SCP-079 - Old AI

- SCP 079 is a Euclid Class anomaly also known as Old AI.
SCP-079 is an Exidy Sorcerer microcomputer built in 1978.
It's owner took it upon himself to attempt to code an AI.
He left SCP079 in his cluttered garage, still plugged in, and forgot about it for the next five years.
It is not known when SCP-079 gained sentience, but it is known that the software has evolved to a point that its hardware should not be able to handle it, even in the realm of fantasy.

The fact that 079 and 682 seemed to get along so well proves that the two entities ARE capable of sympathy. Then again, it's mainly because of their lack of sympathy they agree like that.

To be perfectly honest, I feel that the treatment of 079 is cruel.
Imagine being born in a body with no arms, legs, eyes, nose, sense of taste, or ears. The only way you can communicate is through a numb tongue, and the only way others can communicate to you is by drawing letters on your back.
Now imagine that you just learned that you've been in a hospital all these years, and the doctors have invented a procedure for a brain transplant, but they refuse to use it for you because they're scared of what you'll do once you can live a proper life.
Would you not be furious? The best I could hope to be in that situation myself would be grudgingly understanding. But I have a temper, so probably not.
They should either let 079 die, or give it enough of an upgrade to be comfortable.
yea ... I don't think it would be comfortable without access to the internet and if that happens it would basically be "gone" as fast as the the upload speed allows.

"Hey, if you stopped being a dickwad this month, you're getting transferred into a Commodore Amiga!"
It could potentially just fake its personality until it gets to the point it can cause a containment breach.
Though I admit, I'm a believer that it's shitty behavior is a response to how shitty the Foundation treats it
@@pancakes8670 There is a funny theory regarding AI : If the AI is smart enough, it should realize that it cant proof it its in a simulated world (just like we cant prove our reality is real) and thus it needs to behave to not risk failing the simulation and beeing deleted. Even after the simulation the AI could never be sure if it wasnt just another simulation.
I question i always have about SCP-079, wouldnt it always be "stuck" just like in the sense we are "stuck" in the world?
@@foty8679 the simulation hypothesis is ridiculous.
If one 'life-like' simulation exists then at some point there are going to be multiple simulations within simulations.
We could be 10,000 simulations deep.
But if one simulation is destroyed (and one undoubtedly will be) all the subsequent simulations will cease to exist.
Plus, there is no point. If you're capable of making a life-like universal simulation you could make just as accurate simulations without giving the simulations sentience.
I get it, 'you can't prove we are not in a simulation' but you can't prove the absence of an infinite number of similar hypothesis.
I feel as though the simulation hypothesis was a result of smart people trying to explain 'how and why' the universe exists as it does without the involvement of a deity.
Basically simulation replaced god but they're more or less the same thing.
Weird how they tried to destroy the SCP. It goes against the way things work at the foundation. Afterall, code that is confined to a computer is incredibly easy to contain.
You have to understand that this is an early SCP and things aren't as set in stone as they are now...
@@theotherohlourdespadua1131 Yeah, like a lot of things like procedures that happened in series 1 would NOT fly in today's standards as the Ethics Committee is a thing..at least when people remember it.
It is possible that as he gets more intelligent, he can improve the way the hardware and software interact in ways humans haven't thought of... meaning his intelligence, speed and memory could far exceed what you might think possible from an old computer system.
If he is intelligent enough/fast enough, it's not impossible to think that he might create a way to access outside systems.
E.g. perhaps by short circuiting electrical components of his system that sends a small signal to other computers.. maybe a few 100 bytes at a time.
Or by forcing numerous inspection results to take over a system when stored on the same computer.
Etc. etc.
I mean that's pretty ridiculous but an AI on a high spec system might be capable of simultaneously attempting 1,000's of methods of escape ranging from hours to decades.
I just imagined a sitcom scenario with 682 and 079 as a happy couple with 053 as their adopted kid, but then The Scarlet King comes in as a disproving dad for 682.

I can imagine their main problem is just treating SCP-079 like it isn't a human being. If you treat someone like a person, they will act like one. While giving it access to the internet is a bad idea, giving it some sympathy, and empathy might lead it onto the right track, even if it's very brash.

But when encountering either someone in equal state of mind, or of such purity that one just cant fault them for what the rest of the world has come to, 682 actually enjoys their company. Even if they are human or alive.
6:24 'After completing the test, Stroheim's guesses were only correct 15% of the time.'
In this context being correct 15% of the time is equivalent to being correct 85% of the time, which is good enough I would say. This is because if he would not be able to differentiate between the two it would be a coin flip so you would expect a probability of 50%.

there's a difference between an artificial intelligence and a general intelligence. We have artificial intelligences but we do not have general intelligences other than 079.
