feel pain. it's the very thing that keeps human souls attatched to their bodies after death, feeling everything for eternity even as your body is atomized and spread through the world.

@@someturkishguy8638 ha, I've been calling my brain my own little parasite since I got a depression 😂 since it knows we should be doing productive things to make us feel better in the long run, but it keeps dishing out psychological tricks to make me feel tired, headache, hungry etc in an attempt to prevent me from doing the dreaded productive thing. Plus. Entirely out of my control, my brain can just decide that a piece of information is not important enough to be stored in long term memory 😊

I believe I heard in another video that, when asked, he starts getting agitated and is never able to give an answer that humans can comprehend.
it is less so an issue of willingness from my understanding and more an issue of ability. he'd love for them to be able to help him and their understanding would help that but he doesn't know how to put it in a way that they would understand
SCP-049 has an extra sense for the pestilence. I don't think he's able to put that sense into comprehensible words for scientists.
Maybe a philosopher or someone in quantum physics with medical knowledge. A psychiatrist who minored in those fields. Someone who doesn't bat an eye at receiving hours worth of vague concepts and taking it at face value.

The pestilence is what causes humans to be able to die, 049 is the only one without it, which is why he is immortal.
I've actually had that thought myself.
It could also be greed or want because in the billionaire story the people killed are rich and greedy.

The one thing that doesn't come up is what does SCP-049 thinks of modern medicine - germ theory and the like. Does he dismiss it or has anyone even tried to explain it to him?

I think of this theory because of Kidnapped by Scp-049 the man who was kidnapped was very involved in his self and could be hateful

I'm not sure the Pestilence is actually a thing, since whenever it's brought up, 049 gets all cryptic and evasive. It might just be a rationalization to let 049 think of himself as a good guy while doing what he really wants to do: dissect and reanimate corpses.

I am curious why the scp foundation didn’t send in D-class personel as ”medical students” that the plague doctor would be supposed to teach. That way they’ve could’ve learned more about the pestillance and the cure.
He doesn't have violence in his heart, and it's not easy on his conchience.
Many scp stories reveil that he doesn't like that he kills people.
Often it's an accident, and when it's not, he thinks it a terrible, sad sacrifice to get rid of the pestilence, and he regrets it.

In the Spanish branch of the Scp foundation there’s a tale of Scp-049 was in Herman’s Fuller of the Disquieting.
Everything about this video was enjoyable, loved it a lot. Also I love the thumbnail
I don't know why but I think I've watched so many SCP-049 Videos that now I love him more than I used to. Like if someone makes fun of him, I feel like standing up for him.

Even though that incident happened, in the doctor's mind, he is doing all of that for a greater good and that in fact, for him, all he is doing is help others of a sickness that is fully real in his view of the world- And others pretty much can't convince him otherwise. He has good intentions, he seems to genuinely worry about the existence of the pestilence and is cooperative to the foundation, but he just lacks the proper behavior to express these intentions of helping that he has
i think the pestilence is the entity from scp 5000-why that is most likely the reason he stays vague about it because when people find out they practically go insane

049 will always be my favorite scp, mainly because the video that introduced me to scp's in general was (if i remember correctly) a live action interview with the plague doctor. I don't remember anything past this, but if someone knows what im video im talking about that'd be cool

My most favorite SCP ever.
So my question is, what happens if we asked him to find the genetic signature for his pestilence? Just give him the equipment he needs to do it, plenty of tissue samples, and ask him to isolate it. What would he show to try and prove the pestilence existence? Shouldn't be hard to convince him to use more modern techniques, if cleft can get him into the infinite Ikea, he can figure this one out.

I feel like someone or something once convinced the Doctor of the Pestilence and its effects. The Doctor might not actually know what it is, but he does not question it.
I wonder if the Plague Doctor can read the Voynich manuscript or if it was created by him. The part about his notes being unreadable by code breakers really reminds me of the manuscript.

Judging from what I’ve seen so far both with this and his interactions with the weeping man, I’m guessing “the pestilence” is death by natural decay and his goal is to conquer death for any and all life forms. His goal appears to be a sort of perfect necromancy which revives anyone, soul and all.
